Title: The Beatles Files: 1. I Saw Her Standing There

Summary: Mulder and Scully at a party, years before the X-Files. This is in response to the challenge Deb issued... and my first post to the mailing list. *grin*

Easter 1980 London, England

'How did I end up here?' Dana Scully thought as she stood against the wall and watched people dancing to the music.

She remembered when her father had presented her with the tickets to London for her birthday which was also set over Spring Break. She had been delighted at the time, but right now she was feeling kinda dopey...jetlag always hit her hard, and she had only arrived in England this morning.

The music started up and Dana brushed back her hair, smiling at the song. The Beatles were still well loved in Great Britain, even five years after their breakup. She glanced down at her shoes and then watched as her friends went out onto the dance floor to dance with their dates.

1 - 2 - 3 - 4!
Well she was just 17
And you know what I mean
And the way she looked was way beyond compare
So how could I dance with another (ooh)
And I saw her standin' there

"Would you like to dance?" a soft voice drifted into her ears and she looked up to see a tall man with dark hair and hazel eyes looking at her with a slight smile on his face.

Well she looked at me, and I,
I could see
That before too long I'd fall in love with her.
She wouldn't dance with another (wooo)
And I saw her standin' there.

"Sure." Dana smiled, and he held out a hand She took it and walked out onto the dancefloor with him.

Well, my heart went "boom,"
When I crossed that room,
And I held her hand in mine...

He took her into his arms, but loosely held her It was more like they held hands and danced.

Whoa, we danced through the night,
And we held each other tight,
And before too long I fell in love with her.
Now I'll never dance with another (wooo)
Since I saw her standing there.

"You know, you dance really well." the stranger murmured.

Dana began to smile brightly.

"What's your name?"

"Fox..."

"Mine's Dana... though you don't look like a 'Fox'... you look more like a 'David'."

"That works. I think I like that." His smile seemed to melt a cold wall around his person.

"Nice to meet you, David." she smiled at him.

"Nice to meet you too, Dana." The mischevious gleam in his eye more than somewhat appealing.

Well, my heart went "boom,"
When I crossed that room,
And I held her hand in mine...

Whoa, we danced through the night,
And we held each other tight,
And before too long I fell in love with her.
Now I'll never dance with another (wooo)
Since I saw her standing there.

All too soon, the dance was over.

"Come on, Fox... let's go..." a smooth, seductive English accented woman's voice instructed The voice belonged to a tall, trim woman who seemed to ooze sensuality She obviously knew she had the power and used it for all it was worth, especially to control people, though the current subject seemed almost unwilling.

Almost as though he were under a spell or on a leash, he obeyed and followed, without another word.

"Thank you for the dance, David!" Dana called after him, but by then he and the woman were gone.

Dana yawned again and walked over to sit down where she half-dozed until her friends came and took her home.

30 March 1997
Washington, D. C.

"Thanks for joining me for lunch, Scully...." Mulder's smile suddenly sparked a memory... something from several years ago.

"Sure, Mulder... Ruby's is always fun Let me make a song request, will you?"

"Okay."

Scully studied the jukebox carefully and then dropped a coin in and selected her choice.

1 - 2 - 3 - 4!
Well she was just 17
And you know what I mean

"Well, David, care to dance?" she grinned at him.

For a moment, he froze, then remembered... the song bringing back many memories... especially one dance at a party... in London.

"That was you?"

"It was. Wanna dance?"

"Sure."

And they did...

Title: The Beatles Files: 2. For No One
Rating: G
Classification: Series
Spoilers: "Fire", but only because it involves Phoebe Green.
Comments and other things sent to me. are much appreciated.

Summary: A pre-X-Files story Mulder ruminates over how Phoebe Green ruined his life immediately after she dumps him. In the 'Beatles Files' universe, this comes after "I Saw Her Standing There".

Note: From the way Mulder acted in "Fire", it seemed as though Phoebe was more than somewhat abusive to him, so I decided to that that into consideration with this story.

Fox Mulder was doing what he had been doing for the past several days. Moping. The radio was on in his apartment. He'd even been ditching class. The song just starting made him wince. Far too many reminders of his current situation.

"Your day breaks, your mind aches You find that all the words of kindness linger on When she no longer needs you"

Phoebe Green, a woman whom he thought was going to be the love of his life... what a joke that turned out to be. She had stated flat out several days earlier that she didn't love him. In fact, she'd never loved him at all. She'd done this to see exactly how badly he could be completely screwed up. And she'd said so, then asked him to hold her.

She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you

What was worse? She had told him she didn't want anything more to do with him after... well... *he* had thought it was making love, but apparently to her, it had only been sex. Even if it hadn't actually gone that far. The incident on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's tombstone resulted in intercourse, certainly, but he hadn't exactly been willing.

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!

You want her, you need her
And yet you don't believe her when she said her love is dead
You think she needs you

She had played him for a fool right from the start. On a few occasions, she had even forced him to do a few things that made him nauseous, even though he didn't exactly say no. He hadn't been willing.

That was part of the problem with their entire 'relationship' as it was. He had lost his entire sense of who he was and did everything for her, which was why it hurt all the more when she decided it was over.

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!

You stay home, she goes out
She says that long ago she knew someone but now he's gone
She doesn't need him

Your day breaks, your mind aches
There will be time when all the things she said will fill your head
You won't forget her

He sighed. Of course he wouldn't forget her. The curse of the photographic memory, after all. A knock came at the door. "Mulder? Mulder, are you in there?" a woman's voice, not Phoebe, was on the other side.

There was a persistent knock at the door. But when he went to open the door, there was no one there. He could hear Phoebe's faint laughter and it made him sick.

The door kept knocking, even after he had just closed it. "Mulder, open the door," said a woman's voice. A very familiar woman's voice. Mulder jolted awake. The nightmare had not been his usual one. But he remembered the time in his life when what he had just dreamed had actually happened. Victoria Jensen, a close friend, had been at the door that time, though in the dream he'd found no one at the door, which made him feel even more alone.

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!

"Mulder! I don't know why you locked the connecting door. Please open it! I heard you crying... " a muffled woman's voice was heard. Sighing, he got up from the bed in the hotel room to answer the door. He'd managed to leave the radio on all night, and the dream that had disrupted what little sleep he got had resulted from the just ended song. "Mulder? Are you alright? Please open the door." It was Scully's voice on the other side of the connecting door.

"Yeah, Scully... just a dream," he managed to mumble out as he opened the connecting door. The sight of Dana Scully was a relief to him.

"Mulder, are you alright?" Dana Scully's eyes were full of worry and concern.

For a split second, Fox Mulder wondered why. 'How about -because she loves you-, you idiot!' his heart prompted.

"Bad dream." he murmured as he pulled her into his room and into his arms. He felt her nod. She understood. He felt her arms go around his waist and he kissed the top of her head.

"I love you. I'm right here if you want to talk about it," she murmured out, muffled by his chest.

"Maybe later... I love you, too," he said, holding her tight, the tears slowly filling his eyes. Everything was fine now. He was with the one person who truly loved him for who he was. And he loved her too. And this love was going to last... for many, many years.

-The End-

Note: the ending takes place after "P. S. I Love You"

Title: The Beatles Files: 3. A Day in the Life
Rating: G
Category: V, no MSR because it takes place before they have met formally.
Spoilers: only references to the Pilot.

Summary: Weird dreams from a weird song.

Note: Set the morning of the Pilot episode After "I Saw her Standing there" and before "With a Little Help from my Friends".

The basement office was crowded and unkept. A lighted slide table with slides on it was the only illumination other than the fluorescent overhead lights.

Special Agent Fox Mulder had been working late. At the moment, he had his head down on his desk, his glasses skewed on his face. A new song started on the radio as the alarm went off.

"I read the news today oh boy About a lucky man who made the grade And though the news was rather sad Well I just had to laugh I saw the photograph. He blew his mind out in a car He didn't notice that the lights had changed"

He dreamed, the images being of a man in a car with a smoking gun after having just offed himself. The man was unrecognisable, but the smoke smelled of cigarettes. The dream seemed to be set in England.

"A crowd of people stood and stared They'd seen his face before Nobody was really sure If he was from the House of Lords."

He dreamed he was on the street near the House of Lords, though he could only remember having been there once. Nothing looked too familiar, though. Everything seemed hazy.

"I saw a film today oh boy The English Army had just won the war A crowd of people turned away but I just had to look Having read the book. I'd love to turn you on"

Then, he found himself in World War II, just at the very end of it, still in England, though the images were strangely technocolour and psychadelic.

Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream

Mulder woke up bleary, the song drifting through the radio he'd forgotten he'd set the alarm to. Putting his glasses back on straight, he sighed and went back to work, noting that it was a new day. There were many things he had to do today, including meeting his new partner. Fun fun fun.

I read the news today oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.
I'd love to turn you on

The song came to the thundering conclusion and Mulder reached over, turning off the radio alarm for the day. 'Time to get back to work.' he thought, turning back to the slides he was arranging in the tray.

At the same time, the elevator came to the basement. Dana Scully walked out and headed for the only office she knew of.

She knocked on the door marked "Fox Mulder Special Agent". "No one here but the FBI's Most unwanted," said a man's voice from inside.

Opening the door, she introduced herself. "Agent Mulder, I'm Dana Scully. I've been assigned to work with you."

Title: The Beatles Files: 4. A Little Help From My Friends
Rating: G
Category: V, hints of MSR

Summary: Mulder is asked to sing a song at a friend's retirement party Takes place before "Real Love" but after "I Saw Her Standing There".

The Bureau seldom skimped on functions, and this was none different, though it wasn't exactly a formal function. After 25 years of service, one of the top Bureau secretaries, who had been like a mother to Mulder, was retiring. Handed down from the top, the decision had been made to throw her a bash no one would forget.

"Agent Mulder, would you be willing to sing "A Little Help From My Friends?" Anita Levinson asked. Mulder looked at the silver-haired woman who had been almost a surrogate mother and realized he couldn't say no. The only problem was, he wasn't sure about his singing voice. "Sure, Anita... Just don't kill me if I mangle the song or anyone's ear drums, okay?"

"A little help from my friends What would you think if I sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me.
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song,
And I'll try not to sing out of key."

'You're doing a good job of that, Mulder.' Scully grinned at the thought.

"I get by with a little help from my friends,
I get high with a little help from my friends,
Going to try with a little help from my friends."

Mulder looked directly at Scully... almost getting lost in her eyes before he snapped out of it and proceded with the next part of the song.

"What do I do when my love is away.
(Does it worry you to be alone)
How do I feel by the end of the day
(Are you sad because you're on your own)
No I get by with a little help from my friends,"

'Don't go there, Dana Katherine.' Scully's conscience piped up. 'He's your *partner* after all.'

"Do you need anybody,
I need somebody to love.
Could it be anybody
I want somebody to love."

Mulder pulled a chair in front of Scully, then sat down in it.

"Would you believe in a love at first sight,
Yes I'm certain that it happens all the time.
What do you see when you turn out the light,
I can't tell you, but I know it's mine.
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends,"

'Mulder, what are you *doing*?' Scully's thought shrieked.

'It's about time...' Anita Levinson beamed. It had been more than perfectly obvious that Mulder and Scully belonged together... way back when they'd gotten called on the carpet by Blevins, she had already noticed that was the case. Mulder stood up again and finished the song, walking towards Anita.

"Do you need anybody,
I just need somebody to love,
Could it be anybody,
I want somebody to love.
I get by with a little help from my friends,
Yes I get by with a little help from my friends,
With a little help from my friends."

Mulder finished the song and gave the woman a kiss on the cheek. She smiled and was about to say something when Mulder's cell phone rang.

"Excuse me..." He hurried off and answered the phone. As soon as the conversation ended, he walked over to Scully. "Come on... That was Skinner. We've got another case."

-the end... only for now-

Title: The Beatles Files: 5. Yellow Submarine
Rating: G (and S for silly)
Category: Series... along with the others... that are writing themselves, apparently. =)

Summary: Mulder and Scully on the Submarine Voyage at Disneyland. Spoilers; nope... none here.

This next installment of the series can be put anywhere in the timeline I'm apparently setting up in my head. I don't know where it's going yet, but I'll let you know as soon as I do! This is just a silly piece.

The case had ended early and in thanks, the grateful mother they had gone to help in Southern California had given them tickets to Disneyland and, as they had no other plans, they went.

"That was really nice of Mrs. Lambert to give us these tickets... especially considering we did ruin some of her family life by discovering that her husband was a sociopath who was also going under several other aliases..." Mulder pulled into a parking space and then stretched to get out of the car as Scully shut off her laptop and saved the report she had already finished writing.

"Yeah, it was... I didn't know Disneyland was open all the time... this should be fun. Was your father stationed here when you were younger? You have probably been here a lot of times, Scully."

"Mulder, I haven't been to Disneyland in ages!"

"Well, I've never been... this should be fun." Mulder's grin was boyish and very infectious. Before long, Scully found herself grinning right along with her partner.

"Can we go on the Submarine Voyage? There doesn't seem to be a line," Scully said.

They raced up to the front of the ride and then got on board the gaudy but nicely done ride. The infectious 'child-like' aura had taken hold and Scully felt as though she were 10 years old at her first time at Disneyland again as the ride started. She started to sing, softly.

In the town where I was born Lived a man who sailed to sea And he told us of his life In the land of submarines
So we sailed up to the sun Till we found the sea of green And we lived beneath the waves In our yellow submarine"

Mulder listened, amused, and then decided to join her, his voice harmonising with hers most beautifully.

We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

Dana turned to look at her partner and best friend, who was already looking at her. Flashing him a bright smile which he returned with equal brilliance, they continued singing, much to the amusement of the rest of the people on the ride, some of whom actually joined in!

And our friends are all on board
Many more of them live next door
And the band begins to play
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

The prerecorded narrative that went along with the ride was drowned out by the sound of more than ten voices, all singing the happy song from a band from Liverpool, England in the 1960s.

As we live a life of ease
Everyone of us has all we need
Sky of blue and sea of green
In our yellow submarine.
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

The submarine bumped up against the dock as the ride ended and the passengers applauded and some were laughing.

Mulder helped Scully off the ride as everyone else who had already disembarked had done so with the brightest smile on their faces.

"That was fun...

" Fox turned to Dana and said, the boyish grin appearing again and making Fox Mulder appear young again.

"Come on, I'll race you to Space Mountain!" Dana said, laughing at the silliness of what had just happened on the Submarine Voyage.

"You're on!"

-end-

Ok, so it's silly... what are you expecting from me at 1AM on a Friday morning?? =) *goes off in search of her next story idea humming

"Yellow Submarine"...* ;)

Dana Scully let herself back into her apartment and sighed. It had been a long day and she had actually been up since the previous day. The flight home from the last case had been delayed due to a mixup in the reservations. It had been the airline's fault, but that didn't make up for the fact that she was still tired. She walked into her bedroom to change and emerged about ten minutes later, freshly showered and dressed in a sweatshirt and shorts. It was warm in Washington, D. C. for the time of year and the heat had built up in her apartment. At least she lived on the ground floor.

'Thank god for small favours.' she thought to herself, turning on the radio as she went to sit on the sofa with a good book. A song that came on the radio caught her attention.

All my little plans and schemes,
Lost like some forgotten dreams.
Seems that all I really was doing,
Was waiting for you.

Just like little girls and boys,
Playing with their little toys.
Seems like all they really were doing,
Was waiting for love.

'I guess I know who I've been waiting for...' she thought, and for a moment, the thought surprised her. Mulder had been an assignment at first, but the friendship between them had quickly developed. Along with more than that. And Mulder *was* like a little boy sometimes.

At the same time, in apartment 42 across town, Mulder was sitting and listening to the same song. He had arrived home and immediately flopped down on his sofa, switching on his stereo.

Don't need to be alone,
No need to be alone.
It's real love, it's real.
Yes, it's real love, it's real.

'But I am alone... or am I?' Mulder's thoughts went back to the various cases he and Scully had been on. Even though he'd ditched her many times, she still stuck by him, standing up for him and even lying for him to the brass to try and save his butt. A truer friend he couldn't ask for. Only she was more to him than that.

"From this moment on I know,
Exactly where my life will go.
Seems that all I really was doing,
Was waiting for love.

Don't need to be afraid,
No need to be afraid,
It's real love, it's real,
Yes, it's real love, it's real.

'And what am I waiting for? Even if she doesn't feel the same about me, at least she'll know.'

Thought I'd been in love before
But in my heart, I wanted more
Seems like all I really was doing
Was waiting for you.

Mulder mulled over the verse. Phoebe. She had been a crash and burn in his life. And he had tried looking for someone else. Bambi Berenbaum and Detective White. Neither of them had been even *close* to being what he wanted. It all came back to Scully.

'Whenever I'm around Mulder, and he's not in the middle of some trauma, I know I love him in my heart. And not as a surrogate brother!' He was so different from Jack Willis. Or anyone else she had dated. Not only that, she had found herself mentally comparing the person she was on a date with to Mulder. Scully's thoughts wandered to the incredible tenderness Mulder had shown her in the time they had been partners. Never crossing the line exactly, but most coming close. All the signs seemed to point to him feeling something similar. It seemed he may well have been afraid as well.

Don't need to be alone,
Don't need to be alone.
It's real love, it's real.
It's real love, it's real.

Yes, it's real love, it's real.
It's real love, it's real.

'I am not going to be alone. I want to make this real for both of us.' was their shared thought, though they didn't realize it yet.

As the song ended, both reached for their phones, Scully delaying for a moment to turn down the stereo before calling. Just as she picked up the phone, it rang in her hand. "Scully."

"Scully, it's me. Can I come over? I have something I need to tell you, and I don't want to do it over the phone."

The phone rang in her hand as she was about to call out.

"Scully."

"It's me. Can I come over? I have something I need to tell you and I don't want to do it over the phone."

"Sure, Mulder."

"See you in a few," Mulder said, then the connection was broken.

'Maybe he knows...' she thought, closing the book and setting it aside. 'Or maybe...' Abruptly, she quashed the half-formed thought. 'No use thinking like that. I need to tell him how I feel before I lose him to someone else.'

She got up and walked into the kitchen, digging out the instant iced tea mix to make two tall glasses.

<"If there's an iced tea in that bag... could be love"> she could hear Mulder's voice during the stakeout on the Tooms case.

<"Must be fate... root beer"> she had replied.

'I didn't know any better then.' she thought.

The doorbell rang and she turned up the radio again as she walked over to answer the door, looking out the peep hole to see who it was. She smiled and started to unlock the door, pausing to listen to the song playing on the radio. You'll never know how much I really love you. You'll never know how much I really care. Listen, Do you want to know a secret, Do you promise not to tell, whoa oh, oh.

"Scully, are you going to let me in or aren't you?" Mulder's voice was muffled on the other side of the door.

She opened the door and he walked in, a thoughtful expression on his face. Dana smiled at him.

"Make yourself at home. Would you like something to drink?"

"Yes, please."

Closer,
Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear,
I'm in love with you.

Dana went back to the kitchen and retrieved the glasses of iced tea while Mulder sat down and listened to the song.

Listen,
Do you want to know a secret,
Do you promise not to tell, whoa oh, oh.
Closer,
Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear,
I'm in love with you.

'How do I tell her?' he thought, waiting for her to return.

<You just do.> his conscience piped up.

I've known the secret for a week or two,
Nobody knows, just we two.

"Here... I made iced tea." Dana returned and handed him a glass. She sat down on the sofa next to him. He looked at her, surprised.

<"If there's an iced tea in that bag... could be love.""Must be fate. Root beer."> he recalled the Tooms case.

Then, the last verse of the song started and Mulder sang along.

Listen,
Do you want to know a secret,
Do you promise not to tell, whoa oh, oh.

Closer,
Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear,
I'm in love with you.

"Are you? Are you really?" Dana asked as the song finished.

"Yes, Scully. I am in love with you. It's taken me several years to realize it, but I love you."

Dana's smile, the one which lit up her entire being, was all the answer Mulder needed.

He leaned in closer, whispered "I love you" into her ear and then kissed her.

Dana's smile, the one which lit up her entire being, was all the answer Mulder needed.

He leaned in closer, whispered "I love you" into her ear and then kissed her.

"And now, to finish up this set of Beatles music, the song following 'Do You Want to Know a Secret' on their Please Please Me album, here is 'Twist and Shout'," the DJ announced.

Well, shake it up, baby, now, (shake it up, baby)

"Wanna dance, Mulder?" Scully asked.

"Sure!"

They both got to their feet and started dancing to the music Scully was actually somewhat amazed that Mulder knew how to dance.

"I didn't know you knew how..."

"Yeah, well... I didn't know you were a Beatles fan either, Scully."

Well, shake it up, baby, now, (shake it up, baby)

Well, shake it, shake it, shake it, baby, now. (shake it up baby)"

By the time the song ended, they were both breathless and laughing Scully reached tiredly over and turned down the volume on the radio again.

Collapsing back onto the sofa, Mulder reached for both their glasses of iced tea, handing Scully her glass as well.

"A toast To music, laughter, and love." Mulder smirked at his more-than-just-partner.

"I'll drink to that And to everlasting friendship."

"I love you, Mulder."

"Love you too, Scully."

Their glasses clinked, they drank deeply, and then collapsed into each other's arms.

Summary: Mulder and Scully meet Richardson and Jones on a case for VCS.

Comments and other things sent to me. are much appreciated.

