Title: Return to Me Summary: Scully has a child, and Mulder returns with his memory slightly gone. He begins to remember them in dreams and Scully is asked to reveal the father to the F.B.I. Prologue Scully sleeps in a hospital room. She is restless in her dream, as she sees Mulder. She calls out in her dream, and he turns around to face her, sadness in his beautiful green eyes. She sees him turn back around to walk away, into the bright blue light that has enchanted him. A flash comes, as Mulder steps into it's center. He looks one more time to her, with a small smile of regret on his face. The next moment he is gone. Scully wakes up, saying to herself, "Mulder, why did you have to leave me? You have a child, and I can't take care of the child myself." 1 month Scully was sitting in her apartment. She held a picture of Mulder as, she thought.of his absence. She saw the serious face stare blankly up at her, and she couldn't take it anymore. She threw it across the room, smashing the glass in an explosion of anger and sorrow. She buried her face in her hands, and looked up. When she looked up, Missy stood before her. Her hand was outstretched towards her, and Scully got up to touch that glowing hand. As soon as Melissa's hand met Dana's, she could hear her sister speak. "Dana, he needs you to be strong. You are to be strong for him." Scully's older sister said. Scully's eyes had welled up with tears. She asked, "Missy, how do I help him? He's gone, up there." "Be strong for his child. Be able to carry on until his return. He'll return to you, you have to believe that. I know that he will come back to you." Missy stated, her small charm at her throat catching the light. Scully said, "I don't know if I can be strong without him. I don't know if I can do that. I don't know how." Missy Scully held Dana Scully's hand firmly. She looked into Scully's eyes, saying, "You can, because he needs you to be. You can for his child, and you can for your child. I know you, Dana. You were always the strongest one in the family. He's in a dark place, you are his light, just as he is for you. You will be strong. I know you can, Dana." Scully saw her sister fade away, and she called out, "Missy, come back!" Missy gave a small wave, and said before she disappeared, "We'll see a lot more of each other soon." Scully sat down perplexed. She didn't know how to deal with all of this, and she was afraid. She had to be strong for Mulder. He wouldn't expect any less. 9 months later Scully is once again laying in a hospital bed. She has just spent her day of December 11th in intense labor. She now lay asleep from exhaustion in a bed, peacefully, a big change from what she had looked like only two hours ago. Her face was streaked with sweat, and her hair has considerably dampened with the exertions she had gone under during her labor. In her sleep, her face now remains unlined, and she does not stir when a nurse enters, cleaning the room up for her. The doctors would let her sleep for a few hours, and then wake her to let her hold the daughter that she had given birth to earlier that day. Scully for now only needed to sleep. This child was going to be in more danger than most children faced in an entire life time. She only hoped that things would work out for the child, though Mulder was not here for his daughter, at least not yet. Her infertility had been questioned by this child, and she remembered, though with regret the conversation that she had had with the Cancer Man. The chip in her neck was a cure for any infliction. Maybe it had reversed the infertility she had endured as well, allowing her to conceive a child with Mulder in one night where there love was expressed. She had hoped to tell him, he still thinking that she was infertile, and not able to have the family she had always wanted. She had always had the man she loved, now she had his child, and not him. She would find him, and no matter what it took, their daughter and her father would meet. It was everything. She could hear Mulder's voice whisper into her ear all over again as she slept. He had been holding her, and she had wished that he would kiss her there, but it had been too dangerous. He had held her close, telling her once again to leave the one love she could never leave behind. He had whispered into her ear, "It's not worth it, Scully." She had asked, "What?" He had answered, "I want you to go home." She had replied, knowing what he feared, "Oh, Mulder, I'm fine." Mulder had whispered why he wanted her to go, "No, no, I've been thinking about it. Looking at you when you were holding that baby. Knowing everything that had been taken away from you. Chance for motherhood and your health, and that baby. I think that maybe they were right." Scully asked, fearful of his answer, "Who's right?" Mulder answered, his voice filled with regret. "The F.B.I. Maybe what they say is true. But for all the wrong reasons. It's the personal quest that is too high. There's so much to your life, so much more than this." He paused, and whispered, "Ask me again, Scully." He had then bent down, kissing her on the cheek. Scully in the hospital woke up. She said, "Mulder, this is all I've ever needed. You have been so wrong, and I need you so much. You gave me my chance for motherhood, my health, my life. You were wrong, you didn't know. Please, please come back, we need you. Samantha Emily needs you, and you are her father." May 2001 Scully was in her apartment with Samantha. She had named her in honor of Mulder, and her middle name in honor of Emily. Emily was still a wound that struck her down, and watching Samantha enjoy herself in her crib brought tears to her eyes. If only Mulder would return, if only she could see his face, and show him his daughter. She picked Samantha up, and held her. "Your daddy would be so proud of you, Sam. I know he would be. I just have to find him for the both of us. He's the most wonderful man I've ever known. What would I do with out both of you. I must make sure you are alive when he returns. I've seen men sneak around our building, it frightens me. I could lose my only link to Mulder." Samantha had brown hair just like her father, but she had the strong blue eyes of her mother. Scully stared into them for comfort she knew the child could not really give to her. This child was the most beautiful thing in her life now, and she protected Samantha with her own life. She had gone on her own thoughts, not wanting to do so, but being unable to stop herself. What would she do if she had found him dead? She wouldn't think of that, until the time came. . .if it did. She held Samantha close, and let a small tear fall. Nearly a year since she had lost Mulder. Lord only knew where he was. She didn't, and wondered if she ever would. The phone rang, and Samantha burst into a wail. Scully sighed, and put Samantha down, so she could answer the phone. She said exhaustedly, "Scully." Skinner's voice came over the phone, "We found him, Scully. He's alive, and unconscious at the Washington Hospital. Meet me there, and bring Samantha with you." Scully had blanked out the rest, she had heard the three words she had been waiting for. 'We found him." She asked, "Where is he?" 10 Minutes later Scully took Samantha, placing her in the car seat she had put in her back seat. She had quickly driven to the hospital, finding Mulder's room almost immediately. She held Samantha Emily close to her, and when she stepped into Mulder's room, seeing him lay in bed moving, she hid her face in Samantha's shoulder. Skinner said, "We found him on the side of a road in Oregon. We thought it was best to take him here. They say he might not make it." Scully sat down in a chair that had been placed for her next to Mulder's bed. She held Samantha close, and watched Mulder's badly bruised face at rest. She saw that besides the oxygen mask, and the IV placed into his arms, many other wires had been into his body before he had been found. She said, "Sir, what did they do to him?" Skinner looked forlornly at Scully. He said, "We don't know, and right now making sure he lives is all that matters. I think if he should wake that you should be here. I know that he would like you to be." Skinner got up and left. He knew that Scully wished to be alone with Mulder. Scully had seen him go, but turned her attention towards Mulder. A small golden object glimmered from around his neck. Her cross. She remembered giving it to him before he left on that fateful night nearly 1 year ago. "Mulder, I know you don't want me out there with you. I don't want you to go alone." She had said to him. "Scully, I know that you're afraid. They won't do anything to me. I wasn't abducted, you were. They'll do so much more to you than they will to me." Mulder had whispered into her ear. "I can't let you go." She remembered getting upset, "Mulder, I don't want you to go either! You'll get hurt some how, and I won't