Title: Metamorphasis Summary: A follow up to Completion. 5:00 A.M. on a Virginia Interstate This drive is the most pleasant in recent memory. "Pleasant is an understatement," Mulder says to himself. "This is a dream come true." Driving down the interstate during this hour before sunrise, there are few cars on the road. An occasional street lamp illuminates the inside of the car. And in the rear view mirror, Mulder catches a glimpse of a slumbering Scully snuggled up next to William, bundled in his car seat. They sleep peacefully together in the back seat. Mulder consciously decides to burn this image of contentment forever into his memory receptors. When he had been held captive aboard the alien vessel, Mulder would allow himself to escape in flights of fancy, just to survive and maintain his sanity. Never had he dreamt a dream that did not include Scully. But while on the ship, he never allowed himself to imagine himself with Scully and a child. He had given up on that particular dream when Scully tearfully confided to him that their only in vitro attempt resulted in failure. And yet, William is here, as real as real can be. He is indeed a miracle and living proof of the possibilities of miracles yet to come. Scully had, of course, always believed in miracles. And now, thanks to the two people he loves most in this world, he now believed in miracles, too. Off to the right, Mulder notices a road sign that says, "Virginia Beach 102 miles." Readjusting his tall, lanky body down into his seat, he increases the speed on the cruise control to about 78 miles an hour, anxious to arrive at their destination. Over the next hour, the sun rises and reveals a glorious, new day. Now, driving down the Virginia coastline, Mulder looks over to his left at the crashing waves along the shore. The sky is clear with just a few white, fluffy clouds. This is absolutely a perfect day, a perfect day in which to be married. They are now entering the city of Virginia Beach. Mulder continues driving down Coast Highway until he comes to the Shoreline Inn. He turns the car into the Inn's entrance and parks. Once the car stops and the ignition is turned off, William lets out a little whimper, which wakes Scully. "We're here," Mulder announces to his disoriented love. "And your Mom is already here, too." Mulder points to Margaret's car in the far parking lot. Scully smiles, as William's fussing increases. "Well, Momma, look who's ready for breakfast," Mulder quips in his best Daddy voice. "Why don't I stay here and feed William while you, check us in," Scully suggests. "Yeah, it will feel good to get us into a room, after this long ride," Mulder remarks as he exits the car door. He hesitates and returns to the car, opening the back car door. "Oh and Scully?" Mulder interjects as if he's forgotten something. "Happy Wedding Day." He leans over a nursing William, placing his hand gently on the babe's head and gives Scully a tender, lingering kiss. "Happy Wedding Day, Mulder," Scully flashes him another smile. ~fin~ (As it should be.)
