Summary: Mulder and Scully encounter an old friend. Err...landlord.

Note: This is a sequel to a story I wrote a few years ago called "Borrowed Hearts" so if you haven't read "Borrowed Hearts", you might not understand it:) A couple people have asked me to write a sequel to that, so I decided to go for it. Here you go, guys! Hope you like it!

"Hey Scully, you'll never guess who I ran into the other day," Fox Mulder said, as he handed his very pregnant partner a tall glass of water. With two ice cubes, of course. Just the way she liked it.

"Who?" Dana Scully replied, taking a sip of her water and smiling contendedly.

Mulder grinned and slowly sat down on the couch next to her.

"Leonard Hopkins. Remember him? My building superintendent about three years ago?"

"Ah, the crazy one."

"He wasn't crazy, Scully. Just eccentric."

"Mulder, he was crazy with a capital C. Whatever happened to him, anyway? We never got to repeat our married couple act for him."

Mulder couldn't help but grin at his partner's mock disappointment.

"Well, there was the whole 'Falls at Arcadia' thing."

"Yeah, but that was work. We had to follow protocol. Plus, you left the seat up so many times I wanted to divorce the first day."

Mulder's mind drifted back to that assignment two years ago and chuckled. "That was great."

"So, did Leonard get fired or what?"

"Yeah, he was canned pretty quickly. People complained. Let's just say there were a lot of single people living in my apartment complex at the time."

"Well there's a big surprise, Mulder. Anyone who thinks he can pull off a stunt like that deserves to get fired."

"He had a vision, Scully."

"So did Hitler."

"You can't compare Leonard to Hitler, Scully."

"Why not? They both wanted to mold society into what they deemed appropriate."

"That's going too far. All Leonard wanted to do was make the apartment more family-oriented. Is that such a crime?"

"No, evicting people because they don't fit that description is."

"But I didn't have to worry about that, did I? I had you to cover me, like always."

Scully smiled, taking another sip of her water.

"You're welcome. And as much as I hate to admit it, that was pretty fun."

Mulder grinned mischievously and jumped up, throwing his coat on.

"What's great?" Scully queried, eyeing her partner suspiciously as he hastily made his way to her door.

"Oh, uh--well Leonard invited us out for a drink tomorrow night. His treat. Pick you up at seven? Great! See you then."

He barely had time to grasp the door handle.

"Oh no you don't!"

At a surprisingly quick speed, Scully managed to pull herself to her feet in time to stop her partner from fleeing the scene.

"Nice try. Get back here."

Knowing he was caught, a sheepish-looking Mulder slowly stomped back into his partner's apartment.

"Scully, one night. That's all I ask."

"Mulder, the guy is a nutcase. And he thinks we're married. *And* in case you haven't noticed, I can't drink and I'm not exactly enthralled with the idea of getting dressed up and going out lately."

Mulder smiled, scanning his partner's pregnant form. He couldn't help but think of how beautiful she looked like this. He almost wanted her to stay like this forever.

"Mulder, do I really have to do this?" Almost.

"No, Scully, you don't have to do this."

"Well, what if I want to?" she countered, a tiny smile playing on her lips.

Mulder shook his head in amazement."Are you up to it?"

"Only if you are."

"Think we can pull it off, for the third consecutive time?"

"We're pros, Mulder."

"See you tomorrow then, at seven?"

"Seven sharp."

"Good night Scully."

"'Night Mulder."

Dana Scully nervously tapped her fingernails on her coffee table. Her eyes scanned the clock for the thousandth time.

Of course she wasn't nervous.

It was only an evening with a crackpot.

And this Leonard Hopkins character.

She chuckled quietly to herself, amused at her version of a joke. "What have I gotten myself into?" she asked aloud.

She didn't have time to answer.

As if on cue, her doorbell rang. She slowly got up and sauntered to the door.

There he was, standing there like he had so many times before. And each time he stood at her threshold, he made her smile a different way than before.