have anybody anymore." Mulder had kissed her, passionately. He broke it off. He looked deep into her afraid blue eyes with his intense green eyes. "Scully, I promise that I will come back to you. I love you with all of my being. I WILL come back to you." Scully had unhinged her cross from around her neck. She had whispered softly, "Mulder, I want you to wear this. If you do go up there, to the alien space craft, you'll have this to remember me by." Mulder said, "No, no, Scully. You need this more than I do." Scully's eyes had welled up with tears. She still had it offered to him in her left hand. She said, "Mulder, please. I want you to have it, I want you to be able to remember something in that horrible bright white place." Mulder said, "Scully. . ." Scully hushed him by placing a finger over his lips, and clasping it onto his neck. She had then kissed him. After she had kissed him, she said, "Mulder, promise me never to take that off until you return to me. You will return to me, I know it in my heart." Mulder had said into her ear, "I promise, I will return to you, and by that same promise I will never take this off." He held up the glowing gold of her cross that was now on his neck. Mulder gave her one more kiss. He smiled regretfully, and with one little sigh had turned on his heels and left her standing there. It was the last time she would see him for a year. Scully now looked at him. He had kept both promises, now if only God would answer her prayers. That he would be able to stay with her, and the child that she had. She had so much to tell him, and no time to do it in. As she sat watching, Melissa appeared, standing on the other side of the bed. She said, "Dana, I assure you that he'll be alright. Fox Mulder is a strong man, with such a strong woman. Don't worry, but do be careful going home. There are men who will follow you home. Lose them, they want to know who you came to visit. Emily will guide you the way to take." Scully nodded. She said, "I'm ready to do that. Mulder will be okay, and so will Samantha. I will follow Emily. Thank you Missy." Melissa smiled at her younger sister. She said, "Go, before they wonder what you really had been doing here." Missy then disappeared. A nurse came in and said, "Miss, visiting time is now over. I've been asked that you leave." Scully got up, placing a kiss on Mulder's forehead. She said, "Fox Mulder, there's nothing more than this to my life. Please return to me. I'll be back later. I love you." When she got out to the car, she saw the men Missy had spoken about. She got in placing Samantha in the car seat. She got into the car, and started the engine. She saw Missy point to the right, and Scully saw the alley that she should take. Scully did so, and at the end, Emily pointed the way to take from there. It lead to a hide out, and there Scully parked her car. Emily came into the car, and said, "Mommy, these men will continue on. When I give the signal over there, take a left. Then drive home as usual, we'll keep on the outlook for the men to track you." Scully throughout the years had seen Emily fewer times than Missy. She still had tears in her eyes each time Emily came, but she brushed them away. She did so at Emily's direction, and drove home without danger. Scully's Apartment Scully opened her door, holding the sleeping Samantha as she entered. She went to the bedroom, where she had placed a crib for Samantha. She said, "Good night, Samantha. You will make your father the most proud man of all time. I know you will." Samantha had sighed in her sleep, and rolled over. Scully smoothed a strand of hair from her daughter's face. Samantha had more hair than the ordinary baby, and Scully loved how soft it felt. She smiled down at her daughter, and placed a blanket over her. Scully got ready for bed after that. She wanted to rest, and let things slide into nothingness. Mulder was back, and things were beginning to turn around. She hoped he would still be there in the morning. The next morning Scully woke up to the phone ringing. It was Skinner again, and he said, "Mulder is awake, he's asking for you." Scully said tiredly, "I'll be there, tell him I may take awhile, but not why. I want to tell him about Samantha." Skinner said, "I will." They hung up, and Scully dragged herself out of bed. She got up, getting dressed, and found herself smiling. She would finally hear Mulder's voice for the first time in one year. She would also be able to show Mulder what love could do with Samantha. She picked up Samantha from her crib, hoping that she would not fuss. , she thought.to herself, Mulder, you had been so wrong. You have been so wrong. She smiled into Samantha's eyes, and said to her, "You're going to meet your daddy." As she left a man watched her from a black sedan. He was watching her walk to her car, and knew that he had to keep tabs on her comings and leavings to her apartment. Someone else would follow her. He coordinated with the other man that she had left. The other man took it, and as soon as Scully pulled out of the apartment building parking lot, the man in a different black sedan took after her. Scully drove, knowing that these mysterious men were behind her. They were not as good at hiding as they thought. Scully decided to take them for a joy ride, knowing that losing them would be the best, if only she could keep Mulder's return a secret. She said, "Sam, hold on, we're going to lose some bad men here." Scully turned roughly into the alley behind a building in D.C. The very same alley Emily had pointed out the night before, and took it. She whipped around the corner, and found the sedan following just barely. She then took a swift right, losing the sedan successfully. Scully said, "I did it, I lost those men. Let's go see your father before he gets impatient." When she had finally gotten to the hospital, she took Samantha up as quickly as possible. She could hear her heels clicking soundly on the hard floors of the hospital as she rushed to see the one man who meant everything to her. When she got to his room, she heard Mulder's voice for the first time in a year. "Sir, how is Scully? I know that I've been gone for a while. How long have I been gone?" Mulder's voice asked horsely after not using it for what Scully thought was a year. Skinner said, "A year, Agent Mulder. Last May you were taken by something I cannot explain. Agent Scully has much to tell you." Mulder said, "Is she going to be here soon?" Scully walked in with Samantha. She said, "I can answer that, Sir." Mulder looked at Scully, and then Samantha. Skinner saw the looks pass between them. He said, "I think I'll talk with you more later Agent Mulder. Agent Scully has pressing information." Scully took the chair she had used the night before. She had learned how to maneuver with Samantha in her arms, so she did not hand the baby over to him. Mulder simply asked, "When did you get the baby? Scully looked down into Samantha's eyes. She then looked up into Mulder's dark green, locking hers with his. She said, "I gave birth to her in October. I named her Samantha Emily Mulder. You were so wrong, Mulder. My vertigo, it was this pregnancy. You and I conceived her in April. She's your child." Mulder was shocked. He said, "That. that's our baby?" He looked so afraid to hold the child, but Scully put the child into his arms. She said, "She needs to know what her father is like. She needs to be held by you. Mulder, men have been following us. They followed us here, hopefully I lost them. I don't want them to know that you are back, they might try to kill you before you're strong enough." Mulder asked, "Scully, does Skinner know who's child this is?" Scully shook her head. "Her birth certificate is sealed with your name on the father line. We had blood tested with your's and with Samantha. You are her father, and I've kept it silent until now, and of course with her." Mulder said, "This gets out, and they will reassign us in a flash. Scully, how can you have a child? You're barren, aren't you?" Scully didn't know how to respond. Samantha began to cry, and Mulder was startled by the child's wails. Scully got up, taking Samantha from him. She cradled her, and said, "Sh, things will be okay, don't worry. Hush, we're going to be all right." Mulder watched as Scully held his child. A year had changed everything. She was a mother, she seemed so different, yet so much the same. She calmed the child down with out much effort, and then sat down. Maybe it was just simply his imagination that was making him think this way. Scully's eyes looked more experienced then when he had last seen her. He noticed that they were harder, yet deep down they were softer than ever. Samantha had made Scully seem more of a woman, and stronger for it too. Mulder knew that for a year without him, she had to keep herself alive, through her pregnancy, and after. She must have had many instances where