Summary: This story is just a Mulder-Scully relationship, set in an alternative reality where Melissa and Bill Scully Sr. are still alive.

Hi!

This is the first X-Files story I have written - guess I wanted to make up for all the reading I've done. Whilst on the subject, does anyone know about the other parts of "Generations: Too Close For Comfort?" I loved this story and would like to read more. Also, what about Scully and Mulder's baby? Is there going to be a sequel. I would also like to know if there were sequels to "The Sound of Windchimes" or "The Seducer" Let me know what you think of my story - should I bother writing a sequel? - or just leave me a message anyway. I don't have E-mail but I'll be checking the Usenet regularly till March 31st at least, so please leave me a message - hey I want to talk to people!! After that I'll try and find myself an E-mail address.

There are no bizarre plot lines or third season spoilers (I havn't seen it yet) not too much angst and no 'darkness' or government conspiracies. If you arn't interested in this kind of thing, then don't read it.

Last thing: sorry for any medical discrepancies: I don't have a clue and invented most of it.

"It's a beautiful life
I just wanna be here beside you
And stay until the break of dawn" - Ace of Base

The movie was pretty good but Fox Mulder wasn't watching it. He was too busy gazing at his new wife. It had been just under four months since their wedding but he still felt as if he was living in a dream, unable to believe that something this wonderful could have happened to him. She'd taken away the darkness in him and his world and shown him just what really mattered, and although his sister still mattered a great deal to him, he was finally beginning to accept that she was gone, and start to live his life as she would have wanted him to. Perhaps he would even have children of his own. This idea filled him with wonder; he had never thought about it up until then, he'd always assumed it was just something that happened to other people, but now it was constantly on his mind. Maybe he would ask Dana tonight, see what she thought. She'd be a brilliant mother, he knew that much. He pictured them with children, laughing and happy. Shopping for clothes and toys, family outings - all of this could be his. Fox couldn't help but smile.

As the movie finished, Dana stretched her legs, preparing to make them both a cup of coffee. She'd been aware for several days that Fox had something on his mind and that it was giving him great pleasure to think about it, but he wouldn't let her into the secret and she was beginning to worry a little. What could it be that he wasn't telling her? It was almost as if he was afraid of something how she'd react? What if... Dana stopped herself right there and felt guilty for not trusting him, even just for one second.

Shrugging it aside, she went into the kitchen.

The house they shared was new and quite large and towards the edge of town. Dana loved it. Fox had been reluctant to abandon his apartment in favour of hers, even temporarily, as at first it was. But then he bought her the house. She remembered the day only too well; it had been three weeks after their wedding, and her birthday. He'd fastened a blindfold over her eyes and driven around the block four times to confuse her before taking her to see it. He'd even wrapped a red ribbon around it and tied it in a huge bow at the front, complete with gift tag. Some of the furniture was already in place, other parts were quite bare "so that we could finish it together" he'd said.

And she'd loved him more than ever. Now it was their own place, every part of it reflecting them, their personalities and their love.

They'd been there nearly three months and it already held so many memories. There were still several rooms left more or less empty-"For our children" he'd told her laughingly, with that familiar twinkle in his eye. As she poured the coffee she wondered for the millionth time whether he'd really meant that or whether it was just another of his endless jokes. Certainly she had thought about having children. Always before, though, she had been able to put it ahead, in the future, but now the time was perfect. Charles' and Fiona's second baby had come just a short while ago, and now, Dana felt, everyone was waiting for her addition to the family. If only she knew what Fox thought.

She'd have to ask him soon; she couldn't keep putting it off.

Maybe tonight...

As Dana handed him his coffee, Fox looked up into her eyes.

"Dana," he said, and then hesitated. He didn't want to push her into anything and he knew he'd have to choose his words carefully.

She looked at him expectantly. "Dana, I want to talk to you about something. It's just an idea, ok, nothing too serious. I just want to know how you feel about... us having a baby" The last words came out in a rush and he felt his face turn red as he waited for her reaction.

"How serious?" she asked at length.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean have you really thought about this? Y'know, sleepless nights, dirty nappies, goo all over your files. It'll be a big change."

"I have thought; I've thought a lot and I'm sure. I really want this, Dana, more than anything, but I'd hate to think that I was pressuring you at all so don't say yes because of me..."

"Fox, I'd love to have your child"

The grin spread slowly across his face as he realized what she had said.

"Really?"

"Really"

"Well in that case..." Fox smiled. The night was just beginning.

