Summary: Is Scully ready to believe?

~*Pleeze Enjoy **

It was only a one inch thick pane of glass that separated them now. Only yesterday, were there countless reasons he may have never gotten to see this child. Anything from Scully's barren womb to alien conspiracies and a man named Kryceck. But, now it was here... only feet from him... only separated from him by this single pane of glass.

It was surrounded by about twenty other babies, but he knew which one was hers. There was something about her baby... something he recognized.

"Hi." A familiar voice echoed throughout the hallway.

"Wow, your up and about." He was a little surprised as Scully joined him by the window..

"That was the hardest thing I have ever done, Mulder," she said, her voice hoarse and tired.

"I bet. But, was it worth it?" he asked, already knowing her answer.

"Every bit of it. She's beautiful, isn't she?" Tears began to form in her eyes. He reached out and put his arm around her, pulling her in close.

"Like her mother," he responded.

"Thank you, Mulder." She pulled away and looked up at him. It amazed her how, sometimes, he could be the most thoughtful man on the planet. She smiled.

"Is there something familiar about her, Scully?" he asked, keeping his eyes on the child.

"Well... she has been growing in me for the past nine months. The moment I saw her, I felt as if I've known her forever," she responded.

"Like she was already a giant part of your life," he added thoughtfully.

"You feel the same way?" she asked after an awkward silence.

"Yeah, well, I don't know. I feel... I feel like a knew her in a past life or something, you know?" He turned towards her then back to the child, "Oh, I don't know. Don't listen to me. It's probably just the excitement of the whole thing, Scully. You're a mom!" He glanced down at her again, grinning.

"No... you know, maybe you're right," she said quietly.

"I'm right? Damn, what kinnda drugs did they give you, Scully?" He kidded.

"Don't you remember? About four years ago we worked on a case that involved a cult and a woman named Melissa who claimed to have known you in a past life." She tried to jog his memory.

"That rings a bell." He understated. He actually thought about that case all the time, "Wait. Are you saying this is that Melissa person?" He said in disbelief.

"No, I guess what I'm saying is that it's possible you may have known this baby in a past life... Mulder, I've made it a goal to become more open to things that, I don't know, two years ago, I wasn't. I believe you were abducted by aliens... as corny as that sounds coming from me, I believe it. I know that they are out there. I've seen them, the hybrids, the bounty hunters, the grays, all of them. One of them was after this baby, even. How can I deny that they exist if I know they do, if I've seen them, touched them?" she asked rhetorically.

"Maybe you're at that point where you can't anymore... Where you've seen and heard enough to know that the things you see are really there, are really true." He suggested.

"I think you're right, Mulder. I don't know if that matters now or not, though," she said.

"Why?" He turned to face her.

"Well, I don't know if I'm going back," she told him. In her voice there was a slight questioning tone, one that beckoned for a blessing from him. She wouldn't go back... unless he wanted her to.

"Wow... that's kind of a shock. But, I can understand. I felt the same way when I came back... like I didn't fit in. The X-files has Agent Doggett, now. I think he's getting the hang of things." He assured her, "We might have to come out and save his ass sometimes, but for the most part he'll do fine."

"I know he will." She smiled at the thought of Doggett sitting down in his office, alone, trying to figure out how to stop killer cockroaches or liver eating monsters.

"So, I bet you could use some coffee." He looked down to her exhausted face.

"Oh, God, yes!" She rolled her neck around a few times and rubbed her eyes.

"Me, too," he said.

"Um, we can meet my mother and Agent Reyes down in the cafeteria. They went down a few minutes ago." She turned towards the elevator. He followed behind her. But, he glanced over his shoulder before getting on... to look at her one more time, at her beautiful child, at the miracle.

"Oh, yeah, Scully. I forgot to tell you something." He remembered as the doors slid closed.

"What's that?" she asked.

"Happy Mother's Day!" He smiled. She pursed her lips and those warm, salty tears appeared on her face again.

"Thanks, Mulder." She reached out and took his hand. And, with her free hand, she wiped the teardrops from her face.

And that's how they stayed for the rest of the evening... hand in hand, prepared to battle whatever was to come... prepared to do it together.

Author's Notes:

This is kind of a story representing the end of an era (and of season 8). Also, I had to write a story for mother's day and my idea was, originally, to have it be a Scully/Mrs. Scully fic, but then I remembered- Oh, yeah, Scully's pregnant! Just Kidding- I am constantly thinking about new ideas for Scully/ Pregnancy fics. I had just seen The Field Where I Died about a week before I started writing this. It became an instant favorite and I wanted to incorporate it into a fic. I hope you all liked it. I'm gonna miss being able to write about this stuff. Drop me a line if you get a chance. Thanx for reading- Happy Mother's Day!