death nearly came to her or to Samantha. Scully said, "Mulder, do you remember anything from when you were gone?" Mulder simply shook his head. He didn't remember much. Time would show him everything he needed to know. A week later Mulder was released from the hospital. He hadn't walked into his apartment in more than a year. He noticed that it was clean, and thought to himself, Scully must have cleaned it for me. He walked around the apartment, looking around. He saw his answer machine blink. He walked over to it, and pressed the button. The first message had been from Scully. Scully's voice came out into the room. "I know you can't hear me. I know that you didn't want me out there, and I know you think it was because I was abducted that I reacted that way, and that also I was in danger from that. You were wrong, Mulder, so wrong. I'm pregnant, and I know that you can't hear me tell you that, but I thought that while I sat home doing nothing, I'd call and hear your voice, boy do you need to change your answer machine message. Just a thought. What are you seeing? Is there some strange truth you are seeing? Are they doing terrible tests on you? Mulder, those tests are evil. . . . I'm not going to tell you who the father of my baby is while you are gone. It's just to dangerous. I'm starting to run out of time, so I'll say bye now, I love you always." Mulder pressed stop. He wasn't ready for the next message, if he was even ready for that one. He waited a moment, and pressed the button. Frohike's voice came over the speaker, "Mulder, I know you are not home, but the boys said to call. We miss you so much. When you get this message, please pay us a visit." The next message frightened him. He heard, "Scully, we know you are there. We suggest that you get out of there." Scully had picked up the phone, leaving the answer machine to record. "Listen, I'm not going anywhere. I'm not doing anything wrong." The man who had called said, "We will be up in a few moments, if you want to live, and if you want to be able to have that child, we suggest you leave now." The Cancer Man's voice came over the phone, "Agent Scully, remember that chip in your neck makes you able to have this child." Scully spat into the phone, "If I had never been abducted, I wouldn't have that problem, nor would I have your God Damn Fucking Chip! Go rot and die you Smoking Son of a Bitch! Scully slammed the phone down, and the machine beeped. Mulder couldn't take any more messages for the night. He prepared for bed, and wished that Scully hadn't had to go through something like that. Her last year had been rough. Mulder fell into a fitful sleep. Mulder saw himself on a table, naked except for a towel placed over his lower half. He saw nothing but white, until a group of men walked in. Some were not men, but were actually alien. He looked around nervously, knowing that he could not escape. Mulder saw a woman's face above his. Diana Fowley's face. She said, "Fox, relax, this will not hurt a bit, just be calm." A few moments later, he felt something so horrible pierce him, and he screamed. He screamed so loud, and so hard that before he was consumed by the blackness that took him over, he had screamed himself hoarse. The blackness enveloped him, and he could no longer feel the terrible things that had hurt him before. Later on, he had woken up in a small cell, alone, and dressed. He had a small robe on, and he could see that it had been hastily put on. Mulder also found himself restrained. A sobbing woman drew his attention from the next cell. She was sobbing loudly, and a man was with her. She said, "Don't test him so, he's not ready for the most horrible tests yet. Go easy, please." A man said, "He's no different than anyone else. He's got to be like everyone else." The sobbing woman said, "Why can't you just go easy on him, just for now." Mulder heard the man's reply, but not the woman's name. "Because, we can't do that, Samantha." Mulder then heard no more sobbing or conversation. He felt something fall on him though. It was a blanket. A man said roughly, "Rest, it only gets worse from here. Believe me." Mulder woke up screaming, and he asked, "Who was that woman? Is that where I was for a year? What did they do to me?" He looked over at his clock, it read 4:27 A.M. Mulder attempted going back to sleep, knowing he must talk with Scully in the morning. Mulder found himself unable to sleep. He laid back on his couch with an arm behind his head. He scratched his neck, feeling a small bump. He started to pick at it, and blood began appeared on his finger. He felt pain, and as he touched the bump, it dawned on him it was an implant placed in him. This frightened him, fearing they had done so much more to him. Mulder grew very worried. He sat up on his sofa, picking up a note pad. He made notes of all that he had see in his dreams, and he would have to be checked for the implant, only Scully could check that for him. Once that was done, he could slip into a sleep. The next morning, he got up, dressing himself, preparing to go to work. He hadn't done that in more than a year. So many things had changed. He hoped Scully had not allowed anyone to be partnered with her. Before he could leave, a phone message came over the machine, "Mulder, it's me. Don't go to work. They'll know, and Skinner said that it'll be best if we met alone., before you come back to work. Met me at the corner of the Lincoln Memorial. We can talk there." When Mulder got there, Scully said, "Leave your car, and get into mine." Mulder did so, finding Scully different. After he got in, he asked her about it. "Scully, why are you acting so?" Scully said, "Do you see that sedan over there? Keep yourself braced. I'm going to lose them. They must have found me. Look in the back seat, Sam's with us." Scully with screeching tires pulled away. She saw the sedan pull after her, tailgating. It was time to lose the idiots working for Cancer Man. Mulder watched as she deftly out maneuvered the man. She put her left signal on, and intended on turning right. The sedan did as she had planned. It turned left, too late in it's turn to remedy the mistake. Scully said, "Now, we hide somewhere while they search." Mulder asked, "Where did you learn that? The F.B.I. doesn't teach that." Scully said, "Shut up, Mulder. I learned it from experience. Samantha needs me to be able to do these things." Mulder never expected her to be that harsh. They sat hiding for a while, and Scully said, "They should be lost on our tracks by now." Mulder asked, "Scully, do you still feel the same way? I heard the phone message you left me a year ago. Is that true?" Scully looked down, her eyes shaded from him by flame red hair. She looked up, saying, "Yes. I prayed for your safe return, and prayed that Samantha would still be there for you, waiting for you. I love you still. Oh, Mulder, how I've missed you." Scully allowed her hard exterior that she had kept up all the while Mulder had been gone, fall. Tears fell down her cheeks, and she said, "Mulder, my two things that kept me alive were finding you, and Samantha. I. . ." Sobs escaped her now, and Mulder reached over, pulling her into a strong embrace. He wasn't sure how she would take it. She wrapped her arms around his body, even if it was an awkward position. She sobbed long into his chest, and he knew that the year he had been gone had been her hardest. Scully pulled away, her blue eyes rimmed red now. She said, "Mulder, I love you with all I've got. Do you still love me?" Her red rimmed blue eyes questioned his deeply, hoping that the right answer would be there. Mulder without even thinking said, "I love you more than ever. You are my life, and so is Samantha Emily." He kissed her, tasting her for the first time in a year. He wasn't ready to tell her about his nightmare, or his possible implant. He felt Scully's mouth open, almost longing for his. God, Mulder, why wouldn't she? Mulder began to hear something, and it sounded like Scully. She was kissing him, yet he heard her speak. Scully was thinking at that moment, God, I love this man. I wish I could kiss him forever. Mulder broke off the kiss, and heard a silent, Damn. What was happening? Did he actually hear her think? Scully asked, "What's wrong, Mulder?" Mulder shook himself, and said, "I don't know. It's nothing, I guess." He kissed her again, and Scully said after she broke it off, "We can work this out. I understand." Mulder looked shocked. He said, "It's not that! I love you, I just thought I heard something." Scully said, "Okay." He kissed her again, feeling a link between him and her go up. She was running a hand over the back of his neck, and had found the implant he had thought to be before. She pulled away, feeling the implant in her own. She looked at Mulder with wide eyes. "They, they did that to you too? They put one of those chips in you!" Mulder grew afraid now. He was hearing