Part Two

Fox awoke late as the sun shone through the window and a light breeze fluttered the curtains. Spring was definitely coming, he thought, and made a mental note to take Dana out somewhere to enjoy it. They'd just finished helping out on a long and complicated case, and Skinner had offered them a few days off. They'd accepted readily. He reached lazily across to his wife but there was just a dent in the pillow and wrinkles in the sheet where she had been. Wandering downstairs and into the kitchen, there was no sign of her. Oh well. She must have gone shopping or something. Breakfast was laid out on the table, along with the mail and a note. Sure enough:

"Had to pick up a few things. I'll probably call by and see Mum but I'll be back soon. Don't forget to feed Fruitcake when she comes in!"

Fruitcake was their cat. An affectionate young tabby, Mulder had adopted her from a friend whose own pet had unexpectedly had kittens a short while back. Dana was not too keen on the idea of having a dog, and Fruitcake had been something of a compromise. He felt her brush lovingly against his leg and bent down to make a fuss of her, before refilling her dish.

Stepping back, he wondered how such a tiny kitten could eat so much. He supposed it was because she was growing - she was already much larger than the tiny, fluffy bundle that he had brought home in a shoebox on Christmas Day. It was then that he remembered the events of the night before and realized what Dana had had to 'pick up' Forgetting about breakfast, he settled down by the window and waited for her return...

Dana closed the door behind her, dropped her bags and kicked off her shoes. Fox was standing in the hallway, his face questioning. She knew exactly what he wanted to know and sadly she shook her head.

"Not this time. Not yet."

Silently, he took her into his arms and then she knew for sure that it didn't matter, that there was plenty of time yet.

Two weeks later, Fox was sitting idly at his desk when Dana walked back in. "I've got it," she told him, showing him the small test tube she held in her hand "I took it down to the lab so it should be pretty accurate."

"How will you know?"

"If it turns darker, I am, lighter and I'm not. It usually takes a few minutes."

As they gazed hopefully at the liquid, willing it to change, the door banged open and AD Skinner walked in. Fox held the sample under his desk; it was as well Skinner didn't know yet, and understanding, Dana slipped off his desk and returned to his own. Both could see that he was not pleased and prepared for his outburst.

"Agent Mulder, Scully. When I take the time of arranging a meeting with you, despite my busy schedule, I expect you to at least turn up. After all the fuss you made to see me you didn't even come. Now I don't expect this kind of behaviour especially from you two. I make enough allowances as it is. I am constantly bending over backwards, putting my job on the line, so that you can have the freedom that you need for The X-Files. I am thoroughly disappointed." And with that he left.

There was silence in the small basement office for a few minutes after the door slammed shut. They'd been so preoccupied with Dana's pregnancy test that both of them had completely forgotten about the meeting. Fox knew he'd have to go and grovel for a long time, when the AD had calmed down a bit. "Whoops..." he said, with just a hint of a mischievous grin.

"I'll have go make it up to him later"

"Maybe you can tell him why we forgot" Both pairs of eyes rested on his hand, holding the narrow glass tube just of sight. He looked at her nervously and she smiled, before he slowly peered under the desk. Dana watched him, anxiously gazing into his face, his eyes, looking for some kind of clue. He remained neutral, holding the vial so that she could not see the color.

Finally, unable to stand it any more, she reached over and pulled the tube out of his hands, careful not to break it. It was jet black. Flinging her arms around him in joy, she whispered "I love you" in his ear. He held her tightly. Now everything was perfect.

Two months later, Fox checked one last time to make sure he had everything - keys, wallet, cellular phone - and left the house. Dana was already waiting for him in the car; today she was having the first scans and tests to check everything was fine and then they were going on their first major 'baby' shopping trip, before dropping by to see her family. They'd decided not to let on until they were sure, and then Fox had suggested they drop by today with the ultrasound scan and surprise every one. He was rather nervous as he sat in the small waiting room at the surgery. He'd wanted to be by Dana's side but the doctor had said it wasn't really practical just yet, and so now he was idly flicking through the various magazines on the round coffee table as staff and patients went about their work around him. After what seemed like eternity, the nurse came out.

"Ok, Mr Mulder, you can come in and see the doctor now."

Fox walked into the office and found his wife sitting down in front of Dr Moore's desk. He greeted both her and the doctor then took a seat next to her.

"Well, Mr Mulder, as I've just been telling your wife, everything is going as well as can be expected. The scans have all come up clear and the baby appears to be very healthy. Congratulations!"

