Title: Music of the Night
Summary: It's Scully's birthday, and Mulder's her date to the FBI costume ball. Together they compose their own music..hint hint..
Turn your face away
It was Scully's birthday. Ugh, she hated them. Having to be all smiles for 24 hours was not exactly her idea of fun. The only bright side was that later that evening, Mulder was taking her for a night on the town. Well, actually, he had asked her to be his date for the FBI costume ball.
It had been an unexpected surprise. Of course, Scully had always had feelings for him, but she didn't think he felt the same way. Well, he probably didn't, she thought. Just being a gentleman on my birthday. Fine with me.
It was 3 when Scully left work. Skinner had cordially given her the day off, but of course she came, if not only to see her beloved partner. Now it was 4 and she still hadn't found a suitable costume for tonight's special occasion. She had slipped into gowns and sheets, but still hadn't found a thing that was just..."her".
Finally, Scully came upon another costume shop, large and opulent. She decided to step in. What the hell? She was greeted by a tall, thin woman, with flowing black hair. She wore nothing but a black satin dress and black heels. There was obviously nothing underneath. Scully gulped. Maybe this wasn't the place for her...
"Good afternoon, my name is Kat, may I help you?" Kat smiled an almost wicked smile, and ushered Scully towards racks of costumes.
"Uh, yes," Scully replied, forcing a smile in return. "I'm looking for a costume for an...office ball tonight." She looked at the costumes on the racks. They were a *bit* risky.
"Special occasion? Well, Ms...I didn't catch your name." Kat stared at the petite redhead, reading her mind. That PhD in Psychology didn't hurt either.
"I'm Dana Scully," Scully said, deciding not to use her Bureau title. "And, yes, it's a special occasion."
Kat nodded and began shuffling through the costumes. After 5 minutes, she found one that seemed to suit this stuffy woman. It was just what she needed....
"A cat costume? You've got to be kidding me!" Scully gasped. The costume consisted of a sleeveless black body suit, that was really really low cut. Skinner would not approve of this.
"At least try it on. You don't have to buy it! But hear, take these with you". Kat shoved a pair of fishnet stockings and black boots into Scully's arms. "The dressing room's in the back left corner."
Inside the dressing room, Scully hated what she saw in the mirror. It just wasn't her...
Kat knocked on the dressing room door. "Ms. Scully, I've found another costume that I think you'll like much more." She threw over a long gown, made of sapphire velvet, and it was made for a queen. Scully knew that indeed, this was the costume for her.
Mulder stood in front of his closet, knowing exactly what to wear. He had a Phantom costume from years ago, when...well, he couldn't remember just when. All he had to do was pick up a red rose.
He threw on his coat, and left his apartment. He was alone in the elevator. Fox Mulder hated to be alone. At least tonight he wouldn't be. He'd be with Scully, *his* Scully. The one he loved so much. Mulder sighed. He never had been good with expressing emotions.
He noticed his reflection on the closed doors. He had worry lines on his forehead, but still he was a handsome man. Yeah, Mulder thought, so handsome that Scully doesn't even notice me. He sighed and walked out the building to his car.