her thoughts, and now knew that he had one of those implants in him. What would be next for them? A week later Mulder still slept at his apartment alone. Scully said that it would be the best for them to sleep apart for now. The men were watching her every move, and she didn't want Mulder to be placed into a dangerous situation. Not when she just got him back. Mulder fell asleep, and fell into another dream, this one revealed much, much more than the previous one had. Mulder found himself on the cold table once more. He heard men discuss how they would make his brain more able to handle the telepathic transmissions than he had the last time. They would also put him under horrible tests to train him into his new powers. Mulder had a lot of trouble going for him now. They stuck electrodes into his brain, by roughly inserting them through his scalp. Mulder howled out in pain as he felt the needles feed into his brain. Just as he had done in the fall, Mulder began screaming like a mad man, and thrashed under his straps. The noise that had driven him mad had returned, and this time no one was going to stop it. He felt something hard hit him on the side of the head, sending him into unconsciousness. The men were now inserting more wires, and he only screamed once. They were adapting his brain to become more powerful, and easier to train to do these things. Again he woke in a room with nothing but restraints on his wrists, and a gown to keep him warm. If you could call it warm. This time though, his cell door opened, and a small woman walked in. His eyes were too glazed to tell who it was, and he could not think beyond the thumping headache. The woman knelt down, opening his eyes, he had shut them, fearing they would take him back to that horrible cold table, where they stuck him over and over. The woman said, "Fox, things will get easier. Don't fight them, they like feisty victims. Things will be okay. I love you. Please don't fight." Samantha Mulder got up, leaving her brother to be put to bed for the night. His sister as soon as she had stepped out, began to cry. She shouted to the men who had watched her, "He's a man for Christ's sake, treat him like one!" Mulder woke up, screaming again. This time they were subjecting him to terrible, horrible tests for his brain. They were making him a telepath against his own will. Who was this woman? He did not know her. Or maybe he did? Mulder's apartment Mulder had invited Scully over, and Scully finally after weeks having him back gave in. The men would know that he was back by now, no matter how much she had hid it. She had taken Samantha with her, and insisted that the crib she had go in Mulder's bed room. Scully was not going to take any chances with their daughter. Mulder obliged, wanting only to have her over. She would spend the night, and though the F.B.I. frowned on such things, she knew that as they had before hid it from them, they could do so again. What did it matter now? Mulder said, "Sit, I thought we could talk. I want to know more about what you've been doing?" Scully did as asked. She sat down. "Mulder, I've done a lot. I've learned how to survive, and I've learned how to raise a child that needs to be under 24 hour surveillance, only because I am. I don't think Skinner knows who the father is, but who ever is following me does." She paused. "Mulder, I don't want to do this on my own anymore. I don't have to. We need to do this together. Be partners again." Mulder nodded. He took her hand, how small it was, and saw the scars that were on his hands stand out. He had noticed them shortly after going home, but didn't think much of them. Now he wondered what had just happened to him. Would he dream tonight, as he did some? He looked into her eyes, searching for the Scully he knew a year ago. He found a glimmer of what he thought to be that loving woman he had known. She had changed so much, but she had done so much for the both of them while he had been gone, Lord only knows where. Scully caught him, and she said, "Mulder, I haven't changed, not towards you. I still love you, nothing changes that. That's what kept me alive for so long." Mulder still had her cross. He unlatched it, and in his right hand offered it to her. "Scully, take this. I want you to have it back." Scully's eyes welled up. She could only see gold now, a blur to her tear filled eyes. She shook her head. She took his hand, closing the fingers over the chain. "Keep it, Mulder, keep it." Mulder didn't know why she had said this. He asked, "Scully, why? I know how much this means to you." Scully's fiery red hair once more hid her face from him. She didn't know if she could clasp that cross around her neck again, knowing that Mulder had come back to her wearing it. What if he would need it to restore his memory once more? They could take him again. Scully said, "Keep it. I want you to keep it, so if anything should happen, you will be able to remember me by it." She cried then, letting herself be out in the open. Mulder clasped it back around his neck. He hugged her, saying, "I think it's time that we get some sleep. We must." Scully nodded, and Mulder said, "Should we take the bed?" Scully said, "Yes, I want good memories right now. We made love in that bed for the first time. That's where Samantha came from." Mulder smiled. He could remember that night, where sex was not just sex, it was love, and it may be the next step, but it was more. He climbed in, waiting for her. Scully had made sure that Samantha was tucked in her crib, and said to her, "Daddy and I are going to sleep now. We will see you in the morning, things will be okay." Mulder asked softly, "Do you always talk to the baby?" Scully got in the bed, and nodded. She pulled the covers, and faced away from him. She whispered then, "She was all I had to talk to, even before she was born. She and I talk all the time, she listens, I talk." Mulder wrapped his arms around her, much as he had done in Oregon a year ago. "Scully, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have left." Scully's tears soiled her hair. Mulder whispered, "So much has changed. Scully, you're the same, yet you're so different. What did they do to you?" Scully turned over in his arms. She asked, "What did they do to you, Mulder?" She buried her head in his chest. "You were so foolishly wrong in so many ways. You told me my life was so much more. When you left, I had nothing but your child. It was always YOU. You were wrong about me being barren, and what they had taken away from me. They wanted me to leave you, I can't and that's the truth. You were so wrong." Mulder said, "I'm sorry. I didn't know. I thought that it was because of me." Scully looked into his troubled eyes. They were like a mad green sea, holding so many emotions at once, and she wished she could understand what they had done to him in that bright white place of evil. Mulder kissed her forehead. He said, "It's time we go to sleep, or we will never get any." Scully kissed him back, and snuggled into his chest more. Mulder fell asleep contented. He had the woman he loved in his arms, and the child that was his, lay in a crib across the room. The four words that had repeated in his mind, coloring it darkly though were 'You were so wrong.' He wondered how much more was wrong. Mulder was on that table again. Yet this time he was dressed, and sat upright. Four televisions had been placed in front of him, facing away from him. He looked around for what would happen to him next. Once again, the men walked into the room, and Diana was with them She walked up to Mulder, and looked to see his reaction, now that he would not be stuck with things. She said, "Fox, you are going to be tested to see how this is working on your mind. We want to see if you are capable of what you were last fall. This may hurt, but it won't be as bad." Mulder struggled against restraints. He asked, "Why? Why are you doing this to me?" Diana did not answer, but did give a signal. A helmet came down, clamping down on Mulder's head. Thousands of needles punctured his scalp, and he screamed. A woman ran into the room. She said, "You can't do this! He's not ready for it!" Men forced the woman back, and screamed, "Don't fight, let them go and test you! It'll be worse if you fight it, Fo. . ." Mulder looked forward then, his eyes defiant to what they subjected him to. He refused to let himself scream, and bit his lip, not allowing the scream to escape. Scully meanwhile saw Mulder thrash in the bed. She knew he was dreaming, and it meant he was now remembering what had happened while they had him. What horrible things had they done to him? She shook him, but it did not work. She knew that the dream had to work it's way through on it's own, or the memory would not be complete. Mulder had done the tests flawlessly. Just as he done in the fall, he had gotten every single screen right, and even before the picture