Dana Scully arrived in the basement office to find her partner, Fox Mulder, waiting for her. He handed her a mug of coffee. She took a sip. Mulder looked relieved that she had arrived and they traded smiles.

"Just the way I like it. What's the occasion, Mulder?" she asked.

"Skinner wants to see us. He says it's about a case from VCS..." he said, tightly. "One that involves putting together a profile."

Scully blanched. She knew Mulder hated doing things like that.

"Agent Mulder, Agent Scully, thank you for coming so promptly." Assistant Director Walter Skinner said. He handed them a casefile and they looked through the contents together.

"Well, Scully, looks like we have a serial killer on our hands." Mulder said, surveying the scene of the crime.

"Yeah. Unfortunately, it seems it is one who likes the Beatles 'Eleanor Rigby'." Scully nodded, walking over to him. She had just finished surveying the victim. "Death by strangulation occurred no more than six hours ago."

The casefile they had reviewed in Skinner's office had included graphic photos of the three crimescenes previous to the one they were currently at. Each of them had included the same thing. A death by strangulation and the same song lyric scribbled on the walls with permanent marker.

"Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from ?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong ?
Father McKenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near.
Look at him working. Darning his socks in the night when there's
nobody there
What does he care?
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?
Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?"

As they studied the song lyrics, Scully felt Mulder clasp her hand. The lyrics themselves had been written in precise, neat print.

"I like the Beatles... but this is beyond even me..." Mulder mumbled, trying to get a hold of what the killer had been thinking.

"Agents Mulder and Scully?" asked a female voice from behind them.

"Yes?" They answered in unison, turning to look.

"I'm Agent Molly Richardson." A tall, dark-skinned female, her hair in braids, walked up to them. She was almost Mulder's height, and posessed an air of confidence and friendliness.

"I hear you requested me?" Mulder asked, though to Scully he sounded a little anxious, perhaps even a little nervous.

Agent Richardson smiled. "That I did, Agent Mulder. I know of your reputation, and I'm actually glad of it. This way I know I'm getting the best of the best, and that's not lipservice either. I have little tolerance for brownnosing. Just get the work done, and done right the first time, and I don't have a problem."

"If you requested him, what am I doing here?" Scully asked.

"I needed a pathologist as well, and since you were Agent Mulder's partner, I thought that both of you would do nicely."

"Is there anything about the victims that hasn't made it into the report thus far?" Scully inquired, just as a male agent, who had hair far redder than Scully's, approached.

"Molly, I have called everyone who knew the victim," he answered, voice soft, with a hint of Britain and Boston.

"Same as the others, Desmond?"

"'Fraid so..."

"Damn!" Richardson swore under her breath. Mulder and Scully looked at her, inquiringly, and she answered. "No next of kin. The victims thus far have all been lonely people."

"That might explain the song lyric... well, the chorus anyway," Desmond said.

"Wait... there's another connection..."

Four Days Later...

"Thank you, Agent Mulder, Agent Scully. The profile you put together helped us catch the killer before he could kill again," Molly Richardson said, smiling at them.

"Who did it turn out to be?"

"Oddly enough, there was a local priest... who was *ahem* named Father Mackenzie..." Desmond continued telling the story.

Rating: G
Category: V, H, a touch of R...

Summary: Mulder tries to get in touch with Senator Matheson, but the on-hold music proves to be hilarious.

I couldn't resist this one. *grin*

"We're not getting far on this paperwork..." Mulder sighed, tossing the file folder back on his desk.

"I'm going to get lunch, Mulder Do you want anything?" Scully stood up, stretched, and closed the folder on her desk.

"Going to the usual place, Scully?" he asked and she nodded.

"Orange chicken, steamed rice, and veggies." He handed her a five dollar bill, kissing the back of her hand as he did so.

"Right I'll be back." she smiled She shut the door behind her and Mulder reached for the phone, dialling a number.

"Senator Matheson's office." The voice on the other end of the phone was irritatingly calm.

"This is Special Agent Fox Mulder I would like to speak with the Senator please."

"Please hold, Agent Mulder I will see if the Senator is in his office."

Before Mulder could say anything, the connection was put on hold and the music from a local radio station filled his ears.

"Day after day alone on the hill, The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still, But nobody wants to know him, They can see that he's just a fool, And he never gives an answer, But the fool on the hill Sees the sun going down, And the eyes in his head, See the world spinning around."

Mulder couldn't help but do a double-take The song somehow was perfect for what he sometimes thought of the know-nothings on Capitol Hill... the same ones who were being controlled by *plausible deniability* That in itself was a joke The Consortium knew what they were doing.

"Well on his way his head in a cloud, The man of a thousand voices talking perfectly loud But nobody ever hears him, Or the sound he appears to make, And he never seems to notice, But the fool on the hill ... Nobody seems to like him They can tell what he wants to do. And he never shows his feelings, But the fool on the hill..."

The music cut out just as the secretary returned

"I'm sorry, Agent Mulder, but the Senator seems to have stepped out of the office Would you like to leave a message?"

Mulder, trying to keep control of his composure, managed a strangled,

"No, thank you I will call back." before hanging up the reciever and bursting out laughing.

"Mulder?" Scully's voice drifted in from the doorway where she was standing with the takeout lunch she had gone out to get for both of them in her hands.

"Just tried to get in touch with Senator Matheson... turns out, he's got a radio station on his 'on-hold' music... and it was playing 'Fool on the Hill' at the time I was on hold.

Scully grinned, walking in and closing the door behind her.

"That fits," she answered, putting the plastic bag with the food container within on his desk before walking over to her desk and sitting down

"Here's lunch Let's get back to work before SKinner throws a fit."

"Thanks, Dana..." he said, and she smiled.

"Eat... Let's get back to work."

Title: The Beatles Files: 11. Taxman
Rating: G
Classification: MSR (faintly)

Summary: Mulder gets a letter... from the IRS.

Note: WIth all that has been going on in the news about IRS abuses, I figured maybe I should put Mulder under that... see how he'd deal...

Special Agent Fox Mulder was in a morose mood. There was a thin letter sitting on his desk. It was from the IRS. He'd been looking at it for a solid ten minutes now. At the moment, he also had a song stuck in his head... Even though the song was more than appropriate, he still wished the song would shut off and go away.

"Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

"Mulder, what's wrong? That's the fifteenth time you've sighed in the last 5 minutes," Dana Scully, his partner, said, breaking through his thoughts.

"I'm being audited." he sighed again.

"What?"

"I just got a letter from the IRS. Apparently, they have noted some 'irregularities' in my recent tax forms."

"Did they say what sorts of irregularities?"

"No... but that's what they want to talk to me about... more than likely, they're going to make Skinner look like a saint." he pouted.

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street,
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat.
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat,
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet.

Don't ask me what I want it for
If you don't want to pay some more
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

"Come on, Mulder, we'll get through this together..." Scully said.

He

looked up at her and smiled faintly. The atmosphere in the office seemed to have lightened considerably since they'd finally admitted what they'd felt for years... well, at least since they'd first met after she'd been assigned to be his partner. The attraction had been almost instantaneous. Trust had come later.

"Together? But this is my problem, not yours."

"Fox William Mulder, I am offering my help. Besides, I have a friend who owes me a favour and she happens to be a Certified Public Accountant."

"I'm definitely going to need one of those..."

"Ask and ye shall recieve."

"Thanks, Dana..." he smiled.

"For what?" she asked, returning the smile.

"Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
And you're working for no one but me."

"For reminding me how much you mean to me, and for giving me a swift kick in the pants out of my self-pity."

She laughed. "You're welcome, Mulder. Come on... let's get something to eat. I know you have a case to discuss and I don't want to do it on an empty stomach."

Title: The Beatles Files: 12. This Boy
Rating: PG (language), MSR (slightly)

Summary: Mulder and Scully overhear a fight between Desmond and Molly about an ex.

Special Agent Fox Mulder sat in the basement office he shared with his partner and best friend, chewing absently on a sunflower seed. He sighed. Paperwork was beginning to give him a headache.

"Hey, Dana, how about we give Desmond and Molly their engagement presents?" Mulder asked. "It's almost time to go home, and we forgot to bring them when we went to their engagement party."

Dana Scully checked her watch. It had been a long, boring day anyway, and she was feeling somewhat stifled. She nodded.

As they walked out of the fifth floor elevator, a new song started on the radio and they could hear the sound of it coming from an open door of an office.

"That boy took my love away,
He'll regret it someday,
But this boy wants you back again."

However, there was also the sounds of anger eminating from the office of Special Agents Richardson and Jones, who, like Mulder and Scully, shared office space.

"Desmond, I can't believe you're jealous of Paul!" Molly's voice could be heard quite clearly.

"That boy isn't good for you,
Tho' he may want you too,
This boy wants you back again.

"Why not? he's your ex, and you're going out to dinner with him!" Desmond's voice carried out into the hallway.

"Desmond, I didn't know he was even *in* Washington... well, he isn't... he's in Fairfax, but either way, I was going to tell you. He only asked me twenty minutes ago!"

"So you decided to go out with him?"

"Desmond, love, he's my *ex*-boyfriend. You, on the other hand, are my finance, and, hopefully, my future husband. Right now, though, you're behaving like a possessive child."

Before anyone else could hear the fight escalate, Scully ushered Mulder into the office and then quietly closed the door behind them, though both stood with their backs to the door, hoping to go unnoticed.

"Oh, and this boy would be happy,
Just to love you, buy oh my-yi-yi,
That boy won't be happy,
Till he's seen you cry-hi-hi."

"I am *not*!"

"Besides, it isn't as though you- oh, hello, Dana, Mulder..." Molly turned her attention to Mulder and Scully who were standing in the doorway in shock.

"Excuse me." Desmond said, sullenly, shoving past Mulder on the way out the door.

"Dana, I'm going to go after him," Mulder said, and she nodded.

"This boy wouldn't mind the pain,
Would always feel the same,
If this boy gets you back again.
This boy. This boy."

Mulder handed Scully the brightly wrapped present before turning to follow Desmond Jones. Molly Richardson sighed, and gestured for Scully to sit down. "Desmond, wait!" Mulder called after his friend.

Desmond Jones slowed to a walk, though by this time they were at the elevators.

"What do you want, Mulder?" he asked, sullen.

"Desmond, what's going on? If you and Molly had shouted any louder, I think the building would have started shaking."

"I guess you heard, then." Molly said, walking over to turn off the radio.

"Considering you left the door open, yes. Mulder and I heard the fight when we were getting off the elevator. I decided that it would be better to keep the door closed, since no one is supposed to know of your relationship, you know," Dana said.

Molly sighed. "At the rate things are going, I'm not sure Desmond and I have a relationship left, aside from the professional. I can't believe he'd be so jealous over Paul, when the reason he left me to begin with was because he realized he wasn't interested in me... or anyone else of our gender, Dana..." Tears had started tracking down her face.

"I understand, Molly... but does Desmond?"

"I haven't told him yet... I was going to, but he flew off into this jealous rage on me. I've never seen him like this before."

"Maybe she has a good reason to be going to dinner with her ex?"

"Like what?! That she's leaving me, or that she never loved me, maybe?" There was a note of desperation in Desmond's voice.

"Desmond, she never talks about anyone else in her personal life other than you... Not only that, you're starting to sound like me. Well, me before I realized what Dana means to me. Molly loves you. I know she does. I can see it in her eyes. I can see it in yours too. Paul is a good friend, that's all. I know that from what I know of Molly."

Desmond's head drooped. "I've been such a jerk. Molly's probably left by now. I have to find her."

"I have to go meet Paul for dinner. I just wish Desmond and Mulder were back already so we could clear the air."

"Maybe you should leave Desmond a note as to where you're going."

"Good idea."

Desmond managed to find the restaurant where Molly and Paul were having dinner. It was Molly's favorite local pizza place, one she went with him all the time. He found them easily enough.

"Molly... May I talk with you... alone?" he asked, bringing out a bouquet of mixed wildflowers as a peace offering.

Molly nodded.

"Paul, I'll be right back," she said, getting up from her chair.

"You must be Desmond." Paul Andrews said, standing up when Molly and Desmond reappeared after a few minutes, both looking a touch disheveled. "Molly has told me so much about you. I'd asked her out to ask her advice about my own life. You have nothing to worry about, Mr. Jones-"

"Please, call me Desmond. Molly's explained it all. I would like to apologize for my behaviour... to both of you. I've been behaving rudely and very jealous."

Paul smiled. "That's alright, Desmond. Molly told me, and I told her that I was jealous as well of some of her male friends when she and I had been dating. Congratulations on your engagement. You are a lucky man."

Desmond smiled. "Oh, I know. I know."

"Desmond, please join us."

They sat down again, and dinner continued.

Title: The Beatles Files: 13. The Word

The car drove along an empty road. It was late, but the roadside lights kept the place brightly lit. Occasionally, wildlife crossing signs popped up along the side of the road.

"You know, Mulder, I'm glad we finished this case." Dana Scully's voice was tired, and, truth be told, she was as well.

"Yeah. You and me both." Mulder, who was driving, fidgeted with the radio tuning until he hit upon a song which caused him to pull over to the side of the road. Due to the dim lighting in the car, Scully couldn't seen the smile on his face. He had been driving because the case they had just finished had been very draining on Scully, as well as on him.

"Mulder... what are you doing?" Scully asked, as he got out of the car and walked over to her side, opening the door, even while leaving the radio playing.

"Dance with me, Scully... We deserve a little fun, after all."

Mulder flashed a tired smile. He pulled her into his arms and began to dance with her. Though she had her doubts, she still danced with him.

"Say the word and you'll be free
Say the word and be like me
Say the word I'm thinking of
Have you heard the word is love?
It's so fine, It's sunshine
It's the word, love
In the beginning I misunderstood
But now I've got it, the word is good"

"Are you sure we should be doing this, Mulder?" Scully looked and sounded dubious.

"Sure... why not? It's just a friendly dance along the side of an empty road... it's well lit, and I'll leave the headlights on... C'mon, Dana... it's just a song." Mulder smiled at his partner.

At that, Dana began laughing and they two of them continued to dance in the road.

"Spread the word and you'll be free
Spread the word and be like be
Spread the work I'm thinking of
Have you heard the word is love?
It's so fine, It's sunshine
It's the word, love
Every where I go I hear it said
In the good and bad books that I have read"

Ever since they'd admitted exactly how they felt for each other, most of their days felt and seemed brighter than before. True, there were still cases when they'd felt like doing nothing more than run screaming from the scene, and which set both of them into serious downward spirals, but overall, it was good.

'Love... it *is* good.' Dana Scully smiled to herself and looked up at her partner, realising he was thinking the same thing.

They both leaned in close and shared whispered kisses on their cheeks.

"Give the word a chance to say
That the word is just the way
It's the word I'm thinking of
And the only word is love
It's so fine, It's sunshine
It's the word, love
Now that I know what I feel must be right
I'm here to show everybody the light"

Mulder smiled into his partner's hair, even as they continued to dance together in the empty roadway.

"You know, Scully, to quote Stevie Wonder, 'You are the Sunshine of my life'." Mulder flashed his brightest smile at her.

"You know, Mulder, you should be glad Skinner or the Lone Gunmen aren't here to hear this..." she grinned.

"Too corny?" He gave her a raised eyebrow expression.

"Maybe..."

He whirled her around and still kept her close to him. By the end of the move, both were giggling like children.

"Say the word and you'll be free
Say the word and be like me
Say the word I'm thinking of
Have you heard the word is love?
It's so fine, It's sunshine
It's the word, love"

"'It's the word... love.'" Mulder repeated the last line softly while holding Scully close.

"I love you too, Fox." She smiled. "Now let's get back on the road. We're running late. I don't know about you, but all I want to do is go home and fall asleep in my own bed. After a nice, hot shower, of course." Though she was tired, the smile still remained on her lips and in her eyes.

Mulder smiled, dipped Scully, who yelped briefly, and then pulled her close to kiss her.

"Your wish is my command... milady." His voice was low and teasing.

They got back into the car and were back on their way.

Summary: A love letter. Figure it out. =) This story can take place any time after "Real Love," and it is up to the reader to determine if they've gotten 'non-platonic' or not...

Dana Scully woke up one Saturday morning and sighed at the emptiness in the bed next to her. Mulder, her partner and the man she loved, was out of town on assignment that had been given out by Skinner.

They had taken to spending the nights together on weekends, but, right now, he wasn't here.

Padding over to the computer, she turned on her computer and logged on to her account. She noticed she had new email.

Subject: This song says it all...

Dear Dana,

I found these song lyrics and felt they would be perfect to let you know how I feel. Doesn't hurt to tell you, though you might already know. Miss you.

As I write this letter,
Send my love to you,
Remember that I'll always,
Be in love with you.

Treasure these few words 'till we're together,
Keep all my love forever,
P.S., I love you.
You, you, you.

I'll be coming home again to you, love,
And 'till the day I do, love,
P.S., I love you.
You, you, you.

As I write this letter,
Send my love to you,
Remember that I'll always,
Be in love with you.

Treasure these few words 'till we're together,
Keep all my love forever,
P.S., I love you.
You, you, you.

As I write this letter, (Oh oh oh)
Send my love to you, (You know I want you to)
Remember that I'll always, (Yeah)
Be in love with you.

I'll be coming home again to you, love,
And 'till the day I do, love,
P.S., I love you.
You, you, you.
You, you, you.
I love you.

Oh... one more thing, I have a surprise for you I think you'll like.

I'll be home Tuesday. Love you.

F.

Dana smiled, reading the letter and saving it on disk. Mulder was such a romantic sometimes.

"I love you, too, Mulder." she murmured, running fingers through her hair, and thinking of what she could do today.

'surprise party... for two.' the mischivious voice inside her mind said and she grinned in agreement.

Mulder would not be the only one with a surprise on Tuesday.

Category: MSR, V

Summary: Mulder surprises Scully.

6:45am

Fox Mulder quietly approached Dana Scully's apartment door, letting himself in with the key she had given him a few months ago. She had a key to his apartment as well. He had only just arrived back in town from the assignment he had been sent on which had taken him away from Scully and Washington.

He crept into the kitchen and proceded to gather the necessary material for breakfast, some of which he had brought with him in a white bakery bag. Once he was finished, he went out to the livingroom.

Quietly, he set a CD in the CD player and started it, making certain he turned it up just loud enough to be heard in Scully's bedroom, setting it on one certain track.

"Nothing to do to save his life call his wife in
Nothing to say but what a day how's your boy been
Nothing to do it's up to you
I've got nothing to say but it's O.K.
Good morning, good morning..."

Dana awoke with a start. There was someone in her apartment!

Someone who was... playing Beatles music?!

'It had *better* be you, Mulder.' she thought before she remembered and sighed. 'But Mulder's out of town...'

"Breakfast is served." said a familiar voice, accompanied by footsteps into the bedroom.

"Mulder! Are you really here or am I dreaming?" she turned over and pulled herself to a sitting position as she watched Mulder set the tray down in front of her. A tray that had a single long-stemmed rose sticking out from it. Mulder was nothing if not romantic... once he set his mind to it, that is.

"Going to work don't want to go feeling low down
Heading for home you start to roam then you're in town
Everybody knows there's nothing doing
Everything is closed it's like a ruin
Everyone you see is half asleep.
And you're on your own you're in the street
Good morning, good morning..."

"I'm really here," he answered, leaning down to kiss her.

"Surprise. They let me go early. Though this is *not* the surprise I was telling you about."

"That's ok. I'm just glad you're here."

She looked down at the breakfast tray and beamed. A large strawberry croissant and coffee were her perfect ideas for breakfast, and it was perfect this morning because she was starving. Mulder had been kind enough to slice the croissant into smaller pieces. She reached over and grabbed one.

"After a while you start to smile now you feel cool.
Then you decide to take a walk by the old school.
Nothing has changed it's still the same
I've got nothing to say but it's O.K.
Good morning, good morning..."

"I spoke to Skinner last night before my flight left. He's given us both the day off, so how about if we spend the day on the coast?"

Dana sipped her coffee. Amaretto. Grinning, she reached out a hand and cupped her palm along Mulder's cheek. "You know what I like." in the same tone she had heard him use on a case in the past.

"People running round it's five o'clock.
Everywhere in town is getting dark.
Everyone you see is full of life.
It's time for tea and meet the wife.
Somebody needs to know the time, glad that I'm here.
Watching the skirts you start to flirt now you're in gear.
Go to a show you hope she goes.
I've got nothing to say but it's O.K.
Good morning, good morning..."

He beamed a smiled at her, feeling the tension drain from his body.

Though the rumour mill had long suggested it, their redefined relationship had not been made public knowledge. She had even earned a new nickname.

'Mrs. Spooky'. Dana had *not* been pleased. She also knew how Mulder felt about the tag 'spooky' they had pinned him with.

"Mulder... come over here and lay down for a while, please?"

He complied, gladly, kicking off his shoes before he climbed into Dana's bed. Dana fitted herself against him and sighed contentedly as they each wrapped their arms around the other.

"The coast can wait till later. Let's take a nap."

"Okay."

They dozed off together.

Title: The Beatles Files: 16. Birthday
Rating: G
Classification: MSR

Summary: Weird things are happening... but there *has* to be a reason...

Okay, this one is being posted on 10/13/97 for a reason. Mind you, when I'm posting it, I'm not quite yet in 10/13, but most of the rest of the world *is*, so... =)

Fox William Mulder was having a *really* bad day. He'd been late to work, then realized he'd misplaced his keys and therefore there was no way of getting into his office... well, his and his partner's. He was feeling somewhat hopeless and trying to keep from throwing a total fit of frustration.

