Somewhere in the mountain area of Virginia

A beautiful Mulatto woman stands outside of a fairly large two-story house and watches a man and a little girl play in the yard. She suddenly looks up and the happy smile she had has turned to worry. She calls out to the man who looks in the direction the woman is looking - he sees nothing. He shrugs and picks up the child and takes her to the woman. As the man hurries into the house, the woman talks to the child as they slowly follow him. The woman takes the child to a spot in the family room and lowers her into a room under the floor that the man has uncovered. She says something to the child who nods as if getting instructions to a game. The man and woman kiss the child and cover the spot just as several cars drive up. The man grabs the woman's hand and walks quietly with her to the door.

Just as he is about to reach for it, several men force the door open and move to separate them. As they are taken to adjacent rooms, several MIBs come in and start tearing the place apart. Both the man and woman are being harshly interrogated, but the woman seems almost serene. The p.o.v. shifts and the little girl can be seen in her hidden room brushing her doll's hair with almost the same expression as the woman above. Only when one of the men interrogating the man begins beating him with his gun does the woman lose her serenity. She pushes away from the men in her group and runs to the injured man's side. She frantically tries to awaken him, but to no avail. An older, smoking man walks into the room and up to the distraught woman. He pulls her up and demands something from her. She quickly slaps him leaving a long scratch on his left cheek from the intricate ring she wears. The man pushes her down and listens as a MIB walks up and reports. Not happy with the report, he points to the couple on the floor and watches as several MIBs grab them and haul them out the door. The smoking man waits until all of his people are gone and then turns away from the door as if looking for something. When he doesn't see it, he leaves.

The little girl can be seen in her little room rocking as tears roll down her face.

A bridge in rural Virginia

A car has crashed into a bridge and is burning intensely. A small item lays on the ground and glistens as the waning light hits it. Just as the sun is setting and emergency vehicles can be seen, a close-up shows the charred but unmistakable intricacy of the woman's ring.

8:17 am
Office of the X-Files
FBI Headquarters

He's late, Special Agent Dana Scully thought to herself as she painstakingly entered every minute detail of their last case.

Scully: (Out loud) If he keeps this up, Skinner's going to be hard pressed to find a way to keep him working. (Muttering as she looks up at the wall clock above the door yet again) This makes five days in a row. (Shaking her head) You'd better get your act together because I don't want to have break in a new partner.

Scully's just about to reach for the phone when she hears the slightly off-key whistling of her partner coming down the hall. She checks to make sure her screen-saver hasn't popped on and prepares herself to give him the mother of all lectures.

Mulder: (Extremely cheerful as he walks through the door) Top o' the morning to ye, Scully. How goes the day?

Scully: (Exasperated) Does that Cro-Magnon brain of yours have any concept of what time it is?

Mulder: (Looking up at the clock innocently) Why, Scully, I do believe it's a hair after eight. (Using the puppy-dog eyes on her) Did I do something wrong?

Scully: I'd call being at least twenty minutes late for the last week and my having to cover your ass something wrong.

Mulder: (Twisting to look) You mean my pants aren't enough? (Turning serious) Look, I'm sorry. These last few days I've had my mind on something else and I'll admit the work has suffered. (Using the little boy lost look) I really am sorry. Do you forgive me?

Scully: (Giving in) All right. (Sighing) But this is the last time. (Watching him remove his coat and sit at his desk) Hold on a second.

Mulder: What?

Scully: I think you at least owe me an explanation for being late. (Standing and walking to his desk) If I'm going to put my stellar reputation on the line, I'd at least like to know it was for a good cause.

Mulder: (Thinking for a moment) You're right. (Pausing) As my best friend and most trusted partner, I think you should be the first to know.

Scully: (Nervous) Oh God, please tell me you're not taking that road trip with the Lone Gunmen to Area 51 like you've been threatening.

Mulder: If the guys could guarantee me access to the innermost holding facility, I might truly consider it. But, they can only get me as far as the Environmental Control Room and what purpose would that serve? (Shrugging) It would be a total waste of my government vacation funds to even consider it.

Scully: (Snorting) When's that stopped you before? (Crossing her arms) Seriously, what gives?

Mulder: (A look of pure joy crossing his face) Scully, ... I'm in love.

For a few minutes the room is clasped in silence. Scully silently questions why that simple phrase has the ability to render her catatonic. As she stares at his beaming face, she resigns herself to respond in the only way she can.

Scully: So, you finally found a phone sex girl who'd take your personal check?

Mulder: Scully, I'm hurt. (Grinning) You could at least pretend you were remotely happy for me.

Scully: (Snapping herself out of her blue funk) Of course. (Walking back to her desk with tons of sarcasm lacing her voice) Congratulations.

Mulder: Thank you. (Waiting until she almost sits) Aren't you curious about her?

Scully: (Slowly sitting) That's a strictly personal matter that shouldn't be discussed on company time.

Mulder: (Walking over and sitting on the edge of her desk) Oh really. (Picking up a pen) Since my personal life directly affects my "company" performance, I'd think this would be a topic of vast importance.

Scully: (Trying to ignore him as she resumes typing) Still haven't gotten over that need to be the center of attention, eh Mulder?

Mulder: (Twirling the pen) Well, actually, the spotlight's on you now. (Devilishly) You're just dying to know, aren't you?

Scully: (Grabbing the pen and slamming it down on the desk) Fine. (Ticked) Since, I'm not going to get any work done until you have your moment, you have the floor.

Mulder: Well, since you did ask nicely. (Walking back to his desk and sitting on it) How can I describe her? (Dreamily) She has the prettiest red-gold hair and her eyes are so beautiful, it's hard to tell if their green or hazel or stormy gray. (Playing it up) She has the most gorgeous cream-caramel skin and her smile could light up a dozen cities.

Scully: (Under her breath) This is getting sickening.

Mulder: What was that? (Watching her shake her head) Sorry, I guess I was hearing the vent system kicking on. (Thinking) Now, where was I? (Snapping his fingers) Oh, yeah, her smile ... (Pausing) Her smile could light up a half-dozen cities ...

Scully: (Interrupting) You said a dozen before. (Pausing) What's wrong, Mulder? Is her smile dimming already?

Mulder: (Shrugging) Well, I didn't want to sound like I was bragging. Besides, I was saving the rest of my praises for those cute little baby-doll dresses she likes to wear.

Scully: (Rolling her eyes as she looks back at the screen) I really have to get this report finished and up to Skinner. (Taking a deep breath) So, if you don't mind, I'd like to postpone this until later.

Mulder: As usual, you read my mind. (Picking up his date book) We're meeting her for lunch at this little place I know.

Scully: What?

Mulder: (Innocently) I've been telling her all about you and she's just dying to meet you. (Sweetly) Say you'll come.

Scully: (Sighing) You'll let me finish this report? (Seeing him cross his heart) Okay, but we'll go in separate vehicles. I wouldn't want to become ill from the sugary atmosphere and mess up your car.

Mulder: (Chuckling) Wouldn't have it any other way, Scully.

11:48 am
Outside the C.R.D.S.L. gates

The center can only be described as an old red-brick abbey that has been renovated to accommodate modern standards of comfort.

Mulder is waiting outside of his car when Scully arrives.

Mulder: (Looking at his watch as she lowers her window) You're late, Scully. I told you to meet me here at 11:30.

Scully: Sorry. I had to sign off on a few requisition forms before I left. (Shrugging) You know how Skinner is. (Pausing) Besides, I owe you for being late the last few days. (Looking around) So, where is she? I'm starving.

Mulder: (Gesturing toward the abbey) She's in there. (Turning to punch numbers into the security console) It'll be better if we only take one car inside. (Getting in hers) We'll take yours since it doesn't have as much emotional baggage attached to it. (Watching as the gates open and noticing the car not moving) That means enter, Scully.

Scully: (Driving in) I realize that. I'm just trying to figure out what I'm getting myself into. (Pulling up to the front and reading the sign) Center for Research and Development for Sensory Learning? (Looking at him) Is this for real?

Mulder: As real as most of our cases. (Enjoying himself) Relax. Hunter wouldn't be here if it weren't safe.

Scully: Her name's Hunter? (Curious) What is with this fascination of yours with the Great Outdoors? (Mumbling) First, Bambi, now Hunter. What's next, Thumper? (Getting out of the car) What kind of place is this?

Mulder: (Walking with her up the stairs) It's a facility that recognizes and teaches people with special gifts how to function in society. (Opening the door and guiding her in the usual way) It's fully accredited and run by a friend of mine.

Scully: (Stopping in the long foyer and gaping at the vaulted ceilings and many corridors) And, ... Hunter works here? (Remembering something) Wait a minute. what kind of ... special gifts?

An attractive young woman walks up to them from a side door.

Trini Rosenthal: (Eerily) Gifts of the mind. (Noticing Scully's non-reaction) Okay. Would you believe we're trying to unearth the hidden agenda behind the Girl Scout Cookie Craze?

Mulder: (Chuckling as he walks over and hugs Trini) Agent Dana Scully, I'd like to introduce you to Dr. Trini Rosenthal. Trini, this is my partner, Agent Scully.

Trini: (Shaking her hand) I'm pleased to meet you. (Looking at Mulder) So, who'd you tick off to to get stuck with him as a partner?

Scully: (Shaking her head) I've been trying to figure that one out myself. (Rolling her eyes) No one could possibly have anything against me that compares to this.

Trini: (Laughing) I like you. I just bet you give him what for.

Mulder: (Cunningly) Never quite like you gave it to me, but she is almost as much a pain in the ass as you.

Trini: (Seeing Scully's confused look) I bet he hasn't told you anything about me. (At her nod) Mul, I'm hurt.

Mulder: (Shrugging) She never asked.

Trini: (Putting her arm on Scully's shoulder) Mul, and I go way back. We were roommates in England due to a little mistake with the flat assignments. (At Scully's curious look) We were only lovers for a week of that year.

Scully: (With raised eyebrows) Only a week?

Trini: (Nonchalantly) What can I say? His feet were like ice. (Smiling and using a distinct Mexican accent) Seriously, I don't think he could handle my fiery Latina-Judaic spirit.

Scully: (Bemused) That's an interesting combination.

Mulder: Tell me about it. (Sighing) She got all of the good holidays off. Plus, I never knew if I was going to wake up with Carmen Miranda or Woody Allen.

Trini: (Punching him) I wasn't that bad. (Remembering Scully) Sorry about this. (Shaking her head) We never could act normal around each other.

Mulder: I'm normal. (Seeing both of their looks) For the most part. (Smiling) How's Keemo?

Trini: About as well as any All-American, Samoan-Japanese boy whose sleeping with me could be. (To Scully) We're going to have some beautiful children in therapy, don't you think? (Trying to ignore Scully's expression) What brings you way out here, Mul? As if I didn't know.

Mulder: Hunter wanted to meet my partner, so I promised her I'd bring the other major influence in my life out to see her. (Staring at Trini as if sending a message) Scully was kind of reluctant to meet her once I explained my feelings for Hunter.

Trini: (Nodding) I'm really surprised Hunter's willing to share.

Mulder: (Sobering) We've been working on it. (Looking down the hall) So, how goes it?

Trini: (Stepping back into her professional mode) She's sleeping better. (Motioning for them to follow her down a long hallway) We've been monitoring her for the last few days. (Awed) Her readings are through the roof!

Scully: (Stopping) Hunter's a *patient* here?

Trini: Not in the way you're thinking. (Stopping in front of a nondescript institution door) The Center is designed to work with people who have certain mental abilities. (Opening a chart and handing it to Scully) Hunter has tested higher than level three in psychokinesis, telepathy and precognition. She's a psi triple-header.

Scully: (Sighing) I should have known he wouldn't fall for the typical woman on the street. (Muttering) But even this is too much. (Scanning the chart) This says she's been in isolation since she's been here. (Looking back up) Why's that?

Dare Axline: (Walking up) Because she hasn't fully developed the defenses she needs to shield herself from the inner voices of everyone around her. (Looking Scully up and down) Hello, Agent Scully. Funny meeting you here.

Scully: Not really, considering who my partner is. (Turning to him) Agent Dare Axline, I'd like to introduce ...

Dare: (Moving straight to Mulder and kissing him on the lips) Hello, Tenor. (Wiping the lipstick off of his mouth) Hi, Trini, long time no see. (Turning back to Scully) Agent Mulder, Trini and I go way back.

Trini: I bet you're starting to feel like old home week, eh Mul?

Mulder: (Embarrassed as he steps away from Dare) Yeah, well ... as if there were that many ... homes to begin with. (Turning to the new arrival) I brought you into this case because you're the best Registered Play Therapist out there, not to call attention to our past.

Dare: Sorry, Tenor.

Trini: Tenor? (Winking) So that's the secret pet name I heard about.

Mulder: (Ignoring Trini) Agent Axline and I used to have a mutual passion for ... jazz. Shortly after she left private practice, she showed me how good she was on the tenor sax and ...

Scully: (Interrupting) I think we get the picture, Mulder. (Eying the other woman) What I don't understand is why you're here.

Dare: (Confused as she looks at Mulder) I thought I was evaluating Hunter today? (Glancing at her watch) I know I'm a little late, but with this being an initial there shouldn't be a problem.

Mulder: There isn't any. Scully's just not up on the latest briefing. (Ignoring Scully's glare) Everything's fine.

Dare: (Nodding and addressing Trini) It's a wonder Hunter's functioning at all considering the level of shielding she was taught.

Trini: She's a strong young lady.

Scully: (Fed up) Would someone mind telling me what's going on?

Trini: (Sympathizing) I'm sorry I went along with Mul. I really shouldn't have allowed him to keep you in the dark for as long as he has. (Opening the door to an observation room) I think the best way to answer your questions is to show you rather than tell you. (Turning to Dare) The door to the left leads to the room.

Dare: (Nodding) Thanks. (Stopping before leaving) Do I need to clear my thoughts or whatever to evaluate her? I don't want to do anything that might hurt her.

Trini: Don't worry about that. (Pointing to the rooms) This area is completely shielded. (Seeing Scully roll her eyes) As hard as it is to believe, it is similar to sound-proof, only for the mind. This is where we evaluate and begin training our clients.

Mulder: (To Dare) Are you sure you're up to this? She can really play some mind games.

Dare: (Smiling) If I could put up with you and your moods for two months, I'm sure I can handle anything.

Mulder: (Watching as Dare leaves and feeling Scully's eyes on him) We were only together for a short time. (Almost pleadingly) I introduced her to her husband and was best man at their wedding, for God's sake.

Scully: I didn't say a word, Mulder. (Noticing the window they've stopped in front of) Are we going to view a session?

Trini: If Hunter cooperates. (Pushing the intercom button) You can go in now, Dare. (Watching as the woman walks in and takes a seat) Here goes nothing. (Pushing a silent button) Let the games begin.

Another door to the room opens and ... an auburn-haired child of no more than ten, walks into the room clasping a doll. She sees Dare already sitting and promptly turns toward the wall of toys beside her. Before anyone can even think of what she might have planned, several of the items rise and float around Dare's head. The little girl walks right over to the woman and watches her.

Dare: Hello, Hunter. I'm Dr....

Hunter: I know who you are, Dr. Dare Axline. Or would you prefer to be called Agent Axline? (Motioning to what appears to be a mirror but is actually one-way glass) I suppose Fox wants you to evaluate me. (Turning to the mirror and talking to it) I'm not crazy, Fox.

Dare: No one said you were, Hunter. We were just a little concerned with what you've gone through lately. (Looking up at the still floating toys) Would you mind bringing these down? They're starting to make me dizzy.

Hunter: (Nodding at them and watching as they drop) There. (Sweetly) I hope that met with your satisfaction.

Dare: Only if it met with yours.

Hunter: (Rolling her eyes and letting out a deep breath) Oh brother! (Thinking for a moment and walking right up to Dare's face) I could easily look at you and cause your mind to burn with a fire so intense, Hell would seem like the Arctic.

Dare: (Calmly) You would like to torch my mind, but I'm not for hurting. (Nodding toward the doll she holds) You could pretend the doll's me and torch it if you like.

