Title: Winds and Wails Summary: Mulder and Scully help a neighbor give birth during a tornado. Challenge: When The Wind Blows Challenge It was a Sunday, and Mulder and Scully were out in the porch lounging, trying to call the wind by whistling. It was really humid that day and even the A/C in their room could not be cold enough for the two of them. Scully was fanning herself and Mulder still whistling when their house phone rang. Mulder got up to answer only to come back quickly two minutes later. "What's wrong?" Scully asked him, her brow furrowing with worry. "You remember the Sloans?" Mulder asked her and she nodded in response. "Yeah, Arthur and Jane," she paused. "Why? Did something happen?" "Nothing bad, but they called because Jane's in labor and they don't think they can make it to the hospital," Mulder quickly said. That prompted Scully to get up quickly and head inside the house. "Shit, okay. Mulder, call them back and tell them we'll be there in ten," she shouted as she grabbed some medical supplies she has at home from her office. While Mulder called, she grabbed everything she could that she thinks she might need in delivering a baby. Her heart was racing, and it was not because she was nervous, but because something doesn't feel right. She brushed it off when Mulder called for her with car keys in his hand and both their phones on the other. They drove to the Sloan's house as fast as they could. The house wasn't that far, but considering that a baby was on the way, Mulder had to speed it up a notch. Arthur was waiting for them by the door and relief washed over him when he saw them get out of the car. "Oh, Dana, Mulder, I'm so sorry for calling all of the sudden. Her labor has progressed so fast after her water broke," he told them. "Don't worry, it's no problem. We're happy to help," Scully assured him. "Now, where is she?" she asked as they entered the house. "Follow me." Arthur lead them to the bedroom where Jane was leaning on the bed clearly in a lot of pain. "Jane, sweetie, it's Dana," she told the laboring woman as she approached her. Jane cried in relief when she saw Scully and began to tell her how she was feeling. "Yes, I know you're in pain, most especially now that your water has already broken," Scully softly explained to her. "How about we get you in bed, huh?" Jane nodded and was assisted by Arthur to bed. While the couple were getting settled, Scully turned to Mulder and asked him if he could check any news about the weather. "What? Why?" he asked. He was confused as to why Scully would ask about the weather out of the blue. "Just please check it for me," she told him. "Something doesn't feel right, and I don't know, I think it's the weather." "Okay, I'll check it." He told her and stepped out of the room after giving her a kiss. She turned to the couple and puts her hands together, "Alright, let's see if you're ready to get this baby out." Scully checked how dilated Jane already was. "You're 8 centimeters dilated, Jane. Baby's coming soon. Just hang in there, okay?" Jane nodded and Scully went to see Mulder in the living room. He was standing in front of the TV, mouth agape at what was on the news. Scully gasped, "Holy shit." Mulder turned to her with full panic face on. "We need to move somewhere safe and fast," she told him. They rush to the master bedroom trying to look as calm as possible. "Arthur, Jane, we need you to listen carefully," Scully told the couple. "There's an incoming tornado and we need to move you somewhere safely." The couple looked at them in shock. This was not what they expected to happen for when their baby arrives. "We, uh, we actually have a basement. More like a den of sorts, but we do have a couch there." Arthur told them and Jane nodded along, clearly still in pain. Scully was pretty sure she was getting really close to giving birth. Out of nowhere strong winds rapped against the windows of the house and Mulder looked through one of them and saw the tornado from afar. "Scully, we have to move. Now," he said. "Arthur, you need to carry Jane into the den. I don't think she can walk," she told the man and turned to Mulder, "Honey, you have to find a bucket or anything that you can fill in clean water and bring it to the den, okay? I'll carry the rest down." She instructs and everyone went to move fast. By the time they were safely in the den, the wind was getting stronger, and they were pretty sure the tornado was getting close. If Mulder was being very, very honest, he was worried for their car, but as long as they were safe, the car didn't matter. "Dana!" Jane called out. "I feel like I need to push." Scully situated herself in front of Jane who was sat on the couch with Arthur holding her hand while Mulder was beside Scully trying to be of help to her. "I need you to push, Jane!" she instructed. Jane pushed as hard as she could every time Scully told her to do so. Her whimper, grunts, and screams echoing in the room. "Last push, Jane and your baby's going to be here," Scully told her. As she pushed the baby out, the house was rattled. Wind was blowing against it wildly. The tornado was already passing by them, and it took all of Mulder's might not to grab Scully and keep her close against him. Just as the tornado passed, a healthy, wailing baby was welcomed into the world. "Congratulations, Mom and Dad. It's a girl," Scully told Arthur and Jane who were both in tears. The baby's crying ceased when she was placed in her mother's awaiting arms. Mulder and Scully smiled at the sight before them. Mulder pulled Scully close and pressed a kiss against her temple. "I'm so proud of you," he whispered in her ear and she quickly pecked a kiss on his lips. Time seemed to fly by after Jane gave birth and Scully helped clean her up and get her settled. Their car, luckily, wasn't in pieces and the house looked alright. It was luck, they think. Jane and the baby were fast asleep, exhausted from the big event they went through, by the time Scully and Mulder decided it was time for them to go home. "We can't thank you enough for helping us," Arthur told them. "We wouldn't have known what to do if you guys didn't come." "The pleasure's all ours, Arthur. We're really glad we were able to help you guys," Scully told him. "Congratulations, she's a beautiful little girl." She hugged him. "Yes, she is. Congratulations to the both of you," Mulder told him as he pat Arthur's back. They both left after promises of coming back to check on both mother and baby, and for some dinner as soon as the new little family has settled. As they drove back home, Mulder took Scully's hand and brought it to his mouth to kiss it. He turned to smile at her. "You were amazing. You handled everything like the awesome doctor that you are." He grinned. He was beaming at her and she couldn't help but chuckle. "Thank you, and you were amazing too, you know," she told him. "You were the best assistant." When they arrived home, they were glad to see their house intact. Mulder grabs Scully's hand as they walked towards the house. The End