"Fox... calm down!" came Dana Scully's voice from a distance.

"I told you... I even made my PARENTS call me Mulder!" he almost cried. The situation wasn't making much sense, but what was worse was that he seemed to be stuck in a mindset which was five years old... one which he'd long since passed and grown out of... including the part about allowing no one to call him by his first name.

"You say it's your birthday
It's my birthday too--yeah
They say it's your birthday
We're gonna have a good time
I'm glad it's your birthday
Happy birthday to you."

The lyrics of a song caught his attention. Unfortunately, then, the next feeling he had was the urge to hit his head against the office door and perhaps start crying. His day was starting off atrociously.

Things were going from bad to worse since he was feeling as though he had lost his best friend... and also someone who meant more to him than that.

"Scully... oh, God, Scully..."

October 13
10:45am

"Scully? Where are you, Scully?" Mulder thrashed around in his sleep.

"Fox... sweetheart, please wake up... you're scaring me."

Dana Scully's voice again. She sounded afraid.

There was a jolt and he found himself suddenly awake, and in the arms of Dana Katherine Scully.

"Yes we're going to a party party
Yes we're going to a party party
Yes we're going to a party party."

The words of a song on the radio made him realize something...

Dreams are a pain in the ass sometimes. But they also serve to remind you of things you almost forgot.

"I would like you to dance--Birthday
Take a cha-cha-cha-chance-Birthday
I would like you to dance--Birthday
Dance"

"S-s-scully?" he croaked, not sure of where his voice would be, and also afraid she was a dream.

"Yes, Mulder. I'm right here. What's wrong? You've been screaming." "I love you..." "I love you too... and Happy Birthday."

"Wha...?" "You didn't think I'd forget that it's your birthday, did you?" "Well, um... no... though I must admit I nearly did." She smiled warmly at him. "I'm glad you picked this morning to come home from your solo assignment. I missed you."

"You say it's your birthday
Well it's my birthday too--yeah
You say it's your birthday
We're gonna have a good time
I'm glad it's your birthday
Happy birthday to you."

"I missed you too," he answered as the last strains of the song were cut off by the sleep timer on the radio ran out of time.

"Now... you mentioned something about Skinner giving us the day off and wanting to spend the rest of the day on the coast? I think we can still make it if we hurry."

"How long have we been napping?"

"A few hours... come on, sleepyhead, let's go..." She smiled.

"Okay! I get dibs on the shower! I've been travelling all night."

As she watched the man she loved with her very soul, she laughed.

He could be the silliest person at times, and that was part of the reason she loved him.

Happy birthday, indeed.

Title: The Beatles Files: 17. Nowhere Man
Rating: G
Category: H, V

Summary: the on hold music strikes again, only this time gets Scully

Reply to Deb's April Fools Day challenge.

This is in the same vein as "The Fool on the Hill" but takes place after.

April 1

After much determination, the decision was made. Scully picked up the phone and dialled.

"Director Freeh's office."

"This is Special Agent Dana Scully. I would like to speak with the Director please."

"One moment."

There was a soft 'click' at the other end and then a song started.

"He's a real nowhere Man,
Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
Making all his nowhere plans
for nobody."

Dana widened her eyes, part of her wanting to laugh and another part wondering if she would be able to keep her composure and be able to speak to the Director of the FBI professionally.

"Doesn't have a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?
Nowhere Man, please listen,
You don't know what you're missing,
Nowhere Man, the world is at your command."

Scully noticed Mulder watching her carefully. It had been her idea to call the FBI Director to check on the status of something. But she looked like she was having a difficult time with something.

"Scully? You ok?"

Scully waved him off, looking slightly strangled.

"He's as blind as he can be,
Just sees what he wants to see,
Nowhere Man can you see me at all?
Doesn't have a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?
Nowhere Man, don't worry,
Take your time, don't hurry,
Leave it all till somebody else
lend you a hand."

Her composure was breaking up rapidly. If she didn't hang up soon, she risked looking more than a little foolish.

"He's a real Nowhere Man,
Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
Making all his nowhere plans
for nobody."

Right as the song ended, the line clicked again.

"Agent Scully, the Director is in a meeting right now. Would you like to leave a message?"

"No... I.. ah... I'll call later."

Quickly, she replaced the reciever back on the cradle and then laughed until her sides ached.

"Mind sharing the joke, Scully?" Mulder looked at her with an inquisitive grin.

"Remember what happened to you before with Senator Matheson and that on-hold music? Director Freeh seems to have the Beatles "Nowhere Man" on his 'on-hold' system." She managed to say.

Mulder laughed. Scully laughed more.

"Come on... it's lunch time. We need some air. My treat."

"Cool!"

As they left the office, both were still laughing.

Summary: Mulder and Scully have a little fun with a Beatles favorite at a party for Richardson and Jones

"Mulder, you *know* I can't sing to save my life... so why are you wanting to drag me into a karaoke bar?" Scully asked.

"Hey, it wasn't my idea. Molly and Desmond invited us. I think this is their version of an engagement party."

"Knowing them, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised..."

"Come on... we're already late!"

They made their way inside and were greeted warmly by their friends.

"Mulder! Dana! Glad you could make it!"

"Hi, Molly. Sorry we're late, but the flight back from New Orleans was delayed," Scully said.

"Oooh! Having too much fun at Marti Gras?" Molly smiled.

"No... just looking into a serial killer for the VCS." Mulder grumbled. It had not been a fun case.

Molly Richardson's dark face was damp with perspiration. She had, apparently, had a touch too much to drink. Her dark hair was held away from her face by a bright gold clip, though there were locks of it falling back into her eyes.

"I've already signed you up to sing a song... knowing how fond you are of the Beatles, it was "Help!"..." she giggled.

"Oh, Molly, you didn't!" Dana said.

"I did so. And while I was totally sober, so don't go blaming my being a little drunk on that."

With a gesture from Molly, the announcer started up.

"Next up, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully with "Help!" from the Beatles."

announced the guy who was running the machine.

"Well, here goes nothing..." Dana murmured. Mulder nodded. The music began.

"Help, I need somebody,
Help, not just anybody,
Help, you know I need someone, help."

They looked into each other's eyes as the song started, both of them holding mischievous gleams. They were going to have fun with this song.

"When I was younger, so much younger than today, I never needed anybody's help in any way.

But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured, Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors."

Mulder stopped singing at the nod from Dana, and she took the chorus solo. It wasn't the first time he'd heard her sing, but she kept reinforcing his opinion that she had a terrific voice.

"Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me."

When the verse was over, Dana had leaned into Mulder and had a pleading yet playful look on her face. Along with a huge grin. She batted her eyelashes at him, flirtingly. He gulped.

"You go, I'm out of breath." she murmured, and he nodded.

"And now my life has changed in oh so many ways,
My independence seems to vanish in the haze.
But every now and then I feel so insecure,
I know that I just need you like I've never done before."

Mulder caught Dana's eye and she winked. He grinned and continued.

"Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me."

Mulder'd put his hand on his heart and looked at Scully imploringly during the last line of the chorus. She nodded and they started the next verse together.

"When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody's help in any way.
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured,
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors.

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me, help me, help me, oh."

When they sat down, they were both laughing. No one else had bothered to sing on key either, so it wasn't difficult to make the attempt at least to be on key during the song.

"We'd better be careful... That wasn't exactly discrete on our parts," Scully said, though she was still smiling.

"Well, if we're asked about it, we could say we were drunk. Then again, it's not as if there haven't been office rumours that we're sleeping together going around since day one." Mulder shrugged it off.

"Mulder... technically, off cases, we *are* sleeping together."

"Yeah, but if no one else knows about it, who cares?"

"You have a point."

There was perhaps a heartbeat of silence between them.

"Dana..."

"Fox..."

"How about we sneak out of here, go over to your place and do something about that technicality..."

"I thought you'd never ask."

Title: The Beatles Files: 19. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Rating: PG with obvious MSR content
Spoilers: "The Blessing Way" (but only a little)

Summary: Scully contemplates the morning after the night before.

Dana Scully woke up somewhat early. Sunlight streamed into the bedroom window from the outside, buffered only by the light curtains. As she yawned and stretched, she turned over to the person sleeping next to her in bed. Her breasts brushed the bare skin of his upper arm and she draped her arm across him.

Mulder was still sound asleep and he slept better when he was next to her than alone. They'd started spending their free weekends together some time ago. For a long time now, they shared a bed, either hers or his, cuddles, kisses, and backrubs, but that was all. Nothing had been done which couldn't have been interpreted as probably a little overly friendly. Except, of course, for the occasional kiss-that-went-on-too-long.

Last night, they had finally done what they had both wanted for a very long time. With the obvious developing love, they had finally consumated the relationship. It had been a long time waiting.

Making love with Mulder had been a wonderously loving and beautiful experience. He had been gentle, finding the limits of what she liked and disliked even though he had long since known of most of them, and she had found that even with his preoccupation with adult movies, he was loving and considerate. What they had done felt completely and absolutely right.

Unbidden, a song came slipping into her mind.

"I look at you all see the love there that's sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping
Still my guitar gently weeps
I don't know why nobody told you how to unfold your love
I don't know how someone controlled you
They bought and sold you."

She remembered the shock of finding those files in the cave in West Virginia. Lots of files. Lots and lots of files. And the larger shock of the fact that Samantha's file had originally belonged to Mulder, and had a recent tissue sample.

Rubbing at Mulder's back, she noted the light scratches across it.

Looking at them, she noted with a laugh that *she* had taken some recent, ahem, tissue samples too... with her fingernails.

"I look at the world and I notice it's turning
While my guitar gently weeps
With every mistake we must surely be learning
Still my guitar gently weeps
I don't know how you were diverted
You were perverted too
I don't know how you were inverted
No one alerted you."

Mulder had, more than obviously, been going without his extensive video collection for some time. She'd watched as he had cancelled his subscription to Celebrity Skin and Adult Video News. He had told her at the time of the fact that he had been attempting to fill the empty space in his heart with something until they'd 'found' one another.

"I look at you all see the love there that's sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
Look at you all...
Still my guitar gently weeps."

"Wha... Scully?" Mulder still didn't wake up too well most times, but at least his nightmares didn't happen as often.

"Yes, Mulder?" she murmured, kissing his earlobe.

"'Love you..." he murmured, reaching for her.

"I love you too, Mulder," she answered, gladly returning into his arms where he started enthusiastically kissing her bare shoulder.

Dana found his hands moving everywhere, and a certain body part was already clamouring for attention.

"Frisky this morning aren't we." she grinned.

"A-yup." He beamed his heart-melting smile at her and continued doing what he was doing.

"So... no regrets?"

He looked up into her eyes, a mischievous sparkle in his eyes. "I'll show you 'no regrets'!"

And he did.

Title: The Beatles Files: 20. All Together Now
Rating: PG-13 (for the ending...)
Category: MSR, V

Summary: Mulder gets flowers... and a surprise favorite...

Note: I got the idea for this story from another fanfic I read... and, like "Slow News Day," Mulder and Scully had their own ideas!

Mulder awoke after a peaceful night sleep to find a flower on his coffee table. It was a soft pink coloured rose. There was a note with it.

"One, two, three, four
Can I have a little more?
five, six, seven eight nine ten I love you."

The print on the card was typical computer font... meaning he couldn't tell who had sent it.

He walked into his bathroom to brush his teeth. The garlicky taste from the Italian food he had eaten last night - with Scully! his mind prompted and he smiled inwardly - was bothering him.

However, when he got to his bathroom, he found a bunch of flowers, white carnations this time, sitting in the sink. There were about fifteen of them, bundled into three of five each. A note was attached to each bundle.

"A, B, C, D
Can I bring my friend to tea?
E, F, G H I J I love you."

Said the first.

"Sail the ship, Jump the tree
Skip the rope, Look at me"

Said the second.

"All together now...."
Mulder, check your bedroom...

Said the third.

Each was written in a slightly different font, but it was still computer printed.

That last line got his curiousity piqued and he walked over to his bedroom. The CD player was playing softly, set on one track. The Beatles "All Together Now," which were also, he realized, the verses that were written on the strange notes with the flowers he was finding all over his apartment.

But there was no one in the room. Instead, a bundle of violets sat on his pillow. Curious, he walked over and picked them up, noticing yet another note on them.

"Black, white, green, red
Can I take my friend to bed?
Pink, brown, yellow orange blue I love you All together now....

Sail the ship, Jump the tree
Skip the rope, Look at me

All together now...."

Look behind you, Mulder...

The door squeeked quietly as it closed and Mulder whirled around to see who was behind him.

Dana Katherine Scully. She stood there dressed in a soft purple silk robe over something white... She smiled lovingly at him, walking into the light from the shadows of the door.

"Scully? What are you doing?"

"What does it look like I'm doing, Mulder?"

She walked silently to him and before he could answer, she had met his mouth with her own. At the same time, she pressed her body against his, and he moaned, his hands rubbing her back and sides. Her hands were not idle either, moving down his back to his buttocks, squeezing them and pushing him more against her.

"Are you sure about this, Dana?" He was breathless after the kiss.

"Why don't you keep going, Fox, and I'll let you know." She smiled a slow, seductive smile.

"It's a weekday... I thought we had agreed... no spending weekdays together... After all, no point getting anyone at the office suspicious of what is going on." Mulder was having some difficulty keeping his concentration centred on the fact that he didn't want to place both of their reputations in danger. His body, however, was having other ideas.

Dana Scully was one tempting subject.

"Skinner called this morning. We've both been placed on forced-leave. Overdue vacation time and all that."

"Oh..."

And then neither of them could speak anymore...

After all, we have to leave them their privacy...

Not to mention the fact that I don't have the guts to write an NC-17.

Title: The Beatles Files: 21. We Can Work It Out

The radio in the basement office was on, but the occupants were not in the listening mood.

'I can't believe it! I'm letting you know how I feel and you aren't even LISTENING!' Scully's thought was accompanied by a wave of pain more emotionally based than physical.

"Mulder, *STOp* ditching me like a bad date!" Dana Scully stated firmly.

"I'm not! There were some other things I wanted you to check up on during this last case."

'Not to mention the fact that I'm trying to protect you.' he thought. 'The People I'm dealing with are *dangerous*. I don't want you hurt. At all.'

"You aren't sorry are you... Mulder, you're *always* ditching me, either way you look at it! Why can't you just admit that?"

"Try to see it my way,
Do I have to keep on talking till I can't go on?
While you see it your way,
Run the risk of knowing that our love may soon be gone.
We can work it out,

We can work it out."

"Scully, I love you. I don't want you to be hurt at all."

'You aren't getting off so easily, mister.' Scully thought.

"Mulder, by constantly ditching me, you *are* hurting me. Besides, how do you think I will feel if you end up either hurt or *DEAD* during one of those times you'd ditched me?"

"Think of what you're saying.
You can get it wrong and still you think that it's all right.
Think of what I'm saying,
We can work it out and get it straight, or say good night.
We can work it out,
We can work it out."

Mulder was quiet, having no answer for his partner and the woman he loved more than anything. Right now, though, the pain was clearly written on both their faces.

"Life is very short, and there's no time
For fussing and fighting, my friend.
I have always thought that it's a crime,
So I will ask you once again."

Neither of them said anything, but the verse just ended had caught both of their attentions.

"Try to see it my way,
Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong.
While you see it your way
There's a chance that we may fall apart before too long.
We can work it out,
We can work it out."

"Scully, there will be times where I have to go by myself-"

"Mulder, you're still not listening to me. And I can see there is no point even trying to argue the point with you."

"Life is very short, and there's no time
For fussing and fighting, my friend.
I have always thought that it's a crime,
So I will ask you once again."

Scully walked to the door and opened it. "If you can't see how much what you've done has hurt me, then perhaps we shouldn't be together... at all."

The door shut and she was gone, leaving Mulder and the radio alone in the office.

"Try to see it my way,
Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong.
While you see it your way
There's a chance that we may fall apart before too long.
We can work it out,
We can work it out."

Mulder reached over and turned off the radio, studying the clock.

'I might as well go home.' He thought. 'It's over. It's *all* over.'

Category: MSR (as if there was any doubt!), V, Angst.

Summary: A song dedication.

Mulder walked into his apartment sullenly. Things had not gone well and he was more than positive that not only was his personal relationship with Dana Scully finished, so was his professional one. And he valued the personal one *much* more. She was his life, and she was more than aware of that. Flopping on the couch, he flipped on the radio.

"This is a song dedicated to Fox from Dana. Dana says to let you know, Fox, that you are the best thing that has happened to her in a very long time." the deejay related in an emotionally charged voice.

The song started up and Mulder found himself on the verge of tears.

"There are places I'll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better"

His phone rang and he reached over to pick it up.

"Mulder."

"It's me." Scully's voice smiled over the line and he could hear the echo of the same radio station in the background.

"I heard the dedication."

"I'm glad you did."

"Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all"

"Scully... Dana... What is the song supposed to mean?"

"Listen to the words, Mulder."

And Fox Mulder listened... and wept.

"But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new"

Mulder remembered the first time he had told her he loved her. The Beatles seemed to bring out the emotions in him which he had though were locked securely away. As the tears streamed down his face, he knew those emotions were not as locked away as he had thought. He loved Dana Katherine Scully. With all his heart.

"Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more"

"I love you, Dana..." he spoke softly, and Dana could hear the tears in his voice.

"I love you too, Fox. I just wanted you to know... I may be angry with you, but I have not, nor will I ever, stopped loving you. " "I'm sorry I'm so hard-headed."

"Mulder..." the amusement in her voice made him smile, even through his tears. "You wouldn't be you if you weren't so hard-headed. I just don't appriecate being ditched all the time. Even if you think it might be for my own good. I'm your *partner*. In more ways than just the professional. I want to be treated as an equal."

"I'm sorry. Sometimes things go to auto-pilot and I go into 'overprotective older brother' mode. I can't promise you I won't ever ditch you again-"

"The next time you do, you might end up dead, have you ever considered that?"

"Yeah... as I was saying, I can't promise I won't do that again, but I can promise that I will do my best to stay with you."

"Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more"

"I miss you, Fox... "

"I miss you too... I wanna come over."

"I think that would be a good idea."

"I miss you, Mulder."

"I miss you, too... I wanna come over."

"I think that would be a good idea."

"I'll be there in about ten minutes. I love you, Scully."

"I love you too, Mulder." She smiled into her phone. "Get your butt over here."

"YOu want just my butt to come over?"

"Mulder...." Scully fought down a laugh, and failed.

"See you in ten. Maybe less."

Mulder grabbed his coat and headed out the door to his car.

As he started driving, a song floated through his mind, unbidden.

"The long and winding road that leads to your door,
Will never disappear,
I've seen that road before It always leads me here,
leads me to your door."

He remembered just after his father had died. Scully had been there for him. As she always was. And there he was, treating her like...

well, like Krycek had accused him of doing... treating her like someone's idea of a bad date and *constantly* ditching her. He could see why she was tiring of it.

The thought of Alex Krycek actually being right about something brought up a bitter taste in Mulder's mouth. Except that he *knew* that this one time, ratboy had been absolutely right.

"The wild and windy night the rain washed away,
Has left a pool of tears crying for the day.
Why leave me standing here, let me know the way"

'The way is always to Dana... without a doubt.' he thought, pulling over in front of the building she still lived in... even after the mess with Eugene Tooms and Duane Barry.

"Many times I've been alone and many times I've cried
Anyway you'll never know the many ways I've tried, but
Still they lead me back to the long and winding road
You left me standing here a long, long time ago"

He got out of the car and walked up to the front door.

"Don't leave me waiting here, lead me to you door
Da, da, da, da--"

Knocking, he waited for her to answer.

The door opened...

Knocking, he waited for the door to open.

The door opened...

Before Mulder could even say anything, he was pulled headlong into the apartment and shoved against the door, Scully holding him tight in her arms. Then, she kissed him.

After overcoming his surprise, he hugged her back, which was then he noticed the song playing on Scully's stereo, as well as the fact she was singing along.

"Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do."

She pulled him further into her living room and started dancing with him. When the shock wore off, he grinned and pulled her into his arms.

He also sang along.

"Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.

Someone to love,
Somebody new.
Someone to love,
Someone like you."

"I love you, Dana... and I'm sorry."

"I love you too, Fox."

"Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do."

They stood clasped together and sang the last verse.

"Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.
Yeah, love me do.
Whoa, oh, love me do."

When the song faded, Scully stepped over, pulling Mulder with her, turning off the CD player, she pushed him down to the sofa and then sat in his lap.

"Let's not fight anymore."

"Can't promise we won't..."

"True. But let's make the effort."

"Okay."

Scully paused for a moment, looking into Mulder's eyes.

"Fox... how about..."

Her voice trailed off as Mulder lips met hers.

Title: The Beatles Files: 25. Hey Jude

Sometime during the night, Dana Scully found herself awake, but only a little. Mulder's arm was around her waist and he was murmuring endearments into her neck... in his sleep.

"Love you, Scully... Never wanna hurt you... ever..." he pulled her closer and planted a kiss on her neck. "'N 'm sorry for ditchin' ya."

Dana smiled and ruffled Mulder's hair a little. "Love you too, Mulder."

Oddly enough, her neighbour was apparently playing music and she could hear it through the walls separating them.

"Hey Jude, don't make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.

Hey Jude, don't be afraid.
You were made to go out and get her.
The minute you let her under your skin,
Then you begin to make it better."

