Title: Vulcan Dreams Revisited Summary: Alternate ending to "Vulcan Dreams". I had a few complaints that "Vulcan Dreams" was too short and the ending could have been better. So, this is my attempt to please my readers. You must read "Vulcan Dreams" first, or this will make no sense at all. "This will be Kirk at 5 years old," announced Scully. "He's a good lookin' kid." "And here he is at 18. Kirk looks just like my dad when he went to Vietnam." "With pointy ears." "Well, he is a Vulcan." "Spock should be proud." "I don't think 'proud'' is the correct phrase." "Okay, I would be proud if Kirk were my son." "Thanks, Mulder. That really means a lot." USS Blackwell "A little." "I miss it too, sometimes." "So, what brings you here at this time of day?" "Spock can't make it for Kirk's removal from the Chamber today. I was wondering if you could be there with me at his birthing?" "I'd be honored, Scully." Fox Mulder followed his former partner to the BioGenetics lab. Captain Crusher, Dr. Car-on, and a young woman Mulder did not recognize were already there. Dr. Crusher said, "Hello, Mr. Mulder. It is so nice that you could be here today. I believe you know Dr. Car-on. This is Cadet Lea Ree, she will be Kirk's attendant." "Nice to meet you, Mr. Mulder," Lea offered her hand with a smile. "If you are done with the pleasantries, Captain, I do believe we should get on with the procedure," Dr. Car-on stated in a sterile tone. "Yes, of course, Doctor," Beverly Crusher responded. The Vulcan doctor flipped a switch on a control panel causing the green-hued tube to pull away from the wall. She turned a blue dial and Mulder heard the hiss of pressure being released from the container. Dr. Car-on walked over to the tube and removed the lid. Scully grasped Mulder's hand tightly. The doctor gently reached into the Invetro Chamber and pulled the baby free from it's artificial womb; green gel dripped from hr hands and the infant Vulcan. Lea Ree stepped forward with a warm moist towel to receive the newborn. Dr. Car-on then placed a suction devise over the baby's nose and mouth. Kirk yowled when the apparatus was removed. The young Beta Zoid carried her wriggling bundle over to a tub of warm water. She carefully placed the baby and the towel in the liquid and began washing away the green sludge. "He's amazing!" murmured the child's mother. "He's green!" announced Mulder in surprise. "Oh, Mr. Mulder, that's normal for a Vulcan newborn. The green will fade in a few hours," Beverly Crusher assured him. "Sorry, Mulder, I forgot to warn you," Scully added with an impish grin. The child began bawling as soon as he was removed from the tube. Lea Ree wrapped him in a soft, flannel receiving blanket. "You want to hold him?" she offered to his mother. "Oh, of course!" she responded with an adoring smile. Dana Scully tenderly held her baby and gently rocked him in her arms. "There, there...shh...little Kirk, Momma's got you now." Dr. Car-on brought over a bottle of formula. "Perhaps, you should feed the child." Scully took the bottle. "Certainly, Doctor. Thank you." "Here Kirk, open up," she said as she coaxed the baby's mouth open with the latex nipple. The little Vulcan greedily sucked his first meal. Two Weeks Later Ambassador Spock entered his wife's quarters. "Hello, Dana." The fiery red head was sitting in a rocking chair singing softly to her child. She looked up at the man who disturbed their evening routine. "Hello, Spock," she responded sarcastically,"so nice of you to finally visit your son." He walked over to the rocker and looked down at his family. "Dana, I was in the middle of negotiating a trade agreement between the Andorians and the Romulans. I could not negate my responsibilities just because Kirk was being removed from the Invetro Chamber." Fire blazed in her blue eyes. "Spock, you knew the date Kirk was to be removed. I don't understand how you could just schedule anything that would have interfered with something as important as the birth of your son!" "My duty to the Federation comes before my duty as a father. Really, Dana, I thought you would understand this." he said flatly. "Well, Spock, you thought wrong." He looked into her eyes with an understanding expression. "May I hold the child?" he asked