Title: Coin Summary: Agent Fox Mulder didn't know where he was. It was more likely that he didn't care. Agent Fox Mulder didn't know where he was. It was more likely that he didn't care. He just looked around from his view-point on the forest floor. He was eye level with the leaves. He tried to stand up and didn't succeed until the third try. When he got up, he saw other people around him, doing the same. They were all different ages, races, sex. A small girl in a nightgown, clutching a teddy bear, started to cry. One of the women ran over to her and comforted the girl in her arms. Mulder didn't think about the little girl and the people around him, he thought about the most important person in his life: Scully. He had to find her. He had to get out of those woods. Slowly, his memory seemed to slide back into his head. As if it was late for its cue. He remembered where he was. Belfleur, Oregon. BUT, his mind said, What happened? Where did you go with the UFO? He frantically searched his memory and found a gap. Nothing there. Nothing between now and when he was taken. He cried out in anger. "Mulder!" a male voice cried. The young Billy Miles runs toward Mulder, dodging and weaving the others. "Billy! Do you know where we are?" Mulder said looking him in the eye. "Yes!" he said smiling a bit, since he remembering. "We are right where we started. The road is about a half a mile away." "Then we should try to get everyone walking," Mulder said. It took about fifteen minutes to organize everyone to leave the forest. They were like an army from the forest. Appearing like they went out for a walk. Except for the fact that some were in pajamas, uniforms, dresses, and business suits. They appeared on the road, the whole procession. A car that was going by, stopped with a screech. The man got out, his jaw hanging. "Where did you come from?" the man said approaching Mulder, who looked to be in the lead. "That, right now, doesn't matter. What year is it?" Mulder said, urging him. "Well, it 2001. Everyone knows THAT!" he said with a chuckle. The man looked them up and down. "Hey, you people look like you came from last year!" "We did," said Billy Miles. "Mommy! Juice!" said a small girl with strawberry blonde hair. She pounded her small fist on the table of her high chair. "I'm coming Sammi, I'm coming," said Dana Scully, looking into the dining room, where her year old daughter sat. She went back to getting Sammi's juice into the tippi cup. Scully still couldn't believe that only a year ago, on September 12, her daughter was born. It seemed so.... Impossible. She was infertile. But, her first night with Mulder, she became pregnant. Her thoughts were that the Consitorium doctors missed some eggs. Samantha Xavia Mulder, was a miracle. She tried to explain how and why she became pregnant, but nothing seemed to fit. Everything seemed too wild and too out there for her to even think about. They made her think about Mulder. It still hurt to not have him near. She was still on the X-Files(the reason for Sammi's middle name) and had a new partner. A teenage girl genius named Victoria Jemmings. She was only 17, but she had graduated from Quantico only a year ago. Right before... Mulder.... Scully thought about her partner as she set down Sammi's tippi cup in front of her. Jemmings was a nice girl, who was very interested in the X-Files. She looked up to Scully and said that she tried to follow the cases they were on while in Quantico. They developed a friendship and Jennings was supposed to be calling soon, to talk over a case. Suddenly, the phone started ringing. She set down the fork she was feeding her daughter with, and walked toward the phone in the living room. "Hello," she said, leaning against the couch. "Scully, its me," A familiar voice said. Scully almost dropped the phone. She sat down on the couch. "Mulder!!" Scully arrived at Belfleur, Oregon the day after the call. Jennings arrived at Scully's house about a half an hour after the call. She told her about Mulder calling and started to cry in the middle of the story. Jennings comforted her and told Scully to pack. She would watch Sammi. It took a few minutes to get to the police office. She finally arrived in the parking lot and jumped out of the car starting to run without even realizing it. Inside the office, Billy Miles was sitting at a desk. He stood up to meet her. "Billy! My God! your alive too!" she said, taking him into a hug on an impulse. "Scully! Calm down, Mulder's right here. We're all back and home," Billy said, releasing her. He turned her around, and there stood Mulder. He had come around from the side of the building when he saw her car pull up. "MULDER!!!" Scully cried, and tears began to flow for both of them. She ran to him and the hugged. They just stood there like that for a long time. But time didn't seem to matter any longer. Time was nonexistent standing