Mulder. The song seemed to scream his name.

They'd had a fight. It wasn't knock-down, drag-out... at least not physically, but between them, it didn't have to be physically.

Emotionally was already more than enough.

After they'd resolved what it was that had caused the fight, both were sorely worn out, so they'd kissed and made up...

"And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain,
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders.
For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder."

The whole fight had been about how Mulder almost always seemed to ditch her and go off somewhere, leaving her concerned.

Scully knew that there were some times where he couldn't help but run off by himself, but she hated it even more when he'd disappear on her without even telling her first.

"Hey Jude, don't let me down.
You have found her, now go and get her.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.

So let it out and let it in, hey Jude, begin,
You're waiting for someone to perform with.
And don't you know that it's just you, hey Jude, you'll do,
The movement you need is on your shoulder.

Hey Jude, don't make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her under your skin,
Then you'll begin to make it
Better better better better better better, oh.

Da da da da da da, da da da, hey Jude..."

As the song ended, Scully could sense that Mulder was about half-awake now, and humming along to the music coming from next door.

"I meant what I mumbled, Scully..." Mulder's voice was low, but there was more than enough indication that he was pretty much wide awake, as was she. "I'm sorry for ditching you so often."

"Just tell me what you're going to do before you do that again, okay? There will be times I will want to come with you. We *are* partners, after all. In most every sense of the term," she answered.

"Okay... Since we *are* partners..." the smile on Mulder's face could be heard in his voice. "Wanna pick up where we left off?"

Dana laughed.

"Oh, Mulder..."

Summary: Scully listens to a song which reminds her of Mulder.

This is a companion piece to "Got To Get You Into My Life" from Scully's POV.

Dana Scully was tired and dozing in the taxi she was taking. The radio was tuned to an oldies station and as she was about to doze off, a song caught her attention and she smiled.

"Close your eyes and I'll kiss you,
Tomorrow I'll miss you;
Remember I'll always be true.
And then while I'm away,
I'll write home ev'ry day,
And I'll send all my loving to you."

Scully remembered when Mulder had been away on business alone and wrote to her practically daily. Now that it was her turn to be away, she'd done the exact same thing.

"All my loving I will send to you
All my loving, darling I'll be true."

Their last words to each other, both face to face, and over the phone and email, were 'I Love You'.

Since they'd mutually declared they'd fallen deeply in love with one another, those words had meant more and more.

"I'll pretend That I'm kissing
the lips I am missing
And hope that my dreams will come true.
And then while I'm away,
I'll write home ev'ry day,
And I'll send all my loving to you."

The previous night had seen an intensely erotic dream, though Dana had to admit to herself that the main thing she missed about Mulder was being in his arms.

"All my loving I will send to you.
All my loving, darling I'll be true."

"Miss? We're here." The cab-driver announced to her and she nodded, handing him the payment for the trip.

After getting out of the car and getting checked in, she found herself at the gate with a few minutes to spare. Augusta, Maine, was too far from Mulder when he was in Washington, DC. She pulled out her calling card and dialled his home phone number. Nothing. Then, she tried his cell phone.

"Mulder." His voice answered, though he sounded lonely and tired. 'I can fix *that*!' she grinned. "Hiya! It's me. You doing okay over there?" she asked. "Scully! Miss you! Lots!" His voice brightened so much, she was

almost blinded.

She could hear the faint strains of music in the background, more specifically the Beatles' "Got to Get You Into My Life".

"Are you on another stakeout?" she asked, concerned.

"Nope. Just sitting and thinking and stargazing. No looking for UFOs tonight either... not without you here."

There was a gentle smile that lit Scully's face. "Oh, Mulder..."

"Scully... I love you... Hurry home, please?" "I love you, too, Mulder. As for home... that's why I called. I'm in the airport at Augusta now. I'm going to need you to pick me up in about an hour. Can you do that?"

"Sure. Scully, can we have dinner tomorrow night at my place?"

"That sounds wonderful. Are you going to cook?"

"Yup."

"Then I'll be there."

"Nonstop service to Dulles International now boarding." came the muffled announcement.

"My flight's boarding now, Mulder. I'll see you in an hour at Dulles, okay?"

"You bet!"

"I love you."

"I love you, too. See you in an hour."

She hung up the phone and headed for the gate. She was going home to the person who mattered most, and she was ecstatic.

The CD in the car stereo started on the next song. At the same time, the lone occupant sat up and listened.

"I was alone, I took a ride,

I didn't know what I would find there

Another road where maybe I could see another kind of mind there"

'Yeah, that sounds like me.' Mulder thought as he sat and just looked up at the stars.

For once, he was out relaxing and stargazing, not UFO hunting.

Scully was away at a pathology conference, and there was almost zero caseload, so he'd decided to take a night off and rest... and think.

"Ooh, then I suddenly see you,

Ooh, did I tell you I need you

Every single day of my life"

He took the photo of Scully he had in his wallet and held onto it feverently. It was a photo she'd had taken at one of those places where they put people in shiny, sparkly clothing and loads of makeup.

Scully had managed to convice him to go with her for their two for one deal a few months back and they'd both had their pictures done, and had even had a few shots of them together taken. Those last shots were safely hidden away in a safe deposit box. Only a limited few people knew of them and they were sworn to secrecy.

In the photo she'd given him, she looked especially lovely, the dark green velvet of the dress setting off the colour of her eyes and the red of her hair.

"You didn't run, you didn't lie

You knew I wanted just to hold you

And had you gone you knew in time we'd meet again For I had told you"

Mulder remembered the three months of Scully's abduction, and the nightmare it had been. Somewhere deep down inside of himself during that time, he knew he loved her more than anyone and would go to the ends of the earth to find her. Only one other person was afforded that type of devotion, and without Scully... part of him didn't want to look for Samantha.

"Ooh, you were meant to be near me

Ooh, and I want you hear me

Say we'll be together every day"

Fondly, he remembered the first time they had admitted to one another that they were, indeed, in love with each other. It had been after listening to the Beatles sing "Real Love" after their Anthology series had been released, both on video and the 3 volumes of the double CDs. Mulder had gotten the boxed set of videos and they had taken the place of his *other* video collection.

Of course, he also had a lot easier time sleeping... at least on weekends.

"Got to get you into my life

What can I do, what can I be,
When I'm with you I want to stay there
If I'm true I'll never leave
And if I do I know the way there"

"That's it!" he sat up from where he had been lying, gazing up at the stars and the full moon under the car's open sunroof.

"Ooh, then I suddenly see you,
Ooh, did I tell you I need you
Every single day of my life"

Mulder's cell phone rang then.

"Mulder."

"Hiya! It's me. You doing okay over there?"

"Scully! Miss you! Lots!" Mulder managed to get out. He was sure his smile could be seen even where she was in Maine.

"Got to get you into my life
Got to get you into my life"

"Are you on another stakeout?" Scully's voice sounded concerned.

"Nope. Just sitting and thinking and stargazing. No looking for UFOs tonight either... not without you here."

"Oh, Mulder..." Scully smiled into the phone.

"I was alone, I took a ride,
I didn't know what I would find there
Another road where maybe I could see another kind of mind there Then suddenly I see you,
Did I tell you I need you..."

"Scully... I love you... Hurry home, please?"

"I love you too, Mulder. As for home... That's why I called. I'm in the airport at Augusta now. I'm going to need you to pick me up in about an hour. Can you do that?"

"Sure. Scully, can we have dinner tomorrow night at my place?"

"That sounds wonderful. Are you going to cook?"

They had found out several years ago that Fox Mulder was more than a passable cook. He just needed the proper motivation, and Scully most certainly qualified.

"Yup."

"Then I'll be there... My flight's boarding now, Mulder. I'll see you in an hour at Dulles, okay?"

"You bet!"

"I love you."

"I love you too. See you in an hour."

As soon as the call ended, Mulder hung up the phone and started the car. He had a lot planned and needed to get started. Tomorrow was a Saturday, but he had one item he wanted to get now.

Classification: MSR(natch!) really

Summary: Mulder goes shopping...

"Can I help you with something, sir?" The sales clerk interrupted a moment of frustration and Mulder looked at her with what amounted to relief.

"Uh... yeah. I'm trying to pick out a ring for... someone special."

Mulder could already feel the grin in his face. It always happened when he thought about the woman he loved. "But I can't see the prices."

"Oh, well, how can I help you, then? Which ring were you interested in?" The woman smiled.

Mulder started to study her when the song playing in the mall's main area caught his attention.

"Baby's good to me, you know,
She's happy as can be, you know,
She said so.

I'm in love with her and I feel fine."

'And no matter how much she tells me -I'm fine, Mulder-, I always know she isn't... Because when she is, she usually says something different...' he thought.

"Baby says she's mine, you know,
She tells me all the time, you know,
She said so.
I'm in love with her and I feel fine."

After a long business trip, Dana had only arrived back home last night. He'd had something to take care of first thing in the morning or else he would have gladly accepted her invitation to spend the night.

Unfortunately, the 'first thing in the morning' business had stretched well into the afternoon, and now he was standing at a jewelry store in a shopping mall, having gone through every other jewelry store in three state area of Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. No luck anywhere. He was starting to lose patience... no, wait, he'd already lost patience. Now, he was purely frustrated.

"I'm so glad that she's my little girl.
She's so glad, she's telling all the world
That her baby buys her things, you know.
He buys her diamond rings, you know,

She said so.

She's in love with me and I feel fine, mmm."

"Sir?" The sales clerk was somewhat confused at the somewhat dazed smile on Mulder's lips.

Mulder didn't hear her, and when he started to sway from side to side with the music, she listened more closely and started to laugh at the sight.

Mulder, on the other hand, was busy making plans as to how he was going to do what he had to do, as well as absently looking for a ring.

"Baby says she's mine, you know,
She tells me all the time, you know,
She said so.
I'm in love with her and I feel fine.

SUddenly, his eyes lit upon it. The perfect ring. It suited the woman he loved perfectly. He could see the light in her eyes match the light in the stones.

Besides, she was worth whatever he had to pay...

I'm so glad that she's my little girl.
She's so glad, she's telling all the world
That her baby buys her things, you know.
He buys her diamond rings, you know,

She said so.

She's in love with me and I feel fine, mmm, mmm."

The song was over. He smiled, pleased with himself.

"Miss?"

The clerk was just turning away when he got her attention. "Yes, sir? What can I help you with?"

"That one," he said, pointing to the ring in the display case.

As the clerk looked at the ring in direct line of Mulder's finger, she smiled.

"Your lady friend will like that ring. Is it a special occasion or a special person?" she asked, and at that moment, Mulder thought that the clerk reminded him of Scully's mother... He smiled. "Or is it both?"

"Both... definitely both." Mulder's smile got even wider.

"Then it is a wise choice."

The clerk took the ring and put it in a ring box after giving the emerald and two diamonds a good polish. Mulder pulled out his credit card and the sale was made.

As he set foot outside the store, another wave of nervousness hit him. What he had just done was very important... just as tonight was.

After all, it wasn't every night he was going to propose to the one woman who had held his heart for so long.

Dana Scully.

Now he only hoped she would say yes.

Rating: G (also some MSR)

Setting: sometime in the future... A few years, I think

Summary: Questions asked.

Dana Scully arrived at Apartment 42, smiling softly. They had been 'dating' for a few years already, though keeping things between them very discreet. No one outside their mothers knew the truth, though rumours had already been long since flying at work. Margaret Scully and Mrs. Mulder had been delighted at the turn of events.

"Mulder?" Dana Scully knocked on the door of Mulder's apartment and the door swung open. "Mulder are you in here?"

She peeked inside to see a normal table set up in place of his normal coffee table, which seemed to be tilted and leaning against the wall in haphazard fashion. There was also a karaoke machine set up in the corner, hooked up to the television. The moment she stepped into the apartment, the music started, Mulder's voice singing softly.

"When I get older losing my hair,
Many years from now.
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine."

'Mulder's at it again.' Dana thought, grinning.

As though reading her mind, Mulder emerged from his kitchen, carrying a wireless microphone and a drink in one hand. Mulder held the microphone and handed Scully the drink. She sipped it and grinned. Root beer.

"If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door,
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.
You'll be older too,
And it you say the word,
I could stay with you."

Mulder gestured at a chair and she sat down as he continued the song. Though it wasn't patently obvious, Mulder's heart was pounding out of his chest.

"Mulder, what are you planning?" she asked, but he didn't answer, at least not directly.

Watching him, she sat in the chair. The smile on her face more than warmed Mulder's heart.

"I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone.
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride,
Doing the garden, digging the weeds,
Who could ask for more.
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.
Every Summer we can rent a cottage,
In the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera Chuck & Dave"

He reached the final verse, his hand over his heart, a mischievous glimmer in his eyes.

"Send me a postcard, drop me a line,
Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four."

With that, the song was over.

Mulder reached over to pick something up from the table before dropping to one knee.

"Dana Katherine Scully, will you do me the honour of becoming my wife?"

Category: MSR, V
Setting: a few years in the future.

Summary: Questions answered, a ring of gold, a dance, and someone has to be told.

Mulder reached over and picked something up from the table before dropping to one knee in front of her.

"Dana Katherine Scully, will you do me the honour of becoming my wife?"

Dana smiled brightly, leaning in and kissing him before she said anything.

"I never thought you'd ask! Yes, of course I will!" Her eyes and her very soul were shining brightly.

Right about that time, the next song started up in the karaoke machine. Mulder grinned brightly before he started singing again.

"Let's all get up and dance to a song
That was a hit before your mother was born.
Though she was born a long, long time ago
Your mother should know (Your mother should...)
Your mother should know (...know.)
Sing it again."

Mulder slipped the ring, an oval cut emerald with a small diamond on either side, onto her ring finger. She smiled and the emerald shone as brightly as her eyes.

"Let's all get up and dance to a song
That was a hit before your mother was born.
Though she was born a long, long time ago
Your mother should know (Your mother should...)
Your mother should know (...know.)"

Pulling Dana to her feet, he took her into his arms and proceeded to dance with her, all the while still singing the song. His voice gentle in her ear. She laughed softly.

"Lift up your hearts and sing me a song
That was a hit before your mother was born.
Though she was born a long, long time ago
Your mother should know (Your mother should...)
Your mother should know (Aaaah.)
Your mother should know (Your mother should...)
Your mother should know (Aaaah.)
Sing it again."

Right then, he dipped her, then followed up with a kiss.

Memories were recalled of when they had danced just after they finally revealed their mutual feelings. They seemed to do a lot of dancing.

"Da-da-da-da...
Though she was born a long, long time ago
Your mother should know (Your mother should...)
Your mother should know (Yeah.)
Your mother should know (Your mother should...)
Your mother should know (Yeah.)
Your mother should know (Your mother should...)
Your mother should know (Yeah.)"

"Mulder..." Dana murmured. "My mother isn't *that* old..."

He looked at her and caught the amused glint in her eye.

"I know, Dana... I'm just saying... I think she should know about what we've decided... I'm going to call my mother from your mother's...

After all, they both deserve to know."

She smiled back at him.

"You're right. How about we eat first, though? I have this lovely dinner planned."

"Okay."

Title: The Beatles Files: 31. Drive My Car
Rating: G
Category: MSR

Summary: Singing and driving on the way to Margaret Scully's with news.

They got into the car after dinner and headed over to Dana's mother's home. Both knew the route by heart, but Dana let Fox drive. In the mean time, she slipped a CD into the car's CD player. When the music began, Mulder immediately recognized it and grinned, singing along as he was won't to do.

"Asked a girl what she wanted to be
She said baby, can't you see
I wanna be famous, a star on the screen But you can do something in between
Baby you can drive my car
Yes I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And baby I love you"

At that last line, he glanced over at Scully with a very big grin on his face. After all, it was not every day he asked the woman he loved, and he had loved her for a *VERY* long time, to marry him. It was also not every day that she would accept and make him the happiest man on the planet, if not in the universe.

Scully took the next verse while Mulder listened.

"I told a girl that my prospects were good
And she said baby, it's understood
Working for peanuts is all very fine
But I can show you a better time

Baby you can drive my car
Yes I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And baby I love you"

Scully had taken that last line in a loud speaking voice to make certain she was heard over the music and the singers.

"'Love you too, Babe." Mulder grinned. "ANd no, that is not a comment on your weight."

Scully beamed a bright smile at him. Then she rolled her eyes as they hit traffic, and were forced to slow down.

"Beep beep'm beep beep yeah
Baby you can drive my car
Yes I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And baby I love you"

"Beep beep indeed," Scully said, and Mulder laughed.

"Only we would run into traffic on the way to your mother's." he answered.

"It's an X-file." Scully grinned.

Mulder started singing again.

"I told a girl I can start right away
And she said listen babe I got something to say
I got no car and it's breaking my heart
But I've found a driver and that's a start"

"Fox, you're a nut... and I love you for it." she murmured. Mulder grinned and kept singing.

"Baby you can drive my car
Yes I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And baby I love you

Beep beep'm beep beep yeah
Beep beep'm beep beep yeah
Beep beep'm beep beep yeah
Beep beep'm beep beep yeah"

After a fifteen minute delay on a Saturday evening, they broke through traffic and arrived presently at Scully's mother's house.

Mulder knocked on Margaret Scully's front door. She opened it and was not-so-surprised to see both he and Scully there.

"Mom, we-"

"Hello, Fox." Mulder's mother came to the door as well.

"Mom, Mrs. Mulder, we have something to tell you."

Summary: Mulder and Scully let their parents know of their decision.

Mulder knocked on Margaret Scully's door. She opened it and was not-so-surprised to find both he and Scully there.

"Mom, we-"

"Hello Fox." Mulder's mom came to the door as well.

"Mom, Mrs. Mulder, we have something to tell you."

There was an odd sound from the radio as the oldies station suddenly started on a song and their mothers looked at them both strangely as Dana Scully and Fox Mulder both proceeded to burst out into howls of laughter...

"Margaret, I believe either they have gotten punch drunk, or..."

The tone of voice was low and teasing.

Though Mulder's mother did not finish her statement, Mrs. Scully smiled anyway. She understood.

"I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me.
She showed me her room, isn't it good, Norwegian wood?"

Scully laughed, remembering their trip to Norway, and the rapid aging which had come upon them. It was not exactly what she would have considereed to be a paradise cruise, but it wasn't an experience she would ever trade in, especially as she had gotten to see what Mulder would look like years in the future.

"She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere,
So I looked around and I noticed there wasn't a chair."

Scully gestured along with the song and Mulder lipsynched the second line of that section before he knelt in front of Scully, taking her hand in his own.

Mrs. Scully and Mrs. Mulder traded looks. They had gotten to know one another during the time their children had taken them to lunch for the news that they had come to some important realizations, and, though not quite fast friends, they were finding a confidante with similar experiences during their married lives, though they seemed to be on the extreme ends of each.

"I sat on a rug, biding my time, drinking her wine.
We talked until two and then she said, "It's time for bed".
She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh.
I told her I didn't and crawled off to sleep in the bath.
And when I awoke I was alone, this bird had flown.
So I lit a fire, isn't it good, Norwegian wood."

When the song finally ended, Mulder and Scully traded looks. It appeared that they were trying *not* to burst out laughing.

"Fox, what is it?" Mrs. Mulder asked.

"Well... Mom, Mrs. Scully... I asked Dana to marry me this evening and she's agreed."

Summary: Mulder serenades Scully in front of both their mothers.

"Fox, what is it?" Mrs. Mulder asked.

"Well... Mom, Mrs. Scully... I asked Dana to marry me this evening and she's agreed."

Mulder began to sing from his position on his knees in front of Dana and their mothers as the next song on the radio began.

"Oh! Darling, please believe me
I'll never do you no harm
Believe me when I tell you
I'll never do you no harm"

Dana looked at Mulder. She felt extremely happy. At the same time, though, she felt like laughing. Mulder was acting... well, like a man in love.

'Which he is... with you, Dana Katherine Scully. Remember the ring on your finger!' her conscience spoke up and she beamed Mulder with a brilliant smile.

"Oh! Darling, if you leave me
I'll never make it alone
Believe me when I beg you
Don't ever leave me alone

When you told me you didn't need me anymore
Well you know I nearly broke down and cried
When you told me you didn't need me anymore
Well you know I nearly broke down and died"

The look in both their eyes said that they both remembered the time the X-Files had been shut down. It had been a dark time for both of them, though Mulder seemed to take it harder as Scully had heard he had been placed on wire-tap duties. Not the most exciting thing in the world, especially after chasing mutants and strange phenomenon.

"Oh! Darling, if you leave me
I'll never make it alone
Believe me when I tell you
I'll never do you no harm

When you told me you didn't need me anymore
Well you know I nearly broke down and cried
When you told me you didn't need me anymore
Well you know I nearly broke down and died"

He got to his feet, took Dana into his arms and sung along with the last bit of the song.

"Oh! Darling, please believe me
I'll never let you down
Believe me when I tell you
I'll never do you no harm"

"That's wonderful!" Mrs. Mulder's smile was gentle yet bright.

"Yes, it is. ANd I trust you will take care of my baby girl."

"Always... even if she *can* kick my butt."

"And often does, Mulder." Dana grinned.

Mulder's mother smiled warmly. She was glad in her heart that her dear son had finally found someone who dearly loved him.

"Come, now... this calls for a celebration. Come in and sit down.

I'll get something." Margaret Scully said. "We have a wedding to plan."

