Summary: See part one of this series: Enter Mulder

Author Notes: I realize that if you have read my first story, Enter Mulder, in all its parts, you're quite used to my ranting and ravings. I wrote the sequel, Resist or Die, knowing you would probably do the latter when you reached the end and would be left hanging. Wait a minute, I think that was me that would die without this sequel. I hope you enjoy it as much as the first. The Third part is Shattered Halcyon.

Part One: Tortured Souls

John Doggett got up off of the front porch. He had to tell Mulder and Scully about what had happened. He only hoped that he wouldn't be blamed, even though he already blamed himself.

When he arrived to Mulder and Scully's door, he let himself in with a key they had given him, just as he had given them a key to his own house. He shouted into the house, "Mulduh, Scully, it's me!"

Mulder came down the stairs first. Scully was very slow in the last few days of pregnancy, her due date almost upon her. Mulder stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the look on Doggett's face. He asked, "What's wrong, where's Sam?"

"Gone. They took her." He had gone into shock.

"They took her? No, not again!" Mulder said, getting angry. He knocked a lamp down to the floor in frustration.

Scully finally made it down the stairs. "John? What's the matter?"

"Sam, They took her. She's gone," Doggett said, unemotional. Scully took his hand, leading him to the couch.

"Tell me about it," she said in soothing tones.

"We were asleep, and she woke up, telling me They were here to take her again. I, I told her to go back to sleep, when he arrived. The Alien Bounty Hunter is the one who took her," Doggett said, his mind replaying the events that had happened.

"Anything else, did she get a chance to tell you anything?" Scully asked, taking his hand.

"Yeah, she told me that Mulduh has to head up the Resistance while she's gone. I'm sorry, it's all my fault. She shouldn't be in Their hands."

Mulder sat down, behind Scully. "No, it's not your fault."

"I told her I would protect her, and I failed. I failed her just like I failed my boy." He finally broke down, since arriving.

Scully turned around to look at Mulder for a moment.

"Oh Mulder, I think They might have just crushed his spirit. Will you go and call Skinner? He should know, so he can get John some leave." Mulder nodded. Scully turned back to Doggett. "Listen to me, John. She's going to come back. She told you she would, didn't she?"

"Yes she did," Doggett said, through choked sobs.

"Then she will come back. She's strong, and just knowing you are here waiting for her means a lot to her." Scully hugged him, rocking back and forth, trying to soothe him.

She felt his arms go around her, and she comforted him. "Sh, sh, it's hard right now. I know. It's going to be alright."

Mulder came back, "He's on his way. Those Alien Bastards!"

"Sh, Mulder. Let him cry it out, don't upset him by getting angry. I know you're just as upset."

Mulder sat down on the other side of Scully. He said softly, "I guess we have another thing in common, we've both witnessed an abduction of Samantha Mulder.

God, if I could have stopped it the first time..."

A knock on the door disturbed the house. Mulder walked over, answering, and let Skinner in. "Oh God, Mulder, he's going to need some leave. You're absolutely right. How long has she been gone?"

"An hour maybe," Mulder whispered. "Want me to call the boys, tell them what has happened?"

"You'd better. It's going to be difficult in the next few weeks."

"I know," Mulder said. He already sounded tired, and he certainly felt it.

Mulder called the Gunmen. "Guys, I'm so sorry to wake you up. Could you get to my place right away. It's very very important."

Langly didn't even think to argue. He said, "We'll be right there." Mulder hung up.

"Skinner, he's going to have a rough time for awhile.

What you gonna tell Kersh?"

"I'm going to have to lie, I don't know yet," Skinner said, looking for a moment as Scully tried to comfort the inconsolable Doggett. "Good God, he just might die from this, if he gets reckless, he just might do something he'll regret."

"I was thinking the same thing. We'll have to do all we can to make sure it doesn't come down to that," Mulder said.

"How you holding up?" Skinner asked.

"Been better. My sister's gone again, but I know that pain all too well. I know I haven't lost her. We have a connection, sort of like I'd know if Scully was dead."

"Yeah. If you need leave, I'll give it to you, though you'll be needing it in a couple of days any ways," Skinner said.

"God, why couldn't of this not happened at this moment? This is the worst possible time on Earth."

A soft knock came to the door. Mulder got up. He opened the door. Frohike, Langly and Byers stood on the other side. "What's up, Mulder."

"Samantha was abducted. Doggett told us about it." He sighed. "This is going to be difficult."

"I feel for him. We'll do what ever we can do to help," Langly said.

"Thanks guys. I think as the approach of Scully's due date nears, you guys are going to have to keep an eye on him when we have to go to the hospital."

"We can do that," Frohike said.

"Well, I don't know how much this has affected him. He might be upset right now, and then again his good F.B.I. skills might kick in, and he'll bury the pain.

We'll have to see what happens."

"Alright. I hope things get better soon," Byers said.

Scully got up from the sofa. He had finally fallen asleep. She stretched him out on the couch, walking over to the men. "He's asleep now, and I think in the morning, we should assess how much in shock he really is," Mulder said, "Good plan. When you go to the hospital, I'll be with you, but the Gunmen have decided to keep an eye on him while we're busy dealing with those things. I don't know if I can trust him to be alone."

"Me either," Skinner said. "I'll do what I can do to pull some strings and get leave for all three of you.

You two won't be difficult, but I'm not sure how I can pull this off."

"Alright, Skinner. I'm glad you could help us out. You too, boys," Mulder said.

"Not a problem. He's got a difficult road ahead of him," Byers said.

Mulder asked quietly, "Scully, do you think you can wake him and get him to our guest bedroom. I want him to sleep on a bed."

"Sure. It is one of the few things we can do for him," Scully said.

The next morning, Doggett woke up, looking around him. He wasn't at home, and Samantha wasn't with him.

Then it flooded over him all over again. She was gone, and he was the one to blame.

He knew he was in Mulder and Scully's guest room, and that he must have came over last night to tell them of the abduction. Just as he had woken up, a knock came to the door.

"John, are you awake?" Scully's compassionate voice said on the other side.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm awake," Doggett replied.

"Do you want any breakfast, or would you like to be just left alone for a while?" Scully asked.

"I'll come down for breakfast. Just give me a minute," Doggett said, trying to contain his emotions.

"Okay." Scully's waddling could be heard going down the hall, until she hit the stairs, then silence.

Doggett looked around the room he was staying in. It was nothing like his own room at home, or rather their room. He saw the frilly things Scully must have badgered Mulder into getting, and halfway smiled.

When he got downstairs, Mulder and Scully were eating already, and a plate set out with his favorite breakfast food was already to go. He sat down and began eating in silence.

Scully looked at Mulder, her eyes full of concern.

"How are you holding up this morning, John?"

"I could be better." He had become reserved and closed up. This concerned both of them.

"Okay, but if you need anything, you just ask," Scully said.

In his head, all he could think was [I need her, and she's gone.] He nodded to her, looking down at his plate, pushing the food around on his plate, rather than actually eating.

Mulder was afraid that this would crush Doggett completely. He was afraid that if they weren't careful, they just might end up finding him dead, at least in the early stages of her abduction.

"Would you like to stay here for awhile, Dogg Man?" Mulder asked quietly.

"Yeah, why not," Doggett said with no emotion. Scully let a relieved sigh go, now they could make sure he was safe. "Just let me take a few things of mine from home, like the bedding perhaps." It was his first attempt at some type of humor.

"Alright, as soon as we're done with breakfast here, let's just get that for you," Mulder said.

"On second thought, Mulder, I don't think you will be doing that. Instead you'll be having a baby. NOW!" Scully exclaimed. "My water just broke."

Mulder said, "It did? I've got to call the boys, and we'll get to the hospital. Dogg Man, you just tell those three to take you to your house, and get that stuff for you. Hey, the baby made the decision, not me."

"It's alright. You can't help the baby decidin' to come into the world. Good luck with the birth," Doggett said, now a little happier.

"Boys, it's time, get over here! We're gonna have a baby!" Mulder said excited.

"Now? We'll be over to stay with Doggett, you get going, okay?" Frohike said, his voice small in the phone.

"A baby! We're gonna have a baby! Scully, let's get going," Mulder said, overly excited now.

Doggett watched them fly out the door, and he stayed sitting in the kitchen waiting for the Gunmen. This occasion was exceedingly good, but he still felt very much in shame for last night's occurrence.

The Gunmen arrived shortly after Mulder and Scully had left. Doggett watched them enter with guilt filled eyes. Frohike said, "You holding up?"

"Yeah. Mulduh said we got to get some stuff from my place, I'm staying here for a bit," Doggett said.

"Alright, let's get that, then wait for the call to hear what that baby is. What do you want to do when we get back?" Langly asked.

"Don't know yet, don't care," Doggett said.

The Gunmen all looked at each other with concern in their eyes. It was a good thing that he was going to stay with Mulder and Scully for a while.

They took the short walk over to Doggett's house, entering. He said softly to the three of them, "I'll be right back, just stay here. I want to grab a couple of things."

They all nodded. They all knew how tough it had been in the last twelve hours for him. They stood at the bottom of his stairs, waiting for him to come back.

When he got to his room, he knew exactly what he was going to grab first. He picked up her diary, holding it to his chest for a moment, as emotions swept over him. He also grabbed an extra set of clothes.

When he got down stairs, he said, "Let's get goin'."

They all agreed. They walked back to Mulder and Scully's place. Frohike called Skinner's office.

Skinner answered. "Skinner."

"They're having a baby right now!" Frohike said.

"Right now! Alright, keep me updated. I'm gonna try to get Doggett that leave, alright? You three stay with him," Skinner said.

"We will." Frohike hung up.

Langly was trying to ask Doggett what he wanted to do now. He just clutched the diary in his hands, answering with short simple answers.

"Why don't we just stick in a film, and he can do what he pleases. I don't want him to hurt himself, and he might find himself escaping into the film," Byers said.

Doggett was thinking about the night before. He would wait to read what was written inside, even though he felt that it might invade her privacy. It was his way of getting closer to her while she was missing.

The movie they had picked was an action flick from Mulder and Scully's collection. Langly turned around with the Matrix in hand, asking, "Why don't we watch this one? It might pass the time while we wait for news on the baby. Have you ever seen it, Doggett?"

"Nope. Any good?" He was going to at least try to watch the film, it might let him escape for a bit, and besides, if he couldn't read what she had written at the moment, why not enjoy something. He knew some where in his heart that was what she would want.

Doggett found himself enjoying the movie, though a known hard skeptic, he rather enjoyed science fiction, and wished he had seen this one in the theater. He put Samantha's diary on the coffee table, sitting back to just let the movie take over all his senses for the time being.

Frohike asked, "You guys want some popcorn?"

"Yeah. Sounds good to me," Langly said.

Byers went with Frohike to the kitchen to help make the popcorn, and to talk. "Did you notice something, Frohike?"

"What, Narc?"

"That Doggett is letting himself relax."

"That's good."

"What is with the book he's got with him? Looks like someone's diary." Byers asked.

"Maybe it's Samantha's and he just wants it close to him. They grew close, very close in such a short time.

I just hope this doesn't break his heart. He's turned out to be a great guy to have with us," Frohike said honestly, and in a manner he rarely spoke in.

"Yeah, I know. If he hadn't been there, Samantha might be dead now. I just hope he isn't blaming himself too much for what happened to her last night. I don't think he could have done anything, and I don't think anyone could have prevented it, including Samantha."

"I think you're right. It looks like one of those deals that there was just no way that anyone could have done anything. I just hope it doesn't break him," Frohike said.

"Me too. Let's get back, before Langly gets irritated because he isn't getting his popcorn," Byers said with a smile.

When they got out to the living room, Langly said, "What were you doing? Making a fire with two stones to heat up the stuff out there?"

"Shut up, Punk! It's here now, so you can quit your whining." Frohike snapped back at him.

The phone rang and Frohike ran to get it. "Hello?"

"Frohike, any news on the baby?" Skinner asked.

"Nope. Not yet," Frohike said.

"I got Doggett that leave. I had to twist Kersh's arm off, but I accomplished it," Skinner said. "How is he holding up?"

"He's doing better, we're watching a movie right now," Frohike said.

"Good, give me a call when ever you get any news," Skinner said.

"Alright." Frohike hung up.

"Who was that?" Byers asked.

"Skinner. Wanted to know if there was news on the baby. Doggett, he got you some leave," Frohike said.

"Okay," Doggett said, turning back to the movie. He had his bowl of popcorn, and was staring at the screen, eating it. The movie was a good diversion.

After the movie, Frohike said, "I'm going to go and cook supper."

The rest of the Gunmen followed him into the kitchen.

"If you're cooking, I better make sure you don't cook badly, you always burn the food!" Langly said.

"I better make sure the two of you don't kill each other," Byers said. "Are you going to be okay in here, Doggett?"

"Yeah," Doggett said. He picked up Samantha's diary as soon as they had gone into the kitchen. The first entry was not long after the last diary that he did not know about. Mulder possessed this diary.

July 6, 1979

The aliens let me go today. I'm glad that I'm not with the men who were testing me to see what the aliens had done to me. While I was in the space ship, I began to remember my brother more. His name was Fox, and I wish I could see him, and tell him that I'm going to be okay. I'm almost 15 years old now, and I've been abducted so many times already. I'm not scared any more. I know what they are going to do to me. The black stuff falls on me, and I end up being still.

Others around me are scared, but I don't notice them.

When I'm up there I no longer feel anything. I wish someone would tell me I'm a good person. I hate what I am. I know I'm no longer human, not like others are.

They made me different. I'm staying at a place with a man from the ship. He's preventing the other men from getting me, and finding out about me. I guess I have to stop here for today.

July 13, 1979

I had bad nightmares the past couple of days. The tests are horrible, and though I don't feel anything up there, I remember everything down here, and the dreams, the fears I suppress up there come back to me.

The man with me has to keep an eye on me so I don't attempt to kill myself. They need me to be alive so They can test on me. I stay alive only for Fox and for what ever man is lying in my future. I hope some body will love me some day. I probably don't deserve it, but I am hoping that is what happens. It would be nice. The man told me that I have to go back soon, but They will hold all my stuff. I only have two possessions. It's not like I have much. I have a picture of Fox that They gave me and this diary. It's been difficult right about now, but I know that I will be okay some day, won't I? If only some one would love me...

Doggett closed the diary, the pain that she had lived through was so intense and so sad. He didn't know how she had stayed so sweet and so innocent after all of that. If he could, he would stop all the tests on her and everyone around the world. God, he hated the aliens for their treatment of her.

Frohike called supper, and he went to the table, sitting waiting to be fed. It was something to do, and besides, he was a bit hungry.

Meanwhile, Scully was lying in a hospital bed, with Mulder standing next to her holding her hand. She was having closer and closer contractions, and Mulder wondered if his hand would ever be the same.

Mulder watched Scully's face, she grimaced in pain, but she looked beautiful to him. He wasn't about to voice that at that moment, Scully looked particularly ready to kill him. She squeezed his hand harder, and let a scream escape her lips. It would be the only one, as she bit her lip to concentrate. Mulder was suddenly glad he was not a woman.

The doctor was telling her what progress she was making. Scully knew exactly what was going on, though Mulder wasn't sure exactly. The doctor suddenly held up a living baby. The baby was a boy.

"You have a son," the doctor said. Mulder almost keeled over. A boy, he had a son!

Scully looked tired. The doctor took the baby to clean him up, and took him to be wrapped into a blue blanket. When she gave the baby to Scully, Scully held her child with tenderness. She said, "Welcome to the world, John Fox Mulder."

"John? I thought you were going to name him William," Mulder said, a smile spreading across his face.

"I changed my mind. I decided to name the baby after John. Why not? It has a nice ring to it, don't you think?" Scully said, looking up to Mulder's face for a moment, then back to John's.

John's face was twisted in an expression of extreme displeasure. He began to calm down, looking at his parents for the first time. He had blue/hazel eyes, and a wisp of red hair. Mulder said, "Well, he's sure got a nasty expression on his face. I should call the boys and tell them we have a baby boy. A boy!"

"Mulder, you've turned into such a father," Scully said, smiling at him.

"Why not? A new addition to the family. I'm a father, just think, I'm a father!" Mulder said. He couldn't believe that this day was here. It was a miracle.

"Why don't you go and call the boys and let them know about the baby," Scully said.

"Don't tell them his name. Just tell them that we have a baby boy. I want to surprise John with the name later."

"Alright. I'll go and call them," Mulder said.

Mulder called home. Frohike answered the phone.

"Frohike, we have a baby boy! A boy!" Mulder said excited.

"When can we come and see him?" Frohike demanded.

"In a few days. I'll have to get back to you on that.

Scully I think just wants to get to know the boy, if you ask me. Can you believe it? I'm a father!"

"Well, I better call Skinner, unless you want to tell him yourself."

"No, why don't you do it," Mulder said, "I want to go and see my boy."

"Well congratulations on the son," Frohike said.

"How's Doggett?" Mulder asked.

"He's good. He's doing much better. We watched a movie together, and we had supper. Other than that not much has been going on," Frohike said.

"Well, you tell Skinner. See you guys later," Mulder said.

Frohike said, "It's official. They have a baby boy.

I'll call Skinner. Why don't you pick out a movie, and we'll watch it."

"Okay," Langly said.

Doggett sat down in the living room, preparing to watch another movie. He hoped it was as good as the first movie they had watched. Langly said, "How about T-2? I haven't seen Arnold in awhile," he said Arnold's name as everyone always says it, in the heavy accent, and the voice that imitates his voice.

"Why not. It might be fun," Byers said.

Frohike got off the phone, sitting down to watch the film. "This is going to be a lot of fun. I always love the way Arnold blows that one guy in the leg, and tells the kid he'll live."

"Yeah, be quiet, it's starting," Langly said.

The beginning of the movie was interesting. As the bad guy hit the screen, Doggett just stared at the screen.

He wasn't paying attention to the Gunmen.

Frohike was gawking at what was referred to as the Liquid Metal Guy. It looked just like Doggett. He finally had to say something. "Doggett, do you realize something?"

"No, what?" Doggett asked, never looking in his direction.

"Do you realize you look an awful lot like the bad guy?" Frohike asked.

"I do not."

"You do too," Byers said.

"Do I really?" Doggett asked.

"Exactly like him. You're not him, are you?"

"No, I'm not. What would make you think that?" Doggett asked.

"You do look like him, maybe you're hiding out as an F.B.I. agent."

Doggett started laughing. "What would make an actor hide out as an F.B.I. agent? Yeah, Robert Patrick and I are twins separated by birth. It's my dirty little secret. I couldn't make it on the big screen like he could."

"Really?" Frohike asked.

"No. What planet are you from? I was being sarcastic.

Yeah right, twins separated by birth, you fall for the stupidest things," Doggett said, shaking his head.

"I do not!" Frohike protested.

"You just fell for that. I'd say you do fall for stupid things."

Langly started laughing. "Even so, you do look an awful lot like him. Oh well, can we just watch the stupid movie now? I'd like to see Liquid Metal Guy get shot, and eventually burn up in the pit thing, that's cool. No offense Doggett. I just don't like the Liquid Metal Guy."

"None taken. Arnold gets to be the good guy in the movie, you got to root for the good guy," Doggett said.

"Sh, I'm trying to watch Liquid Metal Guy/Doggett get shot," Frohike said.

"I'm not the Liquid Metal Guy. I think we all proved that when I got shot protecting Samantha. Knock it off," Doggett said.

"I think it's bed time," Doggett said, after the movie ended. He picked Samantha's diary up, heading up the stairs to read, though it was his mask to the Gunmen.

"Alright, we'll be staying down here," Byers said.

"Good night, Doggett."

Once Doggett got upstairs, and had gotten comfortable on the bed, he started to read.

September 24, 1979

I was abducted again, so that's why I haven't written for a while. I don't like the tests. I hate them so much, and I never want to go back. I am now able to do strange things I should not be able to do, unlike other humans. I can hear voices, and it disturbs me. I don't want to hear other people think. I don't like it. Hearing people's thoughts is scary. Why did they have to make me like this? I don't like it. It's not fun, and I don't want to be different. I want to go home, and see Mom and Dad and Fox. I hate it here.

Every so often I get abducted, and then all these things start over. I want to be human. Like I was when I was little.

October 2, 1979

I finally made all voices stop being in my head all the time. It was driving me crazy. I can now listen to only a select few, instead of everyone I come into contact with. I still don't like it. It's not fun, and I don't want to be like this. The man I was living with after my abduction is with me now, and he doesn't love me, not like a father figure should. I don't even know what I would do with someone's love, in any form.

Friendship is scary too. I wish I were a normal little girl, and could go to school, instead of tutoring between abductions. I guess the aliens think I should be able to read and to write, and all that other good stuff. I still hate being here. I write only here because it's the only place where my thoughts and feelings are my own.

November 12, 1979

I'm almost 15. In a couple of weeks. 15, how many years have I been away from Fox? I still miss them. I was abducted again, and now I can make myself invisible. While that sounds fun, I want to only go home, and I want a hug, I want to be told that I'm a good girl, and that I'm smart and pretty. I'd like to meet a nice boy too, that would be nice. I guess I better stop, the practicing I did today was hard.

Doggett closed the diary. He couldn't read any more that night, without throwing himself into a complete depression. She only wanted love and no one would allow her to have that. He wished that she wouldn't have to be up there. If she would only come back.

The next day, Frohike begged Mulder to let them come to see the baby. Mulder finally gave in and said that they could come see the baby.

Frohike said, "Guys, we have to go and see the baby. We better let the boy know who we are, so he knows who to turn to when he's in trouble."

Langly rolled his eyes. "Let's just get there, okay?"

"Alright," Byers said, "We better get going. Doggett, we're going to go see the baby, let's go."

Doggett came down the stairs, dressed and ready to go. He said, "Let's go. I'm anxious to see this boy."

The Gunmen got into their van, while Doggett drove himself to the hospital. When they got there, they went to the room where Mulder and Scully sat with the baby.

Frohike whispered when they entered, "Let's see him."

"Scully asked, "How are you doing, John?"

"I'd be better after I see this boy of yours. Have you got a name for him?" Doggett asked, with a smile.

"Okay, you're going to meet your uncle John, you be nice to him, okay John Fox?"

Doggett smiled. "You named him after me?"

"Yeah, I thought it would be nicer than just reversing Mulder's name. Besides, it has a nice ring to it, don't you think."

"I do. He's a cute kid," Doggett said.

"I'm glad you think so," Frohike said, "Let me see Little John."

"You'll get your turn, just take a chill pill," Doggett said. "Mulder, you ever leave me alone with these three for more than 20 minutes, and I don't know if I'll kill you, them, or myself."

Mulder laughed. "Were they really that bad?"

"What I want to know is how they live with each other?" Doggett looked into John's eyes. He smiled into the baby's face, and the baby looked at him, wondering who he was.

Scully said, "Don't go hogging him, John. Let the others see him."

"Yeah, like me for instance. Let me see that boy of yours, Mulder," Skinner said in the doorway. "I thought I'd come and see what the baby looks like.

John, why not Walter?"

Scully said, "Because Walter Fox doesn't sound right, now does it?"

"No, I guess not," Skinner said with a laugh. Doggett handed him the baby.

"Hey no fair, I was here before Skin Man, and he gets to hold the baby before me. That is just not fair."

Frohike protested.

"But I get to hold the baby before you BECAUSE I am Skin Man," Skinner said.

Mulder started to laugh. "Doggett, I think you're right, how do those three live together," Frohike said, "I resent that."

"I'm sure you do, and I don't care," Mulder said.