there together. "Mulder..." Scully said in a watery voice. "It's been so long." "Yes... yes it has Scully," Mulder said. "Say that again," Scully said, smiling. "Ye.." "No," she said, "The Scully part." Mulder laughed. For the next two hours, Scully told him about their daughter, how big she was, and how she had her father's eyes. And her mother's hair. All this, sitting in the same hotel room from over a year ago. "Did you get a new partner?" Mulder asked carefully. He was worried at the response. "Yes, I have Mulder. Her name is Victoria Jennings and she's a 17-year-old genius." Mulder laughed. "No! I'm serious Mulder!" It felt so good just to say his name. "Wow Scully. Lowered to babysitting," he chuckled. He then received The Look. God he missed The Look... "Mulder, she's fully capable of doing the job. And she's capable of baby-sitting OUR daughter," she said. She took Mulder into a hug. They sat like that on the bed for a few moments and released. "I'm so glad you're back Mulder," Scully said softly. A silent tear slipped down her cheek, and Mulder wiped it away. "Scully, we should go home. See Sammi and Jennings and is Skinner still around?" Scully laughed. "Mulder, he's head of the FBI now." Mulder's jaw dropped. "You've got to be kidding me. He's the Director of the FBI?!" Scully shook her head. "God, I've got some catching up to do!" Mulder and Scully left Belfleur, Oregon that next day. Probably not to set foot there again. They arrived at the airport and took Scully's car to her apartment. They grabbed their bags and walked quickly upstairs. Scully used her keys and unlocked the door. There was Jennings, bleeding all over the floor. Her head was severed from her body and was across the floor, near the window. Most of her clothes were off, and it looked as if she was raped. Scully started to cry at the sight of her young partner's body. Mulder caught sight of a piece of paper, pinned to Jennings head. He walked over to it, and it read: MULDER MAY BE BACK, SCULLY. BUT YOU MAY ONLY HAVE THE CHILD OR HIM. CHOOSE WISELY AGENT SCULLY. "Scully, come here," Mulder said. She didn't answer. He turned and saw her looking everywhere. "Where's Sammi? We have to find Sammi!!" Scully broke down. Mulder rushed to her side. He took her into her arms. "Shh... Scully... its going to be okay. We'll find her," he said rocking her back and forth. He didn't want to think about the fact that he would have to leave. "We have to call the police. They will take care of it." "No they won't Mulder! We will!" she cried hysterically. "Your on the X-Files, we can take this case! I don't care if its personal!!" She started to cry harder. Mulder decided not to show her the note. They called... more like Mulder called the police after comforting Scully. They came and observed the grisly scene. Mulder explained his part of the story, as much as he could tell them, and Scully gave her side. She managed to get through it without crying. Mulder and Scully left the scene and tried to get a hold of Skinner. They tried the phone and no one answered. So they decided to stop at his office. They got in and Mulder got a few looks. The duo quickly walked toward his new office, and his secretary wasn't there. Scully knocked on the door. "Come in," said a muffled voice. They walked in. "Mulder!" Skinner said, jumping from behind his desk. He walked to Mulder and gave him a hug. "God Mulder! Where have you been?" "That doesn't matter right now. What matters now is this: Jennings is dead, Sammi is gone and there was a note left at the scene," Mulder said quickly. "Mulder, you have to slow down. I can't understand what you're saying. Try again and sit down." Mulder and Scully sat down and Mulder explained the situation. "The note said that Scully can only have one or the other. Me or her child," he said, finishing off his statement. Scully looked over at him, looking frightened. She didn't know about the note. Why didn't he tell her? "What are we going to do?" Scully said, sitting stiffly, not wanting to cry. "Well, we're going to have to have a case opened. And I assume that you two want to take the case?" Skinner said, taking off his glasses and rubbing his eyes. "Yes," Scully said. Skinner looked up at her in surprise. "Are you sure Agent?" "Yes." Mulder and Scully arrived at Mulder's apartment, tired from the searching and questioning of Scully's neighbors. Mulder thought it was a good idea for Scully to stay with him, since her apartment was, once again, a crime scene. Scully wasn't at most of the questioning, due to the fact that she had to go to Jennings' funeral. She said a few words about what a wonderful Agent she was and how she was always there for her. She cried a little, remembering at how Jennings helps with Sammi and how well they got along. Mulder had the Chinese take-out on the kitchen table. He started to take out plates, when he heard