They all sat down. The planning for the wedding began.

Summary: Waiting outside Skinner's office.

Fox Mulder and Dana Scully sat in the waiting area outside Assistant Director Walter Skinner's office. As they sat there, the song currently playing on the radio caught their attention.

"Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday."

Mulder sighed. They had just returned from a case and things had gone badly. From all reports, one of the agents they had been working with had reported something abnormal in the agents' relationship, namely that they HAD one, and now Skinner had probably called them up to read them the riot act.

"Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be,
There's a shadow hanging over me.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly."

"Well, Mulder, it looks like we're in for it now... the X-Files will probably be closed... and right when we're getting some real answers..."

Scully's voice trailed off as she looked up into his eyes. The Engagement Ring she never took off except to bathe still glimmered from the finger Mulder had set it on almost a month ago.

She so much wanted to kiss him, and knew he wanted to kiss her as well, but both knew this was neither the time nor the place for such a public display of affection, especially as they were going to be called on the carpet by Skinner, and she knew they were both going to lie to him if necessary.

"True... but somehow it doesn't feel as bad as it used to, what with you and I spending more time together away from the office and all."

Mulder's smile was small, but significant.

"Why she had to go I don't know she wouldn't say.
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Mm mm mm mm mm."

"Agents Mulder and Scully, the Assistant Director will see you now," his assistant said.

They walked in, and Skinner gestured for them to be seated.

"I have some good news and some bad news..." Skinner said, looking at Mulder and Scully.

Additional disclaimer: The idea to split the X-Files, and department names, I *believe*, are originally Juliettt's. Either that or something close to it. Also Juliettt's idea originally is the separation of Mulder and Scully before they get married. however, the twist put on it is mine. If I've inadvertently taken an idea someone else had before me, I apologize. I did not do so deliberately.

Summary: A new start for the X-Files.

"I have some good news, and some bad news..." Skinner said, looking at Mulder and Scully.

"What's the bad news, sir?" Mulder asked.

"The X-Files are going to remain open but you both will be getting new partners."

"What's the good news, then?" Mulder's voice was on the edge of panic.

"I'm keeping the X-Files open, but splitting them into two separate departments allowing for interdepartmental swapping. Agent Desmond Jones will be assisting Agent Scully in the Paranormal Sciences department, and Special Agent Molly Richards will be assisting Agent Mulder in the Unusual and Unexplained Phenomenon department. As I have said, though, the departments are to be interdependent."

"Exactly why are we being split up,sir?"

"Well, according to all reports, as well as some very confirming visual evidence, you and Agent Scully have a relationship that goes beyond merely professional."

"What visual evidence?"

"The engagement ring on your finger, Agent Scully."

"Sir, I wasn't aware that my personal business was cause for a separation between myself and Agent Mulder. I have friends who aren't involved with anyone wear a ring on this finger. It is, to use a phrase I heard on television once, used to keep away unwanted suitors."

Skinner handed her a folder, which she opened. Mulder, looking over her shoulder, flushed from embarassment.

The first of several photos showed the two Agents in a close embrace. While that would not be damaging, the kiss that was clearly evident between them was.

"Now you see why you have to be split up."

"Sir, who do we report to, in that case?" Scully asked.

"Me, Agent Scully. That much has not changed."

A spark of recollection crossed Scully's face. "Jones and Richards? Sir, why are you splitting them up? They are a good team too."

"For about the same reason you are, except they hid the facts better than you did. Agent Jones married Agent Richards about six months ago, but kept it secret. Both came in this morning with that news, transfer requests for both of them into the X-Files Division, and the news that Agent Richards is expecting."

Before Skinner could continue, the phone rang.

"Skinner..."

Mulder and Scully traded looks, smiling. Both were thinking the same thing.

"Desmond has a barrow in the market place
Molly is the singer in a band
Desmond says to Molly-girl I like your face
And Molly says this as she takes him by the hand.

Obladi oblada life goes on bra
Lala how the life goes on
Obladi Oblada life goes on bra
Lala how the life goes on."

Mulder remembered how they had met their friends. It was karaoke night at their favorite hangout, and Molly had a good singing voice.

Desmond Jones had complemented her on it and she'd blushed. Over the course of the next few months, they'd seen Desmond and Molly together more and more often, then on a case, they'd seen how the two other agents closeness enhanced their partnership even more.

"Desmond takes a trolley to the jewelers store
Buys a twenty carat golden ring
Takes it back to Molly waiting at the door
And as he gives it to her she begins to sing.

Ob-la-de, Ob-la-da, life goes on, bra
Lala How the life goes on
Ob la de Ob la da life goes on bra
La la how the life goes on."

Scully remembered the day she and Mulder had gotten the invitations to Desmond and Molly's wedding. It gave them hope that it was possible for them to be together and still work together.

"In a couple of years they have built
A home sweet home
With a couple of kids running in the yard
Of Desmond and Molly Jones.

Happy ever after in the market place
Desmond lets the children lend a hand
Molly stays at home and does her pretty face
And in the evening she still sings it with the band.

Ob-la-de, Ob-la-da, life goes on, bra
La la how the light goes on
Ob-la-de, Ob-la-da life goes on, bra
La la how the light goes on.

Happy ever after in the market place
Molly lets the children lend a hand
Desmond stays at home and does his pretty face
And in the evening she's a singer with the band.

And if you want some fun-take Obladi Oblada."

"Alright. Send them in." Skinner's setting the phone down on the base startled them into looking back to him.

"Sir? Are we dismissed?" Mulder was the first to speak up.

"Not yet. You have to meet your new partners."

The door opened and in walked a tall, slender, African-American woman, her hair smoothed back, accompanied by a tall, somewhat imposing man with hair far redder than Scully's and intense, dark blue eyes.

"Please come in, Agent Jones, Agent Richards. Do have a seat."

They pulled up chairs next to where Mulder and Scully sat and sat down, their body language doing all the talking for them.

"I just explained to Mulder and Scully what will happen for all four of you. Agent Richardson, Agent Jones, I would like to welcome you to the X-Files Division. You will be reporting to Agents Mulder and Scully, respectively, who then report to me."

"Uh... sir, I hate to ask this, but where are we going to get more room in the basement office to fit four agents? Right now, we barely have enough room for two."

Skinner smiled. "I forgot to mention that you all will be moved up to the fifth floor and each of you will get your own office space. You will also have an office assistant assigned to you who will help with reports, though not write them."

"Thank you, sir."

"As I figure you want to get to know one another, you are all dismissed. Oh, and Agents Mulder and Scully?"

"Yes, sir?" they both answered together.

"Congratulations... both on and off the record." Skinner's facial expression still remained neutral, but there was a hint of a smile in his eyes.

They all walked out of Skinner's office and proceded to shake hands and grin. Mulder and Scully had met Desmond Jones and Molly Richards during a case several years back. Desmond was more of a lab technician who did field work as well, and Molly was the ambitious field agent.

Though trust was slow in coming, Richards and Jones had gradually proved themselves to Mulder and Scully while they had been working in tandem on a few cases. When Desmond and Molly had decided to get married, Dana and Mulder had been invited to the wedding. They all stood outside the Assistant Director's office trading silly smiles.

"Who is partner'd with whom?" Desmond Jones' accent was Boston with a hint of Britain.

"You are going to be my partner, Desmond. Molly's going to work with Mulder as a partner, though we are all going to be working together in the same department." Scully smiled as they headed for the basement.

"Hey, Molly, congrats on the baby... Skinner told us. Keeping your wedding a secret wasn't easy... glad we don't have to anymore."

Mulder said.

"Mulder, why did Skinner congratulate you?" Molly Richards Jones asked.

"We're engaged..."

"That's wonderful! How long has it been? And why didn't you tell us sooner?"

"Well, we were afraid to get in trouble, but since we slipped up, it doesn't matter anymore." Mulder had the good sense to look embarassed.

"Come on, then. Let's go to lunch. My treat." Desmond smiled.

Rating: G
Category: MSR, V

Summary: the morning of a wedding

Fox Mulder woke up with the sun shining through the curtains of the room. He sighed as he realized he was alone. The radio played softly, indicating that it was right about time to get up.

He'd spent the last night packing up and doing a final check on the apartment he would no longer be needing. Most of his stuff had already been moved or, as in the case of his video collection, given away.

Frohike had been delighted to finally get the videos and had taken him out for dinner as thanks.

"Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say it's all right"

He had things which needed to be done, not the least of which was to get down to the church for a wedding. He didn't want to be late because it was a very special day.

"Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right"

He smiled. After all, it wasn't every day he was going to get married... to the most beautiful woman in his life. The only woman in his life for the last several years.

"Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right"

He remembered the evening he'd proposed... and the brilliant smile he'd been shown after she'd accepted. Like sunlight on water. And she had wondered what had taken him so long to ask!

"Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...

Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been clear
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say it's all right
It's all right"

As the song ended, he turned off the radio and began to unplug things and straighten other things up.

The phone rang and he reached over and picked it up.

"Mulder."

"It's me. You awake?" Dana Scully's voice smiled.

"Hi! Yup. I'm awake." His smile would have blinded anyone in the area had they seen it.

"It's the big day."

"Yeah, and I didn't sleep too well, especially since there is only the couch and a few things left here."

Scully laughed. "Mulder, you slept on that couch for years!"

"Yeah, but since I've been sleeping next to you at night, I've slept a lot better. Right now, I think my neck hurts... and I feel awful lonely."

"I'll make it up to you tonight, Mulder." she grinned into the phone.

"Ooh, Scully... sounds tempting."

"I'm not going to go there right now, Mulder. I have to go. Mom's outside waiting to get me to the hairdressers before I get to the church.

Don't be late."

"Promise."

The connection was broken and Mulder grinned. It was the *big* day... and he had a lot to do yet. He hung up the phone and folded the blanket which had just been covering him.

There was a knock on the door. Throwing the blanket aside, he went to answer it. It was the moving crew: Skinner and the two Scully brothers. After all, they knew where Dana's new place was.

"Ok, Mulder, we're ready." Skinner smiled.

They got started moving.

Title: The Beatles Files: 37. All You Need Is Love
Rating: Oh, come on... you all know by now... G, and MSR.
Spoilers: Uh... here? Alternate universe... but I *like* this one! =)

Summary: it's a very important day in the lives of Mulder and Scully.

Dana Scully was waiting in a church. She was staring out a window at the bright, brilliant blue of the sky when she heard the door open and close, the rustle of fabric, and footsteps behind her.

"Dana, honey, when was the last time you had something to eat?" her mother's eyes were full of concern.

"Ummm... I don't know... I wasn't hungry this morning, Mom." she shrugged, feeling like she was going through the day in molasses. She concentrated on keeping her breathing and heartbeat calm.

"Dear, you really should eat something. I don't want you fainting during your important day today." Margaret Scully rushed out of the room, leaving Dana to her own thoughts.

Absently, her fingers found the button on the CD remote and pressed play.

"Love, Love, Love.
Love, Love, Love.
Love, Love, Love.

There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game.
It's easy."

She blinked, the words of the song muffled through her ears, but went straight to her brain. She thought about all the things she had learned in her life. There was a lot of gameplaying going on, but that was par for the course with her career choice as an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"Nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time.

It's easy.

All you need is love.
All you need is love.
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need."

She had been dying of cancer... but she, along with her partner, had managed to figure out a way to force it into remission. Along the way, she'd managed to find the love of her life... even though he'd been there for her the entire time. In fact, he'd been there for her even *before* the crisis with cancer.

"All you need is love.
All you need is love.
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need.

Nothing you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.

It's easy."

Certainly, finding ways for them to be together wasn't easy, but it was well worth the fight. And now...

"Dana, come over here and have a bite to eat. The last thing you need is to have low blood sugar." Her mother had returned.

She turned around and walked over to the table where her mother had set the tray down. As she sat down, her mother busied herself gathering Dana's things together in preparation for the wedding. Studying her hands, she smiled at the diamond and emerald ring on her finger. Her mother paused and smiled at her.

"All you need is love.
All you need is love.
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need."

"All you need is love..." Dana sung softly to the song.

"You know, if I didn't know better, I'd say you were nervous."

Maggie Scully commented.

"Well... do we have everything we need? Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue?"

"Your cross is old, and your garter is blue. Fox told me to give this to you." Margaret Scully handed her daughter a small velvet box.

"And I'm loaning you my pearl bracelet, which was a gift from your father the day we got married. I'm suspecting it's been in the family for generations, but I can't be certain."

Dana opened the box to reveal a long strand of pearls.

"All you need is love (Paul: All together, now!)
All you need is love. (Everybody!)
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need (love is all you need)."

"Mom... look..." Dana pulled the pearls out of the box, as they were just loosely set in it, and dangled them in her fingers. "Oh, god, only Mulder..."

"They're beautiful." Maggie smiled.

"Yee-hai!
Oh yeah!
She loves you, yeah yeah yeah.
She loves you, yeah yeah yeah."

"I'm really... oh, god, Mom, I love him so much..." she had to concentrate to keep the tears from her eyes.

"I know, Dana. Come on. Let's get you ready. You're going to get married today."

About fifteen minutes later, there was a knock at the door.

"Agent Scully? Are you in there?"

"It's Skinner." Scully smiled. "Come in, sir."

The door opened and Skinner stood framed in the doorway.

"It's time. Mulder's waiting." he announced.

Dana stood and her mother pressed the bouquet into her daughter's hand. "Let's go."

Summary: A first dance as husband and wife.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present Mr. and Mrs. Fox Mulder... now I realize this is not the way they are doing things, but it's traditional to introduce the newlyweds as such at their wedding reception."

"Sir, when have *we* *EVER* been traditional?" A voice piped up from the hall where the reception was being held.

"You have a point, Agent Mulder." Walter Skinner grinned as he watched Fox Mulder and Dana Scully walk to the centre of the dance floor for their first dance as husband and wife.

Mulder was dressed in his best tuxedo and Scully wore an ivory wedding gown with loads of lace and pearls. The dress didn't quite reach the floor, but it was beautiful, especially on her.

"Something in the way she moves
Attracts me like no other lover
Something in the way she woos me

I don't want to leave her now
You know I believe her now"

"Love you... Dana Katherine Scully..." Mulder murmured in her ear, lightly kissing her cheek.

"You forgot 'Mulder'..." She smiled.

"You are Scully first. And Mulder's *my* name."

She smiled brightly at him. "Silly Mulder... it's mine now too, remember?"

"Only if I can have yours." he quirked a grin at her and she laughed.

"Okay, we'll share BOTh our names."

The smile they shared could have lit New York City for a month.

"Somewhere in her smile she knows
That I don't need no other lover
Something in her style that shows me

Don't want to leave her now
You know I believe her now"

"Mulder... I'm glad we did this."

"I hope so. We waited long enough."

Mulder felt Scully laugh softly, and he lifted her chin up slightly to kiss her.

"You're asking me will my love grow
I don't know, I don't know
You stick around now it may show
I don't know, I don't know

Something in the way she knows
And all I have to do is think of her
Something in the things she shows me

Don't want to leave her now
You know I believe her now"

The song came to an end and they bowed to the gathered guests who were clapping. Then, the clinking of glasses started and they looked at one another.

"You know the drill..." Dana started.

"Oh, *boy*, do I!" Fox beamed. She laughed.

He swept her into his arms and dipped her before claiming her mouth with his. There were wolf-whistles and cat-calls as they both came up for air with big smiles.

Title: The Beatles Files: 39. Magical Mystery Tour
Rating:G
Classification: MSR (of course!)
Spoilers: None

Summary: What better way to start a life together? *grin*

The guests were dispersing out to the line to see the end of the party. Happiness abounded. The music started up again, and the guests all knew that their hosts picked appropriate music. Especially considering the song just starting was meant to let everyone know that the party was about to conclude.

"Roll up, roll up for the mystery tour.
Roll up, roll up for the mystery tour.
Roll up AND ThAT's AN INVITATION, roll up for the mystery tour.
Roll up TO MAKE A RESERVATION, roll up for the mystery tour.
The magical mystery tour is waiting to take you away,
Waiting to take you away."

Dana Scully was still in her wedding gown of antique lace and pearls when the song she and her husband had agreed would signal their time to leave started. She had been in her dressing room getting ready to go on her honeymoon. What she still hadn't decided was whether or not she was going to stay in her dress.

"Roll up, roll up for the mystery tour.
Roll up, roll up for the mystery tour.
Roll up WE'VE GOT EVERYThING YOU NEED, roll up for the mystery tour.
Roll up SATISFACTION GUARANTEED, roll up for the mystery tour.
The magical mystery tour is hoping to take you away,
Hoping to take you away."

'satisfaction guaranteed. What an idea...' she smiled, listening to the lyrics, trying to distract herself from her inability to make a decision about her clothing. Then again, she was tired.

They'd both been up for a long time already, he moving what remained of his things and she at the hairdressers, and as they'd decided to spend their last night of unmmarried life apart as tradition dicated, neither had slept well either. And they both knew full well that sleeplessness impaired judgement.

"Don't change clothes, sweetheart..." He smiled at her. "I think you look beautiful right now." Her husband's voice drifted in from the doorway. He was also still dressed in the tuxedo he'd managed to purchase for this occasion. The sight of him in it still took her breath away and she suspected that would be the case for quite some time.

She felt the joy well up in her heart and knew she'd made the right choice... not that there was any doubt in her mind that she had.

"Roll up, roll up for the mystery tour.
Roll up, roll up for the mystery tour.
Roll up AND ThAT's AN INVITATION, roll up for the mystery tour.
Roll up TO MAKE A RESERVATION, roll up for the mystery tour.
The magical mystery tour is coming to take you away,
Coming to take you away.
The magical mystery tour is dying to take you away,
Dying to take you away, take you away."

There was a shower of birdseed, confetti, and paper streamers as they walked out into the crowd gathering to send them on their way to their first trip as husband and wife.

"Agent Mulder, Agent Scully, congratulations and enjoy your two week honeymoon." Assistant Director Skinner walked up to them with a small basket in his hand filled with flowers. English Tea Roses. They smelled wondrously beautiful. "Desmond and Molly will watch over your files and cases while you're gone. Well... Desmond will be. Molly's on maternity leave."

Molly Richardson Jones was expecting her first child and was just beginning her maternity leave.

"Very appropriate, sir." Mulder smiled as Dana took the roses in her hand, glancing at Mulder from curiosity.

They got into the waiting limousine and drove off, still in a shower of rose petals and birdseed.

"Mulder, what did you mean by 'very appropriate' when Skinner handed me these roses?" she asked.

"Ah... Dana... that's a surprise. Besides, I remember we both went to Molly's baby shower, so it's appropriate that she is on maternity leave now." Mulder smiled. "Don't you trust me?"

"Not to get into trouble? Mulder, I know better..." Dana teased.

"True... but you will see soon enough," he said, reaching over for two champagne flutes filled with sparkling apple cider, handing one to her.

"Happy Wedding Day, Mrs. Mulder."

Dana took the glass, laughing. "Happy wedding day, Mr. Scully."

"I like that!" Mulder said, grinning as they clinked glasses.

She pulled him closer as they sipped the cider, and kissed him deeply.

The limo continued its drive to Dulles International where a plane waited to take them on honeymoon.

Summary: A serenade by Sir Paul McCartney while on honeymoon.

"Come on, Scully... these were a gift from Desmond and Molly. I think the trip to London was Desmond's idea, and the Paul McCartney concert was Molly's." Mulder grinned at his wife.

"Uh-oh, Mulder, look out... here comes trouble." Scully had been scanning the crowds and saw Phoebe Green headed right for them.

"That's ok, Dana... watch this."

Without another word, Mulder swept her into his arms and kissed her, lovingly. For a time, even in the crowd of people getting to the concert at Wembley, they shut everyone else out.

Suddenly, they heard someone clearing their throat. Looking to see who it was, they saw Victoria Jensen smiling at both of them. Phoebe was nowhere to be seen.

"Mulder, Dana, I want to congratulate you on your marriage. It's about time you two got your act together." She smiled. Then, she handed them an envelope. "Don't open this until after the concert. Enjoy it."

Victoria vanished into the crowd before either of them could say anything.

"Well, we should do what she says, I think." Mulder beamed at Dana.

"Oh, most definitely." She smiled in return.

They went to find their seats, which turned out to be just about front row. Their friends had heard about their *minor* Beatles facination... apparently.

"And here is a song dedication from my friend Victoria Jensen to her friends Fox Mulder and Dana Scully who are visiting from America while on honeymoon." Paul McCartney announced, to the shock and delighted surprise of Mulder and Scully. "It was the favorite of all that I'd written with John Lennon. This song is for you. Congratulations on the marriage."

"To lead a better life I need my home to be here...
Here, making each day of the year
Changing my life with the wave of her hand
Nobody can deny that there's something there"

Mulder took Dana's hand and she leaned against him as he wrapped his arm around her. Their hands were clasped together, fingers intertwined.

"There, running my hands through her hair
Both of us thinking how good it can be
Someone is speaking but she doesn't know he's there I want her everywhere and if she's beside me
I know I need never care
But to love her is to need her everywhere
Knowing that love is to share"

'share... I've always shared my life with him. Even when I hadn't yet realized that I loved him.' Dana's thought made her smile. What she would have not been surprised to learn, though, was that her newlywed husband was thinking almost the exact same thing about her. She looked up at him and saw that he was looking at her.

'I Love you, Dana', his eyes told her.

'I love you too, Mulder.' her eyes replied.