Samantha felt the tests growing worse. The woman who had been next to her at the beginning had died shortly afterwards. She felt the pain rip into her heart. She didn't even notice the Black Oil falling on her anymore, or the different tests on her body, changing her more.

Sometimes they would remove her from the chair, so They could have her learn the newest skill she would be given. The newest skill she had received lately was being able to force others to do as she said, and to erase the memories they had of her. She hated it.

A new person was put next to her, and she felt sorry for him. She said to the person, who had been just strapped down, just as she had told the woman who had died, "It's going to be alright, just don't fight Them, and when They are ready, They will let you go."

"How do you know!" The man was terrified.

[I've been here too many times. Don't fight it.] Samantha went with the more direct approach to let him calm down from the shock.

The man looked at her with fear. She said, "I'm an Alien Human Hybrid. I don't want to be, I never asked to be, but the only way I survive is to not fight Them. If you fight, you could die. Just remain calm.

Remain calm." She used her newest skill to help him calm, by forcing him to calm down. It worked.

The tests came, and the Black Oil once again fused to her blood. She hoped that the baby would be okay. She needed the baby to be okay. It was one thing she would want to live, and when she returned, if for some reason for her to die, she hoped that the baby would live for John.

An Alien Bounty Hunter approached her, "Samantha Mulder, you're tests are doing well. You're responding very very well to this testing session."

[Don't I always?] Samantha asked.

"I suppose you do. That's why we always come back for you. You're an excellent test subject."

[I wish I wasn't.]

"Now, you know that's not true. Oh, and by the way, you're baby will be fine. Just fine. We will leave the baby alone for your compliance on coming to the testing without resistance."

Samantha thought to herself, [Resist or Die, I must get home so I can resist and not die. I need to get home to John. I need to get home.]

The whole group left the hospital, and back to Mulder and Scully's place. The Gunmen wanted to straighten up the nursery. Scully already had Mulder put some stuff together that she had in her apartment, but the Gunmen wanted to set it up more.

Doggett only wanted to go to his room, and relax. It had been difficult for the past few days. He was worried about Samantha; worried about what was happening to her. He just wished it had been him, and not her.

When he entered his room, he locked the door, taking out the diary. He opened up to the next entry.

October 24, 1981

I've been abducted for a few years, and I finally came back to Earth. I never ever want to go back. I've expressed that so many times in these pages that it is no longer a question, I'm sure. I don't want to even write about what They did to me in these last tests.

They were horrible, let's leave it at. If I seem sarcastic, what good do I have to look forward to? You tell me? I know They will come for me again, They always do, and I hate Them. The aliens with Their Black Oil, that's what the ABH calls it. I'm nearly 17 now, and you know what, I haven't and probably will never see anyone ever again. I plead that They will just kill me, why let me live through this? I only want to die now. I'll never fit in with Them, or with human kind ever again.

December 25, 1981

I haven't written for awhile. It's not because I was abducted, it was because I didn't feel like writing lately. I want to go home, I want my life before Them.

I want to see Fox, and I know on this Christmas morning I probably never will. I could easily contact him, but I know that the ABH would just kill him on the spot for even attempting to save me from the abductions. I don't even flinch now when the tests take place. Come on, I've been a test subject for Them for eight years now, and I know that it's not going to stop now. They wouldn't just give up on such a promising lab rat. That's all I am, and that's all I'll ever be.

January 3, 1982

I was allowed to talk to a boy today. He was around my age, and he told me I was pretty! Me, Alien Girl Samantha. I didn't tell him anything, but I want to resist these tests. I want to resist Them. Maybe he can help me? I don't know, maybe I'm hoping for too much. He said that he wanted to take me out to dinner in a couple of days. I'll have to see what happens then. Should I tell him?

Doggett closed his eyes for a minute. In 1982 she had been a repeated abducted for eight years. How many years had They been abducting her as of now? Twenty eight years! Doggett felt anger wash over himself. How could any one be sold into this lab rat life? It made him want to bring William Mulder back to life, and kill him all over again. He was extremely happy that Scully had named the baby John.

He began to read again, even though the entries were painful. It made him feel closer to Samantha, and that was why he persisted at reading.

January 5, 1982

That boy took me out to dinner, and I kept myself silent about my plans. He thought I was a nice girl, and that he'd like to take me out again. So far the ABH has made himself look normal for the boy. His name is Joey. He kind of looks like Fox in his latest picture, just a bit more chubby. He's very nice though.

January 11, 1982

I told Joey about my life. He laughed at me! Actually laughed at me! I got so angry at him for this that I showed him what they've done to me. He stopped laughing right away, and then told me that I was a freak. Am I a freak? I must be. No one will ever consort with a freak like me. Why should they? I'll probably hurt them and I won't even mean it. I'm feeling like dying again. It's not just that teenage angst, it's the fact that I don't have any future. I know a lot of people will say but you're so young! So what. I should be 80 rather than 17.

March 30, 1982

I was abducted again. I never want to go there again, this time was worse. They tested me, and then They made me do things I never want to do ever again. They made me assist with the disposal of the dead test subjects. It made me sick a couple of times, just when I think things can't get worse. Why doesn't someone just put a gun to my head and pull the trigger? It'd be less painful than this slow death I'm living.

Doggett wondered if she still wanted to die now. It concerned him that she was so suicidal in this time of her life. [She doesn't have any future at this point.

Oh Samantha, I'll find you back.]

A knock on the door startled him. His voice was choked with emotions when he answered, "Yeah?"

"Supper, thought you might like to know." Byers voice said.

"I'll be down in a bit," Doggett said, closing the diary after he had marked his place.

When he got down the stairs, he was silent, and withdrawn. He didn't really want to see anyone, but he needed food, his stomach told him of that.

Frohike looked up from his short stature, asking, "What's the matter, Doggett?"

"Nothin', leave me alone," he snapped at Frohike.

Frohike said, "What got into you, any ways?"

"I said nothin'!" Doggett was getting more irritated by the second. He sat down at the table, and stared at his plate, waiting to be served some supper.

Frohike said to Byers in the kitchen, "Doggett is in a sour mood. I don't know what it is, besides missing Samantha."

"He didn't sound happy when I told him supper was ready. Sounded upset actually," Byers said.

"He won't tell me anything," Frohike said.

When they got out into the dining room, Byers asked, "How are you holding up, Doggett?"

"Fine." His voice was clipped. "Why can't you just leave me be? That's all I'm askin' ya to do."

"We just don't want to see you upset," Byers said, trying to calm him down.

"Calm down! I don't need you to tell me that I need to calm down!" Doggett shouted.

Langly looked at the other two. He didn't know what to do, so he kept his mouth shut, and served up the meal.

Doggett felt bad for snapping at them. "I'm sorry, I'm just havin' a hard time, that's all."

Byers said, "Is it partly because of the book you brought with you?"

Doggett sighed. "It's not a book. It's a diary, Samantha's diary," he said it so softly. "You know what they did to her?"

The Gunmen looked at each other. They didn't know how to react. Should they ask him, or leave him be?

"Those, those beings tortured her for years. She wanted to die so badly..." Doggett trailed off. He didn't want to get too upset. Something could come up and he would be needed to take action.

Byers said, "I'm sorry. Any thing we can do?"

"I don't know. I wish I could have stopped her from being in those tests. Why wasn't it me this time? I'd much rather it be me then her."

"You can't blame yourself for Them abducting her.

Doggett, it's not your fault," Byers said in a quiet voice. He kneeled down to look Doggett in the face.

"You have to believe she's holding up better this time, she knows you love her."

Doggett looked into Byers face, then closed his eyes.

A single tear escaped his will to calm down. "Why does anyone have to go through this?"

"Maybe so they can help others and prevent something like this from happening." Byers whispered.

"But why her? Why not someone else? I couldn't possibly wish this on someone else, no one should have to suffer like this," Doggett said, his eyes staying closed.

"I know, but you can at least know that when she returns to you, that she'll be happy again. She'll know that you love her, and that you want to help her."

"I just want her to come back, she's suffered enough already," Doggett said.

While Byers was talking to Doggett, Frohike gave the hospital a call. "Mulder?"

"Yeah. What is it, Frohike?" Mulder asked.

"Doggett is upset. Byers is trying to talk to him, but I don't think any one of us can help him feel any better about this. Do you think you might be able to come home for a bit, and straighten things out?"

"Yeah, Scully's getting pretty ticked at me anyway. I should be there in just a bit. Keep him as calm as you can," Mulder said, his voice revealing that he knew exactly how Doggett felt.

Frohike hung up, turning back to see Doggett trying desperately to contain his emotions. Frohike knew that this wasn't because he didn't want them to see him upset, he knew that Doggett felt that if he was to let go, that he might do something horrible, or never stop being upset. Once the flood gates opened, he might never stop.

A little while later, Mulder walked in the door.

Mulder reeled back for second, then gathered his composure. He felt exactly what Doggett was feeling, mainly from his thoughts. Mulder said, "Let me talk to him, boys. Alone. I'll give you three a call later."

Byers said in passing while leaving, "He's very upset, I don't know what to do for him. Help him."

Mulder nodded. He sat where Byers had, kneeling on the floor. He took Doggett's hand to get his attention.

"Doggett? Can we talk?"

Doggett nodded. "Yeah."

"Okay, I want you to tell me what is bothering you the most. What hurts the most," Mulder said, trying to sound soothing to calm Doggett down.

Doggett said, "Shortly before Samantha was taken this time, she took her diary to my place. It's one of the only things she has of her own, besides your picture.

While she's been gone, I've been reading it. It makes me feel closer to her, ya know?"

"And, what does it say? Would you mind letting me see it, too?" Mulder asked, still in the calming voice.

"Yes. I'll go and get it." Doggett got up, to grab it from his room. When he came back down stairs, he was holding the worn little book in his hands. "This is it."

Mulder took it from him, skimming quickly over the entries that Doggett had read, up to the part where he had marked. When he was finished, he looked sad and forlorn. "This should be me."

Doggett looked into Mulder's eyes. The pain was immense, and he wondered how he carried it for so long. Mulder got his composure back. "I know how you feel. You're blaming yourself for her latest abduction. I know this not because I've read your mind, but because I've been there. I've been there for 28 years. I've been kicking myself in the ass since it happened. But we have something new, we have something to not only understand what is going on, but we know that she will be back. I never had that."

Doggett whispered, "All those years. She told me that your father sold her into this life. That he had to choose between you or her, and that for some reason he picked her."

"I've been aware of it for awhile, but I was never sure if it was true, that Black Lunged bastard tried to tell me that," Mulder said, looking down at the table. "I have a diary of Sam's, too. I got it from an army base that she was being kept at, probably after she was caught by the Syndicate after an abduction.

I'll go get it."

Doggett watched Mulder go up the stairs. He knew the man felt this abduction deep in his heart, and that the wound was always being ripped open again and again. It pained him to see this, because he felt this pain as well.

Mulder came back down the stairs. His face was sad looking, and he slumped as he walked. His eyes were intense and full of pain. Doggett sat waiting, hoping that Mulder wouldn't break down.

He said softly, "This is the diary about the doctors tests that they did after her abduction. She wants to run away from this place, and shortly after that it stops. She was tested on there, too. Refers to herself as an old worn out suitcase. She hates the tests here, and the doctors."

Doggett looked at the first diary. Mulder's voice spoke, "She says here something about not knowing who her brother is, me, but she thinks I have brown hair and that I used to tease her. She states that she wants me to read this at some point. She doesn't mention the aliens, but I'm assuming this is the first time back on Earth," Doggett said, "Why, why does anyone need to go through with this?"

Mulder shook his head. "I don't know. I really don't know." Mulder rubbed a hand over his face. He said, "So, in this second diary, she writes about the aliens? God, my father was a bastard for doing this to her." Mulder got angry, knocking a vase off the table.

Doggett knew how he felt. "I don't know why he did that, but the fact is your father did this to her. If he hadn't sold her into this, she'd be a happier person."

"Let's see what the next entry says," Mulder said.

Doggett opened it, reading the first entry out loud.

April 2, 1982

I met another boy today. He seems nice, but I'm going to wait to tell him about the ABH, and what I really am. I don't want to be called a freak, though I know I am. I have to be. The ABH says that I'm going to be staying here for a while, but not for how long. He also said that soon they will be having me live on my own, as long as I comply to showing up for testing.

Maybe I'll be able to be able to talk to this boy. His name is Steve. He's rather young, and he doesn't look a thing like Fox. He's very nice though. He asked me if we could maybe do something, what ever that is. I'm excited about this. It makes me feel a bit more human, more loved, a bit more wanted and needed.

Doggett looked up to see Mulder's eyes tear up a bit.

He said, "Do you want to hear more?"

Mulder nodded silently. He didn't think he could speak without breaking down. It felt a little bit better having someone to share this pain with him.

Doggett took a breather for a moment. "I'm going to stop for a minute, need a break to calm down." He closed his eyes, and sighed. Mulder noticed the tears streaming silently down his face.

Doggett began reading again, though his voice wavered.

April 4, 1982

Steve told me something very important today. He told me that he had been abducted by aliens. They had returned him 2 years ago, and he hasn't been abducted ever again. I wanted to tell him that I'm a multiple abducted but I'm still unsure of how he will take it.

Steve is very very nice, and I think I might be his friend, I hope.

April 6, 1982

I told Steve what happened to me today. He didn't laugh, he didn't call me a freak, though as I told him this, I felt like one. He was very caring about it, but I know in his thoughts that he is afraid of me. I didn't tell Steve my real name. I feel like I am the song Ruby Tuesday, you know the one by the Stones? I feel as if I need to be free, and that if I lose my dreams I'll lose my mind, guess that's the only music I remember. That's what I told Steve to call me, just in case it might get him abducted by knowing who I really am. I hate this, and I just want this to be over. I want to be normal.

April 12, 1982

I met another boy today. He's not like Steve, and he asked about the reason I was wearing a long sleeved shirt in the spring. I told him because I'm too cold.

He tried to tackle me to see what was wrong with my arms after I refused to roll up my sleeves. The scars there were horrendous, and I know that in a matter of time they will fade, the Black Oil heals that problem.

He just gawked at me, and asked if my father did this to me. Since he had seen the scars, I decided to tell him who I really was. He ran from the room. Why do I deserve this torture? I just want to go back to Fox, I want to be happy.

December 1989

Was abducted again. Don't want to talk about it. Tests were horrible, and I don't want to think about them. I really want to die this time. The ABH had to remove all objects from my grasp, and make sure that I couldn't use my own powers against myself to make myself die. I wish I could make myself die, then I wouldn't be in this place any more. God, if You are out there, please just let me die.

Doggett had to stop. He saw Mulder sobbing next to him. He marked the place, and said, "Mulder, do you think she wants to die now?"

Mulder simply nodded his head yes. Doggett held Mulder as he, himself started to cry. The pain expressed in the pages was so immense, so profound. Mulder whispered out, "That should have been me."

"Mulder, we can't go blamin' ourselves, the more we blame ourselves, the more we'll start thinking like that. I don't want her to feel like this, I know that this is horrible."

Mulder sighed, and his sobbing subsided a bit. "I want to make sure that she never has to go back, I only wish I could do so. Doggett, it's a lot of help for me to have someone know what it's like to miss her. You know what it feels like."

"Yeah. I want her to come home."

Krycek had followed Mulder from the hospital, and now he watched the painful scene inside. He didn't know that Samantha was gone until then. He decided he would ruin this scene by making one of his own. He strode through the door, gun in hand.

"Well, well. Doggett, you don't have Samantha to protect you this time."

"KRYCEK! What the hell are you doing here!" Mulder screamed. Heightened by the pain he was feeling from his sister's loss, and now the anger fueled by both his father's betrayal, and now this.

"Just thought I'd drop in on your sob party. So, how's the kid, Mulder?"

"You stay away from him, or I swear I'll kill you."

"What, with out Samantha's aid? What are you to tell me, that you'll be able to kill me?" Krycek sneered.

Mulder felt himself out of control. He felt himself cloud Krycek's mind, and start to disappear, it just happened to Doggett as well. Mulder spoke, his voice coming from nothing.

Krycek's eyes widened. "You're both freaks! What did they do to you?"

"You'd be best to be leaving, I think." Mulder's voice came from behind Krycek then.

Krycek jumped turning around. Nothing. Doggett took his chance, and slugged Krycek in the back of the head. Krycek fell to the floor, dazed.

"Tells you where to stick your threats. Where the sun don't shine!" Doggett said with satisfaction.

Mulder reappeared. "Sorry about that. I do that sometimes."

"Don't worry about it, it gave us an edge." Doggett stared down at Krycek's dazed form. "I don't like you.

I don't like what you try to do, and I don't like the fact you tried to kill Samantha."

"What are you, her sweetie?"

"What is it to ya?" Doggett said, kicking him for the offense.

"Nothing. You're in love with her." Krycek sneered.

"None of your business," Doggett said.

"Oh, so it's true. You and Mulder are chummy chum, and you love his sister. The little witch who is getting what she deserves."

"Do you want to die, Krycek?" Mulder growled.

"Yeah, like you'd kill me." Krycek spat at Mulder's feet.

"I just might. Get lost. You're kind isn't welcome here, I'm telling you."

Krycek got up off the floor, and walked out the door.

He said over his shoulder, "Don't sleep with your eyes closed, Mulder. That baby of yours, it just might not make it very far."

Mulder drew his gun, ready to chase after him. Doggett grabbed his arm. "No. You don't want him to lure you into a trap."

"You're right. That stupid rat idiot is trying to set us up. Damn, if I could have just put a bullet in his back. The world would be a better place."

The next few days, Doggett was called in to explain to Kersh why he had taken leave. Doggett was just going to tell the truth, he knew that he couldn't lie, and he couldn't think of anything plausible to cover it up with, and neither could Mulder.

Doggett sat in the office, with only Kersh. He looked around quickly to see if anyone was there. Kersh looked at Doggett, "Agent Doggett. I'm sure you know why you are here. You have taken some leave recently that is now in question."

"I know this, Sir," Doggett replied.

"Would you mind explaining yourself to me." Kersh said.

"Alright. I'll give you the truth. Those days that Skinner requested for me off, they were taken off because Samantha Mulduh was re abducted one night."

"Samantha Mulder is dead and was never found. Get to the point, Agent. Your career could rest on this."

Kersh ground out in anger.

"Samantha Mulduh is not dead. She was kept hidden and she reappeared. She lived with me for a few weeks before her latest abduction. I saw it happen," Doggett said, clenching his teeth.

"That's impossible, unless Agent Mulder stuck ideas into your head."

"Agent Mulduh isn't at fault here," Doggett said.

"Oh, and how is he not? He's infected you with his search for his sister, a case closed last spring."

Kersh said.

"I know that the file is officially closed. If you want evidence of her existence, I can provide that for you," Doggett replied.

"I don't think that would be wise, Agent. She doesn't exist any more as a living person. You've obviously let Mulder take the situation over since he came back."

"You put one more slur on Agent Mulduh and I don't know if I'll be able to contain myself, Sir," Doggett said, his voice lowering.

"Agent, you refuse to see what is happening. Samantha Mulder is not alive. You have to know that. The aliens part, they were all made up in Mulder's head."

"I've had enough." Doggett charged out of the office.

He felt like punching Kersh, but knew that would only hurt anything they had to do. Walking out on Kersh, before dismissal was enough to get him a disciplinary action placed on him. Suddenly it didn't matter.

He stormed into the basement office, and sat down at his desk. He found a note left for him. It read, She's no longer with us

If you want to see her alive again

You'll give up your secrets

Other wise she's dead

There was no signature, and it was on his desk, not Mulder's. He picked it up, and left to go to the Gunmen's. They might be able to get something out of it more than Mulder right then.

Doggett walked quickly up to the Gunmen's door, after slamming his car door. He pounded on the door, yelling, "Come on, open up, will ya!"

Frohike opened all five of the locks, asking, "What is wrong, Doggett?"

"Death threat. Some one is playing games with me," Doggett said.

Frohike shut the door, "Let's see it."

Doggett shoved the note into Frohike's hand. Frohike read it, "This looks like the work of Alex Krycek.

He's trying to get you angry, so you'll do something incredibly stupid."

"Ya think so? I mean, he did show up at Mulduh's a couple of days ago. That's when he learned of Sam's abduction," Doggett said, sighing. He ran a hand over his face.

Langly said, "Mulder told us something about that.

Krycek might do something like this, especially if he knows it'll get you riled up, and he can't get access to make you angry in person. Have you told Mulder?"

"Nope. Not yet, wanted to see what you boys could do for me first," Doggett said.

"I'll call Mulder. This might be not just about Samantha. Though it does look like Krycek has a vendetta against you for some reason."

"I think I might have pissed him off by having Sam around, and the fact that I prevented his kill shot," Doggett said, anger rising in him.

"I'd imagine that would tick Krycek off. He likes to be the efficient killer, always has. He just doesn't count sometimes on other people reacting, that's all."

Byers said.

"I'd figured that out already," Doggett said. "Now the next thing is to assess what to do about it."

"Mulder's on his way," Frohike said.

Meanwhile Alex Krycek had gone to Mulder's house to steal the diary that Doggett so treasured. If he couldn't upset him with the note, and get some type of reaction, this would work. He wouldn't do anything to it but steal it. To get it back, Doggett would have to make some type of exchange.

He found it in Doggett's room, and smiled. This had been easy. The diary looked worn. He cracked the diary open to the last posts before her abduction just recently. They read:

January 17, 2001

I feel for the first time in my entire life loved and needed. John has shown me love, love that I've never seen in anyone before. I have all I could ever want now, after all the years of testing, after all the years of pain. I'm no longer the Alien Freak that no one will be nice to. I don't have to hide behind just my Resistance and know that the other Resistors are all I have. I have my brother, and his family. I have John. I'm grateful, and even though I know I will have to go back to the nightmarish tests, the tests that I have loathed my entire life, I have to wonder if I would have met John without them. The ABH will come for me soon, and I will ascend into that hell hole, but I know one thing that will happen when I do, I will not be afraid, I will not be upset, and no matter how horrible the tests, I will be loved when I come home, I will be needed, and I won't ever feel like dying ever again. Gone are the years upon years of wishing for the Angel of Death. The Angel has passed over me and now another has descended over me. Love.

Thank you God for this gift, my suffering is well paid.

Krycek shut the diary. Samantha had been tortured for years. He wondered if he could somehow understand this Resistance. He had tried his own Resistance with the Rebels, but that had failed, when they had turned on him. He paged through, noticing that she referred to herself as an Alien Human Hybrid. [So that's what they did to her and Mulder.]

Just as he was going to leave, he felt a cold gun push up against his head, and a voice growl, "Put that down or I'll pull this trigger. Don't think I won't be afraid to," Doggett said.

Krycek did as told. He felt himself shoved up against the wall next to the bed, and heard Doggett shout, "Mulduh, in here!"

"How did you know, Doggett?" Krycek asked.

"Let's just say I'm no dummy. You don't deserve anything but a bullet in the back of the head."

Doggett snarled.

Mulder charged into the room, his gun drawn. Mulder said in a deathly quiet voice, "If you want to live, you'll tell me what you were doing here or I'll just let Doggett pull that trigger."

Krycek snarled in Russian. "You wouldn't dare let him kill me."

"Why do you think that?" Mulder replied.

"Because you know I can be of great service to you. I can do something for you that will take that Black Lunged Son of a Bitch out of power. You know what, I can help you."

"Yeah, and I'm not stupid enough to fall for that this time. You killed my father, though now I think you might have done us a service, you still killed him.

You double crossed me, and I'm not going to let you do so again."

Krycek tried to take Doggett out, so he could turn around and shoot Mulder. Doggett kneed him in the back of the knee. Krycek crumpled down to the floor kneeling.