stretching his arms out to her. "Kirk. He has a name: Kirk. You named him, remember?" " I do remember. May I hold Kirk?" "Yes, you may hold him. You should hold him," she said as she placed the baby in Spock's outstretched arms. Kirk intently gazed up at his father. Dana smiled. "Kirk seems to be studying you," she noted amused. "He is a fine specimen..." "Specimen?" "He favors you. I thought he would. Does he give you any trouble?" She smiled. "Not at all. Kirk is a good baby. He hardly ever cries." "How fortunate for you. He behaves like a Vulcan." "Do I note a hint of pride in your voice, Spock?" The Vulcan raised an eyebrow at his wife. "Certainly not. I'm just making an observation." "Oh, come on, Spock! Admit it! It's okay. After all, he is your son." His expression softened ever so slightly. "I find that holding my son is a satisfying experience." "Well, that's a start," she said with a grin. "Have you eaten? I could make dinner." "No. I have not eaten, but it is not necessary for you to prepare anything for me. I can go to the lounge and eat something there." "Nonsense. I won't hear of it. I will make dinner for you." "You really don't have to trouble yourself," he protested weakly. "Making dinner in the 24th Century is no trouble at all! You just press a few buttons and it's done. You must stay for dinner - I insist. I wouldn't be a good Irish wife if I didn't make at least one meal for my husband." "Thank you, Dana. I will stay. It will give me more time to get to know Kirk." 7:00 AM the next morning. Fox Mulder entered his best friend's quarters to find an unexpected guest. "Scully, I brought the lochs and bagels. I hope you still have the cream cheese," he called. Ambassador Spock came out of the nursery carrying Kirk. "Mr. Mulder?" he inquired, a bit surprised. "Spock?! What are you doing here?" "I am spending time with my family. What are you doing here at this hour of the day?" "Ah...breakfast...I have breakfast here every morning." "Really? Dana never mentioned it." Mulder began looking around, alarmed. "Where is Scully? Is she alright?" "My wife is fine. She is sleeping. We were up rather late last night getting acquainted." Mulder's face fell. "Oh," was all he could say. "I have already breakfasted, but you are welcome to stay and eat as is your custom." "No...no," he managed a pretend smile. "That's okay. I'll just go get something at the cafeteria. Will you give these to Scully? She really wanted bagels and lochs. I ordered them special for her. They took forever to get here." "I will place them in her refrigerated compartment." "Thanks," Mulder said as he laid the ancient earth delicacies on the dining table. He quickly left in silence. 8:30 AM two days later. Dana Scully knocked at Mulder's door, the auburn haired infant Vulcan on her hip. There was no answer. She knocked again. "Mulder? Mulder, I know you're in there." "Go away, Scully!" "Not until you tell me what's wrong with you! You haven't come out of your cabin in three days. If you don't let me in, I'll have Captain Crusher send security in and drag you to sick bay!" The door opened revealing a dirty, unshaven shadow of the man that used to be Fox Mulder. Dr. Scully placed Kirk on the couch and hurried over to her friend. "Mulder, are you ill?" she asked, her pretty features pinched in concern. He glared at her, his hazel eyes darkening to deep brown. "I'm four hundred years in the future. My sister is dead. Little green men really do exist and you're married to one of them!" Her expression changed from concern to dismay. "You're jealous of Spock? Is that what this is all about?" "Well, how would you feel if I slept with Lea Ree? I could you know. I hear Beta Zoids are really hot stuff!" "Your testosterone has gone to your head, Mulder. You have nothing to be jealous of." "Oh, no? Tell me you didn't sleep with Spock while he was here!" "If I choose to sleep in the same bed with my husband, it is none of your business!" "So, you admit it! You did sleep with him!" Little Kirk began to cry, alarmed by the angry words exchanged between his mother and his other favorite human. Mulder walked over to the couch and scooped up the wailing infant in his arms. "Hey, Buddy, don't cry. It's okay," he murmured as he held the baby