Hunter: (Solemnly) Not this doll - my Daddy gave it to me. (Turning and pointing at another) How about that one with the fake blonde hair?

Dare: That's for you to decide. (Grinning) And by the way, this is natural.

Hunter: (Staring at the woman and then shrugging) You'll do. (Taking a deep breath and sitting as if she were leading the session) What's on your mind?

Trini: (On the other side of the mirror) Damn, she's good!

Mulder: That's why I wanted her to try to work with Hunter. (Grinning) She always knew how to keep me in line. (Looking at his partner who's been silent) You okay, Scully?

Scully: (Awed) Who is she, Mulder?

Mulder: My Goddaughter. (Looking back at the little girl) Her parents were killed in an accident several weeks ago and they had declared me her legal guardian. (Putting his finger on the glass and watching as the little girl stands and walks to the mirror and places her finger in almost the exact spot) They knew I'd take care of her and wouldn't try to exploit her. (Whispering) They probably even knew how much I'd come to love her. (Seeing the child return to Dare and turning to Scully) We understand each other.

Scully: That does explain why you've been so out of it lately. But why didn't you tell me about her before? I would have have tried to help however I could.

Mulder: I know you would have. But, I was trying to deal with getting Hunter and losing Sevh and Sherron and I didn't want you to have to deal with more of my problems.

Scully: I'm here now. (Looking at the little girl as she touches his arm) But you were right about one thing: she is beautiful.

Trini: (Laughing) With just a touch of Satan in those bones. (Watching Dare leave the other room and addressing her as she enters) Well?

Dare: We're definitely going to have to talk some more. (Nodding at the little girl) she's seen a lot and it's going to take a while for us to even scratch the surface. (Smiling at Mulder) She does remind me a lot of you, though. (Pausing) Are you sure she's only your Goddaughter?

Trini: (Guffawing) Don't look in my direction. He was always careful with me! Mulder: I swear, she's Sevh's. She even has that Zachary nose.(Very serious) Thank God it was tempered by Sherron's good looks.

Trini: I was really sorry to hear about them. (Empathizing) I knew how you felt about them.

Mulder: (Seeing Scully's left out look and explaining) Sevh and I grew up together. His dad and mine were co-workers and, in my father's own way, friends. He met Sherron shortly after I went to Oxford and they stayed with us for a while after they were married. (Choking up) We sort of drifted apart after Hunter was born, but they still named me her Godfather.

Dare: (Walking to him to comfort) Remember when we spent that whole afternoon looking for a gift for her.

Mulder: (Grinning as he remembers) You fought me for hours before you let me buy that UFO teething ring. (Smugly) I always won.

Dare: Only on things that didn't matter. (To Trini) Did he tell you how I oblit- erated him on the soccer field? (Towards Scully) It was the only place I *wouldn't* let him score.

Mulder: And for revenge, I introduced her to the ex-world champion soccer player, Kirk Ansel. ( Putting up his hands) Not that I'm bitter, but I can guarantee she's lost more games than she's won.

Dare: With him, winning is definitely not everything. (Turning bact to the mirror) How long has Hunter been able to manipulate things in this manner?

Trini: (Looking at the file) She was first documented as psychokinetic at seven months when she started moving her stuffed animals into her crib. (Reading) Her documented awareness came when she was three. Her nanny refused to allow her to play with a group of children in the mall and she promptly caused the woman's skirt to raise up over her head, temporarily blinding her so that she fell in the mall fountain.

Scully: She pushed her in.

Trini: (Shaking her head) Hunter was almost seventeen feet from the nanny when the incident was taking place.(Handing her the file) It's there in black and white along with several other little incidents.

Dare: Exactly what are her capabilities?

Mulder: She's a level-four psychokinetic, precognitor, and telepath, almost level-five, and she has an eidetic memory. She can't physically make a person do something but she can make them think she has.

Dare: God. (Sighing) I felt something like that when I was with her. (Thinking) My recommendation is to keep on working with her in this field and we'll continue with my sessions. (Looking at all of them) I'm not saying she's going to open up and tell us everything, but I do believe we'll make progress. (Glancing at her watch) I've got to run. (To Mulder) Drop by the house sometime; Kirk would love to see you more than once or twice a year. (To the others as she leaves) Talk to you later, Trini. Nice seeing you again, Agent Scully.

Scully: (Waiting until she's sure the other one's gone) Do you guys realize how weird this all sounds? I can't believe she took this seriously. That any of you *trained* professionals took this seriously! (Exasperated) The only thing that child is capable of is some type of mass hypnosis. (To Trini) You said yourself she's a fantastic manipulator. (Not noticing the child staring at them almost as if she could see through the wall) Why can't you see that's all she's doing? (Shaking her head) No one can do the things you've said she can.

Trini: I agree with you only to the point that few people are at her level. (Smiling at the image of the child) Even in my wildest dreams, I couldn't do the things she can.

Scully: (Confused) What?

Mulder: Oh, Scully, did I forget to tell you that, in addition her duties as director of the center, Trini's a world-renowned, well-documented level-two precognitor?

Scully: (Sighing) No, you didn't. (Turning to the other woman) I apologize for my attitude, but I really don't see the connections you do. (Pausing) I under- stand that we only use a tenth of our brains and if we were to tap into the other parts the possibilities could be endless, but all of this surpasses even the wildest of cognitive theories. (Shaking her head) It all seems like.....

Trini: (Understanding) The whole mind thing is something great fiction comes from. (Pausing) I had the same reaction from Keemo when we first got together. It's perfectly natural. (Pausing again) But if you think that Hunter is anything but real, you're sadly mistaken. (Walking back to the panel and punching a button) Melanie, could you bring Hunter in here? (Turning back to them) But, I have a feeling that the only way you're going to accept her is if you experience her yourself. (Moving to the door as Hunter is shown in) It's okay, Baby-Girl.

Hunter hesitantly walks in as if waiting for something to happen to her. When it doesn't, she relaxes and looks around. Ignoring Scully, she runs straight to Mulder.

Hunter: (Jumping into his arms) Fox! I felt you were here. Trini didn't let out that you were coming today, but I knew. (Whispering loud enough for everyone to hear) That's her, isn't it?

Scully: (Walking to them) Hello.

Hunter: (Looking at her) Hello, Dana Katherine Scully. (Seeing her shocked look) Dont worry, Fox told me all about you. (Cocking her head and reaching out to touch Dana's forehead) But he didn't tell me you were such a disbeliever. (Touching Mulder's face) How'd she get paired with you?

Mulder: (Shaking his head) Not you too?

12:25 pm
Center Commissary

Hunter is sitting at a table towards the back while Mulder and Scully are in line paying for lunch. They walk to the table and Mulder gesture for Scully to take the seat opposite of him putting Hunter in the middle.

Mulder: (Pushing a tray in front of the child) Here you go, Squirt. (Smirking at Scully) This is the most nutritious and well-balanced meal on the menu geared for the average nine-year-old as requested by the most esteemed Dr. Scully.

Hunter: (Frowning) Then maybe she should have it. (She looks at her fork and it moves to one of the less colorful globs on the plate) Fox, I think that brown stuff over there moved on its own.

Mulder: (Eating as if nothing is wrong) It probably saw the fork heading in its direction without benefit of your hands and decided to run for cover. (Giving her a stern look) What have I told you about that? If we were anyplace other than here, that would have scared a few people.

Hunter: Either that or I would've been signed up on a multi-million dollar contract for films or television. (Noticing Scully staring) I'm sorry I "moved" the fork like that in front of you. (Sweetly) But, I've found people tend to react badly when I float knives.

Mulder: That's enough, Hunter. (Nodding towards his partner) I think you owe Agent Scully an apology. Especially considering she's seen a lot worse stuff than your tricks.

Scully: (Shaking her head) That's all right, Mulder. After all, I'm in her territory. (Turning to the child) But, just to set the record straight, I was not impressed with your particular talents. (Pausing) I just couldn't believe Mulder could put up with such a little brat.

Hunter: (Angry) I AM NOT A BRAT! (Calmly and quietly) If I were you, I wouldn't push me to the point where I'd do something you wouldn't like.

Scully: Since I've had to deal with a lot worse than a three-and-a-half foot walking terror, I'd like to see you try.

Mulder: Ladies, as much as I usually enjoy a rousing battle of wills, I really wouldn't like this to deteriorate into a first class X-File.

Hunter: (Smugly) Scared something unexplainable would happen to Dr. Scully?

Mulder: (Shaking his head) Nope. I was referring to your unexplained inability to sit after she got through with you. (Smiling) She may look small, but I'll lay odds she could take both of us on without breaking a sweat. (Sagely) Remember what I told you: never underestimate anyone.

Hunter: (Sedately) Yes, sir. (Eying Scully) Are you a natural red head?

Scully: (Taken aback and trying to decide if Mulder is choking or laughing) That came out of left field. (Deciding he's choking and pounding him on the back) What have you been telling her?

Mulder: (Recovering) Nothing, I swear. (Coughing as he stage-whispers) Besides, there's only one way to really tell, and I ...

Scully: (Jumping in) Mulder!

Hunter: (Laughing) That was funny, Fox. Do it again!

Mulder: Maybe later. (Sobering) How've they been treating you? Any complaints?

Hunter: Nope. (Chomping a carrot stick) Yesterday, Willie forgot we weren't in a shielded room and set off the sprinklers. All of the first-levels were fit to be tied.

Scully: (Puzzled) I don't understand.

Hunter: Willie Wharton is a second-level kinetic who can manipulate fire at whim, or in this case, ... at the liberty of low fiber intake. (Pausing for effect) Anyway, first levels are people with only a touch of ESP or telepathia. They could sense something was about to happen, but they didn't know what it was. (Shaking her head) Most of them were drenched. (Aside to Mulder) I made sure that Trini requisitioned lots of roughage for his diet from now on.

Mulder: (Patting her hand) That's my girl. Now, what ...

Hunter: (Shivering as her eyes grow large) Scully, duck!

Scully: What?

While Scully is frozen in confusion, her chair is yanked away from under her without help of human hand, and she lands squarely on the floor. Just as Mulder is turning to fuss at Hunter, an industrial-sized trash can hurls past the spot Scully was just in. The adults turn to the child as if in a daze.

Hunter: (Nearly in hysterics) I'm sorry, Fox. I had to do it or she would have been hurt. You didn't sense it in time and I had to get her down as fast I could. (Hugging his legs and pleading) Please don't be angry! (Gasping) It was all I could do. Honest!

Mulder: (Lowering himself and taking her into his arms) It's okay. You did fine, Baby-Girl. (Brushing her hair away from her wet face) I'm proud of how you helped Scully. (Looking at the container smashed against the wall) She would have been really hurt if you hadn't done what you did. (Failing to calm her) Come on, Baby. Everything's going to be okay. (Nodding at Scully who's moved to them) See, she's fine. (Not getting a response) Hunter! (Looking around as he picks her up and cradles her) We need to get you out of here. (Noticing the child's limpness and seeing Trini rushing over) Scully, tell Trini to call ahead for them to get Hunter's crib ready. Tell them she's had another attack! (Starting to run) Hold on, Baby! (Kissing her forehead) Hold on.

He rushes out of the room and down the hall as Scully runs to Trini. After they move to another one of the intercom panels and Trini speaks into it, Scully and Trini head in the same direction as Mulder and Hunter.

FBI Headquarters
X-Files Office

Scully is pacing when Mulder walks through the door.

Scully: (Watching his face as he closes the door) Is everything okay?

Mulder: (Sitting and running his hand through his hair) It looks like she's going to be fine. No lasting affects. (Looking at her) How about you?

Scully: A little bruised, but no lasting damage. (Walking to his desk) What happened, Mulder? What was all of that about?

Mulder: (Leaning back and covering his eyes) One of the clients lost control two tables over from us. (Sighing) Hunter had picked up on the lady's uneasiness, but she just assumed it was coming form you. It wasn't until she felt the movement of the can that she reacted. (Looking at his partner) I think I should apologize for lunch. I didn't think it was going to go so wrong.

Scully: Don't worry about it. I'm more concerned with what happened afterwards.

Mulder: (Taking a deep breath) The main reason Hunter's at the center is she doesn't deal well with her abilities. She can't shield herself well enough to block out other's thoughts and actions. Because her parents kept her hidden away, they didn't feel it was necessary to work on her shields. (Shaking his head) That was a shielded cafeteria and she still felt that. (Pausing) One of the other reasons is she can't handle her responses. She always doubts what she did or what she couldn't do. (Slumping his shoulders) As an adult who suffers from this inconvenient malady, I can tell you it's not something a child can handle very well. So as a result, Hunter has "attacks" where she can't breathe or move. Her blood pressure shoots up and her heart starts doing some really fun things. (Rolling his head to release tension) If she doesn't get to a special "crib" before a certain amount of time passes, she ... Well, you get the idea. (Hitting the desk and startling Scully) Dammit! She was supposed to be getting better.

Scully: (Taking his hand to see if he broke the skin and putting it down when she notices he didn't) How much did you know about her before she came to you?

Mulder: (Sheepishly) Not as much as I should. (Sullenly) Sevh and Sherron kept her pretty well sequestered for most of her life.

Scully: Then how do you know this wasn't an improvement? For all you know, any little thing could have set her off before. (Smiling) You have to believe she's getting better if you want to help her.

Mulder: (Grinning) She *was* trying to smile when I left. Maybe she is improving. (Thinking) Now, if I can just get her out in mainstream society without her blowing a gasket or blowing someone else's, life would truly be worth living.

Scully: (Chuckling) You're irrepressible. (Remembering) Oh, I almost forgot. A mail courier stopped by asking for you. When I told him you might be a while and I could sign for whatever, he became really nervous and said he'd catch up with you later. (Eying him) Is there something I should know?

Mulder: No. (Shrugging as his mind drifts) It's probably something from my mother. (Looking over at her) You know she never sends my "care" packages to the apartment. That would reek of too much intimacy.

Scully: I suppose, (Uneasily) but there's never been a problem with me signing before.

8:47 pm
Skinner's Office
FBI Headquarters

The chair is turned facing the window but a steady stream of smoke can be seen above it. A woman dressed in government-standard walks in and plants herself in front of the desk.

Cigarette-Smoking Man: (Turning to face her) Good evening, Agent McNeary.

Patricia McNeary: A.D. Skinner's not going to like your using his office like this.

C.S.M.: (Puffing away) What Skinner does and does not like is not of any concern to me. (Pausing) He is only one of many expendable pieces in the worldwide game.

McNeary: And is that how you see me? As expendable?

C.S.M.: (Not backing down) You are what you are. (Looking her straight in the eye) I trust you have reviewed the file on your latest assignment.

McNeary: (Sitting) Several times. (Reading from the file) I find it rather interesting this particular ... problem hasn't been eradicated. (Glancing back at him) I've never known one to exist this long.

C.S.M.: (Taking a long drag) When it's such a high profile situation like this one, we tend to find other ways to ... curtail activities. (Standing and moving to her seat) But, *that* is none of *your* concern. You have your orders. (Escorting her to the door) Your main goal is to obtain the papers without ... damaging the principals. We don't need any unnecessary attention.

McNeary: What about the new problem? How much pressure am I allowed to exert?

C.S.M.: (Shrugging it off) Use your own discretion on that matter. You know from the file that it wouldn't take much to push the secondary target over the edge. Under our agenda, we don't see that particular target causing too much interference. (Pausing) It's a simple matter of exposing it to the one thing that will ensure complete and total shutdown. (Taking another drag) Our only wish is that nothing be tied in with those papers. (Nodding) Therefore, as far as that little matter is concerned, (Intensely) you may do what you want.

McNeary: (Preparing to leave) Thank you. (Smiling) Who knows? This might just be the thing to shut *your* problem up as well.

C.S.M.: It just might. (Closing the door after her) And once you've done your job, (Drag) it just might go a long way in shutting you up ... only more (Beat) permanently.

8:00 am
X-Files Office

Scully seems all prepared to cover Mulder yet again as she walks into the room. She's somewhat surprised when she sees him already working.

Scully: Mulder? What are you doing here?

Mulder: (Smirking) Last time I checked, I was department head and this was required.