"Now, tell me what you were doing here, and I might decide to listen to you."

"I was here to get something." Krycek said.

"We noticed," Doggett said.

"I wanted that diary, it's got answers in it, it's got what we need."

"That diary doesn't have anything in it, except the painful life of a woman, and I'm not about to let you have it," Doggett said.

"What purpose do you want with the pain of my sister?" Mulder asked, his anger showing, but under control.

"What they did to her, what they did to you, we can resist." Krycek grunted out.

"We have our own Resistance. We're doing just fine."

"I want to resist, not only Them, but Cancer Man. I tried once."

"You aren't lying to me. You want to resist, I can tell. How do I know you won't just back stab me? That you won't go after my child? That you won't try to kill Doggett here?"

"You have my word, I won't do anything to harm you or anyone around you."

"I don't buy it. You want something."

"Only the same thing you do, Mulder."

"What is that?" Mulder asked, wondering what he was getting himself into.

"We both want to see Cancer Man fall. I can help you with that, I can make something happen."

"What do you get in return for it? You'll want some type of payment."

"The satisfaction that he is really dead."

"No, you kill him, and you'll want to take his place in power. Krycek, you lie too frequently. You want to resist, but you spend your time being a two time double agent. Forget it."

"So, you're going to let him kill me?"

"No, not my style. Doggett, ease up."

Doggett moved away from Krycek, gun still drawn and aimed. His eyes pleaded with Mulder for a moment, then locked onto Krycek. Krycek stood up, grimacing.

"Thanks for letting me live."

"Yeah, so you can damn yourself some more. If I have to see your face one more time..."

"How did you know I was here?" Krycek demanded.

"Your little note read something in between the lines, I figured you'd deposit my sister's diary at Cancer Man's feet, giving him the greatest tool ever in the world, then you would get what ever you wanted in the world."

"You're good. You know that don't you? You pieced exactly what my plans were together and used them against myself. By the way, Doggett, she's pregnant."

Doggett's firearm fell to the floor, his firing arm to his side. He was so surprised by what Krycek had just said, that he had gone into shock. "How do you know that?"

"Obviously you didn't know. It's in her last entry in her diary. The night before she left." Krycek said.

Doggett picked it up, reading what she had written. He couldn't believe that this was true.

Krycek said, "You brought something to her life, you know that don't you?"

"What are you trying to do, Krycek?" Mulder asked, trying to gage the man's next move.

"Do I really always have to be doing something?"

"Come on, Krycek, in all the time I've known you, you have to get a little to give a little."

"I want to join you."

"No you don't, you want to back stab me."

"You read minds too well."

"This banter is irritating me. Why don't you leave and tell Cancer Man everything you just learned?"

"What, and play Judas?"

"That's what you're good at."

"Give me a chance."

"Why should I? You tried to steal my sister's diary, one of her only possessions."

"Because I can be a big help to you."

Mulder stopped the banter for a moment, then said in Krycek's mind, [You betray me once, and I'll have Doggett here kill you. We'll get away with it, too.] Krycek's eyes widened. "I won't lie and I won't double cross, I promise."

[You better not.] Mulder tilted his head towards the door. "You better get going. Remember what I told you."

Krycek walked past both men. Doggett asked, "What did you tell him?"

"I told him that if he back stabs me, I'll let you kill him."

"Can you believe that she's pregnant? Oh my God, she's with those evil aliens," Doggett said, his head in his hands.

"I'm sure they'll both be fine."

"She didn't tell me."

"Maybe she meant to," Mulder said, putting a hand on Doggett's back. "Speaking of babies, mine is coming home in two days."

"Well, that's good news. Little John should enjoy being here."

"Yeah, as long as he's fed," Mulder said, laughing.

"Let's hope that he doesn't back stab us."

When Scully arrived home a couple of days later, baby in tow, she went to the nursery to put John there. She noticed that Doggett had a goofy grin on his face.

"What you smiling about?" Scully asked him.

"Sam's pregnant." He kept his sentence short.

"She is? Well, congratulations. I'm sure you wish she would come back home. How did you find out, for that matter?"

"Her diary, okay, Krycek told me. I'm sure Mulder told you all about that meeting."

"Yeah. He's really ticking me off," Scully said.

Doggett asked, "Can I go and see him?"

Scully smiled, "Of course you can, John. By all means go ahead."

Doggett walked into the nursery, looking at the small infant boy. He smiled when the baby looked at him, though he knew that the baby didn't really know who he was. He said, "You're gonna like your uncle John more, aren't ya?"

The baby just gurgled at him. He couldn't believe that Sam would be coming back to him carrying his child. It also made him sad, Samantha was still up there. He felt his happiness diminish for a few moments, until Little John cooed at him. They had all taken to calling him Little John.

Doggett walked out of the nursery. Mulder was in a buzz of excitement. He asked, "What's got you so excited?"

"They found her! The Gunmen found her!" Mulder said.

"What do ya mean they found her?" Doggett asked.

"They found Samantha! She's doing fine, and you're supposed to meet her at the meeting place. FDR Memorial. She wants to come home from what the Gunmen said. You better get going!"

Part Two: The Lord Giveth, The Lord Taketh Away

Doggett grabbed his jacket, running to his car. He didn't even say goodbye to anyone. He drove quickly to the FDR Memorial, fearing that she wouldn't be there, and that the Gunmen had been wrong. He was suddenly nervous about meeting her, what if she didn't want to see him ever again?

He got to the fountain, sitting down. She wasn't here yet. He sat, his eyes closed, listening to the water for a moment, trying to calm his nerves down. He didn't want to be disappointed and have to disappoint Mulder too.

He sighed a couple of times, taking deep breaths. To have her return a few weeks later, that would be gracious because it would be two weeks, almost starting three.

"John," Samantha whispered.

Doggett opened his eyes, looking up to see her. She looked bruised and a little battered. He stood up, hugging her to him. He kissed her, his mouth hungrily taking hers. "I missed you terribly. I worried about you constantly."

Samantha started to cry, her emotions were overflowing. "What's wrong, Sam?"

"Nothing, nothing. I'm so glad to be home. Take me home," she begged him.

"Anything. Were They terrible to you?" Doggett asked.

"Not any more than usual." Her voice revealed fatigue and despair.

"Sam, let's go home." He walked her to the car, opening the car door for her, shutting it after she had gotten in. "Do you want to stop at your brother's place and see the baby?"

"It came?"

"He came, the little devil," Doggett said.

"Tomorrow. I just want to go home and be with you."

When they got into their place, Doggett sat down on the couch with her. Samantha had been crying a bit, but now she wrapped her arms around Doggett, sobbing heavily.

Doggett held her closer, his arms rubbing her back.

"It's okay. They don't have you anymore."

"I was so afraid for awhile." She burrowed her face into his shoulder.

"I'm here, I'm here. It's goin' to be okay. I love you," Doggett whispered into her hair.

"I know. It's what kept me going up there. I have something to tell you. I'm pregnant," Samantha whispered, after she had pulled away from him for a moment. "This is going to be difficult, the baby won't be fully human. You know that, don't you? It will be the first child born of an Alien Human Hybrid."

Doggett cupped her face in his hands. "What ever happens, I'm sure we'll love the baby very very much."

"If it has to be tested on, I don't know what I will do. Oh John, They were as horrible as ever," she started to cry into his shoulder again, sobs taking her over.

Doggett held her again, silence taking them over. It felt good to have her in his arms again. Why did this have to happen? He started rocking her, trying to soothe her. Tears of mixed emotions flowed down his own cheeks.

She eventually fell asleep, fatigue taking over her battered body. He sighed, sitting back, pulling her onto his chest. He didn't want to disturb her by carrying her up the stairs at the moment. She still had her arms wrapped around him.

He stroked her hair, staring off into the distance.

The pain she felt was so overwhelming. Too many years of pain. The baby she carried concerned him. He knew that the baby would be different, but he prayed that the baby would be more human.

He would have to thank the Gunmen later for alerting them of finding Samantha. He was ever grateful to them. A soft knock came to the door. Mulder stood on the other side, holding her diary. He whispered, "I'll leave this here, she okay?"

"Yeah, she should be fine, but I don't know just yet. All of the emotions she probably had up there just all flooded out," Doggett whispered back.

"Alright. See you two in the morning," Mulder said, quietly shutting the door.

Doggett stood up slowly, and cradled Samantha easily.

He carried her listless form up to the bedroom, placing her gently down onto the bed. He tucked her under the blankets.

Before he went to bed, he checked all the locks. He wanted to be sure.

He climbed into the bed with her, encircling himself around her, as if he was a human shield, and the world would have to come through him to get to her. He slipped into the velvety blackness of sleep shortly after.

The next morning, Doggett woke next to Samantha. She was still asleep and he smiled. He still had his arms around her. She sighed in her sleep, rolling over, facing him.

He wished he didn't have to go to work. Kersh would be furious with him. He had walked out on Kersh after all. Samantha was back. The man wouldn't believe and if he did, he would use it against them. He knew this.

He sighed. The pure happiness of having her back made him overjoyed and ready to face anything. She woke up, looking in to his face. "Good morning, John."

"Good mornin', sunshine. You feelin' any better?" Doggett asked.

"Much. I'm feeling much better. Do you have to go to work today?" Samantha asked, not wanting him to leave.

"'Fraid so. I'm sure I'm in a lot of trouble already."

"I walked out on the Director."

"What ever for?" Samantha asked, her eyes questioning him.

"Said you didn't exist outside of that little girl. I took leave after you were abducted, and he wanted an explanation. I gave it to him."

"I got a plan. You go in today, he gets all angry, probably telling you that you fell under the spell of my brother. Just as he's about to say I don't exist, I walk in and introduce myself. How about it?"

"Sounds like fun. I don't like Kersh," Doggett said.

"I can see why. He attack Fox very often?"

"All the time. Says he's just a crack-pot, that type of thing," Doggett said, smiling. He kissed her. "Why don't we get dressed and see the baby before we go?"

"I can't wait to see him. He's got to be cute."

"Very. Now move it, we got things to do, people to see."

"I'm moving, I'm moving," Samantha said with a smile.

Her back was riddled with bruises. Doggett saw them, asking, "What's this?"

"Oh those? Those will fade in about 15 minutes. Don't worry, they're there from when you jerk unintentionally in the chair. You slam your back into the hard chair. It smarts but I don't even notice anymore."

"You shouldn't have to deal with that."

"I know, but the fact is this is the way it is." She gave him eyes full of pain mixed with love. "Besides, I have advantages. My bruises on my face are already gone."

He noticed that they already were. He walked over to where she sat. "Don't ever leave me again."

"Can't help when I'm called for testing. Until we can really get the Resistance going, I will have to go back at some point. I don't want to, but I will, otherwise They might kill someone I love very much. I don't want to risk that."

"I don't want you going back up there. You shouldn't have to." He kneeled on the floor in front of her. He took her face in his hands, kissing her. "We better get ready."

When they arrived at Mulder and Scully's, Mulder threw the door open. He took Samantha into his arms, hugging her. "Are you okay, Sam?"

"I'm fine. I want to see this young boy of yours," she said with a smile.

"Right this way. Dogg Man, Kersh wants to fry you."

"I know, I know. Sam's going with me."

Mulder smiled and started to laugh. "That should shut him right up when she walks through that door."

"Exactly. He ticked me off."

"I bet. He's really good at that."

Samantha came out holding the baby. "What did you name him?"

"John. We all call him Little John." Mulder told her, pride shining on his face.

"Well, Little John, your aunt Samantha is happy to see you. Did you know that?" Little John gurgled at her.

Samantha smiled. "You named him after John?"

"Yep. Actually Scully did. She decided that it would be better than naming him my names in reverse."

"I totally agree. He has your eyes, Fox."

"But has his mother's attitude and her hair."

"I noticed. How long does Scully have to take leave?"

"Until she feels ready to go back to work. We already have a babysitter list in place," Mulder said.

"Oh? Please tell me it's not those friends of yours," Samantha said, her eyes pleading with him.

"Yes, the boys would be an excellent choice, along with Scully's mom."

"Alright, that makes up for all the damage they'll do."

"Sam, we should get going. Put Little John back, and we'll get going," Doggett said.

"Oh alright, but I was having fun holding the baby."

"We'll come over to your place for dinner, unless you want to come to ours," Mulder said.

"I want to stay home. Home, I've never had a home before," Samantha said.

"Well, that is certainly one thing that will change.

Let's go, before I'm in the fire and out of the frying pan," Doggett said.

They left to go to the office. Samantha cloaked herself from everyone except Doggett. He lead her through the halls of the F.B.I. to the Director's office. The secretary looked to see him arrive. "Go right in, Agent Doggett. He's expecting you."

Doggett walked in, Samantha still cloaked by the door on the inside. Kersh stood up, directing Doggett to take a seat. "I'm sure you know why you are here, Agent."

"Of course, Sir."

"You may be facing disciplinary action for stepping out of the office before dismissal. As far as the Samantha Mulder case, you will never speak of her again. Do you read me clear."

"What if I told you that I know where she is."

"When you were assigned to the X-Files I thought you were a good agent. I pegged you wrong, Agent Doggett."

"Oh really, Sir? I think you might want to ask me that first." Samantha decloaked herself.

Kersh jumped. "Who are you?"

"I'm Samantha Mulder. I believe you should apologize to Agent Doggett, my brother Agent Fox Mulder, and me."

"You, you're not Samantha Mulder!"

"I have been since I was born. How could I not be her? Last time I checked that's who I was," Samantha said, a smile playing across her lips. Her posture revealed that she felt that she had power.

"If you're Samantha Mulder, then where were you?"

"With Them."

"The aliens."

"That's a load of BS."

"Is it really?"

Kersh didn't know how to respond. He gathered his thoughts, replying, "I don't know who you are, I don't know why you are here, but I can have you removed."

"Try me." Samantha disappeared in front of his eyes.

"I'd like to see them catch someone they can't see or touch."

"What are you, some type of freak?"

"I was created by Them. They made me like this. I'm sure you understand that." Her voice came from behind Kersh. Kersh tried to turn around to see her standing behind him, but by that time she had gone to the other side, reappearing.

"Director Kersh, Sir, I think you should back off the no Samantha Mulduh thing, obviously," Doggett said, a grin on his face.

Kersh turned to respond, finding Samantha in his face.

"No, no. You forget, I have increased speed."

Kersh didn't know what to do. Samantha backed up.

"This has been a lot of fun. I think I have some Resistance things to do, John." She kissed him, cloaking herself as she left.

"What was that?" Kersh demanded, regaining control.

"That, Sir, was Samantha Mulduh."

Mulder looked up from his files on his desk. He knew that Scully had to be bored at home. After all, she hadn't been allowed to work for a while. He thought he would bring some lunch home to her.

He locked up the office after he left a note for Doggett. Then he went to the parking lot to drive to a nice take out place. He wanted to surprise her with a lunch. He also had another surprise in store for her.

He picked up a nice salad with ranch dressing, a piece of apple pie and a diet Coke for Scully. He knew that she would want that, but hoped that she wouldn't think he thought her fat.

For him, he picked up a greasy burger and fries. There was pop at home. He drove from the restaurants to their house.

He unlocked the front door, walking through. "Scully, I'm home for lunch!"

Scully came out, greeting him. She gave him a kiss.

"What did you get me?"

"A salad, piece of pie, and a diet Coke."

"Mulder, how sweet of you. Set it on the table."

Mulder let a sigh of relief escape him. She didn't think he thought her fat. They sat down at the table and began to eat. Mulder said, "So, how is Little John?"

"Sleeping," Scully said, her fork stabbing a piece of lettuce.

Mulder pulled out a little box, setting it next to his plate, where Scully couldn't see it. That would wait.

"Do you think Kersh had a heart attack today?" Scully asked.

"Probably, he'll say she's not really my sister and all that mumbo jumbo. We are talking Kersh, you know."

"Yeah." She finished her salad, moving on to her piece of pie.

Mulder had already scarfed his burger down, and was working on his fries. He smiled at Scully for a moment.

Scully caught it, and knew he was planning something.

What she did not know, she feared that it would be bad. With Mulder you had to expect the worst and hope for the best.

"Just spit what ever it is out, Mulder," Scully said, sighing.

Mulder took the box, opened it, removing a ring. He sunk down onto one knee. "This is to make up for the other proposal. Dana Katherine Scully, will you marry me?"

Scully said, "Of course I will. Now will you get up off that floor, you look foolish."

"They say only fools fall in love, Scully," Mulder said, his sardonic grin on.

Scully laughed. "So they do, and if I'm a fool, well, then the rest of the world can just go straight to hell."

"My, my Scully."

"So, Mulder, have you thought of a best man?"

"No. Too many choices to decide from. You have a matron of honor in mind?"

"I figured as much."

"You'll have to help me pick my best man," Mulder said, kissing her after he got up of his knees. They cracked, and he laughed over her mouth, "I'm getting old."

"Old love is the best love. I'm sure you'll have to get back to the office before Doggett puts an APB out on you."

"I left a note. I'm a good boy."

"Sure you are, now scoot. I have to clean this mess up, and check up on Little John."

"As you wish."

Samantha was leaving the building. She spotted Cancer Man near the elevator. Obviously the old man wasn't up to any good whatsoever. [Was he ever?] She followed him.

Cancer Man walked into the hallway leading towards Mulder's office. She sighed. [What was he up to now?] Cancer Man picked the lock, entering the office. He found the note lying on Doggett's desk, telling Doggett where Mulder was at. He picked it up, lighting it on fire, using the sheet of paper to light his cigarette.

Samantha wondered what he hoped to accomplish by that.

She observed him walk up to the filing cabinet, searching for a file. When he found what he was looking for, he smiled. It was the file on her. He was going to read up on her disappearance.

Cancer Man turned around, dropping the file. "Where did you come from, Miss Mulder?" he asked it calmly.

"I followed you down here. You do realize that the file at your feet won't provide much for you, don't you?"

"Exactly how do you know this?"

"I've read it. Most of it's about calling a search, calling off the search, and a few things Fox put in there himself. You won't possibly find what you are looking for in that."

"What am I exactly looking for?"

"Oh come on, William. You're looking for a way to test humans better. A way that gets more people like me.

Don't be foolish. I don't even have to read your mind to know that."

"I see. You do realize though those tests will save human kind."

"How? You're just speeding up what they are trying to do. Not only that, but you are killing off innocents to learn nothing."

"Maybe so, but the more humans tested, the more we learn, the more likely we'll learn the secret to survive."

"For you maybe, but I don't see much surviving for the rest of the world. You're trying to find the key to your personal survival. I know that you started out wanting to help humankind, but the lust for more and more power took over. The only way to survive is to Resist."

"Resist or Die, in other words," Cancer Man chortled. "That won't get you very far."

"You don't know any of my connections out side of this Division. How do you know what can be accomplished?"

Samantha said, tilting her head.

"You are a mystery, yes. Krycek will unlock those secrets for me."

"I'm sure he'll try, but he won't, even if he gets a hold of my diary. Oh, I know you want that, Krycek told you about it, I'm sure."

"Yes, yes he did. What is in those pages could benefit the Project very much." He blew smoke out of his mouth, then inhaled again.

"You do realize that you probably do have cancer."

"I've known for some time. I have it under control. I assure you."

"I'm sure you do. You will die if you don't learn the secrets of the Black Oil and how They use it, is that it?"

"Perhaps. Perhaps we can make a deal with each other.

I allow you to live on your own with no intervention in your Resistance, and you, you give me the secrets of what your body and mind holds."

[Make a deal with the devil. Play Judas? Don't take me for a fool. Find someone else, but you can forget ever using me. Enough people and beings have used me.] "So be it. I will retaliate then. You are a threat to the Project, and you might subvert it."

[Fine, but I'll be ready. You forget who you are dealing with.] She disappeared in front of him.

Cancer Man laughed for a moment. Then he exited the office. Shortly after, Doggett entered.

Doggett walked in, a file in his hand. He was unaware of what was going on around him. He went to his desk, sitting down, still reading the file.

He didn't realize that he was being watched. If he had, he might have been aware of the extreme danger he was in. Someone there was trying to kill him. He hadn't the faintest idea that someone was present.

The file was engrossing, and he read, as if nothing was worth being bothered about in the office. He didn't even notice that Mulder was not present. He was perplexed by the case before him that had been faxed to him by the Gunmen.

He closed his eyes for a moment, reopening them to read the file again. It talked about the tests that were done on both the AHH, and the ones left to die.

He read the horrifying accounts that the Gunmen had gathered from the MUFON group.

As he read, the person bided his time, wanting Doggett as calm as they could make him. The more comfortable he was, the less likely he would be able to defend himself. His gun had been deposited onto his desk.

Doggett didn't even notice when his gun slid out of its holster. The action was done so perfectly and with so much stealth that only trained persons would notice, and if they were alert. Doggett was not paying attention.

The cold metal was being held by a glove. The person wanted to make it look as if he had blown his brains out in exasperation, that Doggett himself had pulled the actual trigger, wanting to commit suicide. If they could pull it off, they would be rewarded well.

Doggett stayed with the file, grabbing his coffee, never lifting his eyes from the contents inside. He wouldn't expect what was to happen next, and his assassinator smiled at how pleasing and easy this would be.

Doggett finally looked up when a gun shot fired.

It shot into the ceiling, Doggett grabbing for his gun. He found that the person had the gun. Both Mulder and Samantha had tackled the guy.

"Sam? Mulduh?" Doggett asked. "What are you doing here, Sam?"

"Saving your life, it would seem."

Mulder had his would be assinator under control. "I told you, I told you Krycek. You double cross me once, and I'll make sure you never do anything for me."

Krycek didn't respond. Samantha screamed, "Fox! That man is ABH!"

It was too late The ABH had gotten out of Mulder's grasp, the gun trained on him. Samantha stepped in front of Mulder, the shot entering the right side of her chest. She fell back onto her brother, gasping.

"SAMANTHA, NO!" Doggett screamed. He took from Mulder's desk the stiletto in an effort to kill the man. He lunged at him, sticking the needle into the back of the man's neck. He hit it just right.

Mulder felt as if time had slowed down for the moment.

He held his sister in his lap, blood puddling under neath them. Samantha said, "I'll be fine. The bullet must be removed, I'll be fine. John, get away from me!

Doggett had been approaching her, to see how bad the damage was. He stopped, hurt on his face. "It's not because I don't want you around, it's because you'll die from my blood. I'm not human remember?"

Mulder shouted, "Call Scully! Call her!" Samantha had fallen slack in Mulder's arms. He started crying. "No, no, I didn't just lose you again. I can never lose you again. God, don't do this."

"Scully, we have a problem. An ABH shot Sam! In the office. It's my fault. It was my gun. Just get down here with medics. I don't want anything foolish." He hung up, sitting down at his desk, far away from her.

He looked over, to see her face pale. The blood had run from her face and death circles appeared under her eyes.

"He killed my sister! That Alien SOB killed my sister!" Mulder wailed.

Doggett said, "No. I did. If I would have been payin' attention, my service weapon would have been at my belt and not on my desk. It's my fault if she dies."

Samantha was still alive, the Black Oil in her repairing the damage done to her. If the bullet wasn't removed soon, she would die.

Later on that day, Doggett sat in the hospital room where Samantha lay unconscious. He stood facing the window, guilt washing over him. If he had been paying attention, Samantha wouldn't be lying in the bed she was in now, in serious condition.

Scully walked behind him. She noticed that his arms were crossed, and that he stood stiff. She walked up to him, placing a hand onto his shoulder. "It's not your fault."

"Yes it is. I took my gun and placed it on my desk.

Then I didn't pay attention to what could be going on around me. If I would have been paying attention my gun wouldn't have shot her and possibly still kill her."