would be sent to that screen. Diana watched as he grew powerful. When the helmet came off of his head, he screamed once, then bit his lip again. He refused to let them get the satisfaction that they had gotten before. When he got into his cell, he asked in a commanding voice, "I'd like to talk with the woman who came in during the testing." He was allowed this. The woman walked in, and Mulder saw her for who she was for the first time. She sat down, in a gown not much different than his. Mulder asked, "Is that you, Samantha?" Samantha nodded. She said, "Yes. They took me, they took me to make me like you now. They want you to be telepathic like me. I was taken to the ship, and when you found that diary, I had been captured before the Smoking Man could get a hold of me. I was to become a weapon. Fox, they want you to be one too. They plan on sending you back, we will become a team once you remember me. A child, your child will be needing us." Mulder said, "How did you know?" Samantha touched Scully's cross. She said, "I saw her give it to you. I have been trained to be telepathic for years. I was trained to pick up your mind. She's pregnant with your child. It will be difficult, but once we win, I can come back to you." Mulder woke up, screaming. Scully asked, "What did they do? What did you see?" Mulder said, "Samantha. She and I are telepathic. They forced us to be. The tests, they were horrible. I, I hate them." He sobbed into her shoulder. She held him, and said, "They are done, and they won't do them to you ever again." Mulder wrapped his arms around her. He said, "They did this to her. They took her up there, and forced her to do those for years. She can't come back to me for a very long time. She said we are to commune telepathically together, and that she knew you were pregnant with our child." Scully looked shocked into Mulder's eyes. She saw fear in them, and knew that the terrible tests were what he feared for Samantha. She knew that he had been chosen to do this, as she had to watch the child they had. A week later Scully had let Mulder in the apartment. He took a look around the room, and saw that not much had changed. He sat down on Scully's sofa, and watched as she took care of the baby. His baby. Scully then put the baby in the crib, allowing her to sleep, while Mulder and her talked. Mulder smiled as she sat down. He said, "You really do make an excellent mother, did you know that?" Scully smiled. She said, "I try my best. I really do. I don't know what is next, except that I do not want to raise a child all by myself." Mulder said, "That's understandable. I want to be her father in every way. You didn't really explain how this happened." Scully felt her stomach sink. She had figured that it had been that chip, and Cancer Man said the same thing, but as far as medical information, there was none. She was curious as to how this could be. Scully sighed, and she said, "Mulder, I think it's because of that chip. The chip they put in me when they abducted me. You can't remove that, or something terrible will happen to you." Mulder asked, "What did the doctor's say?" Scully didn't know how to answer this question in any capacity. She said, "The doctors didn't know what to say to me. They couldn't explain it, and I only have that chip to go on." Mulder said, "Oh." He was about to ask another question, but Scully was off in space. Scully saw Emily standing by the bedroom door. She said, "Mommy, Samantha is in danger. Come into the room." Scully to Mulder's amazement got up, grabbing her gun. She ran to the door to the bedroom, and threw the door open, screaming, "F.B.I.! Freeze!" Krycek had been picking the baby up, intending to abduct the child, and as Scully screamed, he said, "How did you know I'd be here, Scully?" Scully screamed, "Shut up! PUT MY DAUGHTER DOWN! DO IT!" Krycek began to put the child down, but he snickered to Scully. Mulder was standing in the background, his hands grabbing his head. All the thoughts in the room were getting to him. Krycek said, "I see Mulder is back. It's good to know. He doesn't look so hot." Scully said, "Fuck you! You bastard, you just get out of here now! Leave us alone!" She had the gun trained on him. He said, "Remember, I'll be back, and you won't be so lucky next time." Scully spat as he left, and ran to check Samantha, and then to Mulder. She led Mulder to the bed, and laid him down. She then said, "Mulder, what's wrong?" Mulder muttered, "Too. . .Too many thoughts." Scully said, "You can hear my thoughts?" Mulder nodded. He pulled up in pain on the bed, his teeth finding his lower lip. He still refused to scream and give them the satisfaction. Scully said, "Mulder, listen to me. You have to focus, focus on me. I want you to know what I'm thinking. That way you have only my thoughts, and not too many others." Mulder nodded, his eyes closed. He then focused on Scully's thoughts. Scully thought, Mulder, please don't get sick like you did that fall. I couldn't take that after you were gone for so long. Please. Mulder formulated a thought in his own mind. It connected with Scully. I'm going to be fine. I just need to learn how to stop hearing thoughts when I don't want to hear them. I'll do it. Scully's eyes widened. She said, "I heard you. You, you talked to me telepathically." Mulder smiled weakly up at her, before sleep took him. It had taken all of his energy. Later that night after Mulder had woken up, Scully said, "Mulder, I want to talk." Mulder said, "I do too. How did you know that Krycek was there?" Scully said, "Krycek? I knew he was there, because. . . Emily, she told me to go into the room, that Samantha was in danger." Mulder said, "Emily?" Scully nodded. She didn't know how to tell him the next part. She fidgeted with her hands in her lap. Mulder turned her face towards him. He said, "You can see the dead relatives. Can you see my mother?" Scully shook her head. She had tears in her eyes, knowing how much it hurt him to lose his mother. She said, "I see Emily, and I see Missy. They helped me the other day dodge the men who were tracking us. I've seen them since you left. They have guided me." Mulder said, "Oh. Next time you see them, tell them thank you for keeping you and Samantha safe." He really wanted to talk one more time with his mother. Wished he could ask her about the last thing she had wished to talk about. Mulder said, "What did you want to talk to me about?" Scully looked into his green eyes, her eyes full of questions. She said, "Did they make you able to be telepathic?" Mulder nodded, regret filling his beautiful green eyes. He said, "Scully, my sister is up there. She helped me to be strong, and she helped me to do the tests to make me this way. Yes, they did this to me. Each dream brings a memory back to me. I hate them for this awful new existence." Scully took his hand. She said, "Mulder, it's not awful. In fact, you said so yourself, you and your sister will commune now." She had squeezed his hands, giving him the reassurance he needed. Mulder gave a small smile of regret. He said, "They say to live life with no regrets. Why do I regret so much? I left you when you were pregnant with our child to defend yourself. I left my sister in hell. She's up there, suffering what ever they wish her to endure. In that fucking white place, with the men who stick so many things in you to make your brain hear every other person's thought. I hate it. I hate it so much, and they could take me and fuck me over any time they wish to do so." Scully was frightened now. She hugged him. Mulder wrapped his arms around her, his tears finally spilling. She said, "They were horrible to you. I hate them too, but they did so much less to me. They did." Mulder hid his face in her shoulder. He wept, his voice choked with emotion, "They took her when she was 8 years old, and forced her to do those horrible monstrous tests. They subjected her to the wires, and they forced her to be a freak before she could grow up and be a person." Scully said, "Sh. You'll get her back from that. You will." Mulder wept. He said, "I don't know anymore. I don't know if I'll ever see her again, I may hear her, but I may never see her again. Only if they take me to that place, that place of hell." Scully said, "You will, you can't give up on her, you can't give up on me. Missy taught me that. I did this all for you and for Samantha, both of them. Mulder you have to be strong for all of us. We are going to be able to do this, no matter what anyone says." Mulder said, "I hope you are right." He laid back, and pulled Scully down. He kissed her, and said, "Scully, let's sleep. I missed you those nights in that cell. I want to just hold you, so I know you are real." The next morning, Scully's phone rang. She woke up, and groaned. She had spent the night on Mulder, and now she didn't really feel like moving. She sighed, picking up the phone and answering