against his chest. The crying ceased immediately. Mulder sat down on the couch gently rocking him. "You're so good with him," marveled the woman. The man closed his eyes as tears streamed down his rough cheeks. "I wish he were mine," he sobbed. Scully put her arms around both of them. "Me too, Mulder. Me too," she said kissing his brow as tears fell from her own eyes. Mulder's sobs grew louder, "Scully, Scully come back to me Scully!" She felt the pressure of his head on her chest. It was becoming hard to breath. His weight was beginning to crush her. Scully worried about her child - Mulder had to be crushing Kirk between them. "Kirk! Stop it, Mulder! You're hurting him!" she yelled. "Scully?! Oh, God, Scully, you're back!" Mulder exclaimed with joy. She felt him pull away from her. She looked into his smiling face. "Kirk? Where's Kirk?" she cried. "Kirk? Scully, there is no Kirk. We're after Spock, remember?" "My baby! What have you done with my baby?! she howled as she tried to get up. Mulder pushed her back down on the couch. "Scully, you've had a nasty bump on the head. There is no baby." All of a sudden, Dana Scully became aware of the throbbing sensation in the back of her brain. "Mulder, you were holding Kirk! What happened to Kirk?" "Scully, I don't know what you're talking about. You're not making any sense." "My baby, Kirk. You were holding him just a minute ago..." "Scully, you don't have a baby. There is no baby named Kirk. You're delirious from being pistol whipped." "Pistol whipped?" "The Spock impersonator we were after held you hostage. He banged you on the back of the head with his phaser." "Spock is my husband. He would never hold me hostage." Mulder laughed with glee," Spock is your husband? I knew you liked Star Trek, but I never knew you had a thing for Spock! Talk about fantasy land..." "It's not funny, Mulder! You were there..." "Well, Toto, you're back in Kansas now. You've been out for hours. Apparently, you've been having quite a dream." "Dream? It couldn't have been just a dream. We're in Starfleet uniforms." "That's our cover, Scully. Don't you remember? We're undercover at a Star Trek convention in Kansas." "Why?" "A man dressed as Spock has been banging unsuspecting female convention goers on the head with his phaser. He takes them to his room, bound and gagged, has his way with them and leaves." "Why are we investigating this? It's not an X-File." "Boy, that must be a nasty bump on your head. We're not on the X-Files anymore, Scully. Don't you remember?" Dana Scully was silent for a long time, processing the new information she had been given. Feeling the pain over the loss of her imagined baby as real as the pain in the back of her skull. No Emily. No Kirk. No husband. No Mulder wishing he was the father of her child. All she had to return to was an empty apartment. Apartment! Oh, no! Spock told her that Krycek was going to execute them in Mulder's apartment on Sunday. She had to warn Mulder. "Mulder?" "Yeah, Scully?" "Is it still Friday?" "Barely. It's almost midnight." "Are we going home tomorrow?" "Ah, I hadn't made any arrangements yet. I didn't know when you would be feeling better." "Can we stay for awhile?" "You wanna stay for the rest of the convention? You really are a closet Trekkie." "When is it over?" "Sunday." "I want to stay for a few days longer." "Why, Scully?" "I just need some place I can rest for awhile." "I'm sure the Bureau will agree to it. You've had a head injury..." "No, Mulder, not just me. I want you to stay too." "I think I like you better with a bump on the head, Scully! Are you propositioning me?" his eyes twinkled. "Look, Mulder, I know it doesn't make any sense, but Spock told me Krycek is going to execute us in your apartment on Sunday." "Spock told you?" "In my dream. Spock came to get us to save our lives." "You really don't want to go home because of a dream?" "I know it sounds silly, Mulder. Just humor me. You want me to believe all of your way out theories. For once, I'm asking you to believe one of mine." "Okay, Scully. Sure, I'll stay with you. I think I'll just step out and go get some Vulcan ears since they turn you on so much. They might come in handy." She punched him in the arm. "Now, who's dreaming, Mulder?" The end |