"John, listen to me. You have to know that this is not your fault. You couldn't have prevented the ABH's actions."

"My actions could have prevented this."

He turned around to face her. His ice blue eyes filled with grief and guilt. "I killed her."

"She's not dead."

"Not yet. My luck she'll die."

"Oh John." Scully hugged him, knowing that he needed it. Mulder stood in the doorway, looking to his sister.

Samantha was in a semi coma. She had lived through the operation, and was doing okay, but the threat of death still hung over her. Her pregnancy was not in any danger at this point. Mulder saw Doggett crumple into Scully.

He said, "It's not your fault, Doggett. She took it for me."

Doggett started to sob. Scully led him to a chair to sit down in. She kneeled in front of him, taking his hand in hers. "She'll be fine."

"She got shot because of me!" Doggett choked out. "If it wasn't for me, she would have never been shot."

He took his hand out of Scully's, putting his hands on his face. His body was heaving with sighs. Scully looked to Mulder. She looked back, trying to figure out what she could do for him.

"Keep my gun from me. I just might decide to eat a bullet from it by the end of the day if you don't," Doggett said through his hands, in between sobs.

Mulder's eye brows shot up. He mouthed to Scully, 'We got a problem.' Scully nodded. 'suicide watch is needed.' Mulder nodded. He called Skinner and The Gunmen. "Sir, meet us at the hospital. Yeah, Sam was shot. Just get down here."

He dialed The Gunmen. "Get to the hospital. Now."

Skinner rushed in. "What happened here?"

Doggett couldn't speak any longer, Scully supported him, holding him as he sobbed. Skinner looked over to Samantha. He asked Mulder in a quiet voice, "What happened, how did she get shot?"

"An ABH made an appearance at the office. He was going to kill Doggett. It was with his own weapon that she was shot with. We need suicide watch over him."

"That bad?"

Mulder nodded his head. "He's really really shook up by this turn of events. To get her back and have this happen just might make him kill himself."

"We'll make sure we get people to keep an eye on him.

I'm sure Scully has other things she has to do with Little John. I'll send someone to keep an eye on him here. He won't want to leave her side, I'm sure."

"Thank you, Sir. I don't know what to say." Mulder was still covered in blood, his shirt soaked with it.

Skinner looked at it with concern

"She stepped out in front of me, she was shot at such a close range."

"I see," Skinner said.

The Gunmen came into the room. They were all hushed about the scene in front of them. Frohike asked, "Are they going to be okay?"

"We don't know. He's shaken pretty badly, and Samantha, they don't know how the bullet didn't puncture a lung or go through her into me. She's still not out of the woods yet, though. It's going to be difficult."

Frohike looked over, seeing Doggett's pain. "He on suicide watch?"

"Yeah. I'm going to go and order those men now," Skinner said.

"He threatened to shoot himself just before Skinner got here."

"Oh man," Langly said. "He's taking this really really hard."

Byers said, "I hope things get better."

"As long as Sam lives, I think he'll be fine then. If she dies... he will die too. He's blaming himself for this whole thing. He feels so responsible for the whole incident."

Skinner came back. "Those agents are on their way.

They are going to talk to him and see if they can keep him from killing himself until Samantha wakes up.

Samantha will be able to help him once she wakes."

Mulder nodded. "Thanks."

"Make sure he stays alive. Samantha wouldn't hold up well if she was to wake and told that he was dead. I have a funny feeling that he was going to end up dead if it wasn't for the two of you. Something is very suspicious here," Skinner said.

"Cancer Man! He's probably out to get her, because he can't get her answers from her. He wants to systematically destroy what little she has to make her give in. She's choosing to Resist or Die," Mulder said.

Frohike said, "You mean that man wants to use her only love against herself. If I could do something, I'd destroy him."

"Wouldn't we all. I'm going to get a hold of him and I'm going to tell him off. He really needs it," Mulder said.

"No. Don't do that. So what if it is him. You'll only get something or someone killed. Don't go chasing after him," Skinner said.

"Fine. But I'll make him pay somehow," Mulder said through gritted teeth, seeing his sister's pale face, and Doggett's anguished form.

Part Three: New Experiences

"John?" Samantha asked groggy.

Doggett woke up with a start, getting up off the cot he was lying on. The nurses had insisted that if he stay he sleep on the cot. He looked at her with guilt ridden eyes. He sunk down to his knees at her bedside, "I'm so sorry."

"Sorry for what?" Samantha asked.

"For being so reckless. I almost got you killed."

"I'm fine. I was always going to be fine. I know how to take a bullet. The ABH's are going to be in a lot of trouble. It's all for the Resistance."

"You almost died. My weapon was the firearm used. Oh God, I could have lost you."

"You didn't. It's not your fault. In fact that ABH without your gun would have stuck you with a stiletto.

It is his usual weapon. He just opted to make it look like suicide. I saw him enter the office after you. I was going to remain cloaked, but Fox distracted me for a moment, and I materialized. It's okay now. How's the baby?"

"They said the baby should be fine. Don't ever do that again, Sam," Doggett whispered, his head down, his hand holding hers. He was filled with so much guilt.

"I'm here. John, you have to know that I wouldn't have died. If I would have, man oh man they would have to revamp their whole colonization," Samantha said.

"When you were shot I almost wanted to grab the gun away from him and shoot myself. I wanted to yesterday too, I almost did. If your brother and Scully hadn't gotten someone to keep an eye on me..."

"Oh John, I would have been devastated by that. I love you too much to want to see you blow yourself away foolishly. Don't think that again."

Doggett smiled for the first time since it happened.

Samantha smiled back. "That's it. Smile."

He kissed her then, just as Mulder and Scully walked in. Mulder said, "It's good to see you awake, sis."

"Well it's good to be back among the living I must say. I really don't want to go to the other side just yet," Samantha said with a smile.

"I bet. Don't look forward to playing harps do you?"

Mulder quipped at her.

"Fox, don't be silly."

"I'm always silly, that's my job," Mulder said.

"You're exasperating more like it, Mulder," Scully said.

"Hey, hey no fair! You both can't attack at the same time."

Scully walked over to Samantha holding Little John.

"He wanted to see his aunt Samantha."

"Oh, you brought Little John with you. He looks so cute," Scully said, "He's been grumpy more like it. Do you know when they are releasing you?"

"Soon, because that wound will be almost healed. Black Oil does that to you, you know," Samantha said with a smile. "It does have its advantages after all."

Scully smiled. "John, you'll have to talk to Mulder about something in a bit. I'm sure it's very very important. Right, Mulder?"

"Yes, yes, it's very important," Mulder said after Scully nudged him in the side.

Doggett looked over to Mulder, arms crossed and his eye brows raised.

"Why don't we step out into the hall for a moment?"

Mulder said, indicating the motion with his head.

Doggett complied, walking out into the hall. "What is this about, Mulduh?"

"Scully wants me to choose a best man for the wedding and I finally came to the decision that you should be it. Besides, it would be strange having my boss as my best man and if I picked one of the boys, they'd all fight it out for a very long time. So what do you say?"

"Me? Wow, I'm very very flattered. I have something to ask you myself, I guess," Doggett said, rocking on his feet, his hands shoved in his pockets.

"What is it?" Mulder asked, trying to piece it together. He didn't like to read minds unless it was absolutely necessary.

"Sam, I want to ask her to marry me but I don't know how you'll handle that," Doggett said.

"What's there to handle? I saw this coming when she moved in with you and was declared pregnant. Go ahead, marry my sister. She deserves it and so do you. Don't be silly. If I had to ask Scully's brother, I'd probably would have end up shot."

Doggett laughed. "I see what you mean. I haven't met Bill Scully yet but from what I hear he's a real pain in the behind. I don't think I'll like him much."

"That's the spirit. I don't know where he came from, Scully's mother is so sweet and Melissa was a very very compassionate person," Mulder said.

"There's always one in every family. In mine we have my grandmother on my pa's side. She's a real treat," Doggett said with a laugh.

"Yep. Mine, my father obviously. But then again, my whole family is sort of messed up, don't you think?"

"Nah. Only if you want to go on profiles and first impressions. We better get back in there before Little John becomes stuck listenin' to women's talk."

Mulder laughed, clapping Doggett on the back. "Yeah."

A doctor came in a bit later to check up on Samantha's wound. She said, "May I see the patient?"

Doggett took a step back to let the doctor do her job.

Mulder, Scully, and Little John had gone home. Doggett wished they could do the same but guilt struck him again as he realized that they wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him.

"John, don't go blaming yourself all over again." Sam said, as she sat still for the doctor. She didn't even wince when the IV was pulled from her hand.

The doctor said shocked, "Miss Mulder, you're wound is completely healed. I don't know how to explain it, but your gun shot wound is healed."

"It's a long story and I don't think you want to hear it. Am I free to leave this barbaric place?" Samantha asked.

"I suppose so. I don't see why not. You recovered faster than anyone could from a gun shot wound," the doctor said.

Doggett smiled at Samantha. After the doctor left, Doggett helped Samantha get ready to leave the hospital. He said, "I'm glad you get to leave this place. I'm not fond of hospitals myself."

"I noticed."

"Nurses just might never know if you were alive or not down here."

"I agree," Samantha said. She was dressed now. "Let's go home."

Doggett nodded his head vehemently about that plan.

"What do ya wanna do when we get there?"

"Hmm, I'm sick of hospital food. Let's cook a good dinner," Samantha said.

"Sounds good to me," Doggett said, his arm going around her small form. They walked out to his car, Doggett driving them home. Samantha turned on the radio, the song Ruby Tuesday. She smiled.

Doggett didn't attempt to sing along this time.

Samantha said, "Go ahead, sing along. It's not like you're going to garble the language any more than he does."

Doggett smiled. "Nah, just don't have the voice to sing that tune. Its got too much melody for my voice."

"I see. Mind if I sing then?" Samantha asked.

"Go right ahead. You sing better than me anyway."

Doggett smiled at her.

She sung along with the song. Doggett thought her voice sounded nice, wondering when her birthday was off in his mind. He knew what he would get her for her birthday. If her birthday wasn't coming up, he'd just buy it for her now.

Doggett said, "Do you think you'll be safe for a bit while I go and grab something?"

"Why do you ask?" Samantha looked up into his face by the stove.

"I just need to grab something real quick is all and I want to make sure you'll be safe," Doggett said, giving her a quick kiss.

"I'll be fine. You go and get whatever you're going to go and get."

"I'll be back shortly," Doggett said with a smile.

He went out to his car, starting it up to drive to the local music store. He wanted to make up the whole thing to her. Her abduction, her getting shot to protect him and Mulder. He wanted to get her something she'd love very much

When he got in to the shop. He asked, "What's the best way to get the song Ruby Tuesday?"

"Try a few of these albums." The man pointed to a few albums. Between the Buttons, Hot Rocks and a few others were present. Doggett thought for a moment before asking for the one he wanted.

He said, "May I have Hot Rocks?"

"Sure." The man grabbed the double disk set for him.

Doggett paid for it. He left to buy something much more expensive.

The jewelry story wasn't too far away. He went inside.

"Can I see your best rings for engagement?"

The man looked up at him. "These right here."

"How much more is it to get one engraved?"

"Not too much more. A couple hundred at the most.

Depends on what you want your message to say and how long it is."

"Alright. I would like that one with the diamond set in the middle there."

"Fine choice. A lucky lady going to wear this?" the man asked.

"A very very lucky lady," Doggett said with a smile.

He asked, "How long does it take you to engrave a ring?"

"How fast do you need it?"

"20 minutes easy," Doggett said.

"Oh, a last minute man, are you?"

"You can say that," Doggett said.

"I'll see what I can do. What's the message you want engraved on the inside?"

"Yesterday don't matter if it's gone, let's live like there is no tomorrow. Love John," Doggett replied.

"Alright, then. I should be able to get that for you quickly. I hope your girl likes it," the man said with a smile.

"I hope so too. I told her I'd be out for a moment and I fear I'm already late," Doggett said.

"Just let me get this done and you'll be free to go."

The man disappeared into the back room. Doggett knew a bit about the Stones, but wasn't familiar with them.

He only remembered that line from the song when Samantha had sung along.

When he got home, Samantha had made the dining room look very appealing. She had lit a couple of candles.

When he entered the house, she said, "That took a bit of time."

"Yeah. But it was worth it. I got you somethin'," he said, turning to look at her.

"Oh?" She set down the dish she had in her hands. She walked over to him, seeing the smile on his face.

He said, "I hope you like it."

"Let me see what you got me, John."

Doggett pulled from behind his back the Stones album.

She said, "You got that for me?"

"Yeah. Knew you liked that one song so I thought I'd get you an album."

She kissed him. "Thank you very very much, John. I love it very very much."

She sat it down, walking to sit down at the table.

Doggett followed her. She asked, "Aren't you going to go and sit down?"

He took out the ring, getting down on one knee. He asked, "Samantha Mulduh, will you marry me?"

"John, of course I will. Do get up, your food will get cold."

Doggett laughed, giving her a kiss, slipping the ring on her finger. He got up smiling at her.

She said, "You asked my brother didn't you?"

"Yeah. Why?"

"You're such the gentleman."

"Must be where I grew up."

"Obviously. Let's eat, I'm hungry."

He smiled at the dinner she had made. Suddenly life was so much better. She had made a spaghetti dinner while he had been out shopping. It smelt delicious.

Doggett asked, "You know when your brother's wedding is?"

"Dana said she was pushing for next month. The sooner the better she said."

"Yeah, I agree with her there," Doggett said.

"You the best man? Dana mentioned something about that." Samantha asked him across the table.

"Yeah. I agreed with him to be the best man. I think it'll break the Gunmen's hearts, but your brother is right. Those three would bicker him into the ground into choosing all three of them."

Samantha laughed. "That they would."

Krycek meanwhile was trying to live up to what he had promised Mulder. He knew that if he messed up and back stabbed once, John Doggett just might kill him. He had heard about the incident that had happened earlier that week. Some how he felt very set up.

He was spying on Cancer Man when he heard what was being planned. Cancer Man's next move was to send another ABH in to abduct not only Doggett but to abduct Little John, nailing a lot of people. With John Doggett abducted by the aliens, Samantha Mulder would be at a major disadvantage.

Krycek didn't know how he should bring up the information to Mulder, without Mulder threatening to shoot him. He knew that if it came out later that he knew about this, Mulder would fry him for sure. He didn't want that to happen.

He made his way to Mulder's place. Why not give it a shot, besides Mulder probably would be able to tell if he was lying or not. He hoped that he wasn't too late for something to be done about this whole affair.

Mulder opened the door very surprised to see Krycek standing on the other side. "What are you doing here?"

He gritted his teeth together.

"We don't have much time, Mulder. Cancer Man is going to attack Doggett. He's going to have an ABH abduct him and your boy. I overheard him speaking. I think he set me up when that ABH impersonated me. He knows that I double crossed him. If we don't get Doggett to a safe place, he may be abducted with in the hour," Mulder said, "Come in. Scully has Little John in his room. I'll call over to Doggett's place. We'll see what we can do. I'm glad you came forward with this."

Krycek walked in to the house warily. He didn't expect Mulder to accept his explanation so quickly. He looked around the house, noticing Mulder's couch from his old apartment. He couldn't help but smile. It quickly faded.

Mulder came back. His face was ashen. "We're too late.

That ABH showed up already. Samantha told me that they refused to take her instead. She says that they are on their way to take my son."

"Mulder, I'm so sorry. I can't believe that this happened. I was a step ahead, a whole step ahead!"

"Take my boy to the Gunmen. Tell them I sent you. We have to hide him at all costs. I'm going to get my sister from his place. I'm sure the ABH would leave the best test subject alone. Run. Tell Scully for me."

"I'll try." Krycek said. He went upstairs to see Scully holding her baby. He said, "Mulder told me to take the baby to the Gunmen. Don't ask questions. We don't have time. The ABH abducted Doggett. Your son is next."

"How do I know for sure?" Scully asked, defenses kicking in.

"Mulder said to. I have to protect your son. It's your only chance. If you want to believe otherwise when the ABH shows up, it's not going to be my fault your child was taken."

"I'll go with you."

"Fine. Let's go." Krycek said. They went out the back door to his car parked behind another house. He snuck Scully and Little John into the back.

Mulder left just as the ABH entered. Mulder had cloaked himself to go to his sister. He was lucky the ABH didn't catch him. Mulder would have made an excellent substitute.

Scully got out of Krycek's car first. She said, "Come on, you're in this now, get over here."

Krycek got out quickly. They ran to the door, Scully shouting, "You open this door or I'll tell the world your secret, Frohike!"

Frohike opened the door immediately. "What's with him?"

"He's saving my baby's life. Let us in. Mulder and Samantha should be here any minute."

"What do you mean?"

Scully led Krycek inside the Lone Gunmen's home. She said, "An ABH was going to abduct my baby. They already have John."

"They abducted Doggett?" Langly asked.

"Yes. Cancer Man sent him to get back at Samantha."

Krycek said. "I tried to prevent it, but I'm too late for one of them," Frohike said, "What do they hope to accomplish by that?"

"Who knows. I'm sure They'll do one of two things.

Either he'll come back as an AHH, or he'll come back terminally ill. I can't tell you which. The determination is made by your own DNA and the level of Black Oil given to you," Scully said, "Samantha must be heart broken by now."

"I would assume she's got her guns blazing." Krycek said. "She gets mad and you're in big time trouble.

Believe me, if there is one person that can and will thwart any plans that Cigarette Smoking SOB has, it's Samantha Mulder," Frohike said, "Wouldn't happen to know by experience, would you, Krycek?"

"Nope, none whatsoever. Any way, she's going to black mail him. I'm sure she has far reaching abilities with the aliens that we don't even know about."

Scully held Little John close to herself. She looked into his eyes, sensing the fear her child had. She rocked him. "Boys, do you have a crib handy by any chance?"

"Sure do. We bought one, knowing that at some point you'd be needing it," Byers said. "These two were against it, but I changed their minds."

Scully smiled. "I'll put Little John down to sleep. I wish Mulder would get her sooner."

Krycek watched Scully walk away with Little John. He didn't know who was worse to piss off, Samantha Mulder or Dana Scully. Either one of them would some how make you pay big time for any offense paid to them.

Samantha Mulder was seething. When Mulder entered the house, she was having a mini tantrum. "That man has messed with the wrong woman! I'm going to make him pay!" She had turned over all the chairs and now was in the process of knocking the sofa over.

Mulder ducked out of the room for a moment. He didn't want to get hit. She was doing things no one should be capable of doing. Mulder spoke up. "Sam, you gonna be okay?"

"Okay? Am I going to be okay?" Samantha nearly screamed at him. "I'll tell you what I'm going to do, I'm going to find that worthless thing who claims to be a man, and I'm going to threaten him with something he won't be able to get away from. That man is going to pay."

"Sam, we must find another way."

"Oh I'll give him another way. Out of my way, Fox. I'm going to handle this in my own way. He wants a power war, he's got it," Samantha said, turning anger red eyes at her brother.

Mulder bowed down. "I'll be at the Gunmen's. You be extra careful."

"I don't think it's me that's going to need to be extra careful." Samantha left. She knew what she had to do.

When she found Cancer Man, she said, "William, you've gone too far this time."

"Oh? Have I?"

"Would you like to know what I'll do to get you abducted or killed?"

"I'm afraid that I hold all of the cards, Samantha."

"Oh really, how can you be so sure?" Samantha said, her eyes blazing.

"My deal is this. You tell me your secrets, and I'll get Agent Doggett back for you."

"Liar. Here's my deal. I don't tell you any secrets, I prevent them from abducting you for threatening the most vital test subject ever, and you return John to me. Clear?"

"What would this move be exactly?" Cancer Man said, taking a drag off his cigarette.

"You wouldn't dare." Cancer Man, said getting worried.

"Would I?" Samantha said. "You don't know what it's like to live my life. All you want is power. I have to deceive people not because I chose the life I lead, you choose what you do to other people. The one man who loved me is gone and you expect me to be okay with this. Excuse me? If I die buddy, everything you need goes with me."

Cancer Man said, "I can't get him back. I asked the ABH about that. He said that as long as tests are needed to be done, they have to keep him there. I'm sorry I can't give you more."

"You fool! You stupid fool! He just might die! Do you ever think about the life you hold in your hands, or are you too busy playing God with the people you mess with?" Samantha shouted at him.

For the first time, Cancer Man felt as if he had done something wrong. He felt that he had done the Project's objectives wrong only for a moment. "It's all for the Project. I only submit myself to its truth."

[You submit yourself to you and you alone. I'm finished with you. I can have you abducted yourself, you know.]

"You couldn't."

[I have power you don't understand. I may be human, but I am a part of Them, too. They support more of Their kind. Since I am the most sought after test subject I can demand almost anything I want.] "All but the return of John Doggett." Cancer Man walked away before she could retaliate. Samantha watched him go. She knew that the man was right. This infuriated her. After her own abduction to have him taken from her was just not thinkable. What was she being punished for this time?

She wanted to destroy whatever had decided that she should be punished for what she had been made into.

She had never chosen to be what she was. Tears started to sneak out of her strong eyes. She knew she had been beat this time, and she had let herself be defeated.

She hoped that John would survive the tests that he was being put through. She couldn't handle him dying and never being loved by him again. He loved her more than anyone she had ever met, including Fox. Fox had moved on to Scully. Fox loved her, but only like a brother, and that was how things should be. She decided to see if Mulder and Scully had arrived safely at the Gunmen's.

When she arrived at the Gunmen's, she threw herself into Mulder's arms, sobbing. She sobbed, "I may never see him again."

Mulder held her close, whispering, "We'll get him back, don't worry, Sam."

"He might get cancer or die or anything! Why? Why did this have to happen?" Samantha felt like dying for a moment. "Why couldn't they take me again? Why am I being punished?"

"You're not being punished. Why do you think that?" Mulder asked stroking her hair.

"Because someone loves me. Because I enjoy being loved. I don't deserve those things." Samantha choked out.

"Of course you do. Cancer Man is just being his evil self. He wants to save only himself by using anyone he can get his hands on. He knew that it would hurt you if Doggett was taken. I'm so sorry."

"It's all my fault!" Samantha wailed.

"No, I wasn't there in time." Krycek finally spoke.

"You? You knew of these plans?" Samantha asked, lifting her head up from her brother's shoulder.

"Yes. I was on my way right after the plans were spoken of, but I was too late. I tried, I really tried. I failed." Krycek said softly. He was sorry that he had tried to hurt Samantha in any way. Her despair was so immense that he didn't know if he could comprehend that pain.

She said, "Thank you for trying. I appreciate it. I really really do. You tried to do something that was good."

"Sam, why don't you get some rest. You can't be just running around all the time, especially in your condition and after your gunshot."

Sam resigned to what her brother ordered. She said, "But where am I going to sleep?"

Byers said, "Take my bed."

"I miss my pjs already." Sam said.

"What are those?" Mulder asked.

"One of John's old shirts. I always sleep in one of them," Samantha said with a bit of smile.

"Do you want me to grab anything else while I'm there?" Mulder asked, sighing.

"My diary and my Stones album that John bought for me just before he was taken. Oh, and that picture of you if you want, though I will probably end up staying at home in a while anyway, so you can leave that there."

"Alright. I'll be right back." Mulder left.

Frohike took Mulder's place. He said, "Hey, we'll get him back. Don't worry. Doggett's a tough man. He'll come back to you."

Samantha smiled. "You're not so bad for a little troll, did you know that?"

Frohike glared at her for a moment before laughing. "I guess I'm not."

Krycek asked, "Where should I go?"

Samantha looked at him. "You've already gotten yourself into the Resistance by your actions. I guess as the leader I get to decide that you stay here, unless there is not enough room. Boys?"