Scully burst out crying. He ran into the living room and saw her lying on the couch, crying. He walked over to her and she stayed still. Mulder laid down behind her, and hugged her to his body. Scully held on to his arms and brought one of his hands up, under her face. Scully awoke to the bright sunlight, filtering through the blinds on Mulder's window. She looked around and noticed that Mulder was asleep behind her. She looked at how his chest rose and fell and how peaceful his face looked. It was the only time at all, did Fox Mulder not looked troubled. She finally got up and walk to the bathroom and took a shower. After she got her clothes on, she heard the door open. She cautiously looked out of the door and saw Mulder standing face to face with a man in a trenchcoat. She looked for where her gun, but realized that she left it in her coat on the hanger. Right where the intruder stood. "What do you want Krychek?" Mulder said in a venomous voice. He had his gun, so Scully felt safe enough to leave her hiding in the bathroom. Krychek whipped his head toward where Scully stood. "Scully! Hello! How's your daughter?" Krychek grinned evilly. "You took her!!" Mulder screamed. "You fuckin' son of a bitch! you took her!" "Very perceptive Mr. Mulder," he nodded. "Yes I did. And I have come for Scully's decision." He looked to Scully and stopped smiling. "What is your decision Scully? You have to chose or both die." Scully looked from Mulder to Krychek. She started to sweat. *Think Dana, think.* "How do I know that Sammi's still alive," her throat clenched at the thought. "Because she is here," Krychek said. "Marita, come here please." In walked in the blonde with the child, quiet in her arms until she saw her mother. "Mommy! Mommy!" Sammi cried over and over. Scully began to tear up at the sight of her daughter, screaming for her, and unable to do anything. Like Mulder. Mulder! "Mulder! What do I do?" Scully asked. Marita finally quieted Sammi down enough so the could talk. "Take Sammi and let them take me," he said simply. He looked pained by saying what he did. He walked over to her and kissed her lips carefully and gently. She kissed back. "Mulder, like Hell. I can't let you," Scully said, holding on to his hand. He looked at their intertwining hands. "Scully, its either me or Sammi. It might as well be me," he dropped her hand and looked into her eyes. All thoughts of the screaming child and Marita and Krychek, ran away. Mulder only thought of her, and how beautiful she was. Even if he could see the pain in her eyes, she was still beautiful. "I can't choose," Scully uttered in defeat. Krychek looked up at her from where he was looking at the child. "Well, since I like you, I'll do something nice," he said with a grin. Scully didn't like that grin. "How about we play a little game of chance?" "Chance?" Mulder said. He walked to Scully's side. "Yeah, chance. Flipping a coin, anyone?" Krychek laughed. Mulder took a coin out of his pocket solemnly. He handed it to Scully. She took it carefully out of his hand. It was a 1986 penny. She looked it over. Could she do this? "Okay Scully," Marita said. It was the first time she spoke up. "Mulder goes if it lands tails, heads for the child." She seemed to be treating this like a simple game. Win or lose, who cares? Scully dropped the coin to the floor, allowing fate to choose for her. The coin spinned and danced around the floor. It spun one, last, fateful time, before it landed. Tails. "Oh, no!! Mulder!" Scully cried. Mulder looked to her in horror. He lowered his head and walked over to Marita. He took Sammi from her arms and hugged her. "Hi Sammi," he said smiling. "Daddy!" she said grabbing his neck. She had never seen him before. He started to cry over the simple words said by the child. He hugged her again. "Here you go Dana," Mulder said, forcing a smile. He handed her Sammi. "Tell her all about me, please. Tell her Daddy loves her." Scully nodded and took Sammi from his arms. She just held her. Mulder walked over to Krychek and Marita. "No," Krychek said. he pulled out his gun and pointed at her. "Scully, set down Samantha." She set her down on the couch and put her hands up. "Come here," Marita said. Scully came forward, hands up. Marita pulled another gun from her holster. She handed it to Scully. She took it. Mulder looked at them, dumbfound. "Scully, shoot him," Krychek said. Her jaw dropped. He still had the gun pointed at her. "Do it Scully. I can shoot your baby before you can shoot me." He then pointed the gun at Sammi. She didn't understand. She continued to gurgle and play. Scully looked at Mulder. He looked at her. Then it struck her. They wanted everything to be taken from her. Mulder, Sammi, her life. Make her kill Mulder, she'll be arrested for murder. "I love you Mulder," and she pulled the trigger. the end Feedback is appreciated. Thanks! trustno1@twcny.rr.com