Scully: (Rolling her eyes) You know what I mean. (Sitting at her desk) It's just disconcerting to see you here on time after the last few days. (Looking at him) What gives?

Mulder: (Sighing) Would you believe I fantasized about you all night and couldn't wait to get here to see your lovely face? (At "The Look") Okay. (Pausing) Hunter had a bad night. She had some pretty intense nightmares and called for me to stop them.

Scully: How on earth was she able to access a phone all night? I thought Trini's people monitored that kind of thing.

Mulder: Who said she used a phone? (Catching her confused look) Hunter and I have sort of bonded in a way that's hard to explain.

Scully: But, isn't that your area of specialty? Explaining the unexplainable.

Mulder: (Mouthing Ha-Ha) Hunter and I have established some type of telepathic link. She can pick up my feelings and thoughts and I can pick up on a lot of hers.

Scully: (Shaking her head) Forget telepathy, Mulder. She's just got you wrapped around her little finger. (Putting on her glasses as she searches for a file) You were still dealing with what happened yesterday and just assumed you heard her need for you.

Mulder: Always the skeptic, even with floating silverware dancing around your head. (Reaching for the phone as it rings) Hello. (Pause) Hi, Trini, what's up? (Listening) Oh, really. (Beat) I see. Would you mind repeating that for Scully? (Pushing a button on the phone) Trini? Are you there?

Trini: (Over the phone) Where else would I be, Mul? (Chuckling) Hello, Dana. How are you this morning?

Scully: Fine, and you?

Trini: Okay, I guess. (Pausing) We had a rough night out here.

Mulder: Would you mind repeating what you said about last night?

Trini: No problem. (Sighing) Hunter was really restless all night long. She had nightmares for most of the night and kept crying for Mul. (Pausing) The night watch couldn't deal with it, so Keemo and I came and stayed with her. (Tired sigh) The kid was sending off so much energy, she agitated everyone who wasn't shielded. (Pausing) Even with my level of training, she gave me a headache. I can only guess what it did to you.

Mulder: Don't worry about it. (With a pained voice) I normally don't get too much sleep anyway.

Scully: Mulder was just telling me something to that effect before you called. (Smirking) Only, he says he sensed it.

Trini: (Surprised) I can't believe he admitted that. (beat) Hunter and I have been trying to conv ...

Mulder: (Cutting in) Well, thanks a lot for the info about last night. I promise to be out there after Dare's session for lunch. (Moving to disconnect over the mumblings of Trini) See you in a bit. Bye now.

Scully:(Confused) That was rude.

Mulder: I know, but if I had let her follow her train of thought, we would have been on the phone for another hour.

Scully: (Thinking about something and then, standing and walking to his desk) Tell me something, Mulder. At lunch yesterday, Hunter said something about you not sensing the problem in time. (Pushing her glasses up) I didn't think much of it then because of her attack, but hearing Trini's comment has peaked my interest. (Looking him straight in the eye) 'Fess up, Mulder? Is there something else I should know about you?

Mulder: (Seductively) there's a lot you don't know, but I certainly hope you have the patience and ... flexibility to find out.

Scully: (Punching him in the arm) I'm serious.

Mulder: Okay. Okay. (Raising his hands) Just don't hit me anymore. (Grinning at her as she moves slightly away) Somehow, Trini and Hunter have convinced themselves I'm like them, ... only on a lesser scale.

Scully: (Laughing) You're kidding, right?

Mulder: Nope. (Beat) When the kid first came to me, she would go on and on about our mutual skills. (Chagrined) Somehow, she got Trini in on it and *Trini* started talking about the bond we had at Oxford and how we could sense things that happened to each other and a few things that happened around campus. (Shrugging) I tried passing it off as just a unique bonding experience that culminated in a sexual relationship, but they wouldn't listen. I didn't press the issue because they are pretty important in my life and together they could mentally kick my ass. (Giving her his best puppy-dog look) What's a man to do, Scully?

Scully: (Not taking the bait) Have you ever been tested for psi abilities?

Mulder: Well, I have been known to become invisible when one of my dates' boyfriends showed up at the front door. Does that count?

Scully: I'm being serious.

Mulder: (Shocked) Do you know how this sounds? (Standing) You, the perpetual skeptic, asking me, the poster-child for "Strange Tales of the Bewitched and Alien-ated" if I have been tested for psi. (Looking at her intently) It's got to be the second shot heard 'round the world'. (Really hamming it up) Pessimists the world over are probably gasping their last breaths because you clapped and destroyed their shroud of non-belief.

Scully: (Sighing and shaking her head) I was only trying to come up with an explanation for this "mental" bond between you and m ..., I mean, you and Hunter. (Shrugging) For just a minute, it seemed plausible.

Mulder: (Trying to alleviate her uneasiness) I understand. (Pushing a strand of hair away from her eye before turning away) No, I've never been tested for psi. Unlike all of the various I.Q. tests they loved to spring on me as a child, there really wasn't an accurate test for that when and where I grew up.

Scully: What stopped you testing as an adult?

Mulder: (Almost sounding defeated) Would you believe it was a truth I just couldn't stand knowing?

Scully: (Coming up right behind him) I don't understand, Mulder.

Mulder: (Nearly whispering) I don't think I could have lived with myself for not stopping "them" with whatever means I had available. (Taking a deep breath) If I knew for sure, without a shadow of a doubt, I had abilities that could have kept Sam with me and I didn't use them, I don't ... Well, you can guess how I'd feel.

Scully: (Chokingly) Probably the same way as someone who wasn't able to prevent her sister from walking into a trap.

Hearing the tears in his partner's voice, Mulder turns back to her and gathers her into his arms conveying a surplus of sympathy and empathy in his touch.

Mulder: (Soothingly) Sometimes life really bites. (Pausing) But that's when we have to pull on our thicker and tougher skins so that we can protect the more vulnerable ones.

Scully: Like Hunter.

Mulder: (Nodding) Yeah, like Hunter. And, ... (Smiling down at her) little red-haired girls who have all of life's hits and misses chipping away at their faith.

Scully: (Looking at him over the rim of her glasses) Be glad I don't have my gun handy after that "little" remark. (Shaking her head) "Strange Tales of the Bewitched and Alien-ated," Mulder? (Smirking) I am seriously worried about what goes on behind the scenes of that mind of yours.

Mulder: (Grinning back as he steps away) There's one way to find out, *Little* Girl. (Waggling his eyebrows and leering at her) Do you want the G-rated key or the NC-17 one?

12:00 pm
The Center
Dr. Rosenthal's Office

Mulder and Scully are waiting in an office when Trini and an extremely tall and handsome man walk in.

Trini: (Shaking off Mulder's attempts to stand) Don't bother, Mul. (Sitting behind her desk) Sorry we're running late. (Looking up at the man beside her) There was a little disturbance on one of the wards.

Mulder: (Upset) It wasn't Hunter, was it?

Keemo Antanaka: (Soothingly with a Hawaiian flavor) No worry, Brudda? (Smiling at Scully and taking on a cultured tone) Since the other two seem to have lost their manners, I think it's up to us to introduce ourselves. (Really grinning as he slightly bows) I'm Keemo Lord Antanaka, seventeenth ancestral Territorial Prince of the Hawaiian-Samoan Islands and thirtieth in royal succession to the Japanese throne.

Mulder: (Rolling his eyes) I thought after you hooked up with Trini and dumped the dating scene, you quit using that line.

Trini: (Laughing) And give up his major claim to fame. (Snorting) He'd rather give up me than the bragging rights to his royal lineage.

Keemo: (To Scully) Ignore them. They still don't know how to react in the presence of greatness. (Holding out his hand) And you are?

Scully: (Bemused) Dana Scully. (Nodding at Mulder as she shakes the other man's hand) His partner and the only thing that keeps his head out of the clouds and his feet out of his mouth.

Keemo: (Tossing his head back and roaring with laughter) I like her, Brudda.

Mulder: (Chagrined) So glad she meets with your approval. (Turning back to Trini with a more serious tone) Why were we told to wait in here instead of in Hunter's room?

Trini: No major reason. (Pausing) I just wanted to touch base with you before you met with her. (At his look) Since you hung up on me this morning when I broached the subject of your "gifts," I thought it would be better if you didn't mention her keeping you up all night.

Scully: Is there any particular reason why he shouldn't?

Trini: Only that she won't let you eat in peace if he does. (Standing) We've got a table reserved in the shielded cafeteria. (Conspiratorially) It's well hidden from the others and you don't have to worry about flying trash cans pinning you to the wall.

Mulder: (Also standing) Thanks, but no. (Holding his hand out for Scully) My ladies and I have plans elsewhere.

Trini: (Touching his arm) Are you sure about this? (Concerned) I don't think she's ready for that big a step.

Mulder: I have faith that she's improving and ready for something like this. (Placing his hands on her shoulders) Won't you trust me enough to try?

Trini: (Shaking her head and fighting a grin) Put like that, how can I not?

4:30 pm
X-Files Office

Mulder and Scully are working at their respective desks when someone knocks at the door.

Mulder: (Not looking up) It's open. (Feeling a presence and looking up) Can I help you?

Messenger: (Nervously) Yeah, umm ... I'm looking for a Fox Mulder.

Scully: You're the gentleman from yesterday. (Removing her glasses) I told you I could have saved you a trip back if you had just left the package with me.

Messenger: I had instructions to only give it to Fox Mulder; nobody else. (Turning to the man) That you?

Mulder: (Standing and moving toward the man until he notices him step back) I'm he.

Messenger: (Watching Scully out of the corner of his eye) I've got a package for you if you have the proper ID.

Mulder: (Throwing Scully a glance as he pulls out his wallet) It's not my best picture, but it does get me into all of the good bars.

Messenger: It'll do. (Handing him the package) Don't need your signature or nothing, so I'll be getting out of your hair. (Turning to leave)

Mulder: Don't you want your tip?

Messenger: (Turning back and staring at Mulder) No. That was taken care of a long time ago.(He leaves rather quickly)

Both agents stare at the space where the man had stood a mere few seconds before.

Scully: That was odd, even for one of your acquaintances. (Curious) So, what do you think it is?

Mulder: (Looking at it from every side) I don't know, but at least it isn't ticking. (Glancing around) Speaking of ticking, what time is it?

Scully: About twenty till five. (Realizing what she said) Aren't you supposed to pick up Hunter for the weekend at five?

Mulder: (Panicked) Where'd the time go? (Placing the package on the desk as he puts on his jacket and coat) Since Trini's not too happy about me taking her this weekend, all I'd have to do is be a few minutes late and she'd kibosh the whole thing. (Heading towards the door) Call me later.

Scully watches him leaving and glances over to his desk.

Scully: Wait! (Moving to his desk and picking up the package) You almost forgot something. (Taking it to him) I, for one, am extremely curious to know what it is whether or not you are.

Mulder: (Grinning) Well, if you're that curious and brave enough to deal with Hunter, you're more than welcome to join us.

Scully: Okay. (Thinking) Considering the last biology experiment I saw being conducted in your fridge, I think I'll bring dinner.

Mulder: (Knowingly) Wouldn't have it any other way, Scully.

He leaves as Scully just stands there shaking her head.

8:30 pm
Apartment 42

The three of them are gathered around the coffee table playing a board game.

Hunter: (Reading from a card)"Pick one of your opponents and dare him/her to describe a paranormal experience he/she was directly involved in." (Dimpling as she takes on a devilish look) Since I'm pretty sure Fox could tell us a good story right off the top of his head, I think I'll choose Dana.

Scully: (Rolling her eyes) Why'd I know you were going to pick me? (Shaking her head) This has got to be the weirdest game I have ever had the displeasure of playing. (Turning to her partner) Where did you find it?

Mulder: Would you believe in a little shop in the French Quarter of New Orleans. (Grinning at Hunter) I had the choice of this or a copy of the incantation that brought Elvis back to life.

Hunter: Elvis was dead?

Scully: (Throwing up her hands) Oh, God! Not another one.

Hunter: (Innocently) Another what? (Curious) Don't tell me that you are one of the misguided individuals who believe the King has actually left this reality plane? (Laughing) And they say I'm weird! (Suddenly remembering) But, getting back to the subject at hand, I do believe that the question was yours, Agent Scully.

Scully: (Making a face) Your point being. (Thinking) This really doesn't fall into my realm of expertise, but ... (Quietly) The night my father died, he came back to my apartment. I think he wanted to say goodbye and to let me know I would never be alone.

Mulder: (Caressing her shoulder) You never told me that.

Scully: (Trying to cover the tears in her eyes) No, I didn't. (Smiling) But then again, you never asked.

Mulder: Touche, Mademoiselle Scully. (Picking a card and reading it) "If you could attune your spirit with any other person's spirit on the planet, living or dead, who would it be?"

Scully: (Seeing the gleam in his eye) And Marvin the Martian does not count as a person.

Mulder: (Chagrined) Damn! (Thinking) I guess I'd want to tune into Skinner. (At Scully's shocked look) It would be the best way to really see which way the wind blows for him.

Hunter: (Teasingly) I thought it would have been Mademoiselle Scully. (Laughing at their expressions) Thank God I have a photographic memory. I want to remember those faces forever.

Scully: Ha-Ha. (Reaching for a card and taking on her own devilish look) My turn. (Reading) "Psionically" ... (Pausing and looking at Mulder questioningly) Is that really a word? (Continuing) "Psionically speaking, when and with whom was your most memorable conversation?" (Pretending to contemplate who to give the question) Since turnabout is fair play, this one absolutely reeks of Hunter.

Hunter: Maybe you should give that one to Fox. Who knows what he's talked to.

Scully: Oh no, Twinkle-Toes. You pinned me, so now it's my turn.

Hunter: (Looking at her watch and yawning) Boy, it's past my bedtime and I sure am tired.

Mulder: (Not buying it) Answer your question and you can put on your pj's.

Hunter: (Upset) I don't like that question - I'll take the next one.

Scully: You'll take this one or else.

Hunter: Fine! (Near tears) My most memorable psi conversation was with my mommy the day she and my daddy were killed. She kept telling me everything was going to be fine even though we both knew it wasn't. (Scattering the game with her mind) Was that a good enough answer? (Running into the other room and slamming the door)

Scully: (Shaken) Was that something else you neglected to tell me?

Mulder: (Standing) Only because I didn't know. (Sighing) You once said I was like a flower, unfurling one petal at a time. (Running his hand through his hair) Well, I'm discovering what you meant the more time I spend with her. (Looking toward the bedroom) I'm gonna go check on her. (Eying Scully) Are you going to be okay?

Scully: Yeah. Go take care of the kid.

Scully absently picks up the pieces of the scattered game, shaking her head as she reads some of the questions. By the time she gathers the last of it, ten minutes have passed and she looks worriedly at the still closed door. As if on cue, the door opens and Mulder walks in with a pj'd Hunter in his arms.

Scully: (Smiling) Is everything okay?

Mulder: (Brushing the hair from the little girl's face as he sits them down) I think we'll live. (Kissing her head) We had a very interesting conversation, didn't we, Hunter? (Shifting her) You think you feel up to telling Scully?

Hunter: I'm sorry, Dana. (Turning to her) I shouldn't have thrown a tantrum over answering the question. (Slyly) Fox, thinks I still haven't developed enough people skills to function very well, only he won't say so out loud.

Scully: (Throwing a glare at him) What does he know? (Moving back to the couch) Everything was going pretty well until we pushed you on the question. (Pausing) We should have accepted you didn't want to answer it.

Hunter: You answered yours and you weren't comfortable with it, so it was only fair that I answer mine. (Holding her head down) I just don't like talking about my mom. (Mumbling) It hurts too much.

Scully: (Touching her arm) I know. It still hurts for me to talk about my dad and my sister. But, you know what helps me. (Seeing her shake her head) I try to remember what they were like before they went away. (Nodding at Mulder) I know. Why don't we try to remember some of the earlier times? (Shrugging) Who knows - it might just help.

Mulder: Couldn't hurt. (Looking at an unsure Hunter) Why don't I start?