As they got in the car, she told him.

"It's a girl, Fox. We've got a little girl." Her face glowed with happiness and he could tell that she was as happy as he was. He held her in his arms for several long minutes before he said "Well I guess we'd better hit the shops then."

Part Three

Margaret Scully could tell by the expression on their faces that something was up. For ages now the pair of them had been aglow with some great news, something that had brought them great pleasure, and now it looked as if they were finally going to tell her. Dana pushed the sheet of paper shyly across the table, a photocopy of something. There was some indecipherable code across the top and the rest was just a mass of black and white, like a snowy television screen. Margaret was confused.

"Dana, honey, I don't really understand. What is this?"

Fox leant over, the love in his voice unmistakable as he pointed to the lightest mass in the centre "It's a picture... A picture of our baby girl."

Margaret was speechless. Now this she hadn't expected. Although she knew that Dana and Fox would be fantastic parents one day, she'd thought that their work was too important to them to find time for children now.

So far she had four children and two grandchildren, but neither Missy nor Bill Jr were married yet, and Charles and Fiona currently lived in Chicago, too far away. It would be wonderful to have a new baby around - maybe they'd let her babysit if Dana went back to work. She enveloped her daughter in a huge hug. "Oh congratulations, honey, that's fantastic.

You must wait till your father comes home, he'll be so proud. Oh Dana..."

The rest of the afternoon was spent going through the things they'd bought - no easy task! They'd had to make three trips back to the car, laden with baby clothes, toys, furniture and everything else they could possibly need, including a small beautiful dolphin mobile that Dana had fallen in love with. When Bill Scully returned, the bags were hastily hidden away under various items of furniture until the room looked vaguely normal again.

As Bill Scully walked into his living room, he was somewhat suspicious to find both his wife, his daughter and his son-in-law all sitting there silently. Dana, he noted, was trying not to laugh and Margaret couldn't fail to hide the pleasure on her face. He greeted them in turn.

"Coffee, love?"

"Please."

He sat down in his chair in the corner of the room, and as he did so there was a loud squeak. Growing more and more confused, he reached under the cushion and pulled out... A stuffed penguin?! Dana couldn't help herself; she burst into fits of giggles and ran to help her mother.

"Women!" he said in despair and sat down again.

"So what brings you over here then, Fox?"

"Oh, we've just been doing a spot of shopping and thought we'd drop by. See how everyone was."

"Anything interesting?"

"Well... Dana bought me a few new ties." Bill had to laugh "It's about time!"

At that moment Margaret came in with the coffee and Dana, following behind, tripped over the rug.

"Oh honey, are you all right?" Dana nodded as she got back onto her feet "Sure?"

"I'm fine, Mum!"

"For goodness sake, Meg, she just fell over the rug. What's the matter with you?"

His eyes took in similar concern on Fox's face.

"All right will someone please just tell me what is going on before I go mad!"

And so they did. Bill shook his head bemusedly "My little girl having a baby of her own. I guess you grew up huh? Y'know, Dana, I'm really proud of you - and Fox. You've found what really matters in life and that's more important than anything else."

Part Four

Six months later

"The mail is here... hmmm, nothing very exciting. Oh but for this one.

It's for you, Dana." Fox dropped the envelope in her lap and she slit it open. It was from Dr Moore's surgery. "Dear Mrs Mulder," it read, "I would like to speak to you about your present medical condition and have therefore made a provisional appointment for you as follows..."

Dana was worried. She'd just had a check-up and everything was fine so why were they asking her to come back?

"What is it?" asked Fox, noting her expression.

"Oh... nothing important," she told him, deciding not to give him the worry it was giving her. If there was anything wrong, she'd tell him then.

Finally, Dr Moore entered the office and sat down.

"Hi Dana," she said. "We've had back the results of the long term tests and I'm afraid that we're a little worried."

"Worried how?"

"Well, the baby seems to have been affected by some kind of genetic abnormality which hasn't shown up on the scans up until now, and it could be quite serious. Obviously at this stage we don't know too much so I'd like to arrange for you to be hospitalised - just for a couple of days - so that we can run some more complex tests."

"But what about the baby? Is she all right?"

Dr Moore hesitated. "We really can't say yet. I promise I'll let you know as soon as the test results come through."

Dana found herself shaking as she sat down in Dr Moore's office for the second time that week. She longed to have Fox with her, to tell her everything was all right, but he was still in Chicago. He'd phoned a few times but she hadn't told him what was happening, not wanting him to worry like she was.