"Each one believing that love never dies
Watching her eyes and hoping I'm always there

I want her everywhere and if she's beside me
I know I need never care
But to love her is to need her everywhere
Knowing that love is to share

Each one believing that love never dies
Watching her eyes and hoping I'm always there

To be there and everywhere
Here, there and everywhere"

By the time the song ended, they were kissing passionately, and Sir Paul had the graciousness to smile at them before going over to kiss his wife, Lady Linda.

Victoria Jensen sat five rows behind them, also attending the concert. She was a great fan of Paul McCartney and a friend of his as well. She smiled, watching her newlywed friends as, once again, they got lost in each other. She had met Desmond and Molly Jones and laughed as they related exactly what a certain song also meant to them.

'Be happy, both of you...' she smiled.

Title: The Beatles Files: 41. She Loves You
Rating:G
Classification: MSR(naturally with this series!)

Summary: Mulder is concerned about how his relationship is going.

Fox Mulder walked into the house he lived in. There was something wrong between himself and his wife. She seemed very distant lately, and, as he had occasionally been known to be insensitive, it left him wondering what he could have done wrong to push her away, like he used to do in the past, but not since they'd cleared the air on the matter.

His wife had had to leave work early, and he was arriving home on time, as usual. Both their partners understood.

As he walked in, the CD player clicked on and a song began to play softly. It had been part of the reason why he and his wife had decided to buy it. It could be programmed to start on a track at any time.

"She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

You think you lost your love.
When I saw her yesterday,
It's you she's thinking of
And she told me what to say.
She says she loves you
And you know that can't be bad.
Yes, she loves you
And you know you should be glad. Ooh!"

'I hope that's the truth.' Mulder thought to himself, listening to the words.

"Wait a minute... I didn't put this CD in this morning..." he mumbled to himself.

Still, he listened to the words of the song being sung by the four scruffy haired lads from Liverpool, England.

"She said you were to know
That she almost lost her mind.
And now she says she knows
You're not the hurting kind.
She says she loves you
And you know that can't be bad.
Yes, she loves you
And you know you should be glad. Ooh!

She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
And with a love like that
You know you should be glad."

'she may not be the hurting kind, but I have hurt, kind of, lately.'

he mused. 'Maybe this is her way of saying "I'm sorry."? Or maybe *I* should be the one apologizing...'

"And now it's up to you,
I think it's only fair,
If I should hurt you, too,
Apologize to her
Because she loves you
And you know that can't be bad.
Yes, she loves you
And you know you should be glad. Ooh!

She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah
And with a love like that
You know you should be glad."

The door opened and he watched as his wife came in the door.

"Fox! I'm glad you're home. Did you get my message?" she asked.

"What message would that be?" he asked, just as the CD started repeating the same track.

"Oh, good, you got the message. I meant it as an apology... and a reassurance."

"You put the CD and programmed it in?"

"Yes, Mulder, I did. And I'm sorry for shutting you out lately. I just didn't want to jump to the wrong conclusions before I knew for certain." she replied.

"Scully, what conclusions would that be?"

"We're going to have a baby. The doctors told me this afternoon, which is why I had to leave the office early." Dana Scully (Mulder) smiled at her husband, whose jaw was now practically on the floor.

"We're... you're... I'm... " Mulder was babbling, but that was all he managed to get out.

Dana laughed, then went over to try and smooth things over, which was a little more difficult.

Fox William Mulder, husband and father-to-be, had fainted.

Title: The Beatles Files: 42. Michelle
Rating: G
Classification: MSR, V, part of a series
Setting: This story takes place years in the future.

Summary: Mulder sings to someone very dear to him.

The sound of a baby crying broke the silence of the night.

"Wha...?" A woman's voice awoke with a start and turned towards the baby monitor sitting on the nightstand.

"Shhh... you rest. I'll get her." a male voice said, quietly. The bedsprings creeked as he got up from bed.

"Thanks, Fox..." the woman's voice was half-muffled by the pillow as she turned over.

She heard the soft padding of his feet out of the bedroom door and inot the nursery.

"Shh... sweetie, Daddy's here..."

Fox Mulder picked up his fussing daughter and rocked her gently in his arms. When she quieted down a little, he started to sing.

"Michelle, ma belle.
These are words that go together well,
My Michelle."

Listening through the room monitor, Dana Scully smiled. Mulder had a soft voice that translated through songs very well. He had demonstrated the ability many times during their courtship, occasionally breaking into song at some amusingly appropriate time. Dana herself felt that the current song was great for a lullaby.

"Michelle, ma belle.
Sont les mots qui vont tres bien ensemble,
Tres bien ensemble.

I love you, I love you, I love you.
That's all I want to say.
Until I find a way
I will say the only words I know that
You'll understand."

Getting out of bed, she walked over to the doorway to the nursery that was just adjacent to their bedroom to look in on her husband and their daughter.

"I need you, I need you, I need you.
I need to make you see,
Oh, what you mean to me.
Until I do I'm hoping you will
Know what I mean.

I love you."

The little girl closed her eyes and drifted back off to sleep as Mulder watched, but he continued singing. Dana could just make out a hint of a smile on the child's face.

"I want you, I want you, I want you.
I think you know by now
I'll get to you somehow.
Until I do I'm telling you so
You'll understand.

I will say the only words I know that
You'll understand, my Michelle."

"That was sweet, Mulder..." Dana smiled, watching her husband put Michelle Samantha Mulder, their daughter, back in her crib, fast asleep.

"Thanks to the wonder of modern technology, you heard that, hmm?"

"Yes... well, the beginning of it, anyway. I heard the rest from here. You are wonderful with her."

"And you should be in bed. You have a long day ahead of you."

"Only if you come back to bed too."

They smiled at one another as Mulder walked back to her.

"Deal."

Title: The Beatles Files: 43. Paperback Writer
Rating: G
Classification: MSR, Series (Of course it's a Series! Why else would I have 'banner-titled' it? *grin*)
Spoilers: Ummm beyond vague ones.

Summary: Would you want your kids to be Paperback Writers?

"Paperback writer"

"Mulder, do you think either of our children will be writing any of the stories we're going to probably tell them about our work in the X-Files?" Dana Scully's voice drifted through the musical bridge at the start of the Beatles song that was playing softly in the background.

Mulder turned to look at his wife, even as he held their two-year-old daughter, Michelle, in his arms. A smile was on his lips.

Michelle laughed and giggled at the song starting. She was already quite fond of the Beatles due in large part to the song which had become her frequently used lullaby. Even if it *was* in French. Mostly. She loved to hear her father sing it to her, and often would not sleep until he had sung it to her at least once. Sometimes, her mother would sing too. It was those times she loved best.

"Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
Based on a novel by a man named Lear
And I need a job, so I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer."

"Well, Dana, I thought that was more our job. Besides, it would make great science fiction if nothing else, you know?" he grinned.

Dana Katherine Scully (Mulder), wife, mother, Special Agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and doctor of forensic medicine ran her fingers lightly over her already swollen midriff.

"Of course, if anyone ever tried to read our case reports, I'm not sure anyone would believe it." she grinned back, teasing.

Both of them knew what it was like to have to *write* case reports, and knew that they'd often tone a lot of things down quite a bit in order for it to get into the realm of believability.

"It's the dirty story of a dirty man
And his clinging wife doesn't understand.
His son is working for the Daily Mail,
It's a steady job but he wants to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.

Paperback writer"

"Ever read the 'Daily Mail', Scully?" Mulder suddenly switched topics, but Scully grinned at him anyway.

"I read the 'Globe and Mail' once, but I don't think that's the same thing. I think the Daily Mail is a London, England paper, and the 'Globe and Mail' is Toronto based."

"Ah... you and your fondness for things Canadian."

"Mulder, the only thing I have a true 'fondness' for is you. And our children."

"So that's why you married me?"

"Mulder, I married you because I love you, and because I knew I was the only one you trusted enough to kick you in the ass when you needed it every now and then."

"'Every now and then'? Is that what you call it? You do it a lot more often than that."

"And you don't enjoy that?"

"Uh... I didn't say that, but I wasn't going to say it in front of our kids."

Still behaving like newlyweds, though they'd been married a few years more than that qualification, they grinned at each other in that intimate, secret way just as the next verse began.

"It's a thousand pages, give or take a few,
I'll be writing more in a week or two.
I can make it longer if you like the style,
I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer."

"I'd say we had more than a thousand pages of case file stuff written, right, Scully?"

"Oh, definitely. As for writing more in a week or two, aren't we supposed to be working on a case file right now?"

"Daddy, what's a case file?" a little voice asked from his shoulder.

"Michelle, dearest of my heart, do you really want to know?" he murmured, though loud enough for Dana to hear as well. He was also smiling.

Michelle just giggled. She was already bright for two years old, and already had her mother's reddish hair, though it was a little closer to her father's dark hair, and had already begun to curl.

"If you really like it you can have the rights,
It could make a million for you overnight.
If you must return it, you can send it here
But I need a break and I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.

Paperback writer

Paperback writer - paperback writer
Paperback writer - paperback writer"

Mulder had taken to singing the last verse of the song to her and by the time he was finished, and the track ended, she was asleep, which had been his intention to start with.

Quietly, her parents put her to bed, and then crept back out into the kitchen of the apartment which they had shared since shortly before their wedding.

"Ooh! Ouch!" Scully paused, and rubbed at her stomach.

"What happened?" Mulder asked, a little worried for his wife.

"He kicked! Mulder, the baby kicked!" The smile on her face had only been brighter three other times. The day he proposed, the day they were married, and the day Michelle had come screaming into their lives.

Fox William Mulder's smile matched his wife's as he placed his hand near where hers was, still feeling their second child move. A look of awe and wonder began to mix in with the smile.

"You're going to have my baby... I don't believe it. You're going to have my baby," he said, tone of astonished wonder, after things had settled down.

"First of all, Mulder, he's *our* baby. And, second of all...

umm... shouldn't we get to work?" Dana Scully teased.

"Lead on, Agent Scully." he grinned.

They sat down in the kitchen and got to work on the case.

Summary: Scully's last few minutes of labor.

Dana Scully was in intense pain. Of course, having been in labor for the past day or so didn't help.

"Breathe... that's it, Dana... it's almost over... okay." Mulder's voice soothed her a little as the contraction ended.

"I don't remember Michelle being this painful to get out," she said tiredly.

"Different children have different labor times." the nurse told her.

"Fox, could you please put in "Abbey Road" and play "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"? I think that would help a little."

"Sure... hang on a second."

Letting go of his wife's sweat-damp hand, he rummaged through the CDs he had brought with them before he found what he was looking for and started the track on endless repeat.

Oh-oh-oh-oh...
Maxwell Edison majoring in medicine
Calls her on the phone
"Can I take you out to the pictures

Joan?"

But as she's getting ready to go

A knock comes on the door..."

"Uh-oh... I think I'm going to have another contraction... and I do want to push..." Dana said, and Mulder took hold of her hand.

"You're just about fully dilated, Dana... you can push at any time." the nurse answered.

"Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon her head
Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead"

"Our child has an interesting sense of humor," Mulder said.

"Must take after you, Mulder..." Dana gasped before she started to push in earnest.

"Back in school again Maxwell plays the fool again
Teacher gets annoyed
Wishing to avoid an unpleasant scene
She tells Max to stay when the class has gone away
So he waits behind
Writing 50 times "I must not be so-o-o-o..."
But when she turns her back on the boy
He creeps up from behind"

"I think this is it!" the nurse said as Dana bore down and pushed with all her might.

"Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon her head
Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead

P.C. Thirty-One said "we caught a dirty one"
Maxwell stands alone
Painting testimonial pictures oh-oh-oh-oh
Rose and Valerie screaming from the gallery
Say he must go free (Maxwell must go free)
The judge does not agree and he tells them so-o-o-o
But as the words are leaving his lips
A noise comes from behind"

"Okay, the baby's out. Now let me get the airway clear..." The nurse turned away to take care of things.

"Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon his head
Bang, Bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that he was dead"

With that, the song ended and was about to hit the repeat when Mulder reached over and stopped it. The newborn's cries clearly drowning out the music.

"Congratulations, Fox and Dana. You are the proud parents of a healthy baby boy." the nurse told them and they smiled greatly.

"What do you want to name him," Mulder whispered into her ear.

"David... Maxwell... Scully." Dana murmured sleepily.

"You heard my wife." Mulder beamed.

When Mulder looked back at his wife, she'd already fallen asleep.

"Would you like to hold him?" the nurse asked.

"Sure." Carefully, the newborn was placed in his father's arms.

"Happy birthday, David." Fox Mulder's face was lit with a brilliant smile.

"Hey, nice going, Dad!" said a familiar voice from the door.

"Hiya, Molly..." Mulder smiled at his 'official' partner. "Here refreshing your memory before you have to go through it again?"

Molly Richardson Jones was pregnant again. She and her husband Desmond were expecting their third child within the next three months.

"Molly, Mulder... I have to talk to you." Desmond stuck his head in the door.

When they both walked out of the room, leaving the door open so that Mulder could keep an eye on Dana, Desmond faced them.

"Word just came down from the top. Skinner's taking a month bereavement leave. His wife, Sharon, just died. In childbirth."

Abruptly, Mulder, who still had David in his arms, turned and went back to sit beside his wife. He had to tell her that one of their friends had just died, and he didn't want her to hear from anyone else.

Spoilers: *Very* vague ones... plus the one from Leonard Betts/Momento Mori.

Summary: Mulder sings his wife and new son to sleep, at the same time Margaret Scully reaches out to Walter Skinner.

Walter Skinner stood in front of the nursery, his expression stoic.

He never took death well, most especially when it seemed he had been helpless to do anything. At the moment, he was looking more at his own reflection in the glass than at the new lives that were in view.

"Walter?" Margaret Scully's voice was behind him. He turned to look at her.

"Hello, Margaret..." he said, tiredly, his voice sounding clearly with unshed tears.

"Congratulations on the birth of Clare... though my condolences on Sharon's passing."

Sharon had made it through the birth just long enough to name their daughter... and Walter had granted her the middle name of Elisabeth. But then, there was a seizure, and she'd slipped away.

"I wonder if God's got a sense of humor... 'cause I'm not laughing if he thinks this is funny."

"I'm sure He doesn't think this is funny..."

"Shouldn't you be with your daughter? Or your granddaughter?"

"She and Fox are doing fine, and Michelle is with her other grandmother at the moment. It was you I was more concerned about. I know what it is like to lose a spouse, and I knew you could use a friend."

Dana Scully was still in the hospital after having given birth. The birth itself had gone normally, but the doctors wanted to test both her and the baby for any abnormalities since Dana had cancer, though it was in remission and had been for several years. Her husband had yet to leave her side, and it seemed their son didn't want to either.

"David isn't sleeping... Geez, Mulder, he's taking exactly after you. That figures." Dana held him close, though he still was whining softly.

"Hey! I sleep! Very well, as a matter of fact, thankyouverymuch.

Of course, if you're not there..."

"Ah-ha! So you admit it!"

They grinned at each other.

"I could try with him what I do with Michelle..."

"I'd love to hear that... I could use the lullaby myself."

Fox Mulder held his son in his arms while sitting on his wife's hospital bed and started to sing, softly.

"If there's anything that you want,
If there's anything I can do,
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you.

I've got everything that you want,
Like a heart that is oh so true.
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you."

"I would like that very much, Margaret... Forgive me, but I'm really in no mood for conversation." Skinner's voice was strained.

"That's okay," she continued to stand there, however, so he wouldn't have to be alone.

'Mulder's a wonderful father...' Dana thought as he continued to sing, softly, and as she remembered how he always sang their older child to sleep.

Mulder had always been involved with the children, even starting to spoil them the moment they'd found out they were going to have Michelle nearly two years ago.

"I got arms that long to hold you
And keep you by my side.
I got lips that long to kiss you
And keep you satisfied, oooh.

If there's anything that you want,
If there's anything I can do,
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you.
From me, to you."

Dana watched and listened as Mulder's low, soft voice worked magic and was gradually putting their days-old son to sleep.

Walter Skinner watched as his daughter, Clare Elisabeth Skinner, slept on with the peace all newborns had. It was then he realized, as he studied the last, best thing Sharon had left with him, that their daughter - even at this early stage - looked exactly like her mother.

"Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you.

I got arms that long to hold you
And keep you by my side.
I got lips that long to kiss you
And keep you satisfied, oooh."

As Mulder finished the song, he put the newborn back into the hospital bassenet and hit the non-emergency nurse-call button. Then, he settled into the chair beside Dana's bed and finished the song while she drifted off as well. The nurse arrived immediately and set off returning David to the nursery.

"Walter, I just want you to know... if there is anything I can do for you, please let me know."

Skinner said nothing, but nodded his affirmation.

Mulder, in the meantime, started on the next verse of the song.

"If there's anything that you want,
If there's anything I can do,
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you.
To you, to you, to you."

When he finished the song, Dana had fallen asleep. The nurses had brought in a roll-away bed for him to sleep on in their half of the private room.

Lightly planting a kiss on his wife's lips, he turned off the light and curled up as close as he could get and held her hand as he dozed off.

"Walter, come on. Visiting hours are over. You're going to spend the night over at my house where I am going to see that you get some food and some sleep. Clare is going to need her father soon."

"Thank you, Margaret, you're very kind to do that."

Walter Skinner and Margaret Scully left the hospital together.

Skinner looked dead tired and infinitely sad.

Dana Scully and Fox Mulder both dreamed of the future... their happy family with their two beautiful children.

Title: The Beatles Files: 46. You're Going to Lose That Girl
Rating: G
Classification: MSR but only faintly, Skinner/Mrs. Scully romance, S favorite... well, none really

Summary: Skinner faces his feelings for Margaret Scully.

"You're going to lose that girl,
You're going to lose that girl.
If you don't take her out tonight,
She's going to change her mind,
And I will take her out tonight,
And I will treat her kind."

As Walter Skinner walked up the walkway to Margaret Scully's home, the words to that song drifted over from the window. He sighed.

Emotionally, things were getting much better for him since his wife, Sharon, had died nearly three years ago. He'd never thought to love again, but Margaret Scully... well, she was another story.

He'd gotten closer to her after Sharon had died in childbirth.

They'd met over the unfortunate incident which had cost Melissa Scully her life and gotten to be friendly. After Sharon's death, however, Margaret Scully had turned from simply a friend to a lifeline to reality and out of serious depression.

"You're going to lose that girl,
You're going to lose that girl.
If you don't treat her right, my friend,
You're going to find her gone,
'cause I will treat her right, and then
You'll be the lonely one."

Since when had Maggie become so interested in the Beatles? The last thing he remembered was that FOx Mulder and Dana Scully were great fans of theirs. They'd even danced to a Beatles song at their wedding, as well as attending a Paul McCartney concert during the honeymoon to England. And Mulder and Scully, along with their partners Richardson and Jones, were out of town on a case.

Pausing, he climbed the porch steps and rang the doorbell.

"You're going to lose that girl,
You're going to lose that girl.
I'll make a point
Of taking her away from you, yeah,
The way you treat her what else can I do?"

Immediately, someone answered.

"Hi, Uncle Walter!" Five year old Michelle S. Mulder's face beamed when she saw her favorite 'surrogate uncle'. She had Scully's face, but with Mulder's eyes and hair. For five years old, she was also almost frighteningly intelligent. It was a fascinatingly cute combination. "You here to pick Clare up?"

"HEllo, Michelle. Your grandmother babysitting?"

Michelle's head bobbed up and down, and she beamed.

"SO that's why Maggie's got Beatles music playing." Skinner smiled.

"Hello, Walter... Here to get Clare?" Margaret Scully appeared at the door, holding a drowsy little boy with red hair in her arms.

Margaret Scully and he had gotten to be very good friends. She'd been a good friend since before her daughter and Mulder had married. It seemed a lifetime ago, and now Sharon was gone. At least he had Clare to remind him of what he and Sharon had. Besides, CLare looked almost exactly like Sharon, even if she was still very young.

"You're going to lose that girl,
You're going to lose that girl.
I'll make a point
Of taking her away from you, yeah,
The way you treat her what else can I do?
If you don't take her out tonight,
She's going to change her mind,
And I will take her out tonight,
And I will treat her kind.
You're going to lose that girl,
You're going to lose that girl"

Skinner looked uncomfortable. Then again, he was never great at expressing his feelings. It had been what had nearly caused he and Sharon to divorce so long ago.

"Uh, well, sort of. Maggie, we have to talk..."

Margaret Scully smiled. "Well, Dana and Fox will be back tomorrow, and the little munchkins should be sleeping relatively soon. Do come in.

Clare is asleep at present."

Walter Skinner walked into the house, looking more than somewhat nervous, and sat down.

"Thanks, Maggie."

"I'll finish doing what I'm doing and then we can talk."

Maggie had already started getting the two children staying with her ready for bed. Michelle had been in her pyjamas when she answered the door, holding tight to a teddy bear which had been Skinner's birthday present to her on her last birthday. David, as far as he could tell, was just about to drop off to sleep.

He looked around and sighed to himself. Did he have any right to feel as he did for this woman, who had four grown children, one of whom was dead indirectly due to him? At the same time, he wondered if she even felt the same way. Friendship was one thing, but being in love was quite another.

"Walter, what's the matter? You look as though your best friend just died. What's wrong?" Margaret Scully sat down beside him.

"It's... well, it has to do with you."

Maggie raised her eyebrows. "Oh?"

"Nothing bad... well, it might be bad if your late husband had anything to say about it." He was so nervous he was stammering.