Mulder begins to remember stories about his father and sister and Scully soon is making them laugh at tales from her own family. Slowly, Hunter starts adding her own until she is comfortable enough to participate completely. They continue like this for hours until the little girl starts to droop.

Mulder: Someone looks like she's ready to drop. (Glancing at his partner) What do you think, Scully?

Scully: I know that I'm running pretty flat, so I can imagine how Ms. Zachary must feel.

Hunter: (Yawning) I am a little tired.

Mulder: You must be exhausted then, Squirt. You just admitted something I never thought you would. (Standing her up) Go get into bed and I'll come in and kiss you goodnight.

Hunter: Okay. (Moving away) Goodnight, Dana. (She stops, turns back to the woman and hugs her before heading towards the room)

Mulder: (Surprised) Uhh, Hunter ... before you go in could you hand me that package in the kitchen?

Hunter: Okay. (She walks to get it, but after a few minutes returns empty-handed) Fox.

Mulder: (Walking to her) What is it?

Hunter: (Looking panicked) I don't want to touch it. (Scared) It *feels* funny. I ...

Mulder: It's okay, Squirt. I'll get it. (Motioning towards the bedroom) You go on to bed.

She quickly leaves and Scully moves to his side.

Scully: What was that about?

Mulder: The hug or the package thing? Scully: (Grinning) I guess both.

Mulder: (Seductively) Well, Scully, I've told you I find you irresistible. I guess Hunter's finding it out as well.

Scully: More like she was so tired she forgot she doesn't like me. (Walking in and grabbing the package) What do you think about her and this?

Mulder: I don't know. (Walking back to the sofa) When I went to get her, she avoided getting too close to it from the time she got into the car till we made it here. (Taking the package and turning it over) Who knows what she was picking up off of it.

Scully: Have you figured out who sent it or what it might be?

Mulder: Nope. (Removing the top wrapper) Whoa. Check out all of these postmarks. (Looking at all four sides) This thing has seen more places than Madonna's underwear.

Scully: How politically incorrect of you. (Watching as he tears the rest of the outside papers off) Are those files? (Taking one of them and glancing at it while he reads something) Mulder, most of this information is over thirty years old. (Perplexed) Who'd send you thirty year old files?

Mulder: (Finishing the letter) Would you believe my father?

Scully: What?

Mulder: (Jerking as if hit) I've just been summoned by the princess. (Obviously shaken as he stands and hands her the letter) Read this while I take care of Hunter. (He leaves)

Scully: (Reading aloud) Dear Son, if you are reading this I have been dead for at least a year. There is no way for me to gauge how long it has been since I implemented my plan, but I am hoping this has reached you many years from this day - (She gasps) February 27, 1974. I apologize for the cloak and dagger, but I want to ensure you receive these files. Some of the people I have been working with wouldn't want them to see the light of day. Fox, there are so many things I want to say to you and I hope I had the chance to tell you before I died. Even if I did, there are probably so many questions that you need answered and the only way to do that is by giving you the information to understand my life's work. Because of the very nature of my work, I planned for this parcel to travel the world over for up to thirty-five years, if necessary. At this time, I can only say I'm sorry - for what you know and will learn from these pages. I hope, in time, you will learn to forgive me. Goodbye, my son. Never stop searching for the truth.

Mulder: (Sitting down) Pretty intense, huh?

Scully: (Reassuringly) He must have really wanted you to get this. (Reaching for another file) What do you think is in here?

Mulder: (Shaking his head) I don't know. Probably information about Paper Clip. (Shrugging) God knows what else.

Scully: Well, I guess there's only one way to find out.

Mulder: You're tired, Scully. You don't have to ...

Scully: (Taking his hand as she gets comfortable) I know I don't have to stay. (Looking into his eyes) Trust me. I want to stay.

Mulder: (Handing her some files and taking some as he gets comfortable) Thank you.

8:12 am
Apartment 42

Scully has curled up on the sofa asleep as Mulder continues to read.

Mulder: (Jumping) Omigod!

Scully: (Startled) What is it, Mulder? (Looking around in a daze) What time is it?

Mulder: (Shuffling the files on the table) Did you see the file marked OSFRT22739-4?

Scully: (Yawning) I haven't seen much of anything since about five-thirty. (Sitting up) What are you looking for?

Mulder: I told you. That file. (Still searching) Help me look.

Scully: What was the number again? (Helping him look) OSF ... RT... 22.

Mulder: 739-4. (Near panic) All of this time, he ...

A scared Hunter suddenly bursts into the room.

Hunter: Fox, what's wrong! (Frantically looking at both of them) Something's not right.

Mulder: (Calming down as he sees her) It's okay, Squirt. I just got a little excited. (Standing and heading her back toward the room) We promise to keep the noise to a minimum, so that you can rest.

Hunter: (Seeing the package and all of the files) You opened it! (Stopping) That's what I felt. (Looking up at Mulder) You shouldn't have opened it. Nothing good can come from it.

Mulder: (Bending over and picking her up) I think your medicine is wearing off. (Brushing her sweat-drenched hair away from her face) Why don't you go and wait for Trini in the bedroom. I'll turn on the tv and you can watch cartoons.

The two leave and Scully resumes looking for the file and suddenly finds it under her. She opens the file and starts to read.

Scully: (Distressed) Omigod! (Reading more) This can't be ...

Mulder: (Closing the door to the bedroom) We have to keep ourselves in control until Trini can get here with the psi dampeners. I gave her one of the sedatives they give her at the center, but I'm not sure if they offer any true shielding. (Sighing) Hunter's really upset, and I think the dampeners are the only thing keeping her somewhat functional. Trini's going to have a field day with this. (Noticing her distress) What is it?

Scully: Mulder, I found the file. (

Handing it to him) I think you should probably sit before you read it. Mulder: Okay. (Sitting and reading aloud) Personal Investigation Journal: William Mulder, 3 September 1960. After the preliminary tests, we have determined that the specimen samples can be used to cure certain physical ailments and deformities as well as to enhance mental acuities. With these results in hand, I have decided to partake in my own experiments, hence the personal heading. I have obtained a small sample and a more than willing volunteer in myself. I realize I am by no means a dedicated scientist, but I am willing to take the chances necessary for this endeavor. I am not sure I agree completely with my counterparts philosophy of using innocents to further our scientific knowledge, so I have decided to use the sample to help me with research on genetics and reproduction. (looking at Scully) What do you think?

Scully: Reproductive research? (Shocked) Mulder, ... you don't think ...

Mulder: (Running his hand through his hair) That Cancerman might have been telling the truth. (Shaking his head) Looks like my dad did authorize, if not wholeheartedly approve, the hybrid breeding. (Chagrined) What a legacy!

Scully: (Reading) Were you your parents first child living or dead?

Mulder: Two pregnancies - two births. (Sad grin) Could you see the world with any more of us? It would have been a disaster and Skinner would probably have no hair left. (Thinking) Why?

Scully: I don't think you're going to like this.

Mulder: Can't get any worse.

Scully: You say that now, but ... (Shaking her head and taking a deep breath) There's no easy way of saying this, so I'm just going to read it to you in your father's words. "3 December 1960 - Personal Medical Journal - I have finally completed the injections. As of yet, I have not noticed any results, but Elizabeth has commented on certain changes in my attitude. She has also been concerned with some of my physical reactions, but I have been able to cover those by using the excuse of latent allergies. If Elizabeth only knew what I was trying to do, I don't know if she would be overjoyed or overwrought. I can only hope my hypothesis will prove correct for that would go a lot further in justifying my actions than anything else. She has wanted a child for so long and I fear this is the only way I will be able to give it to her." (Pausing as she hears Mulder gasp) Do you want me to stop? (Seeing him shake his head) Okay. (Continuing) "I realize there are risks involved with this type of experimentation. Even if there is a child, there would be no guarantees that it would be carried to term or it would be born without birth defects or even if it would attain adulthood. All of these possibilities seem daunting, but the risks could be well worth it to see Elizabeth happy. I will continue to monitor myself and Elizabeth as often as possible for up to the next six months." (Looking up after reading some things) The next few pages detail your father's condition prior to the injections. (Reaching for his hand) Mulder, according to this file, your dad was irreversibly sterile.

Mulder: (Jumping up) That's impossible! I'm here and there was Samantha ... (Breathing heavily) If you're thinking my mom cheated, you're wrong. Up until Sam disappeared, she was hopelessly devoted to him, almost to the point where she thought he did no wrong. (Shaking his head as he paces) We were his, no doubt about it.

Scully: (Trying to calm him) Mulder, I'm not saying your mom cheated on your dad. (Holding up the file) According to this, your father injected himself over a span of twelve weeks with a mixture of hormones and diluted alien DNA in hopes of correcting his sterility. (Grabbing his hand and forcing him to focus on her words) According to this next entry, ... it worked.

Mulder stands like that for a few minutes as if trying to take in everything she's saying. He soon realizes the full impact and slowly sinks to the floor with the file in hand.

Mulder: (Reading) "22 January 1961 - Personal Medical Journal - I've done it! Two days ago, Elizabeth went to our doctor and her pregnancy was confirmed. I decided to perform a few tests on myself and have discovered that not only was I fully capable of fathering this child, but that I am also capable of producing many more. I almost don't want to believe this is happening, but the proof is there. Dr. Bellings assures us that the pregnancy is within normal requirements and he feels sure that no complications will arise. Elizabeth is healthy and happy; that's all that matters." (He pauses to wipe away the silent tears that have fallen and to skip several pages) "4th June 1961 - PMJ - "!" (Didn't want to name Cancerman, so that's him) visited me again today. I believe he suspects what I have done. He and our counterparts have been exerting more pressure on me to authorize the resumation of the PaperClip project. He made what almost sounded like a threat towards Elizabeth and the baby. To protect my family and to divert attention from what I have done, I feel I have no choice but to authorize its return." (Shuffling through more papers as Scully moves to sit with him) "14 October 1961 - PMJ - I HAVE A SON! He was born on 13 October at 11:21 pm, and we have given him the old family name of Fox William. It was always my belief there would never be anyone to give that name because of my sterility. I am glad I was proven wrong. Without alarming Elizabeth, I was able to draw some blood and run a few perfunctory tests. He's perfect and his Apgar of 9 confirms it! I am curious as to what his life will be like as he grows. I know things will be very different for him. That fact was driven home to me when Elizabeth noticed his eyes. They are not the eyes of a newborn or are they like anyone else's in the family: they are a deep hazel that turn a dark, almost unreal green when he cries. They also have an uncanny way of looking straight into your soul, as if seeing something buried deep and lurking. What exactly is this son of mine?" (Closing the folder and whispering) What am I, Dad? (Turning to his partner) What am I, Dana?

Scully quietly opens her arms and silently cries when Mulder collapses into them and his heart-wrenching sobs begin.

9:15 am
Apartment 42

Mulder is still in Scully's arms when a key can be heard in the lock. Neither notices when Dare opens the door and walks in.

Dare: (Shocked) What the hell is going on here?!

Mulder: (Slowly moving away from Scully) What the hell difference does it make to you and how the hell did you get into my house?

Dare: You gave Trini a key so that she could work with Hunter. (Slamming the door and moving further into the room) Trini couldn't make it so she asked me to bring over the meds and administer them. (Glaring at them) How was I supposed to know I'd be interrupting something?

Mulder: (Standing) You don't knock, (Shrugging) who knows what you might find?

Dare: (Ticked) What if Hunter had come in on your little ... scene? She's finally learning how to deal with all she's been through. (Extremely upset) If she found you like this, who knows how that would have set her back?

Mulder: I'm sure Hunter would have dealt with this a whole lot better than you, but, at least she would have a right to be upset. (Running his fingers through his hair) Besides, she had all evening to get used to the way we do things.

Scully: (Elbowing her partner) Not that there was anything to get used to. (Looking at Dare) This was nothing more than a friend comforting a friend.

Dare: That's not what it looked like from over here.

Mulder: (Yelling) Who cares what it looked like to you! (Walking up to her) The only thing you need to concern yourself with is a suitable treatment for Hunter. (Darkly) Your opinion about anything else doesn't matter.

Scully: Mulder! (Moving between the two) I think your emotions are too raw right now to deal with this appropriately. (Watching him try to get control) Why don't you go for your morning run to cool off while we take care of Hunter? (Rubbing his arm) Whadya say, partner?

Mulder: (Looking at both women) Yeah, that'd probably be better for the kid. (Heading for the door) Scully, (Nodding for her to join him which she does) just make sure she doesn't try to use her *influence* to upset Hunter.

Scully: (Watching him leave and slowly turning back to a shocked Dare) You know he didn't mean that.

Dare: Are you sure about that? (Shakily) You know as well as I do how brutally honest he is and he wouldn't have said it if he hadn't thought me capable of ... (Very emotional) I can't believe he would think I would do anything to harm that little girl, or any child for that matter.

Scully: He doesn't believe that. Not deep down anyway. (Walking to the other woman) He just received a shock not too long ago and that coupled with you coming in here with accusations flying made him want to lash out with whatever he could. (Pausing) If he didn't trust you, nothing I said would have made him leave this apartment.

Dare: I suppose you're right. But, what was so terrible that made him act like that? (Shaking her head) I mean, I know sometimes I do come off like a jealous wife or worse, Phoebe, but he knows I'm devoted to my husband. (Pausing) He usually just shrugs it off. (Needing answers) What set him on edge, Dana?

Scully: It's not really my place to tell you what upset him. (Hearing a noise in the other room) Why don't we concentrate on getting Hunter ready for today. Maybe by the time we're finished, he'll be back and ready to talk.

They stand and, after Dare grabs her bag, enter the bedroom. After almost twenty minutes have passed, a sweaty and disheveled Mulder returns.

Mulder: Anybody here? And still talking to me that is?

Dare: (Coming out of the room, closing the door and tossing him a towel) You're an ass, Mulder.

Mulder: I suppose I deserved that.

Dare: Actually, you deserved a lot worse. (pausing) You really hurt me when you questioned my professionalism. (Angrily) I have worked damn hard to get where I am, and I don't appreciate a so-called friend implying I would ever hurt a child. (Taking deep breaths) My objective when I first signed on was to help that little girl deal with whatever she's having to deal with and make sure she can handle the outside world without relying on the drugs so completely. (Glaring at him) That objective has not changed, and, since you brought me on in the first place, I expect you to grant me the respect I deserve. Do I make myself clear?

Mulder: (Saluting) Yes, Ma'am! (Sobering as she continues to glare at him) Okay. Okay. I admit I was wrong to aim my anger at you and I promise that from now on I'll try to reign it in. (Chagrined) For what it's worth, I regretted what I said five seconds after it left my mouth. (Touching her arm) Besides, you know if I didn't trust you, there is no way I would have left you here with my kid and the woman ... (Clearing his throat) my partner.

Dare: Dana said something like that. (Looking at him) I'm beginning to see another side to Agent Scully. (Shaking her head and smiling) She's something else. Even with how nasty I've always been to her, she still tried to comfort me. (Cunningly) You're a lucky man, Agent Mulder.

Mulder: (Grinning) I am indeed, Agent Axline.

Dana and Hunter suddenly appear at the bedroom door and Hunter launches herself at the man.

Hunter: Fox! (Leaping into his outstretched arms) Are you feeling better now?

Mulder: (Laughing as he kisses her) Lots, especially with you here. How are you?

Hunter: I'm okay. (Brushing his forelock) I'm glad you're better, 'cause I don't want you to take this the wrong way, (Scrunching her nose) but you smell really, really bad.

Mulder: Everybody's a critic. (Focusing on the little girl) Do you think you feel up to going to my and Scully's and Dare's job? (Looking at Dana) While I was out clearing my head, I thought of some things I needed to access at the office. (Putting Hunter down) So, I thought we could take the kid, set her up with some mags and work for a while. (Placing his hand on the girl's head) Very few people would be there, so we wouldn't have to worry about overloading the meds. (Asking his partner) Whadya think?

Scully: I don't see where there's a problem as long as Hunter agrees.

Mulder: What do you say, Baby-Girl? You want to see the big, bad Hoover building up close and personal?

Hunter: Okay, but I get to pick the magazines, Mr. M.F. Luder.