"Ok, Dana, we've done every examination we possibly can and it's all here."

She tapped the large file on her desk. "First, the..."

"Please, I don't want to know the technical stuff. Please just tell me if the baby's all right. Please..."

Dr Moore took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "We're afraid that the situation is pretty serious. We've discussed all the options - c-section, everything - but we think all you can do is carry the child to term, and give birth normally. There's a risk she might be stillborn"

"How great a risk?" Dana's face showed her fear, almost numbed by what she'd been told. Dr Moore couldn't bear to face her and instead stared down at her hands, folded neatly in her lap. Finally she whispered "Oh Dana, I'm so sorry."

Fox Mulder waved farewell to Special Agent Simon Hardcastle and walked briskly up to his front door. The night was bitterly cold and he was anxious to see his wife again. He'd been away for two weeks - much longer than he'd anticipated - and there was just four weeks left until Dana was due. As the door swung open he called out to her, but there was no reply, although her shoes lay beside the door, where she had kicked them off, and her bag and jacket had been thrown over the back of a chair. He frowned.

Not at all like Dana.

There was a light on upstairs and he could faintly hear music, and so he climbed the stairs swiftly. Closer now, and he recognized the tune. It was from the CD that he'd given her one anniversary, the song one of their favorites, their 'special' song. He paused, just for a second, to take in the familiar words, and the memories they brought back...

You've got that that look again
the one I hoped I had when I was a lad
your face is just beaming
your smile got me boasting, my pulse rollercoastering"
"Any way the four winds that blow
they're gonna send me sailing home to you
or I'll fly with the force of a rainbow
the dream of gold will be waiting in you eyes"

You know I'd do most anything you want
hey I, I try to give you everything you need
I can see that it gets to you
I don't believe in many things
but in you I do

Pushing open the door, he entered their bedroom. She was lying on the bed, her back to him, her knees drawn up as if to protect their unborn child.

"Dana?" he asked, hesitantly. No reply. He walked around the bed, and knelt down beside her, gently lifting up her chin to look into her face.

She was crying. Not much now, her energy spent, the tears were just running silently down her face, but her eyes were red and sore, and he could tell she'd been there a long time. His heart broke just seeing her like it; when they'd married, he'd sworn that he'd never let anything make her cry again, would always protect her, and now he'd let her down. She appeared to see him and tried to struggle upright, but he pushed her gently back down.

"Oh Dana... what happened? Has someone hurt you? Is there something wrong with the baby? No don't, just stay there. I'm calling the doctor."

He returned with a wet cloth and a glass of fresh cool water. As she started to fall asleep, he gently bathed her face and she whispered her thanks to him.

Much later, after saying goodbye to Dr Moore, he came back up. The doctor had explained everything; there was nothing anyone could do for Dana but she did need plenty of rest, from now right up until the birth.

Quietly, so as not to disturb her, he went to bed, trying to make sense off all that had happened.

Part Five

Dana's condition improved slightly over the next few days, but Fox continued to worry greatly. He watched the sorrow on her face as the baby gently kicked out, knowing like she did that she'd probably never be able to hold her daughter in her arms, that this was the closest she'd ever get to feeling her. The days were long and slow, and so painful.

They tried to carry on as if nothing had ever happened, but everyday they faced the reminders. Dana was always conscious of the looks she was receiving, the whispers and worse; the congratulations from those who were not aware. Even around the house, the things they'd bought, the gifts they'd received. She'd watched him trying to hide them, remembering a time long before when they'd hidden it all from her father.

She longed to turn back the clock. The nursery door stayed firmly shut, except now and again, when she would sit perhaps on the windowsill, holding in her arms the large, fluffy white bunny she'd chosen, watching the wooden mobile swing slowly around in the last rays of sunlight. On these occasions, he'd stayed away, knowing that she needed to be alone.

Two weeks after their bombshell, things were finally beginning to return to some semblance of normality, although both were secretly dreading the birth of their child as they walked together down to the office. But as the door swung open, Dana was amazed. Inspector Phoebe Green of Scotland Yard was sitting amiably behind Fox's desk, a playful smile teasing her lips as she saw their surprise. Dana walked silently to her desk, conscious for the first time of how awful she must look, and began furiously tapping away at her computer. She was reassured to hear that, across the room, her husband sounded stiff and unemotional as he greeted Phoebe.