it. "Scully." Skinner's voice came over the line, saying, "Scully, word got out. They know that Mulder is back. Do you know where he is by any chance? He didn't answer his door, nor his phone." Scully said, "Sir, I. . ." She didn't know how to answer this question, but Skinner made things easier for her. She was thinking of something to say, when he took over the conversation. "I think I know where he is. Agent Scully, will you and Mulder please come to my office A.S.A.P. I want to talk to you first, alone. Then we'll bring in Mulder to fill him in, okay?" Scully said, "Yes, sir, but I thought that you'd want to see him right away." She didn't want to leave Mulder in the dark about anything, and she had a funny feeling that it was because he thought the father of her child was some one different, and he didn't want to hurt Mulder's feelings. Scully said, "I'll be there as soon as I can. Don't worry, I'll get a hold of Mulder, and if I may, I will be bringing Samantha with me. I had a scare last night with Krycek, but I don't want to speak about it on a possible unsecured line." Skinner said, "That is understandable. I'll be seeing you soon. Tell Mulder that it's urgent." Scully hung up the phone, and sighed. She said, "Mulder, Skinner just said we have to be at a meeting. I think it might be bad. Krycek, that bastard. He spread the word that you're back." Mulder kissed her, and said, "Well, I guess I have to go back to my basement. You didn't clean that up, did you?" He gave her puppy dog eyes, and smiled at her. He knew that it was their office, and that even if her name was not on the door, as it should be, that he would have to put up with some of her wishes for the office. Scully glared at him, and said, "No. I spent my time sitting at your desk looking for a way to find you. I guess I better get dressed, and we'll stop at your place so you can change. Mulder looked down, noticing that he had wrinkled clothes, from sleeping in them, and allowing Scully to sleep on top of him. He got up after her, and said, "I want to take care of Samantha. You can get a shower, and I'll get her ready, okay?" Scully smiled. She said, "That would be nice. I hate having to rush through my morning because I have so much to do. That's really nice of you. Thank you." She walked out of the room taking her shirt off, and she peeked her head around the corner. She said, "The baby wipes are on the counter in the kitchen. Remember, I didn't volunteer." Mulder made a face, then said, "I'll do it. She's my child too. I should have to take care of her just as much as you do." He picked up Samantha., and placed her on the changing table. Samantha squirmed a bit, but she mainly watched his face with her blue eyes. Mulder said, "You have eyes just like your mother, did you know that?" He changed her without much of a problem, then got her into her outfit. He then held her, saying, "I bet your wondering who this strange man is. I'm your daddy. Yeah, now you're disappointed, aren't you? Daddy is not what you expected." Samantha just giggled at him, and Mulder sighed. He said, "You sure are just one silly baby, did you know that?" She pulled on his nose, her small hand trying to grasp it in her hand. Scully came out, toweling her hair off. She said, "You are just the picture of fatherhood. How did you ever get her changed so fast?" Mulder smiled up at Scully, Samantha on his lap. He said, "Just got that father's touch. I don't really know, but she's got a fascination with my nose." Scully giggled, and took Samantha. She held the baby, and bent down giving Mulder a kiss. She said, "I some how remember being fascinated by that nose too. Let's go, before we stay here all day, playing house. We have to get you changed for the work day, and then we have to go see what bad thing the F.B.I. is dishing out this time." Mulder smiled. They walked out the apartment, Scully's free hand in Mulder's. She said, "Mulder, boy do I wish I could just do this, but it's not going to happen. I couldn't just do that. It'd be so boring." Mulder chuckled, and watched Scully strap Samantha in the backseat. He then waited in the passenger seat for Scully to get in, and drive him to his apartment. Those men were there again, and it took no time for Scully to lose them. She then pulled up in front of Mulder's apartment. Scully said, "Take your own car. It's a better plan, and we'll then be less conspicuous." She got up, taking Samantha in with her. She wanted to make sure that Mulder did not go into his apartment, and end up with a bullet wound in his head. It did not appeal to her. They got up to his apartment, and found it safe. He grabbed a suit, and said, "I'll be quick. It doesn't take me all that long to shower. Wait here, and then we'll leave." Scully said, "Fine." She sat down on his couch, and held Samantha. She looked around, and noticed that the place was not much different than when he had left. She had kept it clean, but give Mulder a month, and that could all change. She waited for him to come out, and when he did, she smiled. Mulder modeled his suit for her. He said, "Scully, do I look better like this," and Mulder stood as if he was pondering something, "Or do I look better like this?" Mulder stood then as if he was surprised. Scully laughed. She said, "Neither. You look best when you're not trying to look good. Let's go. Skinner's probably getting impatient." They pulled up to the F.B.I. building. Scully watched Mulder exit his own car, and she smiled. They walked up to the elevator taking them to Skinner's office. When they got there, Skinner's secretary said, "Agent Scully, he's ready to see you. He told me that he would ask for Agent Mulder when he was ready to do so." Scully nodded, and walked into the office. Skinner stood up, and shook Scully's free hand. She said, "Thank you for letting me bring Samantha with me. What did you want to tell me without Mulder?" Skinner said, "I think you already know." Scully looked towards her boss. She waited for him to continue. "I've been asked to inform the F. B.I. panel on how you had a child while barren. I think we both know who the father is." Scully wondered in that instant if he knew. Skinner said, "I'm here to protect you. I know that you two on duty are the finest to walk in the Bureau. We can't lose such a pair as you. It's too dangerous. What I want you to tell me, off the record, is who the father of that child is." Scully said, "Sir, I. . ." She wasn't sure if she should disclose that information, after all, the F.B.I. would make it a living hell for her and Mulder, not to mention the Cancer Man. Skinner placed a hand on Scully. He said, "I'm your friend in this one. Don't worry, I'm on your side. That walking smoking stack needs to kiss some ass, and he needs to pay." Scully said, "It's Mulder. He's the father of this child." She looked down, hoping she hadn't made the worst mistake in years. She looked up, seeing Skinner's face. He said, "Trust me, I am on your side. I sort of figured that you and Mulder were romantically involved, but it never interfered with investigative abilities, why should I break a pair of agents who work so well. Now, the F.B.I. is going to get nitty gritty on the matter. I want you to know that I stand behind you two 100%. Of all the agents to gain respect, it's you two. Okay, so there is gossip, but it's not as if they have any proof. Tell me more about this Krycek incident of last night." Scully sighed. She said, "Sir, last night, I was talking with Mulder at my apartment. I put Samantha in her crib in my bedroom. I didn't want to disturb her, and not get any sleep. Mulder was sitting on my sofa, and we began to talk. We wanted to talk about our year past, and see what he remembered from being gone. I'll let him tell you about that. As we sat in the living room, I heard something coming from the bedroom. I got up, and took my weapon, preparing for someone to harm my child. When I got around the corner of the door frame, Krycek stood holding my child. Now that he had been caught, he didn't take my child, but threatened to return. Mulder had been standing behind me, and Krycek left satisfied, knowing that Mulder was alive and back. Somehow I think he either is trying to hurt us, and foil the Cancer Man's problem, or he's got his own agenda that means taking us out." Skinner nodded. He said, "That's very dangerous. I can see why you took your child to work today. I made the F.B.I. directors understand that much about your situation. I would like to discuss this further. Remember, I am your friend. I'm going to bring in Mulder now, and then we'll go from there." He called in Mulder, and Mulder walked in, with a look of disgust on his face. "Boy, I never want to sit in your waiting room again, Sir. " Skinner looked at Mulder quizzically. "Why would that be, Agent Mulder." Mulder said, "Oh, nothing sir." Skinner waited for Mulder to take a seat. After he