"There's plenty. Looks like we'll be sleeping on the floor for the night," Langly said.

Samantha smiled. "I suppose you'd hate to hear the Stones, Langly."

"Only if I have to hear the Altamont story one more time. Other wise no, not at all," Samantha said, "I wish Fox would hurry." She fingered the ring where Doggett had put it. Scully noticed it, but kept her mouth shut.

John Doggett found himself in hell. He was aware of the Black Oil falling on him, its icy pain gripping to his body. He feared for his life, knowing that he might not survive the procedure. He resisted, by not screaming for awhile, not wanting to give into how they wanted him to react.

He realized that this was what Samantha had vaguely described in her diary. He heard the other victims around him, and he wondered how many of them would survive this. When he thought of this, he began to think of what Samantha must be going through.

Before his humanity was taken from him and when they made him a cold unfeeling person, he remembered her face. He remembered how she looked as he had asked her to marry him. He remembered how she looked when the ABH had come to take him away. She had known that this was why the ABH had shown up.

He couldn't help but scream this time. The smell of burnt flesh, and the feeling of fire made him well aware of where he was. He tried to get away, but the laser had already ripped through his belly. The Black Oil rained down on him, and he could only writhe in immense pain.

He wished deep down that he would only leave this place. He wished that he could leave this hell, that he would wake up finding it all to be a dream that he had from hearing the accounts of abductions in the past. But he knew that this was not so. The pain was real, very very real. He knew that he would have to survive so that Sam wouldn't have to be alone without him. If he would have only done something to prevent her from this pain of knowing where he was.

He felt something prick him in the back of the neck for only a moment. Then his world went completely black, more than it had even before.

Samantha woke the next morning, alone and for the first time afraid in years. Before she always had known that she would be tested upon. She knew that in her day she would not be facing any happiness, but as soon as John hat entered her life, that had changed.

Now she feared that the happiness she had now would soon be gone.

She stretched. She looked at the ring on her finger, tears coming to her eyes. She removed it to read the inside. When she had finished she started to cry all that much more. Scully came in, hearing her sobs.

"Samantha, are you going to be okay?"

"I don't know. I really don't know."

Scully sat down next to Samantha. She took Samantha's small form into her arms. "I know how you feel. When Mulder was abducted last spring and all I had was his child in my womb, I didn't know if I could carry on. I didn't know what to do, but I did eventually pick myself up. It takes time."

Samantha sighed. "I've never had anyone in my entire life care about me the way John does. Fox cares an awful lot, he cares, but its not the same, you know? I mean, Fox and I share a love that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world, but what I have with John is different."

"I know what you mean. I spent a lot of my time after Mulder was taken looking for him in ways that I thought might find him. I tried to think like him, tried so many different approaches to find him, but none of them worked. I don't know if its a good think that you do know where John is, and that he'll come back, or if its better for you not to know, like I had," Scully said, softly. She held Samantha, stroking the woman's hair.

"I can't tell you that either. It does comfort me that he will come back, but I fear what they will do to him. I hope and pray that his body is strong enough to handle the Black Oil. Is Alex still here?"

"Krycek? I don't know. I came to see if you were awake, and I didn't even check that out. Do you want to talk to him?"

"Yes. He might know something that might help, even if a little. I hope so at least."

"I see. Congratulations by the way on your engagement," Scully said, smiling.

"Yeah. John asked me right before the ABH had shown up. Ironic, isn't it?" Samantha said.

"Yeah. I suppose so. I'll be right back with Krycek."

"You wanted to see me?" Krycek asked.

"Yeah. I wanted to thank you for trying," Samantha said. Krycek looked lost. "Don't look so lost. You did something to help someone else. It's what gets us all by. I know you're afraid of what will happen to you. I can't promise you protection. If I could, John would still be here, and we wouldn't probably be having this conversation."

"How am I going to be safe from Cancer Man? He will retaliate against me. While I know that I can defend myself, I'd rather avoid it."

"Hmm, it's a little risky, but you could live at John and my place till he get's back. Besides, it wouldn't be the same at home without someone there. You could hide out there long as you like."

"Isn't that dangerous?" Krycek said. He had admitted to himself that he was attracted to her "I'm very very much in love with John. Don't be a goose. Besides, you try anything funny, I always can have Fox kill you?" Samantha said, a smile breaking out across her face. "I'm too much to handle any ways.

Besides, I'm pregnant too. What would you want with a pregnant woman like me?"

"I think Frohike and I should join the same club."

Frohike yelled from the computer area, "I heard that!"

Samantha smiled. "You never know. Someone, somewhere, someday just may love you. I never thought I would have that, but I do now. Aliens aren't very nice, and ABH don't have any kind of parenting skills what so ever."

"I noticed. How did you turn out like you are with all of that in your life anyway?"

"Let's say it's a whole lot of luck. William may think he's won. On some level he has, but I just recruited a new member to the Resistance. I can, if ever needed have him abducted just as he had John abducted. I don't work that way, though. I prefer not to act that way. It takes a lot energy I don't have."

Krycek smiled, knowing that she was right. He said, "I'm surprised that Mulder hasn't tried to kill me just yet."

"He doesn't have any reason right now, does he?" Samantha asked, her eyebrows raised.

"Nope, not that I know of."

Then you're just fine. I do wish that being left behind would get easier. Though being up there is no picnic, let me tell you," Samantha said. "Hey Frohike, breakfast anytime soon?"

"Right now. You better hurry, Langly will eat it before you can eat it."

Samantha stood up, "Shall we?"

Mulder was filing a report on Doggett's abduction. He knew that Kersh would be wondering what was going on since Doggett wouldn't be coming into work.

Kersh had called Mulder up to his office to give his official report on the matter to him. Mulder loathed the idea that he would have to talk to Kersh about this.

"Agent Mulder, where exactly is Agent Doggett?"

"I can't give you that exact answer."

"What do you mean, Agent Mulder?" Kersh demanded.

"What I mean is that he went where I was for the past few months before my return."

"I should have expected you to use the alien defense, Agent Mulder. Now, tell me where he is."

"I believe I can help you with that." Samantha stepped from the shadows. "When I heard that you were calling my brother in today to discuss John's disappearance, I could only cringe. He's where no man or woman should ever be. If you want to disbelieve, go right ahead.

You can't take 28 years of hell from me. You can't take those memories from me, though I pray someone would."

"So, Miss Mulder, if that is who you really are, where is Agent Doggett?"

"In the space craft having tests preformed on him. My scars have healed from the Black Oil in my blood.

Would you like to see my blood?"

"What do you mean?" Kersh was getting ready to throw her out.

"What I mean is, the stuff in my blood is what causes me to do this." She cloaked herself in front of him.

Then she reappeared. "What I mean is you should stop questioning everything brought to you by my brother.

You might want to think about questioning what that old smoking man brings to you. He is up to no good, and you let yourself be used by him. Tsk, tsk."

Kersh stood up. "I believe you should be leaving."

"Don't worry. You just keep Agent Doggett's abduction quiet, and I'll keep you grounded on this planet.

Would you like to know what the aliens are really like by any chance?" Samantha was blackmailing him.

"No not really, though I don't believe in them. I'll keep it quiet for my superior, not you, Miss Mulder."

"My, my. Afraid of something we don't believe in.

Funny how fickle humans can be. Just remember what I said." Samantha smiled. "Fox, let's go."

Part Four: The Lantern

One month later...

Samantha sat at home, watching television. She was waiting impatiently for Mulder and Scully to come over for dinner. They made it a habit for at least twice a week to eat at her place, and the rest of the week at theirs.

Now that she could watch television, it bored her rather quickly. She did enjoy Friends, but only because she remembered watching it with John. She sighed as the knock came to the door.

Scully came in, hugging her. "How you holding up today, Sam?"

"I just wish things would get easier. What did you bring?" Samantha asked.

"I made a couple of pies for dessert. Mulder protested, but I finagled him into letting me bake them. The catch, he didn't do anything."

"Fox, you should help out more often!" Samantha said.

"I brought friends instead, sis," Mulder said, smiling.

Krycek and the Gunmen stood behind Mulder. "Hey Pretty Lady!" Frohike said from behind Mulder.

"Frohike, when are you going to learn?" Samantha said, laughing.

"I don't know."

The group moved through the door, with Samantha closing it behind them all. She said, "I made some lasagna. I didn't know who was all coming, so I made a big meal, the biggest meal I could find."

"It's not a problem, Sam," Mulder said, smiling. Samantha asked, "Dana, would you mind helping me in the kitchen?"

"Not at all." Scully walked with Samantha to the kitchen. "Mulder, keep an eye on Little John. Don't let Frohike corrupt our boy."

Little John had grown a lot since Doggett's abduction.

He was crawling now, and everything in arms reach went straight into his mouth. He was now sitting on Mulder's lap. Samantha asked Scully in the kitchen, "Do you think they've killed John?"

"Oh Samantha, don't give up hope. He'll come home to you. You have to believe that. I know it's so very very difficult." Scully hugged her for a moment.

"It's been so long. I don't know how long I've been gone when I'm up there. I've never been on this end of an abduction. It's been such an awful long time," Samantha said. She removed the lasagna from the oven.

Scully watched her walk into the dining room, pouring glasses of milk for everyone. She sighed. This past month had been very very difficult for everyone.

The Lone Gunmen were having an argument, "Listen, I get to sit here. You sit there. Why do we go through with this every week?" Frohike said to Langly.

"Maybe because it's reversed, dummy." Langly retorted back.

Krycek sat next to Mulder watching the fight. He felt uncomfortable still about being accepted as a member.

He rolled his eyes as the fight progressed. He would never figure out how they did anything.

Mulder said, "Boys, boys, just sit down. Who cares where, just sit."

They did as told, but not without grumbling. "I don't see why he always gets to sit next to Samantha."

Frohike complained.

"You never learn, do you?" Mulder sighed.

Scully sat on the other side of Samantha, in between her and Mulder. She said, "Frohike, who cares. It doesn't really matter where any of us sit. Now just be quiet."

Frohike sputtered for a moment. He began to eat in silence.

Samantha hoped that things would be okay. She feared for her baby and for John.

Samantha was doing dishes with Scully in the kitchen.

She sighed. "Dana, do you think that those three will ever grow up?"

"No. Those three grow up, and the world ends," Scully said with a laugh.

"I suppose you are right. I noticed that Alex wasn't very comfortable tonight," Samantha said offhandedly.

"I don't think he's quite sure what he supposed to be doing here yet. He's still trying to transit to the new life, I suppose. It's not that new I guess, but for him I suppose it might be," Scully said, drying a dish.

Samantha nodded. "It's good to see that he meets with us. I was surprised to see him tonight."

"Yeah. He almost didn't come," Scully said.

"I'd guess that," Samantha said. "He looks lost out there."

"I think he doesn't know what to say. He's been against us for so long, and probably still expects Mulder to kill him any second."

"I bet he does. I would too." She put a cup in the cupboard.

"This kitchen makes me miss John so much more," Samantha said, looking forlornly towards Scully.

"Stupid aliens. Just can't leave us Earthlings alone."

Scully cracked a smile at the joke. She stopped when Samantha cried out in pain.

"Samantha, are you okay?"

"The baby! Something is wrong. Oh God."

Scully ran out into the living room. "Mulder, get your sister to the hospital! Something is wrong with her baby."

Mulder ran into the kitchen to see his sister sitting on the floor, crying. She held her belly. He ran to her, helping her up. "Frohike! Help me get her to the car!"

Frohike ran into the kitchen to help. He said, "Krycek, drive us there. We should sit with her to make sure that she is okay."

Krycek jumped up, opening the door. He looked at Scully with guilt ridden eyes. He then disappeared out the door to the car to drive to the hospital. They all hoped that things would be okay.

Mulder watched the doctors wheel his sister away. He was afraid that something had gone very very wrong. He stood off by himself, staring into the distance. [Why does she have to suffer this? Something good please happen.]

Scully sat with Little John. She was trying to calm the child down, but to no avail. He would not sit still. She sighed. He was being finicky again about everything. He kept moving his arms up and down, exasperating his mother.

"Mulder, I'm sure she'll be okay. She just stressed herself out. She shouldn't be doing so much anyway. If anything else, she needs John back," Scully said, trying to reassure Mulder, and keep Little John from falling on his head.

Krycek stood on the opposite end of the waiting room from Mulder. He felt so very out of place. Though he had been accepted into the group, he had moved out of Samantha and Doggett's place within the week. He felt like he was endangering them by being there.

The Gunmen watched Mulder start to pace back and forth. They worried just as much as he had, and though they were crabby they did not argue about anything.

Mulder sighed. He turned to Scully. "Scully, what if it comes out that she can't have this baby? She can't take much more pain."

"I know, I know. She'll be fine. We just have to believe that. I know that things are so difficult for all of us. If we could only get John back, things wouldn't be so difficult," Scully said, holding Little John closer. She knew what it was like to be threatened with losing a baby.

Mulder said, "I don't know what would happen to her if they say she's going to lose the baby. It would devastate her."

As he spoke, a gurney ran past them. A whole team of doctors and nurses were running past with a man.

Mulder froze. He asked, "Who is that man?"

"A John Doe, sir. Let us through." The doctors moved through. Mulder looked down. He saw who it was.

"Um, Scully, you were saying about how things would be easier if Doggett was back?" Mulder indicated the gurney that had just ran past with a tilt of his head.

Scully said, "No, they didn't hurt him that badly, did they?"

"I'll follow it to see if it's him." Krycek offered.

"You better take one of the boys here with you."

Frohike stood up, "Let's go. I need to stretch my legs any ways."

Frohike and Krycek went to follow the gurney. They wanted to check and see if it was Doggett.

Frohike was trailing behind Krycek. He shouted, "Hey, let me keep up!"

Krycek looked back, a devious smile on his face.

"Sorry. I can't help going that fast."

They stopped where the gurney had, looking through the window to see the man inside. Frohike asked, "Is it him?"

"I'm afraid so. He doesn't look very good." Krycek sighed.

"I'll go and tell them," Frohike said.

Krycek watched the doctors. They were giving him life support, and blood. He saw the bruises on Doggett from where he was. The tests were horrible to him, he noticed.

Mulder came up behind him. "How is he?"

"Take a look for yourself." Krycek said, backing up.

Mulder looked through. "Those damn aliens. They have to screw everyone over, don't they?"

He turned around. "I got to tell Sam that he's back.

Do you think you could see if he's going to be okay.

I'll be down in a moment. The baby needs to be checked out, but they have stabilized Sam's pain," Mulder said.

Mulder left to tell Samantha. She lay in her bed, looking very tired. He walked up to her bedside. "Sam, they found him. He's in a hospital room down the hall.

They are working on him right now."

Samantha began to cry. "How bad is he?"

"I was just going to find out. Oh Sam, he'll be okay.

Things will be fine," Mulder said, giving her a quick kiss on the forehead.

Mulder went back down the hall. He asked, "Are they almost done working on him?"

"Yeah. You should be able to identify him to them any moment." Krycek said.

"Alright." Mulder sighed. "Sam is going to be fine.

Now we have to worry about both of them."

A doctor came out to see Mulder and Krycek standing in the hall. Mulder drew his badge. "I have the identity of the man in that room."

"OK. Who is he, sir?" The doctor asked.

"He is an F.B.I. Agent named John Doggett," Mulder said.

"Who are his contacts?"

"I am, my fiancee, and his fiancee, who is already admitted to the hospital for complications in her pregnancy," Mulder replied.

"Ok. We're going to be moving him to a room very soon.

He should be fine, but we want to run as many tests on him that we can to make sure he is going to be fine." Mulder asked, "Do you know how bad the damage is?"

"It's fairly serious, but he should wake in the next few days. Other than that, it might be hard to tell.

He hasn't been fed in awhile. He did have water though, so he's not too dehydrated, but we will be hydrating him anyway," the doctor said. "If you'll excuse me, sir."

Mulder watched the doctor leave. He said, "Krycek, will you call Skinner. If I can't stay here with him, will you and Skin Man? I want to tell Sam about his condition."

"I will, Mulder. You just go."

Mulder nodded his thanks. He walked down the hall to overhear his sister and Scully talking.

"Dana, he might not be an AHH. He might be ill. I want to see him. I'll know the minute I see him which one he is. If he's sick, I don't know what I'll do."

Samantha cried.

Scully held her. "Samantha, he might be hurt, and if he is sick we'll deal with it. We'll do something for him."

"If he is like Steve we'll never be able to help him."

Sam sobbed. "I can't lose him. I almost lost the baby.

I can't lose him, I just can't!"

"I know, I know. He's strong. No matter what the two of you together are strong enough to handle anything thrown at you. Believe me, he'll pull through," Scully said.

"I wish I could see him." Sam fell silent. She was crying now.

Mulder stepped into the room. "Scully, Krycek is calling Skin Man to sit with him," Scully said, "Thanks, Mulder. What did the doctors say?"

"They said that they want to run some tests to see what is wrong and what isn't. They said he's malnourished, that he just needs rest, and that he'll wake up in a few days maybe."

"That's good news."

"How long are you going to be here, Sam?"

"A few days they said. They want to see if the baby is going to be alright. Oh Fox, today has been so difficult. Please tell me if you hear anything new."

"I will, sis."

A few days later, Doggett woke. He looked around the hospital room he was lying in. Samantha ran to him when he awoke. She then started to cry. "No, no, it's not true."

"What's the matter? I'm sittin' here, ain't I?"

"You were chosen to be left to die." Samantha cried.

"How do ya know?"

"I can tell by looking at you. It's a trick that the AHH's are given. Oh John, I can't lose you a second time."

"I'm not goin' to die on you," Doggett said. He took her hand into his. "How is the little one?"

"My pregnancy had some complications. Oh John, I can't do this."

"Sam, your stronger than anyone I know. You can, you can. Oh Sam, if I do have a disease, I'm sure we'll find a way to fight it," Doggett said.

He smiled at her, and Samantha felt that the world was so much brighter. "I missed you so much."

"Come 'ere. I want to hold you. I spent my whole time in that hell wishin' that I could," Doggett said.

She climbed into the bed with him. He held her close, kissing her head. "I missed you so much."

"You already said that."

"I know, but I just felt like saying it again," Samantha said.

He smiled. "We'll take whatever is thrown at us. You know that."

"Yeah." Samantha smiled. She sat up, kissing him.

"I've wanted to do that for a very long time."

"Me too. When I finally bust out of here, we're going to have a lot of fun, you hear? I want to live a bit," Doggett said.

Samantha smiled back. She looked up to see her brother standing in the doorway. "Fox."

Mulder smiled. "Hey Dogg Man!"

"Hey Mulduh, how you been doin'?"

"I've been better. This past month has been difficult.

I must say that we wondered if we'd ever see you again. It's good to see you, it'll be better to see you out and about, though."

"Yeah, I agree with you there," Doggett said.

"You're not going to believe this," Mulder said. "On the night that you were abducted, Krycek saved Little John. He was too late to save you."

"Alex Krycek? What ever for?" Doggett asked.

"Because he is a member of the Resistance now," Samantha said.

"He is? Wow, leave for a month and everything changes."

"Not everything, John. Don't be silly."

"Don't you like me silly?" Doggett asked, laughing.

A doctor came into the room just as Samantha moved off of the bed. He said, "Agent Doggett, we have disturbing news for you."

"Don't sugar coat it. Give it to me straight," Doggett said.

"You have cancer in your stomach area, and you have cancer in your sinus cavity. We believe that with treatment we can control and possibly cure the problem, but chances are very very low that they will work."

Doggett looked ashen for a moment. "That serious, huh? So basically I have six months or so to live."

"I'd guess around there," the doctor said. "I'm so sorry to have to tell you this. It is very frightening to go through something like this."

The doctor left. Samantha started to cry. She said, "I told you that you were marked to die. Oh John, I can't do this. Six months? Only about that?"

"Sam, I'm sure we'll figure something out." Doggett was choking up a bit himself. He said, "We've beaten everythin' else. We'll beat this."

Sam looked at Mulder for a moment. "Fox, I want to talk to you later. I want to be alone with John for now."

Mulder nodded. He said, "If you need me, I'll be with Scully, Krycek, and the boys."

Samantha sobbed. "They take everything away from me.

If you had been smart you would have walked away, and you wouldn't be dealing with all of this."

"Sam, you can't blame yourself for this. Come here."

Doggett opened his arms. He had stood up from his bed.

"Something will come to us in time."

"For you?"

"For me, and when we find this cure, we can heal some body else, and so forth. Sam, don't give up hope. If you gave up hope, you wouldn't be my girl. You hold your head up high and don't let this get you down now."

Samantha looked into his eyes. She found strength in his. She hugged him.

"Now, I think I'm going to need someone holdin' me up for a while. I'm facing death, and for the first time, I'm afraid," Doggett said, honestly.

"I'll find a way. I love you. I really do," Samantha said.

"I love you, too. I wish things would be better right away, but we can't just get that. I suppose I'll be here an awful lot. I hate hospitals." Doggett whined for a moment.

Six months to live. What would he do in six months? What things would he accomplish? He stared out into the darkness of his room, noticing that darkness had filled him as well. He felt as if a death sentence had been placed upon him, and in so many ways it had been.

This one couldn't be pardoned by a president, or reprieved to be reviewed by any governor. He was going to die, the finality of the truth sinking in.

He thought about Samantha's face when she had learned of the illnesses inflicting his body. She was so ashen and upset. She was scared too. He felt his own fear rise in himself. Death came with his job, but not this slow killing pain. Not with a length of time given. He felt tears in his eyes.

Anger took over his body as he thought about it. Why did this have to happen to him? What did he do to anyone? He didn't understand why he was being inflicted with these cancers. It angered him that Samantha found happiness with him, only for it to be taken from her so quickly.

He only wanted things to be easier, that love would prevail and that things would grow easier. The thing that really upset him was that he didn't feel sick.

Sure he was sore, but he didn't feel anything more than that. He was confused that he would be so ill and yet not feel anything about it.

He was sure Samantha was suffering without him at home. He was sure that she was blaming herself for what was happening to him. He knew her too well. She could read his mind, but he could read her heart. He understood that she would take full responsibility for what had befallen him.

He remembered vague things that had happened during the tests, and agony washed over him. The pain of the last month was too much to bear. He started to cry softly, not wanting to attract attention, for himself and for her.

We, on our present life, Knew that the stars were right.

That if you are the first to go, You'll leave a sign to let me know, Tell me so.

Please, carry the Lantern lights.

(Jagger, Richards)

The next morning, Mulder, Scully, Samantha went to visit Doggett. When they arrived to see him, he was asleep in his bed. He looked peaceful. Mulder whispered to his sister, "I can't bear to wake him."

Samantha looked very tired. She hadn't slept well the night before. She half smiled at him, before looking almost hollow. She was taking Doggett's illness very very hard. She noticed something about his chip. It was a new wave she was sure. He wouldn't be saved by it, it would kill him removed or left in. Much like Steve, Doggett had a permanent death sentence placed upon him.

She looked back to her brother. She said, "Fox, I want to sit with him. Any of you are welcome to sit with me."

"I'll sit with you." Scully offered.

Samantha said, "Thank you. I think I might need it."

They walked into the room, quietly so as not to wake him. They sat down in the uncomfortable chairs. Scully took Samantha's hand in hers. She whispered, "Where there is a will, there is a way."

Samantha nodded. Mulder stood behind the chairs. He had one hand on his sister's shoulder. He sighed. Last night he had helped Scully console Samantha.

The Gunmen had taken Little John for the night. Krycek had disappeared. He said something about finding a possible cure. Mulder had given in, letting him do what ever it was he did. He knew by now that Krycek wouldn't be foolish to betray him. If he betrayed Mulder, Krycek would have no protection.