Mulder: (Sheepishly) Ha, ha.

Dare: Well, I think I'm going to take myself and my Harley home. I know a man and his Harley who are probably wondering where we are and what's taking so long. (Standing) I guess I'll see you guys tomorrow.

Mulder: (Walking over and kissing her on the cheek) Again, I'm sorry.

Dare: Don't worry about it, Tenor. (Walking to the door) But, just one more thing before I go ...

She looks at the other females and they all nod together.

Hunter, Dare, and Scully: (In unison) Take a shower, please!

10:27 am
Office of the X-Files

Mulder and Scully are engrossed in the computer while Hunter sits and reads.

Hunter: Guys, I hate to interrupt your power session, but I have to go to the restroom.

Scully: (Stretching) You're not interrupting anything. (Watching her partner yawn) The restroom down here is out, so you'll have to use the one on the first floor. Once you're off the elevator, head towards this end of the building. (Smiling at the little girl) You want me to go with you?

Hunter: (Testily) Heaven forbid and give Fox the opportunity to prove that women have to go to the restroom together! I don't think so. (Sighing) Besides, I am a woman of nine, and I have been capable of going to the W.C. alone for many years. It's a standard requirement for kids of my day.

Mulder: (Laughing) Okay, Madam. (Opening the door for her) Just make sure you come straight back without talking to anyone you don't know.

Hunter: (Rolling her eyes) Oh brother! Every parent's declaration raring its ugly head, "Don't talk to strangers." (Looking out from under her lowered eyelids) You do realize if I *had* listened to that, I wouldn't have had anything to do with you. (Leaving) They really don't get any stranger than you.

As Mulder closes the door, Hunter hears Scully laughing and stating the kid has a point. She quickly walks to the elevator and pushes the up button. When the elevator arrives, she walks in and peruses the vast numbers on the panel. Just as the doors close, she stands on her toes and punches a button.

Hunter: There must be a restroom on that floor. (Shrugging) I never said I was going to follow Dana's suggestion, so I'm perfectly within my rights to continue my search. (Hearing the chime ping as the door opens) Well, here goes nothing. (Stepping out of the and looking at the deserted area of the bullpen) This place is really creepy when no one's around. (She looks down one walkway and then the other, but keeps heading straight for the office door directly in front of her) I wonder what little adventures I'll find behind this door. (Reaching out and opening it) Doesn't anyone around here believe in locking things? I thought the I in the FBI stood for investigation, not incompetence. (Walking into the outer office) This is cool. A lot better than Fox and Dana's place. (Moving to the inner door) Since I've come this far, I might as well go all the way.

She pushes the door open and prepares to walk in when two strong arms come out of nowhere and grab her.

Hunter: (Screaming) Let me go or I'll send for my daddy and he'll blow you away!

WALTER Skinner: (Shocked and thrusting the child away) Who the hell are you and what are you doing here?

Hunter: You know it's bad form to use profanity in front of a child, especially one as young as myself.

Skinner: (Angrily) I repeat, who the hell are you and what are you doing sneaking around in my office?

Hunter: (Raising herself to her full height) I am Hunter Shelby Ianha Zachary and ... I was looking for a restroom.

Skinner: Zachary, huh? (Moving back to his chair) Well, Ms. Zachary, does this look like a restroom to you?

Hunter: I suppose I made a wrong turn somewhere, so, if you don't mind, I think I'll head back.

Skinner: (Watching her turn to leave) Just a minute. (Seeing her turn back warily) You're Mulder's goddaughter, aren't you? The one he's been watching since ... the ...

Hunter: Accident. (Sadly agreeing) Yes. (Cocking her head and looking at him) But how did you know about me? I know I'm not so important the Assistant Director of the F.B.I. would be familiar with me.

Skinner: (Surprised) You know who I am?

Hunter: (Disgusted) I can read, thank you very much. (Walking back to the hot seat and sitting) Since you know who I am, what else do you know about me, Walter Sergei Skinner?

Skinner: Enough not to be surprised you know my full name, though I would appreciate your not using it freely. (Glaring at her) Since you're here, I suppose Agent Mulder is around someplace. Does he know you're up here?

Hunter: (Nervous) Sure he does. I tell him everything.

Skinner: (Grinning) Then I guess you wouldn't have a problem with me calling him right now to come and get you. (Picking up the phone) I'm sure he's just dying to know what you found out for him.

Before he can start dialling, Hunter's eyes grow wide as she stares at the phone.

Hunter: I don't think that phone's working right now. (Watching as he lifts the handset to his ear) Besides, Fox would never spy on you - he trusts you.

Skinner: (Staring at the little girl as he lowers the dead phone) Oh really? Since when?

Hunter: (Walking over to his side of the desk) I don't know for how long, but I do know he trusts you almost as much as he trusts Dana. He just wishes you would do the same for him. (Moving his arms to climb in his lap) He really needs you to trust him. He needs it almost as much as I need to trust him, Dana, and (Snuggling closer) now you.

Skinner: (Shaking his head in amazement) Hunter, are you trying to manipulate me?

Hunter: (Sighing) You obviously didn't read my profile completely or you'd know I can't do that, DA.

11:58 am
J. Edgar Hoover Building

Mulder and Scully are in the elevator looking worried.

Mulder: I can't believe we lost track of time like this. It's been over an hour and we still haven't seen her.

Scully: Relax, Mulder. (Touching his arm) Dean said no one matching her description left the building, so we know she's still here. She probably wandered into someone's office and fell asleep.

Mulder: My head keeps telling me that but my heart is screaming I've lost her. (Running his fingers through his hair) I can't lose her, Scully.

Scully: (Watching the doors slide open) I know partner. I know. (Looking down the corridors) So, where do you want to start on this floor?

Mulder: Why don't we work our way from the AD's office out. I doubt if she would have fallen asleep in one of the cubicles and he does have a sofa.

They walk to the outer office and enter. Both look around for the child, and when they don't see her, Scully heads for the inner door. She pushes the door completely open and freezes at the sight.

Skinner: (Drawling sarcastically, but quietly, with a sleeping Hunter in his arms as he reads a file) Haven't you ever heard of knocking, Agent Scully?

Scully: (Normal voiced as Mulder freezes at the sight as well) Yes, sir. I ... uhm ... just wasn't expecting you to be here. I'm sorry, sir. I uh ...

Skinner: So does this mean you frequently barge into my office when you and your partner don't believe I'm here?

Scully: No, I mean, uh ...

Mulder: (Pushing past his partner to get to Hunter) Is she all right? (Reaching for her) I was worried that ...

Skinner: (Moving the little girl away from Mulder) Would you calm down and talk softly? (Not raising the tone of his voice) She's perfectly fine; just sleeping.

Scully: (Moving further into the room and finding her voice) We thought that might be the case, but we ... uh ... thought she would have found a sofa.

Skinner: (Smiling down at Hunter) She is pretty resourceful and I suppose she found my lap as comfortable as any sofa. (Losing the smile as he looks at his agents) In a way, it's good she brought you here. I need to talk to you about something that came across my desk on yesterday. (Pushing the file toward them and shifting the child) What exactly do you know about the accident that took Hunter's parents, Agent Mulder?

Mulder: (Sitting as he looks over the file) Not much just that it looks like Sevh lost control and slammed into the bridge setting off the explosion. (Disbelieving what he's reading) Is this for real?

Skinner: I'm afraid so. (At Scully's confused look) An eyewitness has come forward and stated the Zacharys were not in control of their vehicle when it hit the bridge. (Being careful not to wake the child) The witness claims several MIBs were seen driving them, unconscious, to the site and, well ... You get the picture. (Pausing) That coupled with the fact that Himmot's bridge was the only one in a 125 mile radius of their home with construction explosives on-site has caused the investigation to be reopened.

Mulder: (Standing and pacing) If what you're saying is true, they were murdered. (Trying to maintain control) My oldest friends, murdered. (Thinking) Why would someone target them? They really only had each other and Hunter. (Angrily) They just wanted to protect their child. (Turning to his boss) Why them, Skinner?

Skinner: (Checking Hunter again) Agent Mulder, I did not tell you about this so you could direct your paranoia at me. I informed you of this so you could prepare for the investigation that will follow. (Stopping the other man before he can speak) And before you ask, no, you cannot be in charge of this investigation. It's obvious you are too emotionally involved and you should be focusing all of your attention on helping Hunter get through this. (Gently pushing the hair off of the child's face) There are going to be questions only she can answer since she was at the house.

Scully: Is that really necessary, Sir? I mean, considering she refuses to discuss what happened to the point where even Agent Axline has been unable to access any information concerning the week preceeding the incident. I doubt an outside investigator would be able to break through when someone the child trusts hasn't.

Skinner: (Sighing) I realize the difficulty surrounding this situation, but my hands are tied as far as the investigation is concerned. I was hoping you, Agent Mulder, and Agent Axline could be with Hunter as she is interviewed to provide whatever support she needs. (Eying them both) Who knows? She might finally open up with all of you there. It certainly couldn't hurt.

Mulder: I suppose. (Looking at Skinner) If there's nothing else, we should probably be getting out of your way. (Reaching for Hunter) Thanks for watching her for me. (Seeing the little girl awaken as he places her in his arms) Hi there, Sleeping Beauty, did you have pleasant dreams?

Hunter: (Yawning) I don't dream anymore. (Sleepily as she remembers where she is) Am I in trouble, Fox? DA said it was okay to stay with him.

Scully: (Looking at the Assistant Director curiously) Da?

Skinner: (Sheepishly) She inverted the letters of my job title because she says it's silly to address me by a title that doesn't apply to her. (Shrugging) What was I supposed to say? (Pausing) No?

Mulder: I guess not. (Waiting for Scully to get the door) Well, see you Monday, Sir.

Hunter: (Waving sleepily) Bye, DA.

They leave. Scully notices that Mulder is moving slower and is almost clutching Hunter to him.

Scully: (Reaching for the elevator button) Are you okay, Mulder?

Mulder: (Looking tortured) I just keep thinking they say trouble and bad things come in threes. (Shaking his head) I just don't know if I can handle one more thing.

8:30 am
Apartment 42

Mulder has been up all night reading his father's files and making notes. He looks extremely tense and haunted. Someone knocks at the door.

Mulder: (Stretching and moving to it) Who is it?

Scully: (Muffled) Elvis.

Mulder: (Opening the door with a half-hearted smile) Talk about a cruel and insidious plot. The King has been transformed into a Queen. (Shrugging as she comes in) Guess this explains his wardrobe.

Scully: (Turning to really look at him) Mulder, you look like ... (Glancing around) Before I finish that statement, where's Hunter?

Mulder: Still sleeping as far as I know. (Sitting down) I haven't gotten the usual zap I get when she returns to consciousness, so it's a safe bet she's still in dreamland. (Hitting his head) Oh, I forgot. My kid no longer dreams; only has nightmares. Go figure after what she's been through and seen. (Staring painfully at Scully) Makes her more my kid than blood, huh?

Scully: (Sitting beside him and feeling his forehead) When was the last time you slept? (Moving to take his pulse) You look like death.

Mulder: (Leaning back) I love you too, Scully.

Scully: I'm serious, Mulder. You can't just shut down like you used to. I know all of this has been hard for you, but you have a greater responsibility and committment to Hunter now.

Mulder: How can I be anything to her, or you for that matter, if I don't know who, or more appropriately what, I am.

Scully: (Angrily) In all the time I've known you, I have never had cause to think of you as anything other than what you are: a wonderful human being with a soft heart and head, an obsessive personality, and a loyalty that won't quit. (Taking a deep breath) I have read nothing that has made me question that and I don't think you have either.

Mulder: (Digesting what she said) Dare was right. You are something else and I'm pretty lucky to be working with you.

Scully: (Taken aback) Dare said that? (Shaking her head) Will wonders never cease?

Someone knocks and then a key can be heard turning and the door opening.

Mulder: Sounds like the wonder now. (Aside to Scully) Remind me to get that key back. (Seeing his friend as she walks over to them) Good morning, Mary Sunshine.

Dare: Good morning to you. (Really looking at him) I hope Hunter's looking better than you or else our session is going to be totally wasted.

Mulder: (Grimacing) She's awake now, though I can't tell you exactly how she's feeling. (Rubbing his temples) I'm really going to have to get Trini to teach her how not to do that whenever she wakes.

Scully: It's probably compounded by the fact that you've had almost no sleep for the last two days. (Turning to the woman) Hello, Dare. (Nodding towards the door) Great improvement.

Dare: (Beaming) I was so proud of myself when I fought the urge to barge right in and instead, knocked.

Mulder: You'll probably pee in your pants when you actually learn to wait for the, "Come in." (Dare punches him) Ouch! (Glaring at her) That's going to leave a bruise. (Looking at his watch) I didn't realize it was this late! I'm supposed to meet Jonathon for breakfast at 9:30. I have just enough time for a quick shower. Care to join me, Scully?

Scully: (Rolling her eyes) Only if you're going to transform into David Duchovny.

Mulder: I'm hurt. (Walking to the bedroom door) I know you're awake in there; I just hope you're decent cause I'm coming through!

He enters and cheery voices can be heard arguing back and forth until the shower starts. Dare and Scully move to the kitchen area.

Scully: (Looking for cups) Are you going to do your session here or take Hunter to your office?

Dare: (Finding the coffee) Since Mulder borrowed a lot of the materials I keep at the Center, I should be able to do everything here.

Scully: Do you mind if I watch? (Fixing coffee for both of them) I think it might help me deal better with Hunter, especially if Mulder's serious about trying to adopt her.

Dare: (Shrugging) It might help. (Hearing a knock at the front door) Was Jonathon supposed to meet Mulder here?

Scully: (Walking to the door) Not that I know of. (Looking out the peephole and calling to the person on the other side) Yes?

McNeary: I'm Agent McNeary. I'm conducting the investigation into the Zachary incident.

Scully: (Opening the door a fraction) Could I see some ID? (Checking the badge through the crack) Okay. (Opening the door to let her in) We weren't expecting anyone this soon. Skinner only told us about the investigation being reopened yesterday.

McNeary: I think they're really pushing this through because Mr. Zachary's father was a bigwig in the government at one time. (Shrugging) You know: positive publicity. Showing how we watch over our own and all that. (Looking at the other women) Skinner told me to expect (Pointing to each) Agent Dana Scully and Agent Dare Axline.

Dare: Good call. (Shaking the woman's hand) What area do you work in?

McNeary: Actually, I move around in both of my areas of interests: violent crimes and domestic terrorism. This is my first case to encompass both.

Scully: Domestic terrorism? (Puzzled) What does this case have to do with that? From what I understand, Dr. Zachary was a researcher for a pharmaceutical company.

McNeary: He was. Some questions have arisen concerning his research and its connection to biological warfare.

She is interrupted by the arrival of a refreshed Mulder and a dressed Hunter laughing and tickling each other as they enter the room.

Mulder: (Sobering and instantly alert when he notices the new presence) Hello.

Scully: (Walking to him) Mulder, this is Agent McNeary. She's conducting the investigation and she needs to talk to Hunter.

Hunter: (Looking up at the adults) Why? What do I know about some stupid investigation?

Dare: (Moving to the little girl and guiding her to the sofa) Hunter, there have been some questions raised about your parents' deaths. (Seeing the look of fear cross the child's face and soothing her) They're just trying to find out what caused it. Nobody's trying to hurt you.

Hunter: But why do they want to question me? (Teary) I wasn't with them.

Mulder: (Kneeling in front of her) They just want to make sure everything was covered the first time and they didn't miss anything. (Caressing her head) We know you don't want to remember a lot of what happened that week, but if you could, even if it was just a little, we might be able to ....

Dare: (Interrupting him) There's no pressure on you to remember anything you don't feel comfortable doing so. Okay?

Hunter: (Thinking) Okay. (Looking over to the other woman) Hello.

McNeary: (Smiling as she walks over to the others) Hi, Hunter. My name's Patricia and I understand how nervous you must be because I have a little girl just about your age. I promise I won't cover anything you don't want.