did so, Skinner said, "Agent Mulder, I would like to know what you remember from your absence. I'm curious as to what you did while you were gone." Mulder said, "It's sketchy, but I remember tests. Long hard tests. Horrible tests. I remember men, and I remember wanting to go home." Mulder didn't want to mention that he had been made telepathic, nor did he want to talk about his sister. Not just yet. Skinner said, "I'd like a report by next week. An open file that you can keep adding to when you remember." Mulder nodded. He said, "Sir, can we discuss what you and Agent Scully discussed, or is that not permissable?" Skinner said, "I know that you are the father of this child. As I told Scully, I'm prepared to back you. Don't worry, I'm on your team." Mulder tapped into Skinner's thoughts, and said, "Good. I'm glad that you are." Skinner said, "I'm glad you agree. Mulder, did you have anything else to discuss. I want you to be prepared for a meeting with the rest of the F.B.I. soon. We can get through this." Mulder said, "Thank you, sir." They got up, and left. As Mulder passed the secretary, he shouted, "Will you stop looking at my butt!" The secretary was taken a back, because she was almost impossible to catch doing so. Scully had missed it, and she glared at the woman, then laughed at Mulder's comment. When they got out in the hall, she said, "Mulder, you almost gave yourself away there." Mulder said, "That's not the worst she's thought about, it's worse than one of those videos that aren't mine." Scully snickered. She took a hold of Mulder's hand, and said, "I think it's someone's nap time." Mulder looked over to see Samantha sleeping on Scully's shoulder. She looked so peaceful, and when they got to the basement, Scully said, "I hope you don't mind that I have a small crib in there for her." Mulder shook his head no. He said, "Of course it doesn't bother me." They stepped in the office, and closed the door. Scully said, "I know that they don't normally, if at all let babies come to the building, but Skinner has arranged that since no one can keep this child safer than me, that I must take her with me, it's been okayed. I would refuse to work otherwise." Mulder nodded. He leaned down and kissed her. He said, "It's good to be back here, it's real good to be back here." The next morning, Scully got a phone call. "Agent Scully, the F.B.I. directors would like to have a meeting with you. They say the baby must stay home, and that they would like for you to be prepared to answer the question of who the father is." Skinner said. Scully said, "Sir, what do I tell them?" She was very worried about this meeting. Who else would she tell them to claim for the father of her child? She sighed, and said, "I'll tell Mulder to watch the baby. Don't tell them that." Skinner said, "I won't. They will also ask you if you know the whereabouts of Agent Mulder." Scully sighed. She said, "Okay, I'll tell him to take the baby to his place. Samantha should be fine with that." Skinner said, "Okay, but I warn you that this could be bad." Scully said, "I know. I'll be there soon." After they hung up, Scully swore, "Shit, they'll find out about Mulder and I. That baby is just his spitting image, just female." She then picked up the phone, dialing Mulder's. "Come on, Mulder, answer." Mulder's groggy voice came through the phone, "Yeah." Scully said, "Come to my apartment, I have an F.B.I. meeting, it's about us, and who the father of the baby is. I want you to watch the baby, take her to your place." Mulder was awake now. He said, "I'll be right there. Don't worry." They hung up, and Mulder said to himself, "I don't want to lose everything I have. Please let things be okay." He got a suit out, and put it on. Who knows, he might need to go the F.B.I. building soon. He drove off to Scully's quickly. When he got there, he ran up the stairs to her apartment, and knocked softly. He waited for her to answer, and when she did, she said, "Mulder, come on in." She checked around the hall, checking for anyone who could have followed him. When she was satisfied, she kissed him, saying, "I don't want to lose you. I don't want to be split up." Mulder kissed her back, he said, "I won't let that happen to us. You go to that meeting, and I'll take the baby home with me. It's going to be fine, you'll see. We'll be able to stay together." She said, "I hope so. I better go and get this over with. Be careful. There is many people who want you and that baby dead. Keep our Samantha safe." She kissed him one more time, and then pulled away, leaving Mulder to get Samantha. When Scully got to the F.B.I. building, she prepared herself for getting into more trouble than she could ever before. Her child and Mulder depended on her now. She walked into the meeting room, and said, "Good morning, gentlemen." The men turned to face Scully. She looked poised, and determined. She sat down at the chair designated to her. As she sat down, she saw the men who had asked her about Mulder's whereabout's nearly 3 years ago. The first question was, "Do you know the whereabouts of Agent Mulder, Agent Scully?" Scully said, "I should think he should be at his apartment, but I really do not know of his exact whereabouts." The panel asked, "Is the father of the child currently a part of your life, or is he not involved?" Scully said, "Involved. He's involved all the time." "Does he live with you?' "No. No he does not." "Is he an F.B.I. agent, such as Agent Mulder?" "He is.' "Is the father Agent Mulder?' "No." "Then who is the father?" Scully fidgeted slightly, and not even noticeably to the men. "I am not allowed to give his name out. " "Do you know his name?" Scully paused just briefly. She said, "Yes." The panel said, "Is the father Agent Mulder?" Scully wondered why they kept asking that. "No." They asked, going in a circle, "Do you know the name of the father?" Scully said, "Yes." "Is the father Agent Mulder?" God, are they just so fucking stupid that they have to be robotic? She said, "No. I already answered that question. Before this doesn't solve anything, and wastes all of our time, let's get past this." Back at Mulder's apartment, he sat holding the baby. He said, "Samantha, where did you come from? I leave, and Scully has no baby. I come back, and you are here. What happened?" Samanth simply giggled up at him. She smiled and looked so adorable at him. He smiled, "You are sure cute though. Very cute and adorable. Boy, you look a lot like me." Samantha giggled, and looked up towards Mulder, her fingers reaching up. Mulder picked up Samantha from his lap, and said, "What you reaching for?" Samantha swiftly grabbed Mulder's nose, trying to get a good grip on it with out much effort. Mulder laughed. "That's daddy's nose alright. I see you were blessed with your mother's nose." Samantha giggled, and Mulder flew her up in the air. He made air plane noises, and flew her around the room. When he looked past the child, a figure stood there. He put down the baby, and approached the figure. Melissa Scully said, "Fox Mulder, we finally meet since I've been on the other side. I think you should get to that meeting right now. It's important and crucial, take the baby with you. You are being watched by men sent by the men she is being questioned by." Mulder nodded. He said, "Thank you." Mulder grabbed the baby, and carried her out to the car. He said, "Hang tight, kiddo. Your mother needs us now." He drove quickly away, losing any one on his trail. One man did follow him, and Mulder knew that would get the men who questioned Scully into major trouble. They had sent men to spy on him and her, and they had done so illegally, sending them to perhaps kidnap or kill someone. When he got to the F.B.I. building, Mulder ran up to the meeting room, bursting through the door, and disregarding any one who stood outside the door preventing anyone from entering the meeting. The man who followed him did the same. Mulder saw startled looks from everyone. He said, "That man was sent by you to kill me. You were following us the whole time. You will be hearing from someone on this." The man who had been hired wasn't smart. He said, "I tried to stop him, Sirs." Only Skinner did not know of this conspiracy. Scully stood up, "I don't think you should be questioning me. This is in contempt of everything. I will not answer any of your questions anymore." After they had left the meeting, Scully asked, "How did you know that you were being followed?" Mulder said, "I saw Melissa. She told me to get here as quickly as I could." Scully's eyes widened. "I thought I only could see her." She looked towards Mulder in awe. She knew that Melissa could show herself to who she wished, but she also knew that Mulder with his new abilities could see her through that as well. Mulder heard her think What did they do to you, Mulder? Why did they do this to you, to us? Mulder said, "Because they have no