Doggett woke up, seeing them all sitting in the room.

He said, "Good morin', everyone. What brings you 'ere so early?"

Samantha said, "I just wanted to come and see you.

John, you have a very very difficult road ahead of you."

"Tell me about it. I can't take much more Jell-O," he said, cracking a smile. He grimaced as a bruise was tender when he moved.

Samantha smiled for a brief moment. Doggett smiled back at her. He said, "I need somethin' to do. It's so dull in here. If I think one more time about what I have, I think I'll scream," Scully said, "You're in for a long haul there, then.

It takes a long time to get used to it, but you will in time. The insufferable china doll treatment is worse."

Doggett nodded. "I bet."

Meanwhile Krycek was running around the clock. He had called the Lone Gunmen from various places that he had been to. He was searching for an answer, on a hunch that he thought might save Doggett's life, not only his, but others like him. He had found all the people willing to cooperate with him, knowing that this might be a dangerous idea, but if it was successful, the benefits would be immense.

Krycek was dead tired. He had been going since the night before, and hadn't slept in two days nearly. He checked into a hotel room, ready to drop. He locked the five locks on the door inside. All hotel rooms out east had this customary number of locks.

Once that had been done, he had stripped down to just pants. He was so tired and wanted to sleep the night away, but felt that a shower might be a better plan first. He let out a sigh. Hopefully this would work.

As he stood under the warm shower spray, he thought of Samantha's pain stricken face the night before. As he looked at her, he saw her light flicker, and then die suddenly. It was so tragic to see her wilt like this after all of her strength.

He dried himself off, dragging his tired form to the single bed he had. Noticing all the healthy romantic relationships around him made him all that more lonely. Back when he had been working with Marita he had someone, but she was almost always willing to shove a knife into his back. If he could only find someone who would love him back.

He fell asleep, letting the sweet peace of sleep take him. He would seek the persons he thought would help him. He hoped that his elaborate theory would pull off. It would crush Samantha and all the others he had gotten hopes up for it this failed.

The next morning dawned. Krycek woke up looking around the room. He sighed. Today he would be talking with some of the people that agreed to try his theory. They would have to decide how they would be doing this as well.

He got up, dressing himself. He didn't even go to the cafeteria for the contenetial breakfast, he would worry about food later. This mission was too important.

When he got to where the people waited for him, he got out. There were five of them. Two of them were AHH's and the rest were all under a death sentence. He greeted them all, noticing one in particular.

She was a little younger than him, but she looked so fragile. Her eyes held a mixed wisdom and innocence, and when she smiled at him, he felt endeared to her.

She said, "My name is Jane. I hear you are trying to find a new way to possibly heal us."

"That I am. I am going to try something that's never been done before. I think it's because no one has ever thought of it." Krycek said, a smile breaking out on his face, despite himself.

She smiled back at him. "The two AHH's are Brian and Kurt. The others behind me are Robert and Laura."

Krycek shook all of their hands. He noticed them looking at his one armedness. It had plagued him before. They just nodded, and it became inessential and unimportant.

"What is your plan?" Jane asked. Her blonde hair shined as she moved her head.

"My plan, let's go somewhere before we start to speak of that. I don't just anyone hearing this plan."

Krycek said.

"I understand. Let's go somewhere that is more private." Jane led the group to a house held by MUFON.

It was deserted for the day, so Jane could meet Alex Krycek. He was in Baltimore now, so the D.C. team got him to meet, otherwise he might have been disregarded.

Jane said when they entered the house, "I hear you work with Samantha Mulder. What is she like?"

"Right now? She feels like she's in a losing battle.

It's a very very long story."

"Oh? Why don't you give us some back ground into what made you contact us," Jane said, putting a pot of coffee on.

"She is losing her fiance to two different cancers. He was just returned to her just recently, and the chip in him won't do a thing for him. I'm trying to find another way to heal not only him, but others." Krycek said.

"I see. How is Mulder by the way? He might remember me from the tests." Jane replied.

"He's busy doing so many things. Being a father, and he's trying to help his sister." Krycek said.

"Alright. So, this plan, would you mind telling it to us?"

"Ok. My plan is this: I get AHH's to donate blood. We try to do a sort of transfusion into a person left to die by Them. If this works like I hope it might, we could save Doggett's life, and many others. It would sure stick a big knife in that Cancer Man's back."

"I see. Do you think that this will work?"

"I sure hope it will. I know it's dangerous, but if we don't try and it could work we'd lose several people."

"We'll have to research this for a few months. I don't think you should get Samantha's hopes up just yet."

Jane smiled. "You're trying to do the right thing. I'm glad."

Krycek smiled. "Yeah well, it might make up for all the things I've done wrong."

A few days later, Doggett was released from the hospital. He demanded that he be released, not wanting to waste away in the hospital. He signed an agreement that stated that if he felt ill he would return as a in patient, but would be an out patient for the time being.

When he got home finally after being away from it so long, he found everyone to be there. Krycek was the only one missing. He said when he entered his house, "Boy does it feel good to be home!"

Langly laughed, "I bet it does," Mulder said, "You'll finally put an end to the bickering among these three about who sits by Samantha."

Doggett rolled his eyes. "Were they arguin' about that?"

"Yep, twice a week. Every week." Mulder sighed.

Doggett laughed. "This seat next to Samantha, that's mine. Got it boys?"

The Gunmen looked at Doggett and all nodded. Doggett nodded his head with authority. He then started to laugh at how silly it must have looked.

Samantha came out of the kitchen with Scully. She said, "John, you're the guest of honor tonight. Okay, not really a guest, but the person of honor I suppose."

Doggett smiled. He whispered, "I hope I'm not just that later."

Samantha blushed for a moment, "John, don't be vulgar." She smiled, giving him a quick kiss. "Let's get sat down."

They all sat down, waiting for Samantha to serve up the meal. Doggett asked, "Does any one know what Krycek is up to?"

"He's trying to do some type of research," Frohike said. "He reports once a day to us, telling us that he's making ground breakin

Resist or Die (Part Five :Happiness Acheived, Devil Deal Made)

Author: Cinnamon Scully

Later on that week, Doggett was released from the hospital. He went home with Samantha. There was to be a party that night, celebrating a victory not only over death, but over the aliens by granting them this wish of survival.

When he arrived home, he was not surprised to see the large gathering in his living room. The first thing he did was outstretch his hand to Krycek. "I guess you're the man I should be thankin' for figurin' this out."

"Yeah, I guess. It was just a hunch, really." Krycek said, smiling. He sat with Jane on the couch, his arm around her.

"So who is the little lady?"

Krycek smiled, "This is Jane. She and I figured out the whole thing together."

"I think you figured something else out, together I might add," Doggett said, winking at him.

Mulder stood up when he saw Samantha and Doggett walk into the room. He hugged his sister, and clapped Doggett on the back. "Welcome home. Scully should be out here any minute. She's just changing Little John."

"Alright. So what we doin' tonight?" Doggett asked.

"Just having a party. Why does everything have to be about the Resistance? Can't we just kick back for a night?" Mulder asked.

"I totally agree with you there." He held Samantha's hand, and they sat down next to Krycek and Jane.

Samantha smiled as she lay her head down on his shoulder.

The Gunmen came in arguing about something, as usual.

"Hey, I get to talk to them first."

"Why you?" Langly demanded.

"Cause I was the one who told Samantha there was a miracle waiting, you dolt." Frohike snapped back.

"We all helped. We don't have to talk to either of them in any particular order. Did you ever think of that?" Byers said.

"Just who was asking you, Narc?" Langly demanded.

Krycek rolled his eyes, sighing. He leaned towards Doggett, whispering, "You think those three will ever stop arguing about anything?"

"Nah. They'll argue until their faces turns blue."

Both men started to laugh.

Samantha smiled at all three of them. "You don't have to decide an order. Why don't you all come and just talk to us. Have you ever thought of that?" she asked with an eyebrow raised.

"No," Frohike said, sort of ashamed of himself.

Byers sighed, knowing he had just suggested that.

Scully came down the stairs. "Sorry I kept you guys all waiting. He was particularly finicky about being changed."

Mulder took Little John from Scully. He sighed. "I hate when he's like that."

"Tell me about it," Scully said.

After everyone had left, Samantha smiled at Doggett, while they sat on the couch. She sighed. "Welcome home, John."

"It is great to be home. Do you know that I never want to see another plate of Jell-O ever again? I hate the stuff."

Samantha laughed. "I suppose that you do."

Doggett stopped her from getting up. She looked at him with concern in her eyes. He hugged her suddenly. She asked, "What is it, John?"

"I just wanted to make sure you were still here. It's been a roller coaster the past few months. I just want to be sure."

"John, you know it is." She gave him a kiss. "I'm going to get a snack, alright?"

He watched her get up, disappearing into the kitchen.

He smiled to himself, knowing that for the time being at least things were going well. He smiled when she came back out with some ice cream.

She sat down next to him, eating it while he watched her. She said, "So, now that you're back, and the house is finally empty of the wild party, and I can only wonder what Fox and Dana have planned, what would you like to do?"

"Hmm, it's up to you. Anything really," Doggett said.

"I don't know." She took another bite of ice cream.

He asked her, "Have you thought of any names yet?"

"Not any ones in particular. What names do you like?" she asked, smiling at him.

"I sorta like the names Andrew and Stephanie. How about you?"

"Those are good names. I like Andrew a lot. It's got a good ring to it, Andrew Doggett does." She smiled.

"Yeah, it does, doesn't it. Sort of like Samantha Doggett, you think?" Doggett said, smiling at her, before he kissed her.

"Yeah. I do agree with you there. When are we going to set our date anyway? Before the next major crisis please," Samantha said.

"I agree with you on that. We don't want it to interfere with your brother's wedding. It should be our own special day too," Doggett said.

"Yeah. She leaned in towards him, placing her finished ice cream bowl down. She gave him a kiss. "Why don't we talk about that later? I just want to enjoy being with you for the time being. It might be nice after all."

"I think it'll be more than nice." Doggett laughed deep down in his throat.

"Oh, and what makes you say that?" Samantha asked.

"Cause I know so," Doggett said, kissing her more passionately.

"I guess you are the authority on that." She smiled.

"You bet I am."

Mulder smiled at Scully. He mouthed silently, [He's asleep, you know what that means.] Scully smiled at him suddenly. She took his cue. They trooped down the hall as silently as they could, so not to wake him again.

Mulder smiled once he got the door closed. His intense eyes were staring at Scully. She wasn't facing him as he stared right away. She gasped when she turned around. "Mulder, don't stare at me like that."

"Why not stare at the most beautiful woman in the world like that," Mulder said, his voice growing husky. He looked at her beautiful blue eyes for a moment.

She said, "It's sort of scary, that's all."

"Is it?" Mulder wasn't too upset by her admission. He knew that she knew that he would never hurt her. He stepped closer to her, touching her face with his hand. He leaned in, kissing her softly at first.

She let go of all doubts, snaking a hand around to the back of his neck. She willingly parted her lips, allowing his tongue entrance. He smiled against her lips, before he took the invitation.

Scully felt that this was what she was well deserved after watching all the horrible things of the past year or more. Things were actually going well for a change, and though things were difficult still, she knew that no matter what that he would be with her.

He broke the kiss off, his hazel eyes changing to a dark green. It was when his eyes were this shade that she knew he was the most intense. He still had a hand on her face, holding it almost. She looked into his eyes, hoping he saw the naked love for him in them.

He caught the signal, giving her a lopsided classic Mulder grin, the type of grin that made him look almost 20 years younger. He nibbled on his own lip for a moment. He knew that the action had always made Scully attracted to him, though he didn't want her to know that he knew that little secret.

She tilted her head, as if she was about to shoot down one of his theories. She sighed, knowing that no matter what she did, he would still be doing that enticing move.

He laughed then, a rich deep throaty laugh. One that Scully knew that he was full of desire, that passion for her had taken over his senses. He kissed her, as if marking her as his own, taking her mouth as his own possession. He ran his hand from her cheek to the back of her neck, running fingers through her hair.

She responded by snaking an arm around, ruffling his hair, feeling its coarseness, yet like him the refined sleekness of it. He had pulled her closer to himself, and she knew that unless the baby woke that they would be taking this a bit further.

Mulder lifted her up, still kissing her. He felt her legs wrap around his waist. He walked slowly towards the bed. He laid her down on the bed, breaking off the kiss. She looked disappointed for a moment, then she smiled.

Mulder had reached up over his head, pulling his shirt over his head. His bare chest was revealed, and Scully smiled. He gave her that devilish smile.

Scully felt his hands move under her own shirt. She gasped as she felt his hands on her skin. He smiled at her, knowing the action made her full of desire.

He raised an eyebrow, in an indication that he wanted to take it off of her. She immediately obliged about the whole affair. That greeted her with another lopsided grin. It made him look sexy.

"You look good, Scully," he said it low and husky.

She felt herself begin to throb between her legs. He saw the black lace bra she had on. "Good choice, but it must come off."

She reached underneath her back, finding the clasp.

She quickly undid it. Mulder breathed, "Better." He peeled the undergarment off. He began to suckle her breasts, which always made her moan out softly. It was their way of slowly reaching their utopia.

Mulder stopped for a moment, a gasp of disappointment escaping her as he moved away from her. He unbuttoned the jeans he was wearing, having been constricted long enough. He shimmed out of them, his boxers sliding off with them. He stood gloriously naked in front of her.

She smiled.

He took a step towards her. He growled, "You have to be naked too, you know." She nodded. She silently took her own pants off, panties coming with her own pants.

She smiled at him, as he gasped.

"You are so beautiful, Scully." He kissed her before she could answer. His hand found a nipple, and he lightly teased it. She arched into it, gasping against his kiss.

He moved her to a lying down position, pinning her underneath him. She could only smile at him. He gently spread her legs, knowing that she was ready, as ready as he was.

He slowly entered her at first, wanting this to last as

long as possible. He knew that she was slick and ready. He began to pump in and out of her slowly, but as his desire filled him, he increased his speed.

She ground into him, trying to find that release she had dreamt of while he was missing. He matched her intensity with deeper, faster thrusts. He knew that they were both close, as his cock moved faster in and out of her.

She tightened around his large cock, as he thrust harder. He wanted that release. She moaned out, coming close to the edge.

He grunted as he increased his speed, wanting only release. It finally came, as she tightened around him, then spasmed. Her cry of his name was what sent him over the edge. They collapsed sated, ready to sleep in each others embrace.

Mulder and Scully woke the next morning. Mulder asked her, "Scully, we really ought to set a date for our wedding."

"Hmm, what day do you think will work? I don't think we can afford to be making a big production out of this. We should have this as soon as possible. Before we know it, we may find ourselves in the middle of the next huge crisis."

"I agree. How about next Friday. You notify your family, and I'll notify everyone else. Mulder said.

She gave him a kiss, getting up to get dressed. He watched her body moving out of under the covers. "Get up and get dressed, lazy bones." She ordered him, a smile playing across her lips. He did as told.

Mulder said, "You make breakfast and take care of Little John. I'm going to tell Sam and Dogg Man, alright?"

"Go ahead Mulder," she said, giving him one more kiss.

He took the short walk over to Doggett's place. He knocked on the door, hearing Doggett shout, "Yeah, just a minute."

The door opened, Doggett smiled, "What can I do for ya, Mulduh?"

"We're going to set our big day for next Friday. We want this done and out of the way before some stupid crisis takes place," Mulder said, a lopsided grin playing across his lips.

"I see. Sam! Your brother's wedding is next Friday, you want ours to be on Tuesday!" he shouted to her.

Sam came down the stairs, she said, "No John, I want mine to be at least a week apart from Fox's. How about the Saturday after that," she said, kissing him when she got to where Doggett stood.

"Alright. I'm supposing you have to go and tell the Gunmen and Skinner," Doggett said.

"Yep. I thought I'd call them. Scully's making breakfast as we speak."

"Ah, I see. We should have some breakfast ourselves," Doggett said, smiling.

Mulder nodded. "You guys have fun. I'm sure Little John will make breakfast an interesting game."

"I bet he does, Fox. I'm sure he's not any worse than you were."

"How would you know?" Mulder said, a smile playing across his lips.

"Lucky guess. Run along before Dana gets crabby," Samantha said, giving Mulder a hug.

Mulder smiled as he walked away. It felt good that for once life was a bit normal compared to the roller coaster of the last few months, if not the past few years. He walked back to his house, smiling. He knew that Scully would have breakfast ready, unless Little John was particularly crabby this morning.

The day had come for Mulder and Scully to finally wed.

Mulder was nervous as he waited to get ready. He knew that this was what he wanted, what was right, but he was afraid that marriage would change what they had to something he couldn't recognize.

The wedding was simple, with Father McQue presiding.

Though the Catholic rule required six months of marriage counseling and classes of Catholic rules, McQue allowed them to skip the classes. Scully had pleaded with him that they had been trying to get married for a while now, and each time they would set the date, the world would crash around their ears. He consented to the union as long as later on down the road Mulder would agree to taking some type of classes.

He stood in the waiting area with Doggett, who looked very cool and calm. Mulder's palms sweated. He asked nervously, "What if this is wrong?"

"Wrong, listen to yourself. How on earth could this be wrong?" Doggett asked.

"You're right. But what if marriage makes things so much more complicated?" Mulder asked, his mind was in over drive.

"Calm down, before you know it, you'll be thinking this is the best thing you ever did," Doggett said.

"Next week you tell me the same thing, okay?"

"Yeah." Mulder nodded.

"Go stand by the altar, I have to escort Samantha.

You'll do just fine. Don't be so antsy." Doggett smiled at him, before he left.

Mulder exited the area to stand up by the altar, facing the back of the church. He clasped his hands together, trying to keep them from shaking.

The music started to play, signifying the wedding party's entrance before the bride. It was a small party, but fit just right. Doggett and Samantha walked up the aisle, separating at the altar to go to the bride's side, and to the groom's.

The Gunmen walked, single file, followed by Skinner.

It was time. The music for the bride's entrance started to play. Mulder felt like he was going to faint for a moment. Scully hadn't even entered the church yet.

Scully finally made her entrance. She was stunning in a white dress, it was tight fitting, and slightly low cut. The lace trimming made her look beautiful. Mulder could only gape at her as she confidently walked down the aisle.

Bill Scully Jr. was the one giving her away. They progressed slowly, until Mulder felt as if he was about to die. He wanted this to be over, so he could officially say that Scully was his wife.

She made it finally to the altar, Father McQue starting the customary speech.

To Mulder, the ceremony was a blur. He could only remember her face as she gazed into his. The words the Father said did not register on his ears. He just knew the right times to respond. Suddenly the part that he had been waiting for arrived. He got to kiss the bride, his bride, his Scully, now his wife.

The group applauded them as they sealed their fates forever, now entangled and intertwined with each other. Mulder felt as if the world had finally given him that break he was looking for.

After the ceremony, the reception shortly began afterwards. They had reserved a banquet hall at the restaurantm, Paper Moons. They would have, much as the ceremony was, a small reception.

Doggett offered to fix Samantha's plate, after the speeches were given. She accepted, shushing him so Mulder could speak.

"Now, I don't know about you, but I'm really waiting for that next bad thing to happen. How about you? Alright, now that we're beyond that, I'd like to say that it took an awfully long time to get here. Damn, it took a long time. If there is one thing though, no one can say, you two rushed into things, you aren't thinking clearly. Blah blah, you know the drill. If there is one thing, I'd like to say that my partner, now my wife has been my soul mate for so long, I don't want to get sappy on you or anything, but without her by my side, defending me, shooting me once, and watching my back, I might not stand here before you today."

Frohike heckled Mulder for a moment, "Yeah, you needed her to cover you pathetic ass!"

Mulder smiled, before continuing, "Yeah, but Frohike, my ass is so much better than yours, think about that one for a moment. Who wouldn't want to save this nice piece of flesh? As I was trying to say, may she continue doing as she has always done, just with a new

Scully got up, giving Mulder a kiss. "I certainly won't be as wordy as he was, at least I'll try not to be. I know that a long time ago this should have happened, but as Mulder said, without him watching over me, I might not be here either. I may have had to face death innumerable times, but I never once had to face it alone. Not even while I lay in a hospital stricken with a terminal illness did I ever face death alone. Mulder was there, not only in spirit, but racing against that clock to save my life. I hope that he'll be around to do that, but I also hope that he won't have to do that so often. It is nice knowing he is there, but I don't like facing those situations any more than if I were alone."

The room applauded her speech. Frohike said, "See Mulder, you should take some lessons from her."

Mulder just shook his head, "Frohike, grow up."

"Only if you do first," Frohike said, laughing.

Doggett said, "Hey, hey you two, we don't need a brawl ruinin' the wedding. Besides, next week I'd like to have Mulder there, at my wedding, not lyin' in a hospital. Stop it."

The room laughed at the statement. Krycek asked loudly, not able to hide it from them anymore, "How do you ever live with each other any ways?"

They shrugged. "Just do, I guess." Byers replied.

Mulder said, "Enough, I want my food already."

The CSM was speaking to an ABH. "I want to know how that woman foils me every time. I can't possibly get the answer right. I plot to do something so I can find out what she is, so I can reproduce it, and she evades me every time!" CSM was very shaken by the whole affair. "She walked in here, and stole back Mulder's baby like it was a walk in the park. On top of it, Agent Doggett lying dying a hospital and now he's healed. I can't do a thing against her."

The ABH said, "I can make a compromise with you. I can't give you Samantha Mulder right away, we want to know something about her as well. I can get you her, only when she does not suspect you anymore. Back off, and wait to strike. She heads a Resistance to us, we want to know what that is so we can destroy it. I give you Samantha Mulder, you give me the details of the Resistance."

"That could take years! I don't have years to play around with games like this. I'm an old man. If I were only 20 years younger."

"I only offer you this once. You take it, or you leave it. Take your choice. I may find myself in trouble with the leaders for offering you the best test subject of all time."

"Best test subject of all time is she? Well, I do think I could benefit you with this as well. I could help step up colonization by being able to make other humans what she is now. But only if I am saved in the end, and not taken over."

"I must get back to you on that before I can approve your immunity from take over."

"Fine. When you come back with your answer will I only give you mine." Cancer Man puffed on his cigarette.

"Say this takes years to accomplish this. Do I still get protection from you?"

"Yes. All will be set later, depending upon the answers I receive," The ABH said, his voice unemotional as always.

"Go, talk to your leaders. I want to plan how I would successfully execute this plan in the first place."

The next week Doggett understood exactly how Mulder had felt at the altar. He was nervous, wondering what it would be like to be married again, and to Samantha Mulder. He wondered if it was the right plan, but underneath all of his jitters he knew it was the right plan.

Mulder was in Doggett's role of the past week. He said, "It's going to be fine. Don't worry so much.

You'll be glad that you did this."

"Did I tell you that last week?" Doggett asked, pacing before Mulder.

"Yeah, I think you did. I took the advice, and look how happy I am now." He gave Doggett a sarcastic smile, over emphasizing his happiness.

"That isn't helpin', Mulduh. Cut it out," Doggett said.

"It wasn't meant to."

Doggett glared at him for a moment. Mulder said, "I got to get going, just walk over to that altar. Things will be fine."

Doggett nodded. He walked over to the altar, facing the back. He remembered his first wedding, how it was so over blown, 1000 guests, most of them he had never seen were present, his wife insisting that America be invited. It had too many flowers. It was just so overproduced, that now as he stood at the simple altar he knew that his first marriage had been a mistake.

He saw Mulder and Scully enter the back, walking slowly up to the altar, separating much as Samantha and he had the week before. Scully gave him a large smile of reassurance.

