Disclaimer: I don't own the x-files characters. Chris Carter, Fox, etc. own all the rights. No infringement intended. I just play with the characters to work out my own fantasies. It gives them something to do while CC is trying to decide who to kill off next or come up with a Monster-of-the-Week.

Summary: Scully explains human nature to a clone.

"But you don't understand," objected Dana Scully as she hurried to keep up with the clone slightly ahead of her.

"What do you mean?" asked the clone, R43, pausing briefly to face her.

Scully tried to exlain in a rational manner, "Mammals are usually protective of their offspring."

R43 shrugged and resumed walking down the hall.

Scully tried again, "Most humans would object to anyone taking their young."

"But there are so many of them," countered R43. "Surely they wouldn't mind us taking just a few."

As R43 reached for the knob to open a door, Scully put a hand on his arm to detain him once more. "You don't understand," she repeated in frustration. "Many humans, especially females, would VERY aggressively defend their children from perceived dangers."

R43 looked at her a moment, then blinked slowly. "You place too much importance on this "protection" instinct. Once it's done, nobody will remember them long."

"You REALLY don't understand," Scully sighed. Then she drew out her Sig and blew his head off.

She reholstered her gun. Then, scooting the body out of the way, she entered the room. The little girl sat up in the bed, eyes frightened, and asked, "What happened? What was that noise?"

Scully answered, "Don't worry, Honey. Mommy will take care of you."