Fox was possibly more stunned than his wife. It had been two and a half years since he'd last seen Phoebe, after the L'Ively case, and then he'd caught her in the arms of another, married man before she'd vanished completely without contacting him, leaving him confused and unsure. Now, as he looked at her, he knew why she was back again, obviously expecting him to come running. He saw the smirk crossing her face as Dana moved silently into her corner, and suddenly he hated her with burning passion, as great as the love he had for his wife. She must know he was married now; probably she liked the challenge. He replied coldly to her welcome, and she looked at him questioningly. "Well?" he asked, clearly irritated, "What is it you want now?"

The hurt showed in her eyes, and for a moment he regretted it, but when she spoke, her voice held merely arrogance. "I'm here on a case, Mulder.

I thought you might be interested in giving me a hand. Another three-pipe-problem."

Fox did not acknowledge the joke, merely asking "So what have you got?"

"There's been a man working in the London area. Burglary, but he obviously knows what he's doing. He leaves no prints, no clues. He takes everything he can, and he must doing pretty well by now. There's been ten so far this last couple of months."

"How do you know it's the same person?"

"Each time he does a job, he lies in wait for someone to come home, strangles them and leaves the corpse hanging directly in front of the door, ready for the next person."

"So what has this got to do with me?"

"We've got our eyes on a man living just in the north-west of London Harrow to be precise. So far, though, he's managed to evade us. We've tried surveillance, but he seems to be working alone and always gives us the slip.

He's just taken a trip to Washington DC and we think it could be a protective measure. However, he seems to have blown his cover. We think he's been doing a spot of sightseeing. Last night, a house was burgled and the owner murdered in exactly the same way. We're positive it's him. They're going over the crime scene as we speak."

Fox nodded curtly. "Ok, we'd better get going. Dana, you coming? You could probably use the fresh air."

Dana looked up sharply. He did have a point, she thought. "All right" she said aloud. Fox thought he caught the hint of a smile crossing her clouded face, and was pleased. Scooping up his topcoat, he followed Phoebe out, stopping to hold the door for Dana.

Phoebe stood in the main entrance to the J Edgar Hoover building waiting for Fox, who'd gone to sort out the necessary warrants and documentation. Dana was standing across the hall, listening to some guy who she didn't recognize.

She looked pretty awful, Phoebe thought. Maybe someone had or something.

Or maybe she's had a fight with Mulder. A smile crept across her face. And she'd put on weight. Despite being a fortnight away from giving birth, Dana's belly was still fairly small, and it did not occur to Phoebe for one minute that she might be pregnant - just badly messed up. She'd obviously lost it completely. No competition. She caught sight of Fox striding down the hall, but at the same moment, she heard a commotion off to her left and turned sharply. She watched Dana clutching her belly, bent double, supported by a couple of agents, others approaching.

She's obviously pretty desperate. You can't help feeling sorry for her really, contemplated Phoebe. And I just know that Fox will be straight back in my arms once he realizes she's faking...

Fox also heard the commotion, but was unable to see what was happening, due to the throng that had gathered by then, before being spotted by one of the men at the edge of the mob. "Agent Mulder!" came the cry "It's your wife"

Running forward, the people drew back as he pushed his way through. Dana was by now slumped down against the wall and he squatted down to talk to her.

"It's okay," she protested "It was just a twinge or something."

He stared into her eyes for a few seconds before rising to his feet and turning to face the crowd, watching with bated breath.

"Somebody call an ambulance!" he yelled across the hall.

Phoebe was still watching as the ambulance arrived and Dana was helped gently onto a stretcher, before being taken off to hospital. Fox went with her, and the crowd began to disperse, everyone talking at once. Phoebe wandered thoughtfully back to Mulder's office, deciding to wait for a bit.

As she walked away, AD Skinner came thundering down.

"Why didn't anyone call me sooner?" he bellowed, turning to the frightened receptionist "Call the family, they need to know. Where have they taken her?"

Part Six

Dana was drifting in and out of consciousness. She was aware of her husband talking to her, holding her hand, but she couldn't find the strength to respond. Suddenly another wave of pain cascaded through her abdomen, and she remembered what was happening. She had time to think how excited they might have been before the blackness came swirling back.

"Ok, we're giving her oxygen now so she should stay with us. Dana? Can you hear me? It's ok, honey, we're gonna get you into hospital as soon as we can. Don't worry about a thing."

Fox ran alongside as they rushed his wife into the hospital and lifted her across onto a bed. Several people came over to them, and as Fox looked up he could see they knew about the baby and his heart sank. They were obviously expecting a stillbirth. The last spark of hope within him flickered and died.

