Summary: Mulder and Scully investigate odd happenings in a small town. A town that only has one vacent motel room...
"Zombies?" she asked, hoping she heard him wrong.
"Zombies." He repeated, looking down at his big plate of eggs and bacon.
The place was called Mac's Diner and it was almost as exciting as it sounded. It was the only eating establishment open after 8PM in this tiny bible-belt town and so there they sat, going over the latest case in their illustrious roster of mysteries.
"Zombies from outer space?" she asked slowly, only poking at her club sandwich with a toothpick.
Some things got one raised eyebrow. This one was a two eyebrow situation. Scully's wide eyed 'you-can't-be-serious' look melted into a 'please-don't-be-serious' frown.
"That is what you are going to write in your report?" she asked with a frown.
"Extraterrestrial parasites that inhabited human corpses and bring them back to life in a mindless cannibalistic form." He spouted as if it was as normal as ordering scrambled eggs in a diner.
"Space zombies." She gave up and picked up the oversized sandwich and trying to get her mouth wide enough to take a bite.
"You saw them too." He reminded her, waving a piece of bacon her way.
"No, I saw people who were buried alive because they were put in a deathlike trance due to the effects of a rare but quite Earthly parasite. The same people clawed their way out of their graves. It happens all the time in South America, Mulder, and the people there often make it out to be some kind of Voodoo Zombie myth, but in reality it is just a very unfortunate biological effect."
He gave her the old 'come-on-don't-give-me-that-science-mumbo-jumbo-look' as he picked up the catsup.
"So why do they eat people's brains?" Mulder asked, suddenly reconsidering pouring catsup on his eggs.
"I don't know yet. I am going to examine the corpse we found yesterday, maybe it is some kind of chemical deficiency the parasite is causing, which would make their now psychotic minds crave something that the human brain possesses." She explained, giving up on the sandwich and just eating the pickle.
"Or maybe someone has been watching Dawn of The Dead a few too many times." He quipped, finish the last of his toast and bacon but leaving his eggs untouched.
"Well, Mulder, if it is brains they are looking for, you should be safe," she said getting up and giving him a smile.
"Anyhow, we aren't going to get anything done until the morgue opens in the morning, so we'd better find a motel."
As if on queue, thunder clapped outside.
