Chapter 1: The Witching Hour, XFiles Edition

Disclaimer, Act One: Mulder and Scully do not belong to me. They are Chris Carter's. Leave me alone.

Disclaimer, Act Two: The first line is a quote from Anne Rice's The Witching Hour. I have stolen it shamelessly.

Further A/N: This is part of a three part drabble, all of which are entitled The Witching Hour. You can find the others in the House, M.D. fandom and the Law & Order: SVU fandom.

He was looking at her. Maybe he knew how confused she was, how strange the whole afternoon seemed, all this talk of curses and things, and dead people and that weird necklace.

Scully sighed. "Mulder," she said, "I'm fine."

He continued to look at her. "I don't believe you."

She sighed again and fiddled with her keys. "That's not really my problem."

"Yes, it is," Mulder replied, starting to smile that smile, the one that means he's not going to let it go. "I don't want you to be alone tonight if you're scared or uncomfortable."

Scully looked up, tried to meet his eyes and found she couldn't. "I'm not scared," she said defensively. "It's just been a long day, and I want to go to sleep."

"You know, I honestly can't tell why this case bothers you so much," he said, leaning against the door, making it impossible for her to go into her apartment. "I just can't figure it out. Unless," he paused for effect, "you do believe in curses."

She tried to laugh and almost pulled it off. "Mulder, I don't believe in curses."

"I've put a spell on you, and now you're mine," he sang softly.

This time she did laugh, even though she knew it would only encourage him. Maybe she had been a little freaked out by the whole thing, but that was neither here nor there. There were no such things as curses, no such things as witches. She gently pushed him aside and unlocked her apartment. "Goodnight, Mulder," Scully said, closing the door softly behind her. She smiled slightly to herself; there really wasn't anything like Mulder flirting with her to take the edge off the day.