"Come on, Dana, it's nearly over. Keep pushing, for me." Fox had his arms wrapped tightly around her shoulders as she struggled with the pain.

"I can't" she was sobbing "I can't do it."

"You can, I know you can. Just one more push!"

Dana cried out again as the contraction came on, and concentrated the last of her energy for as long as she could. Suddenly, the baby seemed to appear in the hands of the nurse, small, red and wet, and was whisked away out of sight, at amazing speed. Fox was overcome by the sight, even knowing that she was dead, that it was all over for her.

Dana slumped back onto the bed and cried silently for her baby. She was barely conscious whilst the placenta was delivered, and the nurses cleaned everything up, before moving her into a small room on the next floor, where she fell asleep in his arms. He left her there, and wandered out into the busy corridors to wait for Dana's mother and the rest of the family to arrive.

He'd been standing there for nearly fifteen minutes when a nurse walking past noticed him and looked at him in surprise.

"There you are!" she exclaimed. "We've been looking all over for you, Mr Mulder. Congratulations!"

"What..." he managed.

"You have a baby girl - oh, but I think you already knew that. How's your wife doing?"

"No," he told her, "You don't understand. Our daughter is dead, there was something wrong with her."

Puzzled she took his arm and led him off. Fox found himself outside a small room with a large window covering most of the wall. A young couple were standing outside, excitedly pointing through the glass. He glanced across to see what they were looked at and momentarily winced in pain. It was obviously the hospital nursery. There were several babies wrapped cosily in blankets in cots... and one empty cot, unused.

"Come on!" The nurse was calling him. He followed her through into another room, where several nurses were gathered about doing various tasks. She led him over to an older woman in a dark blue uniform, who looked at him in surprise. She was obviously in charge.

"Sister Caroline, this is Mr. Mulder."

Her eyes showed immediate understanding.

"Oh right," she said. "I expect you'll want to take her down to see your wife. She's doing very well so I think that should be all right. I'll send someone down to collect her in about twenty minutes, is that all right?"

Before he could answer, he was delicately passed a small pink bundle. It wriggled in his arms, and he realized it was a baby. A newborn baby girl.

"No," he explained for the second time. "You've made a mistake. Our baby was stillborn. There was something wrong with her."

"No, there's no mistake. You're very lucky, I admit, but your daughter is fully healthy. Now go on and find your wife."

With a smile she was gone.

Fox stood there, trying to digest the information. In his arms, the baby gurgled softly and he peered down at her. When he looked up, a grin had spread across his face, and his eyes were bright with tears. But they were tears of joy.

Dana awoke quietly, unsure of what had happened. She had some vague memories, but they seemed more like a dream than anything else, and she felt peaceful and relaxed. Gradually, it came swimming back to her. She was in hospital. She'd just given birth. And her baby was dead. Ten seconds later the storm of emotions hit her full in the face. The anger, the grief, the pain, the sadness, and finally the aching, silent emptiness.

The tears began to well up inside. It was at that moment someone held a small, warm bundle close to her face.

As he walked in, Fox was relieved to see his wife coming to, but she didn't seem to have seen him and before he could speak to her, tell her what had happened, her face crumpled and she began to cry again. Desperately, he lifted the baby away and whispered

"It's all right, my love, she made it. She's alive! We've got a little baby girl. Oh Dana, she's so beautiful..."

Dana struggled to understand what was happening. She heard her husband there, whispering to her, and then gently pulling her upright. As she focused upon her surroundings he placed in her arms... A baby. No! How could he do this, how could he taunt her like this. She opened her mouth to tell him and looked into his eyes... and then she knew.

As she cradled her daughter close to her, Dana whispered.

"What are we going to call our baby girl, Fox?"

"Call her Rebecca." She looked at him again. "It means 'of the light.'"

"Rebecca..." she murmured. Yes, it was right. "Rebecca Elizabeth Mulder. I love you, my darlings, both of you."

And they were together, and everything was wonderful again, and Dana felt happiness as she had not done for a long time. There was a knock at the door and another nurse looked in.

"Mr and Mrs Mulder, your family has arrived."

Fox smiled softly. I wonder where Phoebe is? he thought.

The End!!

Okay, so what do you think? Please let me know. I'm considering writing something else - maybe a sequel or may be going back to say their marriage or something, or maybe something completely different. My friend and fellow 'phile Fiona has a whole X-Files plot idea - really spooky, and with all the evidence, so maybe we might have a go at writing some day.
