J.Edgar Hoover Building

Special Agent Dana Scully sat on her partner's desk, absent-mindedly swinging her legs back and forth. She hadn't really believed it would happen. She had pretended that everything would just continue on as it had for the last 7 years. She glanced up at her partner who was staring at a spot on the wall. Now she had to face reality. The X-Files had just been shut down, permanently.

"This sucks, Mulder." She kicked a bit harder at the chair she normally sat in.

"Yep." Mulder responded vaguely. For a while, nothing but the tick of the clock could be heard in the office. Then Mulder shifted in his chair and hazarded a glance at this partner.

"Marry me, Scully?" He stated more than asked. His eyes were again focused on a spot on the wall.

Scully's kicking stopped momentarily, then resumed. God, he was serious. She grinned.

"Tomorrow soon enough, Mulder?" she asked casually.

Mulder smiled. "Actually, Scully," he said as he pulled an envelope from his jacket pocket, "there's this great Elvis Revue in Vegas tonight." He waved the packet at her as he leaned into her personal space. His dark hazel eyes met her deep blue eyes. A long and silent conversation took place within the span of seconds.

"Vegas, Mulder?" she queried dryly. It figured, she thought.

"Vegas, Scully" he confirmed gleefully. "You, me, and Elvis!" He laughed at her groan.

"Mulder, you're nuts!" Scully tried to keep the smile from her face, but didn't quite succeed.

"And it took you seven years to figure that out, Agent Scully?" he teased.

"Well, I suspected it early on," she paused as she leaned in close to press her lips to his, "but, you know me, I had to have proof." She pulled back and gave him her killer smile.

Mulder stared at her. Sometimes that smile made him forget his own name. He shook his head to clear it, and then looked at his watch. Time to go.

"Come on, G-Woman," he touched her knee lightly, grinning as she shivered, "let's make it official."

Scully looked at him questioningly with her eyes.

"Mrs.Spooky," he stressed the Mrs. slightly. For once in his life, he was completely happy.

Scully sighed loudly at the lame joke, but let him pull her to her feet. "My mom's going to kill us."

"Uh, no, she won't, Scully." Mulder looked sheepish. "She's meeting us at the airport in about an hour."

She threw one of those 'looks' at him. He just grinned at her unrepentantly. Mulder ran a finger over her open mouth.

"Surprise, Scully."

Scully shook her head in exasperation. "Awfully sure of yourself, Agent Mulder," she stated dryly.

Mulder looked at her for a moment and then brushed a strand of copper hair from her face. "Scully, our partnership has been the best thing that I've ever had in my life." "You know I love you, that I've always loved you, and I know you love me." "I just can't imagine not having you with me forever." He paused, searching for the words he wanted. "I should have asked this years ago, but..." he trailed off.

"You were afraid to change what we had?," Scully asked quietly. She waited for him to meet her eyes. "Me too, Mulder," she confessed.

"Doh," Mulder replied sardonically. Scully laughed outright. He looked into her blue eyes, thoughtful. "It really is about fate, Scully." He stopped for a moment, then continued.

"You and me---it's so..."

Scully interrupted, "right?"

He nodded. "Forever," he added with an inclination of his head.

"And always," she finished, smiling slightly. She placed a small hand on his arm and felt his muscles tense as he rotated his wrist to clasp her hand. She linked her fingers with his as he bent his head to kiss her.

Several minutes passed before he released her.

Mulder then moved to the other side of his desk, throwing his partner a devilish look.

"Hey, Scully, did you know that Area 51 is just a short drive from Vegas?"

Mulder shut down his computer and unplugged the projector. He walked over to the file cabinet and removed two files and closed it with a clang.

He stood in the middle of the room for a moment, then joined his partner by the door.

Scully had rolled her eyes at his not-so-rhetorical question and then went to gather their trench coats.

"Did you know that most people honeymoon in Jamaica, Mulder?" she responded lightly.

He leaned in close to her ear and whispered, "since when are we 'most people', Scully?"

"You got me there, G-Man," she retorted. She slipped her hand in his as he turned out the lights.

"We'll figure out a way around our new assignments, Scully." He looked at her seriously. "The truth is still out there, you know." She smiled up at him and nodded solemnly.

"We'll find it, Mulder, I promise." Scully tugged on his hand and he closed the door behind them as they left the basement.

Note: I've come across other fanfic recently where M & S go off to Vegas---all I can say is that great minds think alike, as I've had this idea for years. Where else on this planet would Mulder and Scully get married?