Hunter: (Wide-eyed) Fox says I need to talk about it, so I can feel better and my nightmares can go away. (Sadly) If I tell you what I know, will you get the people who hurt my Mommy and Daddy?

McNeary: I will do everything in my power to do my job. (Talking to the adults) Is there something we need to do to make this easier on her?

Dare: (Standing and moving to her bag) I'm going to layer some of her meds. (Perusing the medicines) I'll give her a half a dose of the psi dampeners to make sure that doesn't hinder anything. (Turning to Mulder) Does she have a crib here just in case?

Mulder: No, I just ordered one last week and I've been hoping we wouldn't need it. (Looking at his partner) Scully's looked over her file and could probably keep her going until you reached a hospital, right?

Scully: I'm sure I could. (Glancing at the clock) Mulder, you've got fifteen minutes to get there and unless you really hurry ...

Mulder: Man! See ya later, Squirt. (Bending over to kiss Hunter as he hurries to leave) Scully, could you come here? (Waiting until she has followed him out the door and it's been closed behind them) Do me a favor? Watch McNeary. (Shrugging) Call me paranoid but there's something that doesn't feel right about her.

Scully: Okay. (Watching him run) Tell Jonathon I said hi and I send my love to him and Grey. (Re-entering the apartment and seeing Dare putting the bandage on Hunter's arm) That was fast.

Dare: (Discarding the needle and her gloves) I told you I was only giving her half a dose and that doesn't take hardly any time. (Turning back to McNeary and Hunter) You guys are all set.

McNeary: Thanks. (Smiling at the little girl as Scully and Dare settle on either side of her) Hunter, I want you to tell me everything you remember about the week leading up to the accident and the day of the accident.

Hunter: (Quietly) All right.

She slowly begins speaking. During the rough spots Scully and Dare comfort her, but as she talks and answers questions, it is plain to see the events described in the beginning involved her and her parents. She is in tears when she finally finishes and Scully is searching for a kleenex.

McNeary: (Offering comfort) You did really well. (Looking down at her notes) This information is going to help a lot. (Reaching over to caress the child's face) You're a very brave little girl. (Seeing Hunter jerk away as a line of blood appears on her face) Oh, I'm sorry. My ring it must have ... (Obviously agitated) I didn't mean to scratch you.

Scully: (Checking out the wound) It's nothing, just a little scratch. Don't worry about it.

McNeary: I just feel so bad. I was only trying to comfort her the way I do with my daughter and I didn't realize my ring was twisted around.

Dare: (Dabbing the cut with the tissue) It's no big deal. (Turning Hunter's head) See, it's not even bleeding anymore. (Tapping the child's nose) Whadya say, Hunter? Is it life-threatening?

Hunter: (Grinning) Not hardly. (Laughing) It'd take a whole lot more than some silly scratch to bring Hunter Zachary down.

McNeary: Glad to hear it. (Picking up her things) Well, I need to get this stuff home to analyze it. This coupled with the eyewitness account should lead us in the proper direction. (Looking at the others and smiling) Thanks for your cooperation. (Leaving) This was so much easier with your help.

Scully: (Going into the the bathroom and bringing back some antiseptic) Let's get this cleaned up and maybe we can go get some food. (She works quickly) How's that?

Hunter: Better. (Yawning) Can I skip going out? I'm feeling a little sleepy.

Dare: You've had a pretty big morning, so that's understandable. (Nodding at Dana) I'll tell you what. Why don't Dana and I order something while you take a nap?

Hunter: Okay. (Standing and heading towards the bedroom) Don't forget to wake me when it comes.

Scully: We won't. (Hearing the door close and turning back to Dare) That was intense. No wonder she's tired. I wasn't involved and I'm drained.

Dare: Tell me about it. (Shaking her head) I knew she was hiding something major in her life, but I never thought it was as bad as that. (Thinking) Oh no.

Scully: What?

Dare: I was just thinking over what she said and I realized Hunter confirmed her parents' murders.

Scully: (Having the same thought) Oh God! (Clearly upset) What is this going to do to Mulder?

11:30 am
Child Protection Services

Mulder and another man enter a comfortable and homey office. The man is slightly taller than Mulder and he has a nice build and blonde hair.

Mulder: (Shaking his head as they both sit) Next time I offer to buy remind me of your high metabolism and your ability to scarf down enough to feed the Knicks.

Jonathon Hargrove: (Laughing) Is it my fault my appetite increases proportionately to the amount of money a friend is willing to spend? (Arching his eyebrow) And, from what I understand, you're probably willing to fork over a few more lunches and dinners.

Mulder: Guess that means it's a good thing I haven't touched my inheritance. (Leaning forward) If you can give me some good news on my petition, I'll feed you and Grey for life.

Jonathon: (Sobering) I wish it were so easy. (Shuffling the papers in front of him) We've been friends forever and if I was in any other position, I could wholeheartedly approve you for any number of things. (Sighing) But, looking over your application, I see so many areas that would cause problems with your petition.

Mulder: What kind of problems? (Raking his fingers through his hair) I'm not saying I'm a saint, but I'm not a serial killer either.

Jonathon: Don't knock serial killers. They are often considered the best people until they're found with a head in the freezer. (Chagrined) One of them would stand a better chance of getting her than you as things stand right now. (Showing him one of the papers) Look at where you live. It's okay for a bachelor F.B.I. agent - most definitely not appropriate for a nine-year-old girl. (Pointing) Not to mention you only have one bedroom and bath.

Mulder: So, I'll move.

Jonathon: That isn't all. (Pausing) Your job puts you at risk constantly. According to my prelim check, you've been in and out of the hospital more times in the last three years than most of the doctors on staff. (Reading) You and Dana have to be able to drop whatever you're doing at a moment's notice and then you end up flying halfway across the country. We can't even use a wife to fall back on since you're not married or with any immediate prospects. (Looking at his friend) For God's sake, F.M., you can't even keep fish alive. How do you expect to do better with a kid, especially a special needs one?

Mulder: I'd do it for Hunter. (Looking out the window) I already think of her as mine, Jon. She needs me and I need her. (Turning back and taking a deep breath) Bottom line, what do I have to do to keep her?

Jonathon: Honestly. (Seeing his nod) Grey and I, as a gay, monogamous couple, have a better chance of adopting her, but I'm willing to discuss some options with you. (Pausing) Two things are going for you: the parents did knowingly make you her guardian *and* your first move after taking her in was to get her help at the Center. (Pulling some paperwork out of his desk) Do you think someone high up, maybe from your job, might vouch for you? That could go a long way in swaying the panel and the judge.

Mulder: Are you kidding? (Pausing) Half the bureau thinks I'm strange and the other half are scared I'm going to uncover what they don't want uncovered. (Rolling his eyes) With it being an election year, most of the politicians I know would probably deny knowing me because of possible negative feedback and retaliation.

Jonathon: (Holding up his hand) Stop right there. I definitely did not need to hear any of that last part if I'm going to help you with this petition. (Sighing) From this point on, don't volunteer any information that is not asked for specifically. (Pausing for effect) I'm sure you're familiar with the policy, "Don't ask; don't tell."

12:28 pm
Apartment 42

Scully: (Arranging the delivery on the table) Why don't you go awaken the princess? I'm sure she's starving having missed breakfast.

Dare: She's not the only one. (Going to the bedroom door and knocking) Up and at 'em, Hunter. (No response) Hunter, the food's here. (Looking back at Scully at the continued silence) I guess I'm going to have to go play prince to her sleeping princess.

She enters the room and Scully continues to set the table.

Scully: (Yelling) Come on, guys. I'm hungry, too.

Dare: (Calling out from the other room) Dana, get in here!

Scully drops what she's doing and rushes into the other room. Dare is trying to awaken the child without results.

Dare: I can't wake her! (Shaking the still child) Hunter! If you're playing, this isn't funny. (Frantic) Hunter!

Scully: (Moving to the other side) Hunter. (Checking her pulse) Hunter, can you hear me? (Caressing her face) If you can hear me, I want you to moan or do something to let us know. (No response) Hunter! (Examining her) Oh, God, no.

Dare: What is it?

Scully: (Turning the child's face to show the scar) The scratch, it's exhibiting signs of severe infection that it shouldn't. (Stricken) I think she's been poisoned. (Getting control) Dare, I need you to call Georgetown Emergency - their number is speed-dialed under 3. (Gathering the covered Hunter in her arms) Tell them we're bringing in a nine-year-old, Mulatto female exhibiting coma-like symptoms associated with a possible non-chemical poisoning. (Lifting the child) Tell them our E.T.A. is about twenty-five to forty minutes. (Heading out of the apartment) Grab my purse and I'll wait for you in the car.

As Scully leaves carrying Hunter, Dare quickly calls the hospital, relays the information and follows.

2:00 pm
Waiting area of Georgetown Medical Center

Dare is sitting, staring at her hands almost as if in shock. Scully is pacing the whole area like a caged animal. She stops when she sees the doctor.

Scully: (Walking towards her) How is she?

Doctor: (Shaking her head) I wish I had something positive to tell you, but this has us stumped. (Opening the medical chart) When you first brought her in, I would have bet money you were mistaken concerning your suspicions. She was exhibiting classic symptoms of meningitis, but, unless this is a strain no one has ever seen, it's not responding to any of our treatments. (Looking back at them) Not only that, as unbelievable as it may seem, it looks like it's mutating and attacking parts of her brain.

Dare: But you're not giving up, right? You are going to keep trying things.

Doctor: Of course. (Pausing) I was just wanting to let you know the situation, just in case ...

Scully: (Nodding as she interrupts) Thank you, Doctor. (Watching as the woman leaves and turning back to Dare) It's hard to believe just a few hours ago, we were talking to her and now she's ... (Wiping her eyes) I know I need to call Mulder. He's probably worried sick that something's happened and ... (Looking lost) Wait, I guess something *has* happened.

Dare: (Shakily) Do you need me to call him and Trini? (Voice breaking) I can do it if you need me to.

Scully: (Shaking her head) No. (Pausing) This is something *I* really need to do. (Reaching into her pocket and pulling out her cellular and pushing the speed dial) I hope he has his on. (Listening) Mulder, it's me. (Getting control) I'm fine, Mulder. It's .... (Taking a deep breath) It's Hunter, uhmmm ... we're at Georgetown Medical and they don't know ... Mulder? (Listening) Mulder, are you there? (Not getting a response and closing the phone) I think that means he's on his way.

2:35 pm
Same area as before

Mulder: (Running over to a waiting Scully) Where is she? (Grabbing her) Where is she?

Scully: Mulder, calm down.

Mulder: Don't tell me to calm down! (Releasing her and turning as if searching) Where is my daughter?

Dare: (Trying to soothe him) They're transferring her to the Pediatric ICU. (Looking around) The doctor promised she'd send someone to us once they had her settled.

Mulder: (Nodding) Fine. (Running his fingers through his already disheveled hair) Then, will someone please tell me what happened? She was fine when I left and ... now this. (Exasperated) Something doesn't add up.

Scully: I know. (Focusing) We think some type of virus was introduced into her bloodstream.

Mulder: (Confused) How could someone inject her with whatever with you two around?

Scully: We don't think she was *injected* with anything. (At his puzzled frown) We think the virus was implanted through a scratch on her face.

Mulder: Where the hell did she get a scratch like that?

Scully: (Shakily) I'm sorry, Mulder. (Clearing her throat) It looks like you were right in suspecting Agent McNeary. After Hunter finished telling us what happened, McNeary seemed to be trying to comfort her when she scratched her with her ring. (Tucking her hair behind her ear) It all seemed so harmless, and yet ...

Mulder: It wasn't your fault, either of you. (Turning away) I should have followed up on my feelings and cancelled my meeting.

Dare: I doubt if that would have helped. From what I remember, she was prepared to fight to get to Hunter. (Chagrined) She even had the nerve to thank us for making it easier for her. (Disgusted) God, I hope I never run into her again because if I do, she's dead.

Doctor: (Walking up) She's settled. (Holding out her hand) You must be Agent Mulder. I'm Doctor Packary. (Pausing) Have the ladies filled you in how things stand?

Scully: We really haven't had the chance.

Doctor: That's understandable. (Looking at Mulder intensely) Hunter is experiencing the symptoms attributed to an unknown viral agent. (Pausing) The agent is in various stages of mutation and as each part changes, it goes and attacks a section of her brain.

Mulder: (Nearly collapsing as Dare and Scully move to support him) Oh God.

Doctor: (Pulling a chair to him and watching him sit) I can assure you we have some of the greatest pediatricians working on this and I feel certain we will get to the bottom of this. (Looking at the chart) If you're ready to see her, she's in PICU1003. (Pausing) I have to warn you. She is currently being kept stable by way of a lot of technology. That means there are going to seem like an inordinate number of tubes and wires for such a little girl, but it is necessary. (Pausing) I usually assign an RN to go in with the parents the first time they see their sick child just so he/she can allay their fears and explain what everything is. (Nodding at Scully) I assume you won't be needing this, correct Dr. Scully?

Scully: (Agreeing) That's correct. (Watching Mulder) Thanks again, Doctor.

Doctor: No problem. (Turning to leave) We'll keep you informed of any new developments.

As she leaves, Mulder's cellular rings.

Mulder: (Removing it from his pocket) Mulder. (Listening) What? (Taking a deep breath) Tell Skinner I'll be right there.

Scully: (Concerned) What's wrong?

Mulder: (Shaking his head) When it rains, it pours. Seems like with all of us up here, someone decided to break into my apartment. Skinner wants me down there to see what's missing. (Looking directly at Scully) Five will get you ten, we can guess without even looking.

Scully: (Stopping him) Why don't you let me go and you stay here. If the files are gone, there's not much you can do about it.

Mulder: I know, but ... at least I'll feel like I'm doing something and not leaving things to fate. (Turning to Dare) Watch her for me.

Dare: (Taking his hand) You know I will.

3:39 pm
Apartment 42

Skinner is walking around the destroyed apartment when Mulder and Scully walk in.

Mulder: (To his partner) Remind me to pay the maid next time. (Moving to his boss) Who phoned it in?

Skinner: Your downstairs neighbors, ... (Reading his notes) a Miss Monica Harvey and a Ms. Sammi Moch. At first they thought it was your "usual visitation activity," but then they realized your place was actually being trashed.

Mulder: (Turning red) Sammi *and* Monica? (Explaining) They were the last two people in the whole building willing to take packages for me when I'm out of town. They even invited me over for dinner a couple of times. (Scratching his head) Somehow, I had convinced them my line of work wasn't as dangerous as it seemed. (Shaking his head) Now, I'll be lucky if they ever speak to me again. (Looking around) Hunter was even warming up to them. (Moving away to search through the mess)

Skinner: Speaking of ... How is she? (Pausing) I was on my way to see her when I heard the call and headed here.

Scully: (Solemnly) The doctors are doing everything they can for her, but they don't know what exactly they're dealing with.

Skinner: (Watching Mulder) How's he taking it?

Scully: (Also watching) Not well. (Turning back to her boss) He's been carrying a heavy load lately with Sevh and Sherron's deaths, getting Hunter, and finding out about his ... (Catching herself) I know for a fact he hasn't slept for at least the last forty eight hours and he's pretty drained. (Pausing) He spent the whole morning being told a serial killer stood a better chance of adopting Hunter and now he's worried sick he may not get a chance to even try because she probably won't last through the week. (Seeing Mulder pick up Hunter's doll and cradle it) He almost collapsed at the hospital when we told him her condition and then he received the call to come here. (Sighing) Life is not fair.

Skinner: What can I do to help you? (At her look) Neither of you look like strong Bureau material right now and it is a part of my job description to offer support and assistance to my agents whenever I can. (Pausing) So, what can I do?

Scully: First, you can pray. (Thinking) Then, you can find Agent McNeary before any of us do because I have a feeling none of us would be accountable for our actions.

Skinner: (With murderous intent) Consider it done. (Eying Mulder as he returns) Well, can you tell if anything's missing?

Mulder: (Mostly to his partner) Just like I said - all gone, including my notes.

Skinner: (Confused) What's gone? (Catching the look between them) Look, Mulder, if this has anything to do with the X-Files or the Bureau, I have a right to be informed.