The Gunmen followed Krycek and Jane, then progressed down the aisle. Doggett was getting more and more nervous as the moments ticked by. He thought for a moment, remembering the Princess Bride's bishop stating what Marriage was. It was just his jitters getting to him.

She entered at the music, walking in a simple white dress. To him, she looked stunning. She smiled confidently, walking her way slowly, Skinner the one giving her away. It had been decided that Skinner would, since Mulder was the best man.

Doggett stared for a moment, feeling the world around him and her disappear. This was what real weddings were meant to be like. She made it up to where he stood, facing him.

Father McQue lead the ceremony again, knowing that though Samantha wasn't Catholic, Doggett was, though he didn't practice as much as he should.

Just as the ceremony had been a blur for Mulder, so it went for Doggett. He heard the permission to kiss the bride, and so he did. His future had been sealed more than it had been in the past months. An Alien abduction could have not sealed him into the Resistance as much as this did.

He heard the applause around him, knowing that not only he thought this was right, but so did Samantha, and everyone present. When he stopped kissing Samantha, Mulder said, "Now you're my brother in law.

Think about that for a moment. We're family."

"Mulduh, I think ever since your sister showed up we were family. Let's get to the reception. I'm hungry."

"I know that feeling, had it last week myself," Mulder said with a laugh.

Title: Resist or Die (Part Six: Old Habits Die Hard) Author: Cinnamon Scully

A couple of months later, Doggett came down the stairs one evening. Samantha was lying on the sofa, fast asleep. Pregnancy was wearing her out. Doggett smiled when he saw her. He didn't want to disturb her.

Mulder and Scully were to come over for dinner in a little while. He prepared a nice dinner of pork chops, allowing Samantha to sleep. He knew it was his best prepared meal.

Mulder and Scully had decided to join them for dinner at Doggett's house that night, mainly because Samantha was so tired all the time. It worried everyone, so they took it easy for her.

Doggett set the table, smiling at Samantha on the sofa. She had her hand holding her head up, elbow resting on the sofa arm. The sofa reclined, and her legs were supported by the foot stool. She looked peaceful.

Once he had gotten dinner mostly prepared, he set it on the table, knowing that Mulder and Scully would be there any moment. He walked over to Samantha, brushing a hand gently on her cheek.

She blinked, "What, is it supper time?" Her voice was full of sleep and she yawned.

"Yeah, Mulduh and Scully should be coming over anytime soon," Doggett said, smiling.

"I can't believe they still call themselves by their last names. She doesn't have his name does she?"

"I don't think so."

"It's still silly."

"I know. Now, I'll help you to the table. You should get sat before Little John shows up, demanding all that attention he seems to. They have gotten louder since he's arrived. Mulder has got to learn how to calm the kid down."

"Hey, that's not our problem, especially at night, at least not yet." She kissed him. "Besides, he's cute."

"I'll give you that, now let's get going," Doggett said. He put the foot rest down, helping her up. He lead her to the table slowly, her ankles swelling.

"I think I'd much more welcome the tests compared to this." She was joking, and they both laughed at how un true it was. She finally made it to the chair he had pulled out for her. Being six months pregnant did not agree with her.

The door bell rang, with Doggett rushing to answer the door. He opened it, finding Mulder, Scully, and Little John on the other side. "Come on in. Supper's on the table."

Mulder and Scully walked over to the table, smiling when they saw Samantha already sitting down. Scully took the high chair that they used, setting it down next to her chair, then placed Little John into the chair. It was a production that happened at every meal.

Mulder had already started helping Doggett serve the meal. He served Scully and served his own plate.

Doggett served Samantha's plate before his, and served his own plate last.

"So, why do you think it's been so quiet lately?" Doggett asked.

"Hmm, guess they're either plotting some evil plot like they do in Bond, or they don't know what to do for the time being. I'd say we should take the quiet time while we got it," Mulder said.

Scully nodded. "I agree, who knows when the next stupid thing will happen."

They left it at that for the rest of the meal.

Later on that night, Samantha slept fitfully. She dreamed of the tests, remembering them, some from early childhood, other times from her adult test sessions.

[She was a little girl again, strapped in the chair.

She was so terribly afraid, so frightened that she would lose her life. She could feel the Black Oil move on her body, and she whimpered, eventually screaming in pain and terror. She writhed back. She froze as the Oil moved over her body. She began to struggle, but the energy her body was generating to fuse the Black Oil and her blood rendered her exhausted. A laser ripped across her belly, and she screamed once before falling unconscious, unable to concentrate on staying awake.

She was in another testing session, the ABH's instructing her to move the dead from the chairs around her. They forced her to do horrible tests, making her physically sick at times. She wept often, when she thought They were not watching. She refused to show Them that she was afraid and in pain. She prayed often, wishing that the end would come.] In her sleep she had cried out. She was rolling from side to side, as if she were trying to escape the person who was torturing her. Doggett woke, trying to calm her down. He was afraid something would happen to the baby.

She woke, her eyes clouded for a moment. She was crying and she repeated over and over again, "Fox, forgive me." Doggett wondered what the phrase meant.

He shook her, hoping to take her from her stupor.

She blinked, looking at Doggett, "John? Where am I?"

"You're here at home. It's okay," Doggett said softly, trying to reassure her, though knowing that she was having a difficult time. "What do you need forgiveness for, Sam?"

"I, I was dreaming that I was with Them. I only wanted to die, oh I'm so sorry for wanting that." Sam said, crying. She had turned away from him, not wanting to upset him.

Doggett moved over to where she was, wrapping his arms around her, speaking softly into her ear, "You have every right to feel that way, but you shouldn't have to now. It may happen again, but some one will always love you."

Samantha started to sob, unable to control her feelings anymore. She said, "It was terrible. I hate the night mares the most, I always have. I hate them because I can't block them out like I can the tests while they are happening."

Doggett kissed her temple, whispering, "It's alright now. I'm here, and if you ever need to talk to me, I'll always be there. If you ever need to talk to Mulduh, he'll always be ready to talk to you. You know that Scully will too. Sam, don't face this alone."

"I'm not. John, I might not have felt all those nights like dying if I would have had you then. I can never thank you enough," Samantha said, turning around in his arms. She saw his eyes in the moonlight. They were filled with sadness.

"You going to be okay?" Doggett asked.

"Yeah, I will be now. I'm tired," Samantha said, a yawn taking over. She fell asleep, and Doggett could only smile.

The next morning, Doggett called Mulder while Samantha slept. He didn't want to wake her, especially since she was sleeping peacefully. "Mulduh, I think something is up with Sam."

"What do you mean, Dogg Man?" Mulder answered, his voice tiny in the phone to Doggett's ear.

"She had bad nightmares last night, about the tests.

She asked forgiveness from you, for wishing to die up there, I guess."

"Me? Why me? Is she okay right now?" Mulder asked, concern in his voice.

"Yeah, she's sleeping yet. I didn't want to disturb her, she just got comfortable and peaceful. I don't know what to tell you besides that she was upset last night," Doggett said.

"Is there a time that I could maybe talk to her, we both could if you want." Mulder asked.

"Hmm, don't see why not. It might help her let go of all of that, make it a bit better at least," Doggett said.

"How about Scully and I come over for breakfast. We'll leave Little John at the Gunmen's, so we can just talk," Mulder said.

"Sounds good. What time you plan on being here?" Doggett asked.

"As soon as I can get dressed, Scully to agree with the plan, and the Gunmen to take Little John for a bit," Mulder said.

"About a half an hour then."

"Yep. About then. See you then," Mulder said.

Doggett hung up. He went up the stairs to see if she was still asleep. When he got there, she was tossing and turning in her sleep. She was muttering again.

"No, no, don't do this to me. Please don't."

Doggett kneeled on the floor next to the bed. He took her hand into his, whispering, "Wake up, Sam."

Samantha jerked away from him. It pierced him in his heart, but he understood that it wasn't him she pulled away from, it was Them. He kissed her on her cheek, hoping that would wake her. It worked.

She looked over into his face, her eyes full of pain and fear. She began to cry, knowing that she felt guilty for getting upset. She sat up, hugging him. She sobbed into his shoulder, apologizing to him. "I'm so sorry, John. I don't mean to be upset like this all the time."

"Don't worry about it. It's not your fault. Just let it all out, don't keep inside. You'll feel better if you let it out," he said, soothing her.

She shook in his arms, her pain was so intense and she felt as she had when she had no one that loved her.

She turned her face into his shoulder, in attempt to hide what she felt. She hated being upset like this.

Part of it was her pregnancy, the other the memories that she carried with her.

He rocked her back and forth, in an attempt to make her feel safer. He wanted her to feel loved and secure. She began to relax, sighing, but still holding on to him.

A voice down stairs let Doggett know that Mulder and Scully were there. Mulder had shouted up the stairs that they were there. Doggett helped Samantha up, taking her hand into his. He lead her downstairs slowly. When they reached the living room, Mulder and Scully stood up.

Mulder asked, "Are you okay, Sam?"

Samantha nodded, her lip trembling again. She looked at Doggett for a moment, her eyes pleading if she could hug her brother. Doggett nodded yes, urging her to do so.

She hugged Mulder, crying all over again. Mulder held his sister close to him. He knew that she was having a hard time with all of what was going on. He placed his chin on the top of her head, his hand holding her close to him.

Scully asked Doggett quietly, "What did she dream about?"

"She dreamt about the tests. She says she dreams about those things from time to time, especially after a testing session," Doggett replied quietly, not wanting to upset Samantha further.

Mulder whispered to his sister, "Sam, why don't we sit down on the couch. You can tell us all about your dreams there. It might help you."

She nodded silently, allowing Mulder to lead her to the couch. Mulder helped her sit down. He looked at Doggett, indicating that he should sit next to Samantha. Doggett took a seat next to her.

Samantha took his hand into hers. She looked down for a while before beginning. "When I was first tested on, I was so afraid all the time. Sometimes when I dream, I remember what it was like to be that little girl that I once was. I dream about being so scared, and when they let the Black Oil fall on me, I would cry and scream. It would always exhaust me, the energy of the Black Oil infusing itself to me, and my struggles."

She bit her lip to prevent herself from crying.

Doggett gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "I always wanted to die the most when I would come back to earth, and all my memories that I had kept from myself up there would come back to me in my sleep. I always prayed for the end, and I never got it. It made me feel as if I wasn't worth anything and that I deserved what I was going through."

She bit her lip again, turning her head into Doggett's shoulder for a moment before continuing. "Later on I began to lose emotional feelings when I was up there.

I never allowed myself to show pain while I was with Them. It made me feel like I had given Them the satisfaction They craved. Of course when They wanted me to break in front of Them, They would force me to dispose of the dead before testing me. I always have nightmares of that. It still makes me sick to my stomach."

Mulder was angered that this had to happen to her. He controlled his emotions for her though. He knew she was already upset enough. He whispered to her, "We'll stop those tests on not only you, but everyone some day. We can and we will."

Samantha gave him a weak smile. She was a little wore out by telling them about these experiences. Doggett put his arm around her shoulder, pulling her towards him. She put her head down on his shoulder, sighing.

"I hope so."

Krycek sat in the apartment that Jane and he had gotten. He was lost in thought, and guilt was washing over him in waves. He was feeling bad for the past wrongs he had a long time ago.

He couldn't believe the things he had done in the past. Most of it was for Cancer Man, and that angered him more. He knew that Jane would say he was doing such good now that it would cancel out the bad, but he felt that it did not.

He was worrying about the things that he had done. He wondered if Mulder even felt that he could trust him.

He found things to be so new in this Resistance. It wasn't a thing like the other one he had participated in. The other one was so violent and so dark that he often wondered if he had been set up in the first place.

Samantha's Resistance was so different to him. They took care of the victims, they tried to plan a way to stop from being abducted again. It was so human in its nature, and that compassion was so new to him.

He remembered when he had first found about Samantha Mulder's return. She had been beautiful and mysterious, but in the end just not his type. Besides, she could beat the crap out of him at will. That never sat well with him. He remembered attempting to shoot her, and attempting to shoot Doggett shortly after, going in for the kill shot that time. He felt guilty, and he wondered deep down why she had ever forgiven him. It perplexed him.

Jane sat down next to him. She asked, "What are you so busy thinking about?"

"Nothing." He lied, knowing that he shouldn't thrust his pain onto her.

"You know that is not true. Tell me, what were you thinking about?"

Krycek turned dark eyes on her. He was in a dark mood.

"Everything I've done wrong I guess."

"Alex, you've done so much good, too. You can't expect yourself to be perfect. I wouldn't love you as much if you were perfect," Jane said, giving him a kiss.

Krycek smiled a bit, before saying, "You didn't know me then."

"I know you now, how many times must I tell you that?"

She said, brushing a lock of long, wavy, blonde hair from her face.

"I killed Mulder's father, Scully's sister, that's not all. I tried to kill Samantha and Doggett. You know what Doggett said to me before Samantha saved his life? He said that I would be damned for all time.

Maybe he is right about that."

"No, you know something, I believe God forgives us for sins if we do good and ask him to forgive us. You can't judge yourself since you are not God. The only thing you do is to examine your conscience, and make your faults less of a flaw, but a part of your wonderful character."

He smiled, giving her a kiss. "You always know how to make me feel better. Thank you."

"No problem. I'm glad to help you. Alex, you saved not only Doggett's life, you saved mine, and for that I can not thank you enough."

Jane smiled at him, giving him a kiss. She knew that he was feeling guilty a lot about a past that he could not change, but could make up for instead.

Krycek knew that he was lucky to have met Jane. She was a breath of fresh air from Marita. While Marita had been dangerously sexy, Jane was more sweet and strong. She didn't assert herself over him, and he didn't over her. With Marita it had been a power struggle, who had more.

He put his hand up to the back of her neck, pulling her in further for a kiss. He loved Jane more than anyone he had ever met. She didn't make him feel bad for having one arm, she didn't make him feel as if he had to be the bad boy that he knew he had always been.

She just let him be himself.

She moved, to sitting on his lap. She kissed him again, and curled up on him. She knew he enjoyed sitting with her like that. She nuzzled her nose into his shoulder.

Krycek smiled. She was a bit smaller than him, and he knew that with her cancer gone she would be happier now. He was glad that he had been a part of making that dream come true.

Though the relationship had seemed an unlikely one, they found themselves wishing it had happened sooner.

They knew it felt right, and that though it might look awkward to anyone who knew one or the other, it was something they both wanted.

Krycek was of course wearing his leather jacket, a white tee shirt underneath, and a pair of jeans to complete it. It was one of his favorite outfits. Jane commented on it as well. She had always liked it too.

She asked, "Would you mind taking the jacket off? It's uncomfortable to lay on."

Krycek slid it off slowly. He didn't want her to fall off his lap onto the floor. Once he had accomplished the goal of removing the jacket, she cuddled up to him all over again. He could only hold her to his chest.

She eventually fell asleep, her arms wrapping her arms around him. Krycek knew that he was stuck, but he didn't mind. He didn't have anything to do at that moment any ways.

Once Samantha was asleep again, Mulder asked if he could talk to Doggett. He asked, "Is Sam having any difficulties with her pregnancy?"

"Not that I know of. She seems to be healthy and doing just fine. The doctor said that she was doing fine after that incident when I was returned," Doggett said softly, his voice full of concern and a bit of fear for what it might mean.

Mulder sighed. "I hope that her being an Alien Human Hybrid isn't going to affect how this child comes out to the extent that she has to let it go. That would break her heart. She's had enough heart break."

"I agree."

Scully sighed, "Mulder, she just needs a vacation staying at home not worrying about the Resistance and things like that. Maybe you could take care of things while she's taking care of herself. It might help her a lot."

"I agree with Dana," Doggett said, looking up from the spot on the floor he had been intently staring at.

"Now, the only problem with that plan, and I agree with you totally, is how do we convince her that she should take a break and just relax." Milder asked, wondering how he would tackle this.

"Let me handle it, Mulder," Scully said. "I can talk woman to woman with her. I can make more sense to her about this, and I won't be making her feel like I'm stereotyping pregnant women as weaklings."

"Alright Scully, she's all yours. You try to convince her to take a break. I hope you can. I'm sure she would love to have this baby."

Doggett quietly said, "I think we should let her rest for now. She needs to sleep. Let's just hope that she sleeps more peacefully now than she did last night. It was a difficult night for her."

"Yes, it was. I hope she doesn't have too many of those nights from now on," Mulder said.

Doggett said, "I think I'll go and sit in the living room with her if you don't mind. I want to be there if she should have a nightmare all of the sudden. It would make me feel better."

"Go right ahead. It would be good for someone to be with her if she should have a night mare. I'm sure there was never anyone there before, but she does need it now," Scully said.

Doggett went back into the living room. He sat down on the sofa, next to her sleeping form, by her head. She was peaceful looking, and he spread a blanket over her tired form. He wished that she would be allowed to have happiness now. He hoped that she would be able to just let all these things go, if only for a while.

When Mulder and Scully got home, Krycek was waiting for them in the living room. Mulder was surprised, and all Krycek had to say was, "Old habits die hard."

Mulder laughed. "So, what can I do for you?"

"I actually wanted to talk to you about something."

Krycek said, becoming shy all of the sudden.

Scully said, "I sense a man to man talk here. I'll call the Gunmen and make sure Little John hasn't been made drunk and has all the correct appendages."

After Scully left, Mulder sat down, "So what is it? I seem to be helping everyone this morning."

"I'm thinking of asking Jane to marry me soon. I just have never though of how to do that before. I'm generally not the marrying type." Krycek admitted.

"Oh? That certainly was fast," Mulder replied.

"I just don't want to mess this up. I know that if Marita finds out she'll try to kill her. You know that Marita is just as bad as I used to be." Krycek said, turning his guilt ridden eyes down, not wanting Mulder to see them.

Mulder sighed. "I'm sure she'll try, but if there is one person that can prevent Marita from doing anything to Jane, it has to be you. You know how Marita thinks.

While she may be not so nice, I'm sure you can handle her if need be."

"I just don't know if I can. I don't want to be like I used to be." Krycek said.

"I know you feel guilty for your past. I know you don't think that I have forgiven you yet. I have.

You've done too much good lately to make me able to hold a grudge," Mulder said quietly.

Krycek smiled, "I forgot that you can read my mind."

"You really love Jane, don't you?" Mulder asked, knowing the answer already.

"Yes. I really do. I would never would have met her if Doggett hadn't needed a cure. I didn't think to even get rewarded for my actions there, and I got rewarded in the end."

"Sometimes that's how things go. If I were you, I'd ask her. Don't take as long as Scully and I took."

Krycek laughed. "I hope not to. I just don't know how she would take me asking her. I'm sure there is someone out there that is better than me for her."

"That's always the risk. You've taken many many risks and some of those worked out for you. This is one risk I'd take if I were you. It would make you happy. We all deserve happiness," Mulder said.

"I suppose we all do, don't we?" Krycek smiled.

"Yeah. Now go and ask her before it is too late. You don't want to miss out on this opportunity," Mulder said. "I should get something to eat soon. I haven't had breakfast yet. I wonder if Scully is making some.

You're welcome to stay for breakfast if you like."

"Why not. I haven't eaten yet either."

When they entered the kitchen, Scully was doing three things all at once. She was talking on the phone with her mother, making breakfast, and setting the table.

Mulder smiled.

"Yeah Mom, I left Little John with the boys this morning. I know. He's doing fine they say. I'm a bit worried myself. What? Oh, you want to know how Mulder is doing. Good. I know that it has been a stressful year. Sam? She's okay, but she's been having some nightmares. Don't be such a mother hen. I know you think you have to make up to her for her childhood and that you're the only parent left."

Mulder set a place for Krycek while Scully continued talking to her mother. Mulder asked him, "Do you think she'll tell her ever thing?"

"You better hope not." Krycek said.

Scully finally hung up. She said, "Mom says hi. I didn't know you were eating with us, Krycek."

"I set a plate out for him, if that's alright."

"It's perfectly fine," Scully said.

Krycek sat down, waiting for breakfast. Scully put down three glasses of milk down, then went back to the stove to finish cooking.

Scully asked, "So, what was the big man to man all about?"

"I was thinking of marrying Jane." Krycek replied.

"Oh? That would be a good thing. I'm sure things will work out just fine for you."

Krycek said, "I hope so. I wouldn't want to get this far and then find out it was the wrong thing to be doing. It would be the perfect thing to happen for my life though."

"Don't you go saying that," Scully said. She set a plate of toast and eggs in front of him.

Mulder said, "So, have you thought of purchasing a ring just yet?"

"Yeah. I have my eye on one. It's very expensive but I hope to be able to afford it."

"It's worth it," Mulder said. "Scully wears both rings all the time."

"Funny that you two still call each other by last names, did you know that?" Krycek said, a smile on his face.

"Not really. It would sound funny if I started calling him Fox, and he hates that any ways. Samantha is the only privileged one with that ability."

"Yeah. I don't know if I could call her Dana either.

It would seem awkward and all," Mulder said.

"I see. Old habits do die hard, don't they. I was just curious."

"I don't see myself retraining myself on that any time soon. If people want to think it's weird they can do that all they want," Mulder said. "Besides they probably think I'm a nut job and a half already."

Krycek laughed at that one. "I'm sure your neighbors wonder about you from time to time."

"Yeah, there is a guy who looks at me like he's an ax murderer. Especially when he sees me hugging Sam. Must think I'm having an affair with her or something," Mulder said.

"Yeah. He gawked at me the other day when I let John come over for a visit the other day. Then the Lone Gunmen showed up. Mulder was off doing something, I think paperwork at the time, and I was on my way out the door. John and I were going to go, the Gunmen taking Little John. When we walked out the door, the neighbor stared at us like he always does. We both tried saying hi, but he refused to do so. I think he thinks we all cheat on each other or something," Scully said.

"Gotta love your neighbor." Krycek said.

"Okay, Mr. Rogers," Mulder said.

Doggett was listening to music down the hall from the bedroom in his office. He had put Samantha in the bedroom to rest. She was tired all day long, and he worried that she might upset her pregnancy. He had called into Skinner already that morning, telling him that he would need some leave for the day.

He had picked up some paperwork to do, so he wouldn't be wasting the day. Besides, at home he could listen to music and not dead silence. He had it low enough to hear if Samantha had another nightmare.

His choice of music would have surprised any one who knew him well enough. He had Pink Floyd going on his stereo. He might be a skeptic, but he really enjoyed all the strange music and science fiction. Pink Floyd seemed to have a calming effect on him. He really needed that today after all the upset with Samantha.

It also blocked out the boredom of paper work.

He couldn't help but think about Samantha for a moment before starting. She had a difficult night the night before, and he hoped that she wouldn't have a bad day to go with it. He was worried about her pregnancy, and that she wouldn't be able to make it to term.

Part of the reason he had this fear was connected to his son. After the death of his son he was afraid of having children again. He feared that something would happen and he would lose another child and possibly the wife that he had with him at that time. Now that he had Samantha, he was very much afraid that this would happen again. He couldn't dream of losing her.

Before he had met her life had been a little empty, too empty. Now that she was here he knew he had something to look forward to. He didn't have to wish for someone any more.

He settled down into his paperwork, letting the music take over the thoughts he was having, its strange sounds and rhythms making him stop worrying. He knew it was very psychedelic in nature, but he enjoyed it none the less. Most of his former co workers had never known what he was like out of the office. Perhaps that was why he had said what he had to Scully that first day.

The pulsating beat was so strange and so out of this world, and he relished in it, wishing he could turn it up, but didn't want to miss if Samantha should need something.