heart, not like you, and they could have taken that from you, too." Scully said, "You, you heard me think again?" Mulder nodded. He said, "Let's go before something else happens. I don't want to get into more trouble than we may already be in." Scully said, "If anyone is in trouble, it's them. They were illegally watching us, plotting things against us." Mulder nodded. He took her hand, and held the baby. Scully smiled at him. She said, "So, was the baby good for you? I know that she can be fussy." Scully wondered what they had done. Mulder said, "Yeah, she sure likes my nose." Scully giggled. She said, "It's sure something that is cute. Your nose has always been cute." Mulder turned a bit red at that, but not much. "Let's go home." Scully said. "Home, where is home, Scully?" Mulder asked. Scully shrugged. "Where ever you think it is, Mulder." Mulder said, "I think my place is home, okay? Or would you rather stay at yours?" Scully said, "Let's see, orange juice from 1997, and food stains all over the floor, I think mine would be a much better choice for the baby." Mulder laughed. "You know me too well. Way too well." Scully said, "Not well enough. Not well enough." Mulder said, finally putting an arm around her as they got in the car. He had the baby seat in the back, and he leaned in giving Scully a small, quick kiss before putting Samantha there. Mulder then drove them to his place, and Scully said, "I hope those men get what is coming to them. They deserve to get it. They and Cancer Man. Okay, Krycek while we are at it." When they got home, they opened the door, and found Krycek standing on the inside. He smirked at them, and said, "Picked the wrong home, didn't we? Mulder knew the first move Krycek was going to make, from his mind. He jumped, and knocked Krycek to the floor. Krycek swore, "Holy Shit, Mulder where did you learn that?" Mulder said, "I think you know, and if you ever think 'I'd like to get in Scully's pants' again, I'll sock you so you won't." Krycek was frightened. Scully held Samantha. The child began to wail. She watched as Mulder anticipated all of Krycek's moves before he made them. Mulder was very angry right now. He kicked Krycek and growled, "Come near Scully and her child ever again, and I'll make sure that is the last day you have on earth. I won't kill you, I'll have you sent to Hell." Krycek got up, and spat on the floor. He said, "Hell, you don't know Hell." Mulder said, "I don't do I?" He placed his hands on Krycek's temples, his green eyes focusing into Krycek's. Krycek began to scream as an image of tests with wires and men who forced you to be slaves were. Mulder said, "Hell, you could find yourself there." Krycek ran, and Scully saw the frightened man leave. Mulder turned to her. He held a self-contempt in his eyes, as if he had succumb to what the men had wanted him to do. He walked slowly in, and began to sob, sitting down. Scully put Samantha down in her crib quickly. She ran to Mulder, and hugged him. Mulder said, "I did something so terrible. I forced him to see what I lived through, and I threatened to send him up there. Oh God, I'm a monster, Scully." Scully said, "No, he wanted to hurt us, you had no choice." Mulder held onto Scully for dear life. He sobbed into her shoulder, overcome with the emotion of guilt at knowing that he had gone through that, and told he'd send someone else to live that terrible life. A voice entered his head, and he became silent and unmoving. Fox, It's me. We are to begin working together. I want you to understand that what you did tonight had to happen. Krycek is your Judas. He wants to believe you, wants to help you, but he can't, not yet. Be careful. Fox, we'll pull through. Mulder sent his thought out, Sam, did those men get away with sending men to follow us? Samantha sent her thought back, No, no they didn't Fox. You and Scully can live any way you choose, but be careful. Marriage right now is not an option. Just keep living like you have been, it's a safety measure. Fox, things will be okay. We can do this. Scully and Samanth need you. When you go back to you apartment, there will be something for you to give to Scully. It's something for her to wear. It deals with the cross you received from her. Mulder said, Thank you, Sam. I love you. I love you too, Fox. When he opened his eyes, he was standing, and Scully looked frightened. He saw her frightened face, and heard her think, Oh God, what did they do to him? Mulder said, "They gave me my sister back. I get to talk to her telepathically. She said that there is something at my apartment for you." Scully looked surprised. "Mulder, how did you know?" Mulder said, "Just a guess. I know what you are thinking. I am a freak, aren't I?" Scully kissed him, and said, "Never. Never ever. I'll prove it to you that I don't think that." She kissed him, leading him to the bed room. Mulder followed, knowing that this was something beautiful, and not because he hadn't been satisfied. Making love with Scully was a beautiful experience. He knew that it would allow him to be human, more than ever before. The next morning, Mulder lay next to Scully. He woke up, and looked over to her smiling face. She looked so placid, and so happy. He brushed a strand from her eyes, and Scully woke to see him. She smiled up, and said, "Hey, good morning." Mulder smiled down at her. He said, "I think that's the first time I've seen you truly smile since I've come back. I really think it is." Scully said, "I guess I was just waiting for you. I missed you so much, in ever way." She placed her head on his chest, and snuggled up to him. "Oh Mulder, why can't we spend the rest of our lives together, just like the millions of people out there?" Mulder kissed the top of her head. "Because, it's not time. Sam and I are going to fix it. We'll get through this, and we can live any way we want to. That's if you will still want to do that." Scully lifted her head off his chest. "Yes. Yes I will love you then. Nothing can ever change that. I really truly think that. I could never stop loving you." Mulder leaned in, kissing her. "And I could never love any one as I love you." He leaned in, his forehead touching hers. "Do you want to see what my sister has left for you at my apartment?" Scully smiled into his eyes. She nodded, and said, "But we have to do this more often, this waking up with each other. I hate sleeping alone. I'll get dressed, and get the baby, what are you going to do?" Mulder said, "I don't know yet, probably get dressed. I'll go on from there. I really enjoyed last night. I want more nights like that." Scully smiled up into his face. She gave him a quick kiss. She then left to go and get dressed. Mulder watched as she left, then got up to get dressed himself. Scully came back out dressed. She said, "Mulder, it's going to be dangerous to get to your place. You know that, don't you?" She looked at him seriously. Mulder pulled up his pants, and said, "We can get there safely. Don't worry, who ever follows us will be in trouble." Scully said, "I hope you are right. I wouldn't want anything to happen to us, or the baby." She changed the baby, and got her dressed. Mulder watched in a pair of jeans, and hadn't put his shirt on. She looked like a mother so much to him. How one year away from her changes almost everything. God I love this woman. Scully picked up Samantha and said, "Let's go and see what your sister left me. I'm dying of curiosity." Mulder smiled, pulling a shirt over his head. He said, "Yeah, let's go. It's a good thing I left some of my clothes over here. I don't want to wear the same suit two days in a row." Scully smiled. "I bet not." They got out to the car, and Mulder drove them to his place. He found no one following them, and Scully got more nervous when no one followed them, than when they did. He pulled up in front of his building, and motioned Scully to go up the stairs to his apartment. He searched with his mind to find anyone around, and found no one in the area outside. Mulder followed Scully up the stairs to his apartment. She got there, and waited for him to unlock the door. He did so, and saw the note and object that was for Scully on the counter in the kitchen. He walked over to pick it up. Fox, Love always, Mulder picked up the small golden cross. He turned around. "This is from me. I had it made for you before I left the ship. I didn't want you to be cross less. You aren't to take this off. I'm not sure why just yet, but just don't." Scully looked towards the small golden cross. She reached up to it, and Mulder said softly, "Let me put it on." She allowed him to do this, and he kissed her. She said, "Thank you, Mulder. I'm glad that you had this made for me, now we have something for us to remember each other by. I'm so glad that you're back." Mulder said, "I want to get her out of there , but I need as much help as I can get. I know you'll help me. I know you will."