Scully: It's not official business, sir.

Skinner: (Sighing) Then as someone who has stuck his butt out for you on more than one occasion, I think I deserve the unofficial story.

Mulder: (Staring as if seeing into the other man's soul) As much as I really hate to admit it, you're right. You have earned the right to hear this. (Sighing) I hope you have time because this is probably going to take a while.

Skinner: I have all the time you'll need, but, unless, you're taking that doll to Hunter, you might not want to be seen carrying it around in public.

Mulder: (Confused until he realizes he's still holding the doll) I almost forgot I had it. (Starting to undress it)

Scully: (Shocked) Mulder!

Mulder: (Removing a data tape) What? (Smiling at the device) They think they got everything but they didn't. (Seeing Scully's confused expression) I found that mixed in with the files. It seems to be a more recent addition. I was going to to stop by here and then run it by TLG headquarters, but you called ... (Remembering and blanching) Maybe we should get back to the hospital.

Scully: (Understanding as she touches his arm) If anything had changed, Dare would have called. (Speaking to Skinner) We're heading back - care to join us?

Skinner: No, I need to check on a few things before I head over. (Smiling as he leaves) I bet by the time I get there, she'll be sitting up cracking jokes as if nothing happened.

Mulder: (Under his breath) If there's any justice, she will.

7:18 pm
Pediatric I.C.U.
Georgetown Medical Center

Mulder is sitting in the darkened room staring at the hardware dwarfing the still, little girl.

Mulder: (Reaching for her hand) They keep telling me they're working to save you, but I hear them asking Scully if any "plans" have been made. (Bleakly) What if I don't want to make any plans, Hunter? Not those kind anyway. (Looking around the room) I've spent too many hours in places like this lately. (Bringing her hand to his cheek) Talk to me, Squirt. Help me plan your next birthday, our first Christmas - something! (Laying his head on the bed)

A light flickers in the room and Mulder ignores it like he would a nurse or doctor entering the room. But, when the light seems to focus on Hunter, he looks up and gasps as he sees the woman from the beginning.

Sherron: (Smiling) What's wrong, Fox? (Chuckling) You, of all people, shouldn't be looking like you've seen a ghost.

Mulder: Is that what you are?

Sherron: Would you believe we prefer disembodied entity? How about corporeally challenged? (Laughing) If you could see your face; I always could get a reaction from you. (Sobering as she looks at her child) What happened, Fox?

Mulder: You mean you don't know? (At her confused look) I always assumed that ... that those on the other side were aware of things here.

Sherron: (Shaking her head) Only when it's our jobs to know. (Caressing Hunter's face) I just learned of this a short time ago. (Pausing) She is so frail. (Looking at the man) She's so very much like you.

Mulder: God, I hope not.

Sherron: Why? (At his puzzled look) Why don't you think of yourself as just as much an innocent victim as Hunter? It can't be because of some silly experiments a few misguided men performed. (Shaking her head) Oh, no. You were considering yourself unworthy for a long time before those files turned up.

Mulder: (Surprised) You know about the files?

Sherron: I told you, I know what's my job to know. (Smiling) You know how you comforted Hunter when she first came to you. (Pausing) Even though you suspected she knew something, you allowed her to come to terms with it without ever pressuring her. Then you told her over and over again how it wasn't her fault - that she couldn't be blamed for something out of her control. You told her no child could be expected to do more than an adult in a situation, no matter what the gifts involved. (Pausing) What makes you so different? (Knowingly) Guilt can be so easy to take on but it's almost impossible to take off, especially when it's a situation we don't understand. (Looking back at her child) No, you're as much a victim in this as Hunter.

Mulder: I wish I could come up with a snappy line about death making you deep, but you always did have a knack for cutting to the heart of things. (Sighing) I guess I know where Hunter got her stuff from.

Sherron: Even though I did have a few skills up my sleeve, she received everything from her Daddy. (Looking off for a moment) I think I've over-extended my leave. (Smiling again) You want answers? (Nodding at him) Look to yourself - you haven't changed. You're no more different than Hunter in a lot of ways, mainly the important ones. (Cocking her head and listening to something) Sevh sends his love and says to remember the Oxford days.

Mulder: (Scared) You're not going to take Hunter, are you?

Sherron: Why should I? (Understanding) You still don't get it, do you? (Watching him) I wasn't here for her - I was here for you.

She vanishes and Mulder awakens and stands as if in a daze. After a quick look at Hunter to make sure she's all right, he quickly exits the room and heads into the waiting area where he finds Dare, Kirk, Skinner and Keemo talking.

Mulder: Where's Trini and Scully?

Skinner: They went to get coffee for everybody. Why?

Mulder: (Slumping into a seat) You wouldn't believe me if I told you.

Meanwhile, entering an elevator on a lower floor with their hands full of coffee and sandwiches, Scully and Trini head back to the waiting area.

Trini: Sorry we haven't been here from the beginning. (Tiredly) Keemo and I have had a trying few days. (Catching Scully's look) I'm pregnant and Keemo's mother doesn't want an heir to the Antanaka fortune to have as diverse a background as I would bring to our child. (Taking a deep breath) We've been flying all over creation talking to one influential family member after another trying to get them to approve our marriage.

Scully: What difference does that make? No one else should have a say in your future.

Trini: I wish it were that easy. (Sighing) Keemo's family relies heavily on its Japanese heritage and traditions especially where business is concerned. They are firm believers in the theory of lost confidence and the removal of individuals from their positions if this happens. (Disgusted) His mother is very influential and unless we could bring over as many company elders to our side, Keemo would have lost his authority over the family's holdings - which, by the way, he has increased considerably since he took on the position. (Sighing as they exit the elevator) We won, but only after we showed them how much they could lose without him in the head chair. (Eyes sparkling with devilment) Of course, now Mama-san has to sit in her revered place of honor at our wedding having lost face and with the knowledge she can never question my place and I'm going to enjoy every minute of it. (Winking at Scully) Does that make me evil?

Scully: (Laughing) No, just human. And congratulations on all of your good news. (Looking in through the side glass) Who's that with Dare?

Trini: (Sneaking a peek) I'm not sure, but he does look familiar. (Looking at the cups) Good thing we brought extras. It seems we'll need them for the new arrivals. (Glancing at the other occupant) Mul's in there and ... Hold the phone!

Scully: What?

Trini: I just picked up on why our new visitor looks so familiar. He could almost be Mul's twin and that could only mean he is the ever-absent Mr. Kirk Ansel. There were rumours that he was actually a fictional character created to throw the gossip-mongers off track where Mul and Dare were concerned. (Shaking her head) Guess this blows that. (Snorting) There goes fifty bucks down the drain on that theory. (Realizing Scully has no idea what she was talking about) That's Dare's husband and Mul's third cousin.

Scully: (Taking a second look) Omigod! They do look alike. (Chuckling) Oh, my. This does explain why Dare's so happy at home. (Catching Trini's look as she pushes the door open) Don't act like you weren't thinking the same thing! (To the others) Refreshments are here.

Mulder: (Standing and moving to the women) Can you give those to someone else. I need to talk to both of you. (Handing the trays to the others and ushering the ladies outside) You won't ever guess who I saw in Hunter's room.

Trini: The Energizer Bunny!

Scully: (Poking the other woman) Seriously. (Thinking) Not Cancerman?

Mulder: Would you believe Sherron?

Trini: Only if I knew you were on hallucinogens. (Rationally) She's dead and you were probably having delusions from lack of sleep.

Mulder: I won't deny I'm tired, but I know myself well enough to know the difference between delirium and a supernatural event. (With emphasis) This was real and I think she was trying to tell me something.

Scully: (Skeptical but wanting to believe in him) Something to help Hunter?

Mulder: I'm not sure, but since she wasn't there to take her, I'm optimistic. (Including both of them) I'm going to need you to access some medical files and to help me sort through the data once we crack the tape. (To Trini) Sherron made a point of telling me to remember our Oxford days. I think she was telling me the key to getting to the files. We're going to have to work together to remember anything from that time that might have been used as a password.

Trini: What data from what files and why do you need medical files?

Mulder: I suppose while we're waiting, I'll have to tell you a little story. And boy is it a doozy!

Scully: We've got something to tell you as well. (At his confused look) Skinner informed us when he arrived that Agent McNeary's body had been found. It seems she was the victim of an alleged carjacking. (Sarcastically) Funny thing is, the body found, that of the real Agent Patricia McNeary, was a thirty-seven year old African American woman who by no means met the description of the woman who interviewed Hunter. (Securely) Skinner's ordered protection with instructions to stop her at any cost. (Inclining her head) Welcome to the big leagues.

Mulder: Batter up. 10:30 pm
Office of the X-Files

Trini is sitting in front of the computer while Mulder paces as he talks on the phone.

Mulder: Okay, guys, try rugby. (Listening) Damn! I thought he might have remembered I played on the team.

Trini: Science and Sherron were the only things on his mind at the time. (Scratching something out on a notebook) Let's see. We've tried our halls, our professors, your roommates, the animals, the mascots, your sports and our favorite hang-outs. (Looking back at him) About the only thing we haven't tried are your old girlfriends and ... (Her eyes widening) You don't think he would have ... Noooo.

Mulder: You know his sense of humor. (Into the phone) Guys, try Phoebe. (Listening) Yes! That son of a so-and-so. (Looking up) You are some piece of work. Or, considering your password, (Looking down) maybe I should be addressing you in a different location. (Listening) Okay. Yeah, we're all set up to receive on this end. (Nodding) Okay. I'll let you know. Thanks. (Moving to Trini) They're going to transmit the file over a secured channel in about five minutes. (Shaking his head in disbelief) I knew Sherron was trying to tell me something. (The phone rings and he answers it) Mulder. (Listening) Just a minute. (To Trini) It's for you and I doubt I need to tell you it's the same person who's been calling every fifteen minutes since we got here.

Trini: Great. (Taking the phone) What is it? (Angrily) Yes, I know what time it is and no I am not ready to leave. (Testily) Don't talk to me about how much sleep I need right now. I know what I need. (Listening) Yes, I know you're worried about me, but I'm perfectly safe with Mul. If this is how you're going to act for the next six-and-a-half months, we might seriously have to re-think this arrangement. (Listening) Threats don't work with me, so get over it! (Hanging up the phone) I hate when he gets in that overprotective mood.

Mulder: Well, he does have more to worry about now.

Trini: (Throwing him a look) Don't start, Mul. (hearing a noise from the computer) Okay, here we go. (Punching some buttons) Network open. (Watching the monitor) Link established and channel secure. (Typing) Houston, we have lift-off. (Reading) I need your personal access code.

Mulder: (Snapping his fingers) I always knew you were after my p.a.c. (Pausing) It's 98430005239.

Trini: (Hamming it up) You've found out my horrible secret. I have totally meaningless, but fun, sex with men for a week, wait almost twenty years later, and then con them into giving me their access codes. (Putting her hand to her head) However can I live with myself? (Laughing as she inputs the numbers) Geez, Mul. This number positively screams your paranoia. (Watching) Here goes. (Puzzled) All right. Who here is as confused as I am?

Mulder: What are you going on about now?

Trini: You said this was about your father's files, right? So, how did Sevh know the password to get into something that starts off with a letter to you?

Mulder: What? (Reading the screen) For my eyes only, hmm. (Pressing a button and reading) "Fox, this will be my final letter to you concerning the experimentation. Due to my forced retirement and my loss of access privileges, I cannot give you anything other than what is on this tape. By now, I'm sure you are dealing with my admission concerning your conception. I hope you found it within yourself, if not to have forgiven me, to at least understand why I did it. Unfortunately, this is not all I have kept from you in regards to this type of exercise. I was naive to believe I could keep the means behind your and Samantha's existence hidden. When it came to light, I was told I would participate in one more "experiment" and quietly retire. I was also told if I behaved, Sam would be given back to us and neither of you would ever have to be bothered about your uniqueness again. What choice did I have than to do what they wanted? My friend and colleague, Stewart Zachary had fallen out with his son over marrying the half-breed, so he offered me free reign to perfect my methods. Even though I had nothing against the boy, and knowing he was your friend, I had no choice but to use him. Sevh was sterile from an illness in adolescence. It was decided my method of diluting the DNA and injecting the solution over a period of six weeks was too time consuming, so it was arranged he have an accident and a full-strength, double-dose of the solution was administered. I tried to warn the others his physiology might not be compatible with the sample and it could kill him, but their minds were set. He became ill and almost died, but after he recovered, it was discovered we were successful. When the child was born, her gifts were not apparent. But, when we had the chance to test her, her responses were off the charts. Zachary has no feelings whatsoever for the child, so I believe one day they will take her to study, like Sam. God help us all if they do. From this point on, I wash my hands of everything because I have lost too much. To try to make some amends, I have sent a letter to Sevh outlining what was done to him and what they should do to protect the child. I only hope it will be enough. Again, I'm sorry, son." (Shaking his head and taking a deep breath) It wasn't enough, Dad.

Trini: (Shocked) Do you think Sevh and Sherron were killed protecting Hunter?

Mulder: Probably. (Looking off) When they couldn't find her, they figured killing them would stop the truth from getting out. (Thinking) Once they realized I had received my father's files, they figured nothing would stand in my way of getting to the truth and so they went after Hunter.

Trini: Then when they, whoever *they* are, saw you were preoccupied, your place became the next target and the files disappeared. (Shaking her head) Never a dull moment for you and yours, huh? (Reading and scrolling) The rest of this stuff details how your father and Sevh started working together to throw the others off. (Taking a deep breath) Did you know both Sherron and Sevh had surgery to prevent them from having more children? (Angrily) This is unbelievable! There is nothing on this planet that could stop me from having as many children as I wanted.

Mulder: Not even the knowledge that any child you created might be subject to suddenly disappearing without a trace. Or, possibly contracting a disease no one knows how to fight.

Trini: (Reading) Wait a minute, Mul. (Excited as she continues to read) Your dad gave Sevh the biological components to several man-made viruses used in germ warfare. (Looking at him) What if one of these is what they used on Hunter?

Mulder: It shouldn't be too hard to find out. (Hearing a noise outside of the door and tensing) If I tell you to take cover, I want you to do it - no questions asked. (Seeing her nod, he grabs his gun and cautiously moves to the door continuing their conversation) So, once we file these records, how about you and I grab Scully and see what we can come up with? (Just as he reaches for the knob, the door swings open hitting him and revealing his partner) Geez, Scully! I almost blew your head off.

Scully: (Chuckling) Was that before or after you hit the floor? (Looking to the other woman) Keemo sent the message that if you weren't back by his side by midnight, he was going to send the Komahkai brothers after you. (Grinning) I assumed you'd know who he was talking about.

Trini: (Snorting) Supposedly, my bodyguards. (Turning back to the screen and grinning) Of course, he doesn't realize I've already bribed them to ignore his orders and only follow mine.

Mulder: (Coming back to the terminal) If he ever found out, (Holding up his hands as she glares at him) not that I would tell him mind you, he'd hit the roof. (To Scully) Who's at the hospital?

Scully: I called my mom to relieve Dare and Kirk when I decided to come help you. I think Skinner was telling her how he and Hunter first met when I was leaving. (Pointing to the computer) Find anything useful?

Mulder: You want the abridged or unabridged version?

Scully: (Sitting) Surprise me.

As Mulder and Trini tell what they've discovered from the file, Scully quietly draws everything in until they run out of steam and story.

Trini: We figured the experiment was what Sherron meant by Hunter getting her gifts from her father. (Shaking her head) I didn't really want to believe Mul's "visitation," but this stuff is starting to add up.

Scully: (To Mulder) Did you ever suspect Hunter might have had a similar background as you?

Mulder: (Sighing) Up until a few days ago, I didn't suspect my own ... background. (Chagrined) When we were reading this, I almost couldn't believe it. I kept expecting a commercial to come on and an announcer to declare it was all a dream, but (Motioning around them) here we are.

Scully: Have you been able to determine if your dad gave Sevh a cure to the virus?

Trini: We were just about to call you when you showed up. Thought you might be able to identify the stuff faster than we could. (Moving to let Scully work) You have the conn, Lt. Cmdr. Scully.