"I would think Bill would be happy that I am happy with someone who loves me as much I love him." She smiled at him.

Both were speechless and merely sat smiling at each other.

"Grandma, are you and Uncle Walter gonna get married?" Michelle's voice startled both of them.

"Michelle Samantha Mulder, you should be in bed."

There was a giggle from the little girl. "Okay!" Then, she turned, and ran back up the stairs.

When they were sure they were alone again, Margaret smiled. "Out of the mouths of babes..."

Walter opened his arms and Maggie leaned into them. As he leaned back, holding her, he kissed her soundly and then they sat there, smiling at one another.

Title: The Beatles Files: 47. Lady Madonna
Rating: G
Categories: MSR (what *else* from this series?), Mrs. Scully-Skinner Romance

Summary: Three children to babysit... all of them under 7.

Margaret Scully was in a quandary. There was almost complete chaos in her house. It had been a busy time at the FBI, and as a result, she was babysitting her grandchildren, as well as her soon-to-be stepdaughter.

"Grandma, can we play 'Lady Madonna'?" Michelle asked.

Michelle Mulder had Clare Skinner in front of her, and she was quietly braiding the younger girl's hair after having been taught how to braid by both Margaret herself and Fox Mulder.

"Certainly, Michelle." Maggie smiled at her. She had already put the CD with the Beatles favorites of both children in the CD player.

She hit the play button on the remote and the music started.

"Lady Madonna, children at your feet.
Wonder how you manage to make ends meet.
Who finds the money? When you pay the rent?
Did you think that money was heaven sent?"

Maggie smiled at the lyric, remembering times in the past when she and Bill Scully had been short on money and the family had been growing.

If it hadn't been for help from the Navy and from friends, they would have been in trouble several times. During those times, the money really was heaven sent.

"Friday night arrives without a suitcase.
Sunday morning creep in like a nun.
Monday's child has learned to tie his bootlace.
See how they run."

Maggie watched, smiling, as the little girls wriggled to the music while still seated on the floor. They were, thankfully, not a problem.

Michelle's brother, however, was an entirely different story.

David Maxwell Scully was living up to his name, partially derived from the Beatles' song "Maxwell's Silver Hammer," and partially derived from Dana Scully (Mulder) having renamed Mulder 'David' many years before they had gotten to know one another. Either way, the combination was causing quite some chaos.

David was chasing after his grandmother's cat and then crying when the cat clawed him for being mean.

"Grama... cat scratched me." David pouted, tears in his eyes.

"David, dear, you have to stop being so mean to it." Maggie smiled at her grandson.

"Lady Madonna, baby at your breast.
Wonder how you manage to feed the rest.

See how they run.
Lady Madonna, lying on the bed,
Listen to the music playing in your head.

Tuesday afternoon is never ending.
Wednesday morning papers didn't come.
Thursday night you stockings needed mending.
See how they run.

Lady Madonna, children at your feet.
Wonder how you manage to make ends meet."

"Margaret? Margaret, are you in here?" Walter Skinner's voice rang out in the hallway of her home.

"Daddy!!!" Clare got up from where she was having her hair braided and ran to him.

Walter Skinner picked up his daughter in his arms and smiled brightly. Though she still looked frighteningly like Sharon, it was now a trait in her he loved, especially since Clare also adored Maggie. It felt to him as though Sharon was smiling in approval at the way he and their daughter were coping.

"Hello, Walter." Maggie smiled, walking over to kiss him lightly.

"Look who I brought with me." Skinner grinned.

Special Agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder were behind him.

"Daddy! Mommy!" Six-year-old Michelle Mulder ran for Dana Scully and was picked up immediately. "I'm so glad you're back!"

"I missed you too, Michelle..." Dana Scully smiled, swinging her daughter around once before setting her back down on the floor.

"David!" Mulder called over to his wayward son.

David, of course, wasn't listening. He was too busy chasing after the cat... *again*.

"David Maxwell Scully, get over here immediately!" Fox Mulder's voice rang out.

It did the trick, though, getting the little boy's attention.

"Daddy! You back!" David's voice still held traces of a baby lisp.

"Yes, I'm back. And what are you doing?"

"Oh... nothing," David said, innocently, flashing his father a look which caused both of his parents to burst out laughing.

"He's most definitely your son, Mulder," Skinner teased.

"Uh... yeah, that he is. Didn't you have something to ask Maggie?"

Mulder stammered slightly.

"Oh, yes, of course." Skinner looked nervous.

"What is it, Walter?" Maggie asked, bringing out several glasses of iced tea and lemonade.

"Uh, Maggie..." Walter Skinner's voice failed him.

"Yes?" Margaret Scully turned to look at Skinner. There was a question in Walter's eyes and she smiled warmly. "Yes, of course I will."

"That's a proposal?" Mulder asked.

"It is when you know, Walter."

"Shouldn't we start planning?" Scully asked.

"Mommy, are they gonna get married?" Michelle asked.

"I believe so, Michelle."

"Well it's about time!" Michelle declared loudly.

There was general laughter heard.

Rating: G
Classification: MSR (of course!), Skinner/Mrs. Scully romance
Spoilers: uh... none, really.

Summary: It's another moment to celebrate...

Walter Skinner wondered if he was really going to get away with what he had planned. The whole thing was crazy, but he'd been talked into it by the person he was accompanying. Then again, considering who his companion was at present, he knew he had a better chance of pulling it off than most people. That thought made him smile.

As he studied his companion, his ears caught the lyrics of the song which had just started on the car radio. It wasn't often Walter Skinner smiled, but the grin on his face was a wonderful sight.

"My love don't give me presents.
I know that she's no peasant,
Only ever has to give me love forever and forever,
My love don't give me presents,
Turn me on when I get lonely,
People tell me that she's only
Foolin', I know she isn't."

Fox Mulder grinned, listening to the song lyrics. He'd pulled off the coup of the century. Not only that, he knew that both parties involved wouldn't mind furthering their own involvement. He'd heard as much from his daughter, who insisted on telling her parents everything she'd seen happen between Granma Maggie, and "Uncle" Walter.

"She don't give the boys the eye,
She hates to see me cry,
She is happy just to hear me say
That I will never leave her.
She don't give the boys the eye,
She will never make me jealous,
Gives me all her time as well as lovin',
Don't ask me why.

She's a woman who understands.
She's a woman who loves her man.
She's a woman, she's a woman."

Mulder pulled up into the driveway of the house he and his wife had just moved into. Their kids were going to start school in a year and he wanted them to have the normal childhood that neither of them had had growing up... staying in one school, growing up knowing both parents and the other sibling... sibling rivalry even.

"Hello, Walter. Picking Clare up?" Maggie Scully smiled, seeing him start up the walk. Behind her, Walter Skinner could see his daughter Clare peeking out the door, a mischievous smile on her face.

"Hi, Maggie." He smiled, kissing her softly. Then, he leaned over and murmured in her ear. Whatever it was, Margaret Scully beamed, smiled, and kissed him again.

Mulder walked over to his wife, who had come home early to help prepare the house for the special occasion. "Hey, Scully, Skinner's car should be ready in the morning."

"That's good, Mulder." Dana Scully (Mulder now too, for the last several years) smiled at her husband. Mulder leaned in and kissed her, shutting everyone else out, at least for a moment.

"Dana, Fox, we're going to need your help." Maggie said, walking back to the house.

"What is it, Mom?" Dana asked.

"Walter and I are going to get married. This weekend. I thought it would be the right time, as did Walter. Charles is in town, as is Bill, and both of them brought their families. Can you help with the plans?"

"Oh, Mom, that's great! Congratulations to you both."

Fox Mulder stood there, first shaking Skinner's hand, though both of them traded knowing looks, and then hugging his mother-in-law.

"Now, Walter, come in and we can all have dinner. Then, it's time to start planning." Maggie said.

They walked into the house and for a while, the house seemed to glow brighter with plans and anticipation.

Summary: It's Mother's Day. Mulder and the kids decide to surprise Scully.

Dana Scully turned over in bed, reaching out a hand to search for her husband. Blearily, she raised her head from the pillow when her hand hit empty bed.

She heard the sound of footsteps, small and soft, running away from the open bedroom door and down the stairs. Blinking a few more times, she yawned and stretched as she heard music begin.

The source of the music, she recognized, was the intercom system which was piping the music up from the entertainment system downstairs.

"Good Day Sunshine, Good Day Sunshine, Good Day Sunshine
I need to laugh and when the sun is out
I've got something I can laugh about
I feel good in a special way
I'm in love and it's a sunny day"

"Happy Mother's Day, Mommy!" A little boy's voice, accompanied by those same small, soft footsteps before there was a thump and a leap, and a little boy with dark hair, hazel eyes, and her own smile jumped onto the bed. His hair looked still uncombed, and he was still in his Marvin the Martian pajamas.

"Good Day Sunshine, Good Day Sunshine, Good Day Sunshine
We take a walk, the sun is shining down
Burns my feet as they touch the ground
Good Day Sunshine, Good Day Sunshine, Good Day Sunshine"

"Happy Mother's Day, Momma," a little girl's voice spoke from the doorway before she too landed on the bed, a bundle of red hair, green eyes, and purple cotton nightshirt. The little boy giggled as his sister reached over and tickled him on his bare feet. "I'm gonna get ya David..," she teased in a tone she'd learned from her father.

"Then we'd lie beneath the shady tree
I love her and she's loving me
She feels good, she knows she's looking fine
I'm so proud to know that she is mine."

She could hear Mulder's soft voice singing as he came up the stairs.

"Good Day Sunshine, Good Day Sunshine, Good Day Sunshine"

"Happy Mother's Day, Scully." He smiled at her. "Michelle and David kinda decided to run ahead of me."

Mulder leaned down and kissed his wife on the lips.

"Eeew!" said both children at once upon seeing their parents and Fox Mulder and Dana Scully(Mulder) started to laugh.

After putting the tray down on the bed, they all crowded around for the traditional 'Mommy's Breakfast in Bed'. Grandma (both of them) would be arriving around 11 for lunch.

Rating:G
Category: V, hinted at MSR
Timeframe: Future at least 6 years.

Summary: A child asks for a lullaby

The first day of school would be in the morning. Dana Scully went to check up on her children. As she passed the door to her daughter's room, she could hear her husband with their daughter, singing the usual lullaby he sang when she couldn't sleep, she went to the next room. She found her son with the light still on.

"You, young man, have an early day tomorrow."

"Mommy... I can't sleep."

"First day of school tomorrow. Why am I not surprised." She smiled at him, tucking him a bit more securely. "David, what do you want me to do?"

"Sing to me... the way Daddy usually does... with both me and Michelle."

"I'll do my best." She smiled, taking a breath before starting.

She had a song already in mind.

"Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullabye

Golden slumbers fill your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullabye

Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullabye"

David's eyes were starting to glaze over when Dana heard the door creak and click shut. He smiled drowsily at the new arrival in his room but didn't say anything.

"Want me to help you with the next part of the song?" Mulder's voice was low and warm in her ear. She nodded.

He sat down on the bed and began to sing.

Summary: Getting a child to sleep.

"Want me to help you with the next part of it?" Mulder's voice was low and warm in her ear. She nodded.

He sat down on the bed and began to sing. Their voices harmonised sweetly. Apparently Mulder had heard what Scully had been singing and knew the natural progression from the songs on the CD.

"Boy, you gotta carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time
Boy, you gotta carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time

I never give you my pillow
I only send you my invitation
And in the middle of the celebrations
I break down

Boy, you gotta carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time
Boy, you gotta carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time"

Before they could proceed any farther, they glanced towards their son and noticed he was asleep. Both smiled and then got up to leave the room, Dana stopping to dim the lights.

"Michelle asleep too?" she asked after they'd quietly stepped back into the living room. Mulder nodded.

"It only took the usual lullaby to put her to sleep."

Dana smiled. "Always works like a charm."

"C'mon. We've got work to do. Skinner's gonna have our butts if we don't finish this report, even if we *do* have agents working under us now."

"You always know how to brighten an evening, Mulder." She smiled at him.

"Do you believe in an afterlife?" It was an old question.

"I'd settle for a life in this one."

"Agent Scully, I do believe you've got it." Mulder grinned at his wife, who playfully swiped and deliberately missed him.

They got to work.

"Michelle, your pool is ready!"

Dana Scully heard the male voice shout in the back yard from the bedroom of the little girl in question.

"Mommy, Daddy's got the pool ready! Can David and I go out and play?"

"David's been helping your father. You can go and find him and Daddy.

I'll be out in a minute."

The little girl raced out of her bedroom in the bright green bathing suit they had just bought. Her long, curling, dark hair was tied back in a braid and Scully sighed remembering the picture Mulder always hung onto of Samantha. Michelle, through no fault of her own, bore more than a passing resemblance to the missing Mulder... and she was also nearly the age when-

"Whoa!" an indignant shout followed by a splash from the back yard broke through Dana's train of thought... and she was glad. She hadn't liked where the thoughts had been leading.

Dana ran out of the room to the back porch where her husband already stood, watching the children play in the pool. He looked calm and relaxed and she was glad they'd been dragged out of DC and its environs to go on vacation in Maryland. The house had belonged to an old Scully family friend and the friend had willed it to Dana when he died a few years back.

There were the faint strains of old, familiar music playing, but she couldn't quite place it.

"I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus' garden in the shade
He'd let us in, knows where we've been
In his octopus' garden in the shade"

"David, listen!" Michelle commented, just as the little boy gave his sister a spray of water to the face.

"I'd ask my friends to come and see
An octopus' garden with me
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus' garden in the shade."

"Michelle... its... its..." David was so excited, he could barely speak.

"We would be warm below the storm
In our little hideaway beneath the waves
Resting our head on the sea bed
In an octopus' garden near a cave"

Michelle looked towards the patio glass doors where her parents stood watching.

"Mommy! Daddy! The ice cream truck is here! Can I have some?"

Though they had only been here two days thus far, Michelle already knew the signs of the ice cream truck coming.

"Only if you take your brother with you!" Fox Mulder said, gesturing for them to come in for a moment. "Can they get ice cream, Scully?"

Mulder dug into the pocket of his jeans for his wallet and watched Michelle and David's eyes light up.

"Sure, Mulder, it's early enough... Mom won't be over for a while yet and we aren't going to be eating until then. It was nice of her to insist we come down here to get away from work and all."

"Yeah." Mulder grinned. "And with Michelle and David on spring break from school, it made the decision all the easier." He handed Michelle a few bills. "Remember, sweetie, you have to get things for your brother as well."

"Yes, Daddy." Michelle and David each planted a kiss on Mulder's cheek before running out to the ice cream truck.

"We would sing and dance around
because we know we can't be found
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus' garden in the shade

We would shout and swim about
The coral that lies beneath the waves
(Lies beneath the ocean waves)
Oh what joy for every girl and boy
Knowing they're happy and they're safe
(Happy and they're safe)

We would be so happy you and me
No one there to tell us what to do
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus' garden with you."

Mulder and Scully followed their children out to the corner where the ice cream truck waited, selling its wares to the local children.

From the porch, they watched as the children of the neighborhood flocked over to the truck. Scully leaned her head on Mulder's shoulder as he slipped his arms around his wife's waist. They both sighed contentedly at the scene, the ability to relax coming easier with each breath. It was a good vacation.

Spoilers: Ummm, hints from first and second season. Nothing major.

Summary: Mulder and Scully's tenth wedding anniversary.

"Who knows how long I've loved you
You know I love you still
Will I wait a lonely lifetime
If you want me to--I will."

Dana's head turned at the sound of the lyrics from the radio. The words had been what she had thought so long ago... it now seemed like forever since she was alone. A lifetime ago, only it wasn't so very lonely.

Now, she had a loving husband and partner, and two wonderful kids.

Her job was still hers and she loved doing it.

"For if I ever saw you
I didn't catch your name
But it never really mattered
I will always feel the same."

Scully remembered when she first realized she truly loved Mulder. It had been in Alaska, a few months after her abduction and return. He'd ditched her that time and gone after a shapeshifting alien. He had come so close to dying, and if she hadn't known about the effects of the retro-virus and informed the doctors after finding him, he most certainly would have died in the hypothermia tank.

"Love you forever and forever
Love you with all my heart
Love you whenever we're together
Love you when we're apart."

Oh, yes. The 'being apart' bit. First when the X-Files had been closed, then after she'd lost 3 months of her life because of some insane former FBI agent... She'd cared for him then, and he for her, but neither knew then what they know now. That the caring ran deeper than just friendship. It was love, everlasting and strong.

"And when at last I find you
Your song will fill the air
Sing it loud so I can hear you
Make it easy to be near you
For the things you do endear you to me
You know I will
I will."

There was a knock on the bedroom door just as the song ended.

"Dana, your mother's here, and Skinner is due soon. We're going to be late if we don't leave now." Mulder's voice was muffled by the door.

"Desmond and Molly called. They're going to be over later with their kids. Molly said they have a new case they're going to work on and your Mom has agreed to watch their kids while they-"

"Happy anniversary, Mulder." She smiled, opening the door.

Fox Mulder was struck speechless for a moment. There stood his wife in an emerald green dress which clung to every curve and yet was elegant enough to wear to the most formal of occasions.

Tonight it was to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary before departing on a flight to London where they were going to see more of the English countryside they hadn't seen on their honeymoon.

She grinned at him. "You were saying?"

"Uh... huh?"

Dana giggled. "Mulder, you amaze me sometimes."

"You look... stunning. Happy anniversary, Dana."

"Shall we go?"

He offered her his arm and they made their way down the stairs.

Though they still worked for the FBI, they'd decided to move permanently into the old 'vacation house' in Maryland several years earlier. The school system was good there, and Margaret Scully lived close by and was more than happy to watch Michelle and David when needed.

"Wow, Mom! Great dress!" Michelle's eyes lit up when her parents walked into the living room.

"Hey, what am I, chopped liver?" Mulder feigned hurt.

"Nah, Dad..." David grinned. "Though I'm not so sure about that tie." Everyone laughed. Mulder's taste in ties hadn't improved one iota.

"Fox, Dana, enjoy yourselves."

Mulder and Scully beamed, both at their family and each other.

"We'll be back in about ten days. Michelle, David, behave yourselves and listen to Grandma Maggie and Uncle Walter, okay?"

"Yes, Mommy!" both children chorused.

WIth one last kiss to both kids and hugs for Maggie Scully, they were off.

Summary: Siblings... can't live with them... can't kill them.

Thirteen year old Michelle Samantha Mulder was in her bedroom. She had been looking for something she needed for the last half hour with little success.

Then, she remembered something her ten year old brother had asked her a few days earlier. Something she had rejected, but now made her furious as she watched him start up the front walk. She hit 'play' on her walkman and left the earphones half on and half off as the Beatles played.

"David, where are my rollerblades?" Michelle asked, running down stairs, not knowing whether or not to kill her brother. David Maxwell Scully, at ten, had just walked back into the house.

"I'm outta here." David said, upon catching sight of her. He ran out the door again. But not before he had dropped something beside the door.

The song that started in her ears she was forced to stifle a snicker at. It was fitting for the situation, but she only gave it a passing thought before the overriding desire to kill her brother took over.

"You say yes, I say no.
You say stop and I say go go go, oh no.
You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello."

"Come back here you jerk! You borrowed my rollerblades without asking me first... not that I would have let you use them anyway... I remember you asked a few days ago and I said no. *Why* did you do it anyway?" Michelle was now gaining on her brother who had started running down the block.

"I-ow! I don't know! Leggo me! Geez, Michelle!" David had started to protest, but Michelle had him by the collar of his tshirt first and then in the perfect position as she started rubbing her knuckles along the top of his head. "Hey! That *hurts*! Let go!"

"I say high, you say low.
You say why and I say I don't know, oh no.
You say goodbye and I say hello
HELLO GOODBYE HELLO GOODBYE hello hello
HELLO GOODBYE I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello
HELLO GOODBYE HELLO GOODBYE hello hello
HELLO GOODBYE I don't know why you say goodbye
HELLO GOODBYE I say goodbye.

Why why why why why why do you say goodbye goodbye, oh no?"

"You buttmunch. You took my rollerblades! *Where* are they?"

Michelle continued to torture her brother but noticed her parents were driving up the driveway.

"They're by the door. Now please stop torturing me!" David shouted.

"Michelle, I thought I told you... torture is against the Geneva Convention." Dana Scully got out of the car, though there was a slightly amused look in her eyes.

"He started it."

"Did not!" David protested loudly, even as Michelle was reaching for one spot on him she *knew* was ticklish.

"Did so, *buttmunch*. You know better than to touch my stuff!"

Michelle answered, hitting him right where she knew it would have the most effect.

"Eeek! Mom! Tell Michelle to let me go! I hate being tickled!"

David protested.

"Did I hear her call him what I think I heard her call him?" Fox Mulder got out of the passenger side of the car, though somewhat slowly.

He was sporting a fresh bruise on his cheek... the aftereffect of a long and draining case... and a fight with Tom Colton.

"You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello."

"I think so, Mulder." Dana smiled at her husband.

"Now David, is that any way to greet your father?" Fox Mulder turned to face his son who looked a little too much like he had when he was that age. And acted it too. Fox Mulder remembered picking on Samantha... and was forced to hide a smile. His kids... well, they were apparently all too typical. He loved them anyway... or perhaps in spite of.

"Dad, he took my rollerblades!" Michelle protested.