Scully smiled broadly.

"Mulder, come in. I'm all ready. Can you believe it?"

"Sure can. We both know how hyped up you are for this evening, Scully."

The two partners exchanged amused glances.

"Ready to go?"

"Ready as I'll ever be."

Scully grinned once again as she shut the door behind them.

"Well I'll be dipped," chirped fifty-something Leonard Hopkins, putting down his glass of whiskey and rising unsteadily from his seat to greet his guests.

Mulder grinned proudly.

"Leonard, you remember my wife, Dana?"

"Remember? A man doesn't forget someone so darn pretty. And...what in the name of the Good Lord do we have here? A bun in the oven! Well, what do ya know!"

Scully smiled faintly, suddenly realizing people were beginning to stare.

"I was sure Fox would have enlightened you," she replied through gritted teeth, nudging her partner in the ribs.

Mulder returned the gesture, albeit in the form of a soft pat on the small of her back, where his hand was situated.

He pulled out the chair and Scully slowly sat down before he took his seat.

Scully couldn't help but stare at the old man. He still had the same, long grey hair and tiny glasses. He looked slightly older, but he was just the same as she remembered.

But she was smiling.

"It is so great to see you two again," Leonard gushed. "What has it been now, two, three years?"

"About that," Mulder replied, eyeing his partner.

"Mr. Hopkins, what is it you do now?" Scully asked, noticing a rather expensive looking watch dangling from his arm.

"Oh me? Well, mostly I travel. This was a gift," he grinned, pointing to the watch.

"Oh," Scully replied, her cheeks turning a light shade of pink.

"Actually," Leonard started, leaning in closer, "it's a little embarrassing to talk about what I really do now."

"You can tell us," Mulder chimed in, leaning forward eagerly.

Leonard proceeded to glance around the restaurant, taking a couple sips of his drink as he did so. "Promise not to laugh?"

Mulder and Scully nodded in unison.

"I chase flying saucers!"

Scully nearly choked on her water.

"You do what?" she asked incredulously.

"You heard the man, Dana. He chases flying saucers. Does that really sound so crazy?"

All Scully could do was shake her head in amazement.

Leonard sat back in his chair, satisfied.

"UFO's always fascinated me. Never knew why. It's remarkable, really. You two should really look into it. It's a real thrill."

"I bet it is," Mulder replied, grinning from ear to ear. Underneath the table, his loafers came in contact with his partner's ankle.

She barely had time to shoot him a wide-eyed glance before Leonard sat up again.

"Enough about me. Let's talk about you two. How did *this* happen?"

He gestured to Scully's rounded stomach, winking.

Scully rolled her eyes, but couldn't stop the playful smile forming on her lips. "I think Fox can field that one."

Mulder shut his eyes for a brief moment, a defeated look crossing his face. He sighed dramatically, narrowing his eyes slyly at his partner.

"You don't want to tell Leonard about our little miracle, Dana?" he countered, grinning slyly.

"Miracle?" Leonard piped up. "How so?"

Suddenly there was silence. Mulder looked at Scully and Scully looked at Mulder, each waiting for the other to speak.

"It was a long road, but we finally got there," Scully finally said, her eyes dropping to her lap.

"Enough said," Leonard replied, patting Scully's hand gently. "Congratulations. Both of you."

Scully smiled slightly and nodded, her eyes still fixated on her lap.

"Thank you," Mulder said gruffly. He looked at his partner for a reaction. Anything. Hopefully eye contact.

As if on cue, she glanced up and fixed her piercing blue eyes upon him.

In them, he could see everything. He could see her joy. Her happiness.

He could see his Scully.

She slowly reached her hand out to him, and he instantly grasped it in his.

With a renewed spirit, Scully then turned to the animated man opposite them, already in the process of ordering another round of drinks for himself and Mulder.

"So Leonard, tell me about these flying saucers. I want to know all about them."