Scully: (Working at the keyboard) We have to stop both of you from using those obscure Star Trek references no one else ever understands. (Reading) These are some pretty extensive notes - it's going to take me a while.

While Scully reads, Mulder and Trini move away from her so as not to distract her.

Mulder: (Disturbing his hair) If this doesn't yield anything, we might have to accept ... the inevitable.

Trini: (Sympathizing) You can't even say what "the inevitable" is. How are you going to be able to accept it? (Looking at Scully) We have to think positive thoughts. (Sadly) That and prayer are all we've got.

Same office

Trini has fallen asleep in one of the chairs while Mulder has been reading some files and Scully has continued her reading.

Scully: (Excited) Bingo!

Mulder: (Hurrying over) You found it?

Scully: (Standing, hugging him and returning to the screen) Viral agent Hes-9077, a mutated virus that closely resembles meningitis and attacks the brain damaging motor functions initially, causing coma, and finally destroying autonomic functions. (Grinning) Sounds awfully familiar, now doesn't it?

Mulder: (Returning the grin) It's spooky, isn't it? (Reading the screen) Does it say anything about a cure?

Scully: Of course it does! Why'd you think I was so excited. (Stopping) Do you realize if this stuff works on Hunter, it could probably affect you? (Confused) We've been pretty lucky they haven't used any of this on you.

Mulder: (Sobering) I guess we have been. (Shaking his head) Sherron said Hunter and I were a lot a like. I think, in a way, she was trying to warn me as well.

Scully: Well, we can't let her warning go in vain. (Punching a few buttons) I'm going to download the germ warfare info into my medical files. That way, if someone should break in, they won't see anything out of the ordinary. (Turning to her partner) We need to get this to the hospital asap, so they can whip up the serum and administer it to Hunter. Hopefully, they can forego the usual testing since this is so life-threatening. (Standing and stretching) If we're lucky, she'll be on the road to recovery by tomorrow night. (Heading for the door) Don't forget to wake Trini.

Mulder: (Grumbling) Why do I get all of the dangerous assignments?

Margaret Scully is sleeping and Skinner is pretending to read a magazine while Mulder paces. Scully walks in and everyone moves to her.

Skinner: How is she? Did it work?

Scully: (Tiredly) It is killing the viral agent. She should be completely clear of it in about three hours.

Margaret Scully: (Astutely) But ...

Scully: (Taking a deep breath) But, Hunter's not getting any better.

Mulder: Why? (Worriedly) You said it was the cure, so that has to mean she's getting better.

Scully: It is the cure to the virus, but it can't repair the damage that's already been done. (Shaking her head) And the damage was so extensive. (Sighing) At this point, she's probably looking forward to total paralysis.

Margaret: (Stricken) Oh no. (Leaning on Skinner for support) Is there nothing that can be done?

Scully: Not really. (Looking at them all) If she had any siblings, we might have been able to do some tissue grafts, but she's an only child. (Shaking her head) But, even that would be too risky because the main area of tissue would have to come from the brain and spinal column.

Skinner: What about putting out a request for a donor? There must be someone who could be a match.

Scully: Not really in this case. (Pausing) This type of tissue has to be taken from someone who meets several of the same criteria as Hunter. It would be near impossible to find anyone who would match her in a few categories, let alone all of them.

Mulder: (Finally speaking) What are the categories?

Scully: Mulder, it's no use.

Mulder: (Raising his voice) WHAT ARE THE CATEGORIES!

Scully: (Exasperated) Blood type; genetic factors; hereditary traits; the list goes on.

Mulder: Where can I be type-matched?

Scully: It would be a waste of time and money. (Glaring at him) You're not related to her, so I doubt you'd even come close.

Mulder: (Pushing) It couldn't hurt. (Desperately) I've got to try something.

Scully: (Tiredly as she ushers him out the door) Sure. Fine. Whatever.

11:45 am
Waiting area

Mulder is alone looking out the window at nothing in particular.

Scully: (Entering the room) You promised you'd try to get some rest. (Sighing) I went to the room I had assigned to you and when I didn't find you there, I knew you'd be here.

Mulder: (Turning) I couldn't sleep waiting for the re ... (Realizing why she's there) You've got the results.

Scully: (Walking to him) I don't know how or even what caused this, but, you and Hunter are enough of a match that the team feels the risks are within acceptable parameters.

Mulder: (Thrilled as he lifts her off the ground) Yes! (Putting her down) You are the greatest, Dr. Scully!

Scully: (Laughing) I didn't do much. (Taking his hands) It seems we had the strength of your beliefs yet again. (Sobering) There is something we need to discuss. (Motioning for him to sit and joining him) In your haste to help Hunter, I don't think you fully understood the ramifications of participating in this type of procedure. (Moving the hair from his eyes) The surgical team is going to make an incision towards the base of your head and using a laser scalpel, cut away a part of your skull. From that area, they will extract several tissue samples and replace the skull piece. From there, they will make another incision at the base of your neck and remove tissue from your spinal cord. (Taking a moment) All of this will take about five hours and in that time, you should make no mistake in thinking this isn't dangerous. Any number of things can go wrong, Mulder, and, because there is so much we don't know about this area of the body, the risks to you are just as great as those to Hunter.

Mulder: You think I haven't realized that. (Running his fingers through his hair) I've thought of nothing else since I was tested, and I won't deny I'm terrified of the possible outcomes. (Squeezing her hand) But, I'm more terrified of losing Hunter. (Standing and pacing) I know everyone thinks this is all tied into what happened to Sam and my feelings about that, but it's not about her. (Pausing) I have a chance to make good on whatever my father created. (Shaking his head) I'm not trying to atone for his sins - he did that when he lost Samantha. This is something I'm doing strictly for me and Hunter. (Pointing to himself) This is how we're going to survive. (Walking back to her) They can take all the files and information and make us out to be crazy so no one believes us, but ultimately, what they made us, is going to destroy them. (Thinking aloud) What we are has to survive to a time when we can give everyone the truth and they'll believe.

Scully: (Looking at him) I don't know whether to applaud and cheer or hit you on the head and demand you snap out of this delusional state. (Standing and sighing) Well, whatever your reasons, we need to get you checked in and prepped.

They leave and head for the admissions desk. As they get closer, he notices an understated door, almost hidden in its unobtrusiveness. For a reason unknown to him, he stops.

Mulder: You go ahead and start the paperwork, Scully. I'll catch up with you in a bit.

Scully: (Turning to look in the direction he is and understanding) If I was someone else, I'd almost believe the reason you're going in there is why most people do. (Smiling) But, since I'm me, I know you're just trying to avoid the paperwork. (Heading back) Don't take too long.

Mulder: I won't. (Entering the small room and heading to the front) I wonder if there's a place specifically geared for this kind of thing? (Sitting in one of the pews and talking to no one) I don't even know where to begin. (Sighing) I don't even know how to address you. (Remembering) Jehovah Yahweh, ... barouch atah adonai ... (Shaking his head) My childhood prayers seem so inadequate and from another lifetime, yet, I've never had any need for any adult ones. (Taking a deep breath) I lost my faith a long time ago. I don't make excuses for that; I just live with it. My center of belief has not relied on an organized religion but of an acceptance of all that is out there. (Whispering) I live by that belief. (Pausing) Because I could not really believe in the God of my Fathers as I had been taught, I never asked you for anything after ... I felt without the acknowledgement of your presence, you and I were both free to do what we wanted without expecting anything from the other. (Thinking) That was before Scully. (Grinning) It was almost like she was placed here to test my theories as well as what faith I might have had left. It almost diappeared altogether because I relied on her faith to pull us through the tough times, but, just when it seemed like mine was gone for good, she was taken from me. Suddenly, I had to believe you were out there and you would bring her back to me. (Clearing his throat) When she was returned, I had to have faith she would awaken to return as my partner. I didn't realize my faith had grown because of these things until Sevh and Sherron gave me Hunter. (Looking to the altar) Now, I ask you to bless what is about to happen because I don't know what the outcome will be. (Pausing) I have no doubt Hunter will make it and be the way she was before; I have the faith to believe in that. I just don't have enough to believe for myself. (Pausing again) So, just in case I've reached The End of your patience, please be with them if for some reason I can't.

Scully: (Stepping more into the room pushing a wheelchair) Are you about ready, Mulder?

Mulder: (Smiling as he walks over to the chair and lowers himself into it) As ready as I'll ever be.

She pushes him closer to the door and quietly wipes away the tears that streak her cheeks as she adds her own silent prayers.

4:25 am
Surgery waiting room

Skinner and Margaret are trying to carry on a conversation as they wait, but the silences keep growing. They looks up and see Scully coming toward them in surgical scrubs and stand to meet her.

Margaret: (Moving to them) How are they?

Scully: (Exhausted) Hunter's doing okay. She doesn't seem to be rejecting the grafts, so we're optimistic. (Pausing) She's going to need a lot of recuperation time.

Skinner: And Agent Mulder?

Scully: (Shivering slightly) He's being listed as critical right now.

Margaret: Critical! (Concerned) What happened?

Scully: Toward The End of the surgery, he started having seizures. We feared strokes, but we found no basis for that. (Sighing) He's having a little trouble breathing on his own, but that should pass. (Smiling tiredly) All-in-all, it could have been a lot worse. (Grinning at her mother) You didn't happen to bring your camera with you?

Margaret: (Puzzled) No, Dear, why?

Scully: (Chuckling as if drunk) I wanted to get a picture of Mulder before he wakes up. (Seeing their confused looks and swaying slightly) They shaved his entire head and he's got this huge, white, turban-like bandage on it. (Laughing hysterically and almost falling until Skinner moves in to support her) All it would take is one photo and the office would be under *my* control.

One month later
8:05 am
Office of the X-Files

Mulder is sitting at his desk finishing paperwork when Scully walks in.

Mulder: (Grinning) You're late.

Scully: Haven't we had this conversation before? (Removing her jacket and hanging it up) Mom called when I was leaving and wanted to know if we would need any help with Hunter. (Sitting) I told her we'd appreciate any help she could give us and told her to meet us at your new place around one.

Mulder: (Slurring his words) Why'd you do that? (Speaking carefully and slower) We could have managed.

Scully: No, we couldn't have. (Standing and moving behind him) Even though you're back at work, it doesn't mean you're fully recuperated. Neither your speech or movement are up to speed and you know that. (Ruffling the thick fuzz on his head) We're just trying to make things easier for the both of you. (Hugging him from behind) Let us.

Mulder: (Patting her hands) Okay. (Watching as she returns to her seat and continuing to talk carefully) Keep up with the time, we don't want to be late picking her up.

Scully: I am. (Smiling) With the amount of threats that child has been throwing, there is no way I would incur her wrath by forgetting to spring her.

Skinner knocks and he and Jonathon enter.

Skinner: (Glaring) I was coming down to get the Burkard file and found this suspicious-looking person wandering the halls searching for your office. (Grinning) Can you identify this gentleman?

Scully: I'm not sure. He does look familiar. (Eying her partner) What do you think, Mulder?

Mulder: (With a lopsided grin and speaking slowly) I'm with the AD. He does look suspicious.

Skinner: (Laughing) Yeah, as suspicious-looking as an Eagle Scout. (Turning back to the man) I hope you're not planning on keeping these agents too long, Jonathon. I've just got them back to their jobs.

Jonathon: I promise I won't keep them long, Walt. (Cheekily as he salutes) Scout's honour. (Pointing at him) We still on for golf on Saturday?

Skinner: Feeling like another ass-kicking on the links, huh? Yeah, we're still on. (Walking to Mulder's desk) Is the report for the file ready? (Taking it when Mulder hands it to him) Good job. (Preparing to leave) Scully, I'll be over to help as soon as I finish up here. (At the door) I can bring the wine if you like?

Scully: That won't be necessary since Mulder's still under Doctor's care. (Thinking) How about some ciders and ginger ale? That way, both of them can participate in the celebration.

Skinner: Fine. (He leaves)

Scully: (Crossing her arms) I still can't get over how he took to Hunter. (Shaking her head) Especially considering he's recovering from the divorce. (To Jon) I didn't know you knew each other?

Jonathon: (Cagily) I still have a few secrets here and there that no one knows about. Contrary to what Grey thinks.

Scully: Just don't let him know that. (Sensing Mulder's glare) What?

Mulder: He's coming too?

Scully: Yeah, well. (Avoiding the issue) So, Jonathon, what brings you down from your lofty office?

Jonathon: (Chuckling as he whispers to her) Good save. (Aloud) I bring only the best of news. (Reaching into his briefcase and pulling out some papers which he places in front of Mulder) I need you to sign some things.

Mulder: (Puzzled) What is this?

Jonathon: (Thrilled) Just the paperwork to petition for formal adoption of Hunter Shelby Ianha Zachary - soon-to-be - Mulder, if what I hear is true.

Mulder: (Slurring in his excitement) The adoption board is going to let me have her?

Jonathon: (Happily) With the changes you've made and with a few more, I think they feel you're a risk they're willing to take. Of course, you still have the home visits to pass, but I don't see that as problem.

Scully: But I thought he didn't stand a chance in Hell of having them *review* his petition.

Jonathon: That was before he did such a heroic and self-sacrificing thing. (Smirking) That phrase came from the Chair by the way. (Talking to Mulder) You really impressed them by what you did for a non-blood related child. Taking that into consideration, they couldn't possibly deny the review. (Shrugging) And, it didn't hurt getting the recommendation.

Mulder: (Beaming at his partner and speaking carefully) I can't believe she's actually going to be mine. (Remembering) Wait, Jonathon. You mentioned a recommendation. (Shaking his head) There was no one to ask, so I didn't look for anyone. (Seriously) Spill. Who got me Hunter?

Jonathon: (Sneakily) Let's just say, your Guardian Angel has been at work.

11:21 am
Georgetown Medical Center
Pediatric Wing, Rm. A223

A short-haired Hunter is patiently waiting in her wheelchair with her doll from before and a number of stuffed animals. The room is filled with flowers and balloons. When she sees Scully, her face lights up and the balloons start bobbing with her excitement. As Scully hugs her, Hunter looks for Mulder and only relaxes when she sees him slowly working his way to them with his cane. He kisses her forehead when he reaches her and she and Scully ruffle his fuzzy head. He then turns and directs the orderlies who came with him to get the flowers and other things. Once he's sure they're ready, the small entourage heads out. The view follows as they leave.

Mulder: (Voice-over) It has often been said out of darkness there can only be light. In The End, good always wins over evil. I always had reason to doubt these words as nothing more than trite colloquialisms spouted to control the masses. I knew they could not be true because what good could come from Samantha's abduction; Scully's disappearance; my father's, Melissa's, Sevh and Sherron's deaths and Hunter's illness. Now, with the eyes of a, if not renewed then, revitalized man, I can see Samantha's abduction brought me belief in the unknown; Scully brought me completeness and a rightness to my soul when she returned; the deaths gave me the determination to keep on searching and Hunter's illness reinforced a faith I had long thought I'd given up. I almost look forward to the days coming up and I look to those near me to help me embrace whatever comes. (Pausing) There is another phrase that comes to mind as we walk forward. (Another pause) Faith is not a question of not being alone as we try to exist; true faith is the belief "alone" has no place in existence.

The view fades and is replaced by that of Skinner shifting papers on his desk. He glances at the clock and sighs as he picks up more files and begins to write.

Skinner: (Voice-over) There have been many things in my life I have regretted participating in. As well as those things I regret not being a part of. I have tried my best to correct those errors in judgment in small, as well as in bureaucracy-breaking ways. At one point in my life, saving my neck and protecting myself were the only things important to me. I went even further and started shutting off parts of myself that I wanted to save from harm, even at the risk of someone very close to me. (Pausing) In some ways, I took too long to realize I was doing more harm than good, but I *did* realize. Now, if that means doing everything in my power to ensure the continuation and expectation of the future, then I will do so without regard to my consequences. (Pausing) Changes are coming as sure as there is a child's laughter and sunrises - it's only a matter of when and where. It is up to those of us with influence and some limited power to make sure no one faces those changes ... alone.