"Can I help it if mine don't fit anymore?" David whined. "Yours do, and I wanted to go blading..."

"Did you ask your sister first?" Mulder asked sternly.

"Well... no. But she-"

"David..."

"I'm sorry, Michelle..."

"Buttmunch."

"Freak eyes."

"David... Michelle..." Mulder closed his eyes for a moment, torn between laughing and rolling his eyes.

"You say yes I SAY YES I say no BUT I May MEAN NO.
You say stop I CAN STAY and I say go go go TILL IT's Time TO GO OH,
oh no.
You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say goodbye
Hello hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello hello.
Hela heba helloa CHA CHA, hela..."

"Dana! Fox! I didn't hear you drive up! I was in the back gardening. The roses are coming in nicely this year." Maggie Scully appeared at the front door as the family walked up. She noticed the angry glare Michelle was giving her brother... as well as the bruise on Fox Mulder's face. "My god, what happened?"

"It's a long story, Mom." Dana smiled, though somewhat sheepishly, at her mother.

They walked into the house so as not to create an even greater scene. Michelle and David's parents wondered to themselves whether or not their *family* was an X File... but kept their theories to themselves.

Summary: Someone gets inspired for a Halloween costume.

Okay, I know it's been a while since I wrote one, but I've been under some stress... gimme a break here...

"Mom! Dad! Come quick! I got the perfect idea for a Halloween costume!" Fourteen year old Michelle Katherine Mulder said, running down the stairs of the Maryland home she resided in with her parents and younger brother.

"Oh? What is it, Michelle? And there's no use calling for your father. He's out of town, remember?" Dana Scully (Mulder) answered, walking over to where her daughter was jumping up and down excitedly in the typical fashion of teenagers everywhere. It was Halloween and Michelle had been angsting over what she would wear for the night of fun and partying for over a week.

"Oh, right... you've gotta see this!"

"See what? Michelle?" Dana asked, though her daughter was already running around again.

In reply, Michelle set a CD to play in the CD player, all the while, digging through the box she had also brought down with her.

"Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she's gone."

Michelle pulled out a headband with springs attached, only they'd had cellophane flowers of yellow and green attached, and the springs had green pipecleaners curled around them. Then, she added a pair of old eyeglass frames on with sunrays pasted to the outside. The next thing she pulled out of the box was a long caftan style dress done in blue with white cloud patterns on it and rhinestones decorating it as well.

"Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies,
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers,
That grow so incredibly high.
Newspaper taxis appear on the shore,
Waiting to take you away.
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds,
And you're gone."

Dana smiled as Michelle donned the dress and sparkled, though she was looking very much like the personage in the song come to life.

"I can't seem to manage to get the 'kaleidoscope eyes' bit right, though, Mom... what would you suggest?" Michelle sounded as though the world were coming to an end and Dana bit back a smile, wondering if she ever sounded the way her daughter did.

"You have your father's hazel eyes, which are close enough. I do like the costume. You look great." Dana smiled.

"I don't even know what to do with my hair!" Michelle wailed.

Dana studied her daughter's dark, curling hair which she usually wore back in either a bun or braid.

"What about leaving it down? As I remember 'Yellow Submarine', the drawing had her hair down." Dana smiled. It was how she was wearing it right now.

"Lucy in the sky with diamonds,
Picture yourself on a train in a station,
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties,
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile,
The girl with the kaleidoscope eyes."

"That's a common look for you, isn't it, 'chelle?" came a voice from behind her and she lept a foot, turning around at the same time to see her brother standing there. She stuck her tongue out at her brother for the comment. He gave her the ultra innocent grin which was already breaking hearts, and which no one ever believed.

"And what are you supposed to be?" Michelle asked, giving him the same expression her mother often gave her father for outlandish ideas.

Eleven year old David Maxwell Scully grinned. "Dad, of course."

He was standing there in an old suit, and a tie which looked almost like the artist Jackson Pollock had painted it. He'd only recently cut his brown-red hair in almost the same style he'd seen in old pictures of his father, including an odd addition of a wedding band on his left ring finger.

"David, do you have your father's permission to wear his suit?" Dana asked, picking up the sandwich she'd made for a bite.

"Yeah, Mom. Dad gave it to me when he heard what I was intending to do with it. I got Grandma to hem up the cuffs."

Michelle wrinkled her nose. "Where did you get your tie?"

"Garage sale."

"It looks it."

"SO do most of Dad's."

"So do most of my what, young man?" Fox Mulder walked in behind his children, carrying a suit carrier, and looking like a man who had gone too long without seeing his family.

"Mulder!" Dana was immediately out of the chair and into his arms.

"Hey, Scully... been helping the kids with-" Mulder's low murmur was interrupted by the presence of Dana's lips pressing against his.

David and Michelle both laughed, though David was making a face, almost as though the display of affection by his parents was embarassing him. Michelle beamed. Their parents loved one another deeply, and it showed.

Special Agent Mulder had been away at a profiling job for almost a week with fellow Agent Molly Richardson-Jones. Profiling always took a lot out of him and it showed.

"Mom, Dad, can we go out now?"

"Oh! Sure. Be careful, and be back before 11pm." Dana smiled, breaking the kiss momentarily.

Michelle and David picked up their plastic jack-'o-lantern candy baskets and headed out the door. At the same time, their parents settled on the black leather sofa situated in the living room.

"How was the job?" Dana asked, curling up with her husband.

Mulder groaned. "Awful. Phoebe was there..."

Dana nodded, and held him tightly, listening to his tale.

Summary: Michelle Mulder's leaving for university, neither parent is taking it well, and Mulder's got separation anxiety. *grin*

"It's today, Mulder..." Dana Scully's voice cut through the light doze Fox Mulder had managed to slip into. He sighed, making a soft whining noise. "I hope you're up for everything."

"I still kind of wish she wasn't going." he mumbled.

"You haven't slept all night, have you..."

"No..." His voice was half-muffled by pillow.

"Mulder, you haven't done that since the morning of the wedding when you had to spend the night at your old apartment-"

"My apartment had nothing to do with it. It was not being in bed next to *you* that did it." He turned and took her into his arms.

"I'm still here... Michelle's the one going to college." Dana Scully leaned down to kiss her husband.

"Wednesday morning at five o'clock as the day begins
Silently closing her bedroom door
Leaving the note that she hoped would say more
She goes downstairs to the kitchen clutching her handkerchief
Quietly turning the backdoor key
Stepping outside she is free."

In Michelle Mulder's bedroom, the clockradio started up.

Groaning, she turned over and turned down the volume.

Moments later, there was a soft knock on the door.

"Michelle, honey? Are you awake?" her father's voice drifted through the solid wood of the door.

"She (We gave her most of our lives)
is leaving (Sacrificed most of our lives)
home (We gave her everything money could buy)
She's leaving home after living alone
For so many years. Bye, bye
Father snores as his wife gets into her dressing gown"

The knock at the door came again, slightly louder this time.

"Michelle, honey? Are you okay in there?" Again, her father's voice.

"Yeah, Dad... I'm ok." Michelle dragged herself out of bed to go open the door.

"Picks up the letter that's lying there
Standing alone at the top of the stairs
She breaks down and cries to her husband
Daddy our baby's gone."

Mulder knocked on the door again, hoping to be able to rouse his sleepy daughter.

The bedroom door opened and Michelle stood there, bathrobe pulled around her, looking sleepily at her father. Mulder couldn't help but smile at the image.

"Dad... do you know what time it is?" Michelle yawned.

"Time to get up, hon. Or must I remind you about the fact that it takes four hours to drive up to Massetchsetts?"

"Yeah, so? Aren't you staying at Grandma's place?"

"Hon, we still have to load the car, drive..."

The music drifting out of Michelle's room gave him pause to smile.

"Why would she treat us so thoughtlessly
How could she do this to me.
She (We never though of ourselves)
Is leaving (Never a thought for ourselves)
home (We struggled hard all our lives to get by)
She's leaving home after living alone
For so many years. Bye, bye"

"Hey, Pop, what's with all the noise?" The door to David's room opened and an unruly mop of red hair stuck its way out.

"David, don't call me 'pop'." Mulder turned to face his son. "It's rude."

"You're gonna help me load the car, twerp." Michelle said.

"Says *who*?" David answered.

"Says me!"

"Oh yeah?! You and what army?"

"Friday morning at nine o'clock she is far away
Waiting to keep the appointment she made
Meeting a man from the motor trade.
She What did we do that was wrong
Is having We didn't know it was wrong
Fun is the one thing that money can't buy
Something inside that was always denied
For so many years. Bye, Bye
She's leaving home bye bye"

Dana walked out of the bedroom she shared with Mulder and looked as their children were getting involved in a shouting match. Mulder looked as if he was trying *very* hard not to laugh.

"Mulder, what did you do?"

"Nothing! I knocked on Michelle's door, trying to see if she was going to wake up or not, and woke David up too... Michelle said something about David helping load the car, and... well..." Mulder looked sheepish.

Dana laughed. Mulder did as well. By this time, Michelle and David, who were both about six feet tall, were standing about three inches from the other's face having a glaring contest.

"You know, Mulder, we have the silliest children on this planet."

"I think we were probably worse, though, Scully."

"You're probably right!" she laughed.

"You *know* I'm leaving for college today! Why can't you be nice to me for once?" Michelle upped the stakes.

"Maybe because you're never nice to me?!" David shouted back.

"I asked you yesterday and you said you would!"

"I wish you'd go away and never come back!"

Suddenly, it became very UNfunny.

"Children!" Mulder and Scully spoke at once.

Both turned and looked at their parents.

"I warned you before *never* to say that!" Mulder's voice held more than a note of pain.

"Sure. Fine. Whatever." David grumbled.

"Just for that, young man, you ARE going to help your sister load the car and without a complaint."

"Aw, Dad, do I have to?"

"Yes, you do. I've told you several times already never to say something like that. I said something like that to your Aunt Samantha and have regretted it ever since."

"Really, Dad?"

"Yes, I have. Now, I apologize for waking you up."

"Well, since we're all awake now, let's get started." Dana suggested.

by Christina Shuy

The telephone rang at about 9:30pm. Mulder reached over and picked it up. He rubbed at his eyes at the same time.

"Mulder."

"Dad... It's me... I can't sleep." a stressed-out female voice came through the line.

He put down the file he had been studying. It was an old and very familiar case to him. But, his daughter needed him first and foremost.

"Honey, you're going to have to since you have final exams very early in the morning. YOu're going to need as much sleep as you can get."

"Where's Mom?"

"Right here beside me."

"Is it Michelle?" Dana Scully's voice whispered to her husband's ears. She had had a long day and was sincerely exhausted.

Mulder nodded.

"Daddy, would you sing to me... please?"

"What would you like me to sing?"

"The usual. Dad, *please*?"

Fox William Mulder smiled and cleared his throat. He picked up a tape recorder and put a tape in, pressing record. Keeping a record of it would allow him to send her a copy in case she ever needed it. As Scully and their daughter sat listening, he began to sing a song which had be a favorite of Michelle Samantha Mulder's since she was a baby.

"Michelle, ma belle.
These are words that go together well,
My Michelle.

Michelle, ma belle.
Sont les mots qui vont tres bien ensemble,
Tres bien ensemble."

Dana slipped her arms around Mulder's waist, resting her head on his chest. Mulder smiled and continued the song.

"I love you, I love you, I love you.
That's all I want to say.
Until I find a way
I will say the only words I know that
You'll understand.

I need you, I need you, I need you.
I need to make you see,
Oh, what you mean to me.
Until I do I'm hoping you will
Know what I mean.

I love you."

Pausing momentarily, he kissed the top of Dana's head, feeling her breathing slow and become more even.

"I want you, I want you, I want you.
I think you know by now
I'll get to you somehow.
Until I do I'm telling you so
You'll understand.

I will say the only words I know that
You'll understand, my Michelle."

A rather loud yawn was heard on the other end of the phone line and as Mulder checked Scully, he saw that his lovely wife had fallen asleep.

Scully's face was peaceful and smiling in sleep.

"Thanks, Daddy..." came the sleepy mumble from the other end of the phone. "I think I am going to get some sleep now."

"Good luck in the morning, sweetie." Mulder smiled at his daughter over the phone. "Your mother and I love you."

"Love you too, Dad..."

Summary: Scully's last letter to Mulder. Response to Emu's challenge.

This takes place a long time from now.

Mulder found himself in front of the Washington Memorial, by the Reflecting Pool. So appropriate, since he and Scully frequented there so often. He reached into his coat pocket and took out an envelope.

Earlier...

"Dad, Mom asked me to give this to you if anything ever happened to her." David Maxwell Scully handed his father an envelope with "F. William Mulder" written on it in Scully's always-even handwriting.

"She asked *you* to be her probate attorney?" Fox William Mulder strained to speak. He'd been practically silent since his wife had died, one month prior, and now his voice rasped. Unshed tears evident.

"Well... me and Clare both, actually. Mom wanted me to handle the personal stuff and Clare to handle the legal stuff."

"You're lucky to have a partner like her."

"You were lucky to have a partner like Mom to start with. If it weren't for you and Mom, I'm not sure the firm of Scully, Skinner, and Levenson would have gotten off the ground to start with. After all, you were the one to introduce me to Walter Skinner's very beautiful daughter.

Never mind the fact that I'm technically related to her." David's grin lit up his face, just as his mother's used to light hers.

The elder Mulder raised an eyebrow at his son. He was certainly behaving like a man in love, and who could blame him. Aside from the height, dark hair and hazel eyes, he took after his mother. Fox Mulder was more than certain that his son had broken many a heart in his time, and was still breaking many a female heart.

They had named him David because of Scully's wish to have a 'junior'

in the family, and she had renamed Mulder "David" many many years ago...

at a dance before they had met and become working partners and essentially joined their lives at that time. His older sister, Michelle Samantha, was also fiercely protective of him. Much as he himself had been of his own younger sibling. And they had found Samantha...

That was after Scully revealed she had cancer... long after... and after she'd gone into remission, married and had children. But then the cancer came back. Metastatic this time. There was no stopping it. Though she had tried various treatments, nothing worked and she had died in Mulder's arms.

"I'm... gonna go, David. I need to be alone for a little while." His voice trailed off, trying to avoid tears.

David Scully smiled after his father. "Sure, Dad. You know where to find me if you need me." He knew his father was having a hard time dealing after his mother had died. The cancer had been rough on the entire family, though most especially on Fox Mulder himself. In the back of his mind, he still held himself responsible.

Sighing, Mulder pulled open the envelope and began to read.

Scully's clear handwriting sending pain to his heart. She had been brave until the end, and it was part of the reason he loved her dearly.

Dear Mulder,

As you are reading this, I would have to be dead. I had this letter in my will when I was making it out on the grounds that it be given to you once I passed on from this life. I felt it would be appropriate if David handled things, as well as Clare. After all, Clare is going to be part of the family soon. Walter and my mother will be so proud. In a strange way, she has been part of the family since Skinner and my mother got married after the death of Skinner's first wife, Sharon.

I knew when I came out of remission that it would be hardest on you. Even more so than on me. After all, you would be the one left behind after I died.

I want you to know that I've never regretted a moment... marrying you, having Michelle and David, or the choices I made to fight the cancer in what we both knew would be an ultimately losing battle. I am just glad we had at least 25 years together before then, even though we didn't realize what we had for the first four or so.

During my most difficult times in the past, I would always keep one song in mind and, after I met you, you would be in my heart. I would like to share that song with you.

Let It Be
(Lennon/McCartney)

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be. Yeah
There will be an answer, let it be.

And when the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me,
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be,
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

You have been a wonderful father to Michelle and David. They are both very proud to have had us as parents. I am only sorry that we didn't have more children, but we both know who we can blame for that.

Fox, always know that I love you and we will be together again soon. In the mean time, I will wait for you. I have never regretted one moment of our lives together. Well, maybe that fluke man, but... *smile* Love, Always and Forever,

Dana.

"Oh, Dana... I can't be without you anymore. This last month has been so hard... Now I know how you felt when I ditched you." he whispered.

'Mulder... if you're ready...' A faint voice floated in his mind.

"Scully?"

'Mulder, come... It's time.' He looked up to see a ghostly image floating towards him, accompanied by a younger, blond man.

"It's time." the young man told him. "Dana is here for you now."

Holding the letter to his heart, he closed his eyes.

"Dad? Dad?" Michelle Mulder's voice rose in alarm. "David! I found him!" She put her hand to his neck pulse-points. No pulse.

"Michelle, what?" David came running over. "What's wrong with Dad?"

"He's dead, David..."

"Dad? Dad?" Michelle Mulder's voice rose in alarm. "David! I found him!" She put her hand to his neck pulse points. No pulse.

"Michelle, what?" David asked running over. "What's wrong with Dad?"

"He's dead, David..."

"What? Are you sure?"

She checked for a pulse again, then moved her hand down to her father's chest. "There's no pulse, no heartbeat either. But look at his face!"

"No surprise. That's Mom's letter."

Fox William Mulder had died with a smile on his face.

Baltimore, Maryland

The funeral for Fox William Mulder was a somber occasion. As somber as the one for Dana Katherine Scully(Mulder) had been just a month prior. However, there was less of an air of sadness with this one as many of the attendees knew that Mulder and Scully were together again in death as they were in life.

Michelle looked for "Get Back (Lennon/McCartney)" in her music database to be played at the funeral. It was a song her father always liked. Of course, she remembered being sung to by her father.

"Michelle" was almost always the lullaby of choice... for obvious reasons.

As the music started, people began to arrive and walk into the hall where the funeral was being held. The Mulder family and the Scully family streaming in together. David arrived with Clare Skinner. Both of them looked somber, professional, and sad. Walter Skinner and Margaret Scully arrived together. Michelle smiled at them as they went to sit down behind his daughter and her grandson.

The music began.

"[Sweet Loretta Fat thought she was a cleaner but she was a frying pan.]

Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner
But he knew it wouldn't last.
Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona
For some California grass.
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
Get back Jojo. Go home
Get back, get back.
Back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Back to where you once belonged.
Get back Jo.

Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman
But she was another man
All the girls around her say she's got it coming
But she gets it while she can
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
Get back Loretta. Go home
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
Get back Loretta
Your mother's waiting for you
Wearing her high-heel shoes
And her low-neck sweater
Get on home Loretta
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.

[Thanks, Mo! ...on behalf of the group I hope we passed the audition.]"

"You more than passed the audition, Daddy... I hope this is the sort of thing you wanted." Michelle mumbled to herself as the last of the invited mourners wandered in. Looking up at the front of the hall, where a woman was looking back, Michelle nodded. "And may you get back to where you once belonged. With a family."

As soon as everyone was seated, a tall woman with dark, curling hair walked up to the podium on one side of the casket which was surrounded by sprays of flowers.

"I would like to thank you for coming. My name is Samantha Mulder."

There was a stunned silence from some in the crowd, but those had been co-workers and acquaintances who didn't know better. Of course, most of them had been won't to ridicule Mulder in life for looking for her.

"My brother always did know what he was doing. He was a loving father to his children Michelle and David, a devoted husband to Dana Katherine Scully, and a wonderful brother, even though I did not know him for a very long time. I am appreciative of the time I did get to spend with him and his family. He and the family he gathered around him treated everyone with the utmost respect. I-" It was then that her voice broke. Michelle rushed up to her aunt.

"Thank you, Samantha... er, Aunt Samantha. My father believed in the truth, my mother believed in it as well. Truth be told, they both lived and died for the truth... even to the sacrifice, no matter how unintended, of their families. We will love and cherish them both for the rest of our lives. For without them, we could not be." Michelle stopped, tears threatening.

'At least I still have a copy of Dad singing.' she thought with an inward smile.

"We thank you all for coming," David finished for his sister.

"Our father will be laid to rest next to our mother, as per their instructions."

With that, everyone stood and proceeded out to the graveyard where Fox William Mulder was lain to rest next to his beloved wife.

Summary: A monument laid in memory...

Note: this is meant as the epilogue to "The Beatles Files"

One month later...

Samantha Mulder, and her niece and nephew, presided over the setting of the joint monument. It was a small, quiet gathering, with only immediate family and friends. They approached the site where her brother and sister-in-law were buried and the workers who had just finished setting the marker in place nodded to them before leaving the family of the deceased in peace.

Dana Katherine Scully
Beloved wife, mother
and daughter

"The Truth shall set you free."

Fox William Mulder
Devoted son, father
and husband

"The Truth is out there."

As Samantha read over the individual grave markers, she felt the mist of tears in her eyes. Thinking about having lost both of them in so short a time was still quite an emotional experience.

Though they had only found Samantha shortly before Mrs. Mulder had passed away peacefully, though quite a while since the menace that had been Cancerman had gone, the family bond that had been between Mulder siblings was still very much there. At times, it had felt like they had not been separated at all.

"Aunt Samantha, it's time..." Michelle noted quietly.

"We would like to thank you for coming..." Samantha Mulder began in a quiet voice.

The marker was simple. It lay centered at the top of both gravestones and was a simple marble affair with their immediate family tree inscribed, as well as a song.

"Oh yeah, all right
Are you going to be in my dreams
Tonight?
. . .

And in the end
The love you take
Is equal to the love you make."

Above them, in the tranquility that was the afterlife, Dana Katherine Scully and Fox William Mulder watched as their immediate family paid respects as they themselves waited their next turns on the planet below in each other's arms and each other's lives and hearts. They had also seen a glimpse of the future and were both delighted and eager to watch what would happen.