He wondered if Mulder and Scully would check up on him, see if there was something wrong, but thought against it a moment later, they had been there that morning, shortly after he had called telling them of her nightmares. He sighed. Paper work would just have to wait.

He shut the music off, leaving his office to check up on Samantha. He couldn't stop worrying about her, and since it would refuse to leave him be he decided to check things out.

["NO! Don't take my baby! Please, you promised me that my baby would be safe. Don't do this to me!!" Samantha cried. She felt Them taking her baby out of her womb in a slow painful manner.

They held the dead infant above her, and she screamed.

They had killed her child. She screamed, "You godawful bastards! You killed my child. You took my child from me!" She noticed that the child was a boy. "My son, you took my son from me. Why! Answer me you Black Blooded Monsters!"

An ABH approached her, "We had to prevent the first earth born AHH without testing. We had to destroy it.

You know that."

"You told me my baby would be safe. You promised me that since I was a good test subject and that I went so willingly and did not resist you that I would keep my child. You liar!"

The ABH walked away from her, leaving her to mourn her son's death alone in darkness and fear. She feared if she would survive the testing.]

She woke with a start. She was crying. "Oh John, it was terrible."

"Sh, it's over now."

"They took our baby from me."

"It was a dream. Our child is still here. See, it just kicked. It was a horrible nightmare," Doggett said softly. He held her close to himself, knowing she had dreamt something terrible. The loss of her child. He knew how that felt.

She sobbed into his shoulder, whispering, "If I were to lose our baby, would you still love me?" She feared that she might lose his love if she should miss carry.

"Of course I will always love you. What made you think that I wouldn't?" Doggett asked, concerned that she would think such a thing.

"If I did, it would hurt you deeply, I know that you still hurt from your son before. I just don't want the same thing to happen for you now. I just think that it might make you leave me."

"I wouldn't leave you for something like that. You can't control that. It's never your fault when a child does not carry to term. Unless you abuse your body, you can't expect to take blame for deaths that occur before reaching term. Samantha, don't think I would ever leave you for anything at all," Doggett whispered, kissing her forehead.

She gave him a weak smile. "I guess that dream just made me so afraid. They took him from me, and told me that he had to be destroyed because of the fact he would be the first earth born AHH with no testing," Samantha said quietly.

"I hope that things don't come down to that. It would be horrible for it to be that way. I want you to know though if that does happen, I will not just stop loving you because of it. You mean too much to me to make me ever do that."

"I'm awake now, and I don't think I'll be sleeping much. What were you listening to any ways?" Samantha asked.

"Pink Floyd, The Wall. Why?" Doggett answered.

"Oh, never heard it," Samantha said.

"It doesn't really fit my personality, but I like it," Doggett said a little shy.

"The title suggested that. I think everyone should like what ever they like and not what ever they are expected to like," Samantha said.

"Want to listen to it?" he asked, getting up from the floor. She sat up, nodding.

"It's weird, I'm just warning you." He smiled at her.

"Nothing can be weirder than me," Samantha said.

"I don't know about that. You've seen Michael Jackson, right?" Doggett said.

"Yeah, he's a black guy, big deal."

"He's white now."

"How do you go from black to white?"

"Ask him. Let's go," Doggett said, helping her up. He led her down the hall to his office. He said, "I hope you enjoy it. It certainly does make doing paper work a lot more fun. I don't think of how boring it is then. Of course I do sing the lyrics and end up writing them down on accident from time to time. I hate that."

Samantha laughed. "You do the cutest things sometimes, did you know that?"

"I do? No one has ever told me that before," Doggett said.

"Yes you do."

"Is that a problem."

"No. Should it be?" she asked, an eyebrow raised.

"Guess not. I wouldn't want that to be a bad thing."

"Aren't you supposed to be at work?"

"Called in and asked for the day off. Thought it would be better than sitting in the office worrying about you." He touched her cheek with his hand.

She said, "You shouldn't worry about me so much. I'm not a weakling."

"I know you're not, but I can't help it," Doggett said, smiling at her.

"I knew that, but you still shouldn't do that."

"Why not? It might do you some good to have some one worry over you." He kissed her. "Don't you think?"

"Yeah. Now show me this music of yours," Samantha said.

Title: Resist or Die (Part Seven: A New Man) Author Cinnamon Scully

Krycek left Mulder and Scully's satisfied that he had done the right thing. It was also the first time he had ever felt comfortable with them. He felt a lot better now, and he knew that Mulder wasn't about to lie to him.

He was fumbling with the idea of buying a ring for Jane. He was still worried that she might leave him for someone who was better, perhaps with the correct number of arms. Yes, though he functioned quite well with only one arm he still felt like people gawked at him because of his disability. He only viewed it in this light when he knew people were staring at him.

Other than that it never was a hindrance, at any time.

He hoped that Mulder was right about the whole idea that Jane would want him, and that he should take his chances now. He was a little worried about Marita, but knew that in his heart that if it came down to a fight between her, he'd win. He was bigger, better trained, and held his own against almost anyone. Besides, Marita wasn't AHH. That was the only thing he feared in a fight.

He knew that Jane told him often that she wouldn't love him if he wasn't the way he was. She said that the way he was appealed to her the most. He wondered if that was true, but knew that a look into her green eyes told the whole truth. She did. He knew it, but his mind refused to believe his heart. His heart already knew, now it was just convincing his analytical brain that his heart was the right one.

He walked down the street after locking his car near a jewelry store. He decided to at least buy the ring for her. He could always ask then. He walked in the store, and the store owner asked, "Looking for anything particular, sir?"

"Yeah, a ring. An engagement ring."

"Here's our selection. I hope the lucky lady finds them beautiful."

"Me too. I want this to be perfect." Krycek looked down at the different bands. Some were gold, some silver, some had diamonds and other precious gems. He saw a band of gold with a diamond surrounded by emerald stones. It made him think of her eyes. She would love it. "May I see this one?" He pointed to the ring he had been looking at.

"Yes." The clerk took the ring out from under the counter. "This is a nice ring. It should make the lady you're going to ask very happy."

"I hope she says yes." Krycek said.

"With this ring, it makes your love I'm sure look very committed."

"I know that she would like that. I'll take it."

"$2000, sir."

Krycek knew it might hurt his pocket book a bit. He just didn't want to wait. He wanted to get this done with so he could make her his wife.

He laughed inwardly at himself. Imagine him, Alex Krycek, definitely not the marrying type. He always felt like Rhett Butler, the pirate blockcade runner from Gone With the Wind. Not a gentleman by any means.

If anyone of the group was a gentleman he noticed, it had to be John Doggett. He knew that he couldn't even pretend all those things he did for any lady. It wasn't him.

He took the ring box from the clerk. "Thanks."

He walked back out to his car. When he arrived, an unpleasant surprise awaited him. Marita was waiting for him. "Well, well, Alex. Have you found a new woman that you think will make you forget me?"

"I'm not getting into this with you. I've moved on, why can't you?" Krycek growled.

"Because I know you still want me. You crave my excitement. You can't possibly be getting this with your new woman." Marita said with a sneer.

"Maybe I don't want your excitement. Did you ever think that I don't want to be playing a dangerous game all the time?" Krycek said, walking closer to her. He was prepared to strike if necessary.

"Oh, but you do need that danger. You'll grow bored with her, and when you do, I'll be waiting for you.

You've always needed me to be around for that dangerous side."

"Listen to me, and listen very very carefully, Marita: I'm over you. I've moved on, and I no longer need to be consorting with people like you or that old man.

You can forget trying to get me back. I won't have it."

She kissed him forcefully then. "Are you sure?"

"Yes, now get lost." He was angry now. She shouldn't have kissed him like that. He did miss it in some part of himself, but he knew that Jane was right for him, and wouldn't ever use her body against him as Marita just had.

"What, you don't crave more, Alex?"

"No. Now get lost before I do something I'll regret."

"What, sleep with me?"

"No. Kill you."

"Alex, you couldn't kill me if you wanted to."

"Want to make a bet. Do you see this hand? I could easily wrap this one hand around your throat and squeeze the life out of you. Now get lost. I want to go home."

"Fine. But we are not finished yet, Alex Krycek."

Krycek sighed, getting into his car. He hated when that woman did that to him. It was her way of getting the upper hand. He had almost let her get that upper hand again, but he didn't want to risk losing Jane and become lonely all over again.

"God damn that woman! Who does she think she is!"

Krycek muttered to himself as he drove away, home to see Jane and ask her right away, before anything else stupid could happen.

Marita followed him. She wanted to know the competition she was up against. It would make her feel good that she could take away what Krycek was valuing most. She had forgotten how his survival instincts could transfer to others as well. It was a fight she would be sorry for picking if she screwed it up at any point. When Krycek arrived home, he walked into the apartment. He said, "I'm home!"

Jane came out, giving him a kiss. "Welcome home, Alex.

Is there something the matter?" She noticed his unhappy look in his eyes.

"It's not a big deal." Krycek said, sitting down on the couch. He wanted to ask her, but couldn't find the words just yet.

"If you don't want to talk about it right now, that's fine," Jane said, sitting down next to him.

He fumbled around with the ring in his pocket. He pulled the box out, waiting for the right moment to pop the question to her. He had never done that before and he was a little nervous.

He noticed that she had seen what he was doing. She asked, "What are you doing, Alex?"

He decided to take the plunge. "Jane, I have something to ask you. He slid off the couch, facing her on his knees. Though this felt awkward to him, he also noticed that it felt right.

He opened the box, showing her the ring. "Will you marry me, Jane?"

Jane was smiling at him. She had been patiently waiting for him to ask her this important question.

Now he had. It made her incredibly happy.

"Yes. I will marry you, Alex," she said. She watched him slide the ring on her finger.

He got up, kissing her. "You've made me the happiest man alive. I was so afraid that you would refuse. I don't know what I would have done if you would have done that."

She kissed him back, wrapping her arms around his neck. "I could never refuse such a sexy man like you, especially with your leather jacket on and a beautiful ring like that."

He smiled devilishly at her. "I was counting on those very factors."

"I'm sure you were."

Krycek was worried in the back of his mind that Marita would go after Jane soon. He knew that soon this apartment wouldn't be safe for them. He wondered where he would go with her; where would the safest place be?

He sat down next to her, holding her hand. "You know, this apartment might be getting too small."

"Yeah. I noticed that too. It is a bit small," Jane said. She laid her head down on his shoulder, sighing.

"I'm so happy right now."

"I'm glad I could do something to make you happy."

She smiled, snuggling up closer to him. This had been the moment she had been waiting for. It made her happy to know it had arrived.

The next morning, Krycek wanted to start narrowing down his choices for his best man. Jane said she already had a maid of honor picked. She would be another abducted that she was very good friends with.

Now he only had to make his choice.

He went to Mulder's house, thinking maybe he could ask him, and maybe Doggett, and they could help him narrow his search down. He knew that the Lone Gunmen wouldn't accept, or they'd bicker to death, he knew that Skinner would be too awkward, so it was left up to those two.

When he arrived, Mulder and Scully were having breakfast with Samantha and Doggett. The four seemed inseparable most of the time. He knocked on the back of the kitchen door. Mulder got up to let him in.

"What can I do for you, Krycek?"

"I need a best man. I don't know about you, but I'm running short on candidates."

"Oh? Who did you have in mind?" Mulder asked.

"Well, one of you two, actually. I can't pick Skinner, I don't feel comfortable with that. I also can't pick a Gunmen."

"You got that part right. So, one of us?" Mulder asked.

"Congratulations on the engagement, Krycek," Doggett said.

"So, how should we do this, flip a coin, play Eenie Minne Moe, rock paper siscors?" Mulder asked.

"I don't know. What ever you think would work best."

Krycek said, bewildered about Mulder being such a smart ass. He was also concerned about leaving Jane behind unprotected.

Scully said, "I say the man you feel most comfortable with should win."

Krycek didn't know which man he was more comfortable with in all actuality. He still felt like he was on the outside, and besides, Mulder and he had such a twisted history. He also felt odd about Doggett.

Samantha said, "Alright. You obviously don't feel like you are more comfortable with one or the other. I say you try to decide on how you feel it would work out with one man or the other. If you think Fox will be better, choose him, if you think that John will be better, choose him."

"Hmm. That's just the problem. I don't know." Krycek said, confused now. He had never done anything like this before.

"Okay, so we're back to flipping coins and the like," Mulder said.

"Yeah. I guess we could just flip a coin. It might be easier than this." Krycek dug in his pocket for a coin. He found a quarter, handing it to Scully.

Scully said, "What's your call, Mulder?"

Scully flipped the coin up, and it landed on the table as Mulder had called it.

"Looks like you're it, Mulder." Krycek said.

"It'll give me the opportunity to make sure that Sam doesn't have anything happen any ways," Doggett said, trying to make her miffed. He was only kidding.

"John! Be nice now," Samantha said, laughing.

Krycek said, "Thanks. I knew that if I came here, I'd get this mess settled. I want all of us to be there.

Gunmen, Skinner, the works. Let's just hope some others stay away."

"Like?" Mulder asked.

"Marita," Mulder said, "She's causing trouble again?"

"Yeah. She's really gunning to get me back. I don't want to be like that again. I, I must admit I almost broke down and went with her yesterday. I don't know if I wouldn't have had the ring with me just then that I would have controlled myself." Krycek felt guilty about this. He knew that he shouldn't, but he did anyway.

Mulder said, "She lost didn't she?"

"Barely. She uses her body like a weapon. " Krycek spat.

"I'm sure that since you resisted her things will be fine."

"What about next time she tries to do something? What if I can't stop myself?" Krycek felt bewildered. He knew that Marita was wrong for him, and his heart knew, but he was still confused.

"I'm sure you'll know what to do when the time arises, Krycek. You're a different man now," Scully said. She cleared dishes away.

"I hope so." Krycek said.

"I know you will," Samantha said. "You love Jane too much. I can see that here."

Krycek smiled. "Yeah. I guess I do, don't I?" He got up from the stool he was sitting on. "I should be going. I don't want to leave her alone for far too long. Marita might be after her already. I should be there to protect her."

He drove home. He found Jane waiting for him. "So who is it?"

"Mulder. They flipped a coin." Krycek said.

"Yep." He gave her a kiss. "So, what do you want to do today?"

"Hmm, I don't know yet."

"Really? You don't know what you want to do today?" He smiled suggestively at her.

"I think you know what you want to do," Jane said, smiling back at him.

"You bet I do." Krycek said, his smile becoming more devilish by the moment. It was one of his patented smiles that he gave her and her alone. He had never smiled at Marita that way. He still had to tell Jane about Marita, but that could wait.

Later that day, Krycek watched Jane make some lunch.

It was very very domestic, but he enjoyed the scene.

It made him feel more at home. He thought over lunch he'd tell Jane about Marita.

She set the plates of turkey sandwiches down. They sat down to eat. Krycek sighed, "Jane, I have to tell you something."

"What, Alex?"

"You don't know another part of my past. While I worked with the Cancer Man, I was with a woman. Her name is Marita Corrovibus. She and I were in a power struggle. Not just in the conspiracy, but in a personal way."

"What became of her?" Jane asked, looking into Krycek's face. His eyes were full of guilt.

"She showed up yesterday after I bought your ring. She threatened you. Not only did she do that, she used her body against me."

"How?" Jane was afraid that he had done something now.

"Just kissed me. It only made me think about it for a moment. I didn't want to jeopardize anything I have with you. She tried to entrap me into that game we played all the time, and I refused. Please forgive me." Krycek said, looking down.

"For what, for resisting a woman who can sometimes have power over you that you don't choose to let happen to you?" Jane was upset now.

"I don't want you angry with me. I told you because I thought you should know."

"You let her kiss you?" Jane felt the tears well up in her eyes.

"I didn't have much of a choice. Before I knew it she had kissed me." He knew he had screwed everything up.

"You had plenty of choice."

"You don't know Marita."

She turned away from him, when he tried to talk to her face to face. He felt defeated all of the sudden. "I didn't want you to get angry with me if she were to tell you. She'd tell you much worse, and it wouldn't be the truth. I'm sorry."

Jane still didn't look at him. "How could you even think to go with that vixen?"

"It's a long story."

"We have plenty of time. I want to hear it."

"Are you sure?"

He sat back down in the chair. "A few years ago, when I was a double agent, Marita was assigned to work with me to thwart Mulder and Scully. At first we kept our distance, but soon it became this war. A power war to get Cancer Man's favor, and a sex war on the side. I never wanted it, it just happened. Seeing her yesterday did stir up some of those feelings, but when I thought of you at home, I could only feel love for you."

"But you wanted to screw her, didn't you."

He was caught red handed. Yes, she still had the power over him, but he had resisted her, hadn't he? "Yes. I won't lie to you. I just knew that if I did, you'd leave me. I couldn't bear for you to leave me. So I went home and proposed to you as soon as possible. I wanted it to be sealed. I want to be with you for the rest of my life."

She turned a tear streaked face towards him. "Do you mean that?"

"Yes, yes I do. Marita lost. You won. I couldn't love another woman, body or soul ever again. Promise me you'll stop being angry with me."

Jane looked down for a moment. She said, "What if you don't resist her once."

"Like Mulder and Scully and even Samantha told me, I love you too much to do that." Krycek said, softly. He had kneeled down in front of her, taking her hand into his.

She looked up into his face. "You do, don't you?"

"Yes. I don't want Marita, and I'm not a perfect person, but I promise you that I won't be tempted by her anymore. I might have thoughts, but I would never act on them. I'm still moving on in a lot of ways, and I know you're right for me."

"I love you, Alex. I'm glad you told me." She kissed him.

"That was better than the kiss she gave me yesterday.

A million times better."

Later on that week, Krycek and Jane were married.

Krycek was afraid at first, standing waiting for the ceremony to start. It was something he had never dreamed of doing.

Mulder and the maid of honor made their way down the aisle. The maid of honor was a tall, dark haired woman with sparkling green eyes. She was AHH, as she had told Samantha upon seeing her.

The Gunmen and Skinner sat in the front, with Scully, Samantha, and Doggett. Skinner saw the maid of honor, and asked Samantha, "Who is the maid of honor?"

"Janis Fassett. She's AHH and heads up the Resistance in Baltimore. She's tough, many place her in second place to me. She met Jane after an abduction, knowing that Jane was chosen to die. They became good good friends."

Skinner watched her take her place on the bride's side of the altar. The Gunmen were gawking at the dark haired beauty. Frohike knew that he didn't have a chance with her, Langly elbowed him to get him to stop gawking.

Krycek looked antsy at the altar. Mulder whispered to him, before Jane entered. "You'll do fine."

He nodded, hoping he was right. Jane entered finally, and just as she stood in the door way, the sunlight streamed down on her, making her blonde hair shimmer like gold. Her dress was simple, but made her assets stand out. The train was short but not too short. She walked gracefully in it.

Krycek was gawking, he knew he was, but he couldn't help it. She was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his entire life. She smiled brilliantly at him.

The rest of the ceremony was a blur, just as it had been and will always be for all men. Before he knew it, he was allowed to kiss the bride, his bride. Now Marita didn't stand a chance.

He smiled at her when the kiss was broke off. "Now, that kiss was the best kiss I've ever had."

"How do you know you won't be getting more kisses like that? You never know what you can be expecting later."

She raised her eye brows suggestively. "Two can play at this game."

Krycek enjoyed the game with her. He knew that he would have to go to the reception, besides who could miss out on a party that would so much fun.

Mulder gave him a thumbs up when they made it out of the church. Krycek was extremely happy that this had happened. He knew that he had done the right thing.

Now that Jane and he were married, he hoped that Marita would stay out of it. It would make things all that much better in the end.

"Shall we go to the reception?" Krycek asked.

Janis introduced to Krycek. "I see you won my best friend." Her voice was deep and rich.

"Yes, looks like I have." Krycek smiled at her.

Skinner merely wanted to get to the reception to introduce himself to Janis. She looked as confident as Samantha did. He wondered what she was like, and thought he could at least get to know her.

Resist or Die (Part Eight Obstacles and Triumph Author: Cinnamon Scully

They went to the reception, hoping that it would go as smoothly as the wedding had that day. Krycek really hoped so, mainly because he didn't want Jane to see him in one of his worse lights. He would get a little violent if Marita showed, he knew that he would.

Skinner got the courage to introduce himself to Janis. He outstretched his hand to her, "Walter Skinner. I'm the A.D. who works with Mulder, Scully, and Doggett."

"Nice to meet you." She shook his hand, her own shake firm. She said, "So, you met Samantha through her brother?"

"Yes. I've known Agent Mulder for a very long time now. We've been in Samantha's Resistance for awhile now," Skinner said.

"I've always wanted to meet Samantha and Fox. They are quite the legends around the Resistance. I heard about him while I was in Baltimore, and it's always been a dream to meet either one." Her melodious voice was strong and confident.

"I know that Agent Mulder looked for Samantha for years, and I watched that search."

"Ah." Janis didn't know what to think of Skinner. She was trying to figure out how else he was involved in the Resistance.

Krycek was talking to Jane when all of the sudden the reception hall was disturbed. Marita stormed into the hall. "Alex Krycek! I think we have some unfinished business."

Krycek stood up, walking towards her. "I think you're mistaken, Marita. I'm a married man now."

"Married and I'm the Queen of England. You may be legally married, but you'll always be mine where it counts." Marita sneered at him.

Krycek sneered back. "Don't make me do this to you."

"What, show your little wife what you really are? A cheat?"

"You know what I mean. I don't want to be violent." He had lowered his voice so she could only hear. "Marita leave. You don't know what could happen here."

Samantha's blood boiled. She got up, ignoring Doggett's protests. "I believe you should be leaving, miss."

"Who the hell are you?" Marita snapped.

"Who the hell am I? I'm Samantha Mulder, that's the hell who."

"You are not."

"Don't make me angry." Samantha was obviously pregnant now. She made her way slowly towards Marita.

"Alex Krycek, tough man being defended by a pregnant woman who is delusional." Marita laughed for a moment.

It would not last long.

"Listen to me carefully, Marita." She decided to go more direct. She cloaked herself, and spoke from thin air. "I'm an Alien Human Hybrid. You may not be afraid of a pregnant woman, but you will be afraid of an AHH."

Marita's eyes widened. "What are you?"

"Leave, before I show you what else I am capable of."

She forced Marita to move towards the door by making her body disobey her mind. She protested, but eventually was pushed mentally out the door. "Don't disturb this reception again. I don't want to make you very sorry."

Marita did as told. She did have information now, she could get to Cancer Man.

As soon as Marita left, Samantha reappeared, and collapsed to the floor. She was panting. Doggett and Mulder ran towards her. Doggett asked, "Are you okay, Sam?"

Sweat was appearing on her brow. Scully took over the situation. "Take her to a hospital now!"

Doggett easily lifted his wife into his arms. He was very afraid now. If this forced her to miss carry or die he would make someone pay for it.

Meanwhile, Janis and Skinner were talking in another area, away from the action. They had decided to talk to one another, away from everyone else.

Skinner said, "It's been difficult these past few years. The last few months have been the most stressful."

"Yeah. Krycek met Jane when he went on a hunch to save Doggett's life. He knew that if Doggett died of cancer that Samantha would go with him. Those two are very much in love. She was abducted and shortly after she was returned, Cancer Man decided to have Doggett taken."

"That's so sad."

"Yeah, she nearly lost him. I guess when Krycek went up to try his hunch out, he met her, and they shortly after fell in love. It's a tangled web. Enough about all of that, tell me something about you," Skinner said, looking at her tall form sitting not far from his.

"Well, I've been abducted since I was fourteen. I was made AHH not long after my first abduction. When I returned to Earth, I ran away form the ABH guarding me and ran into a MUFON group in Baltimore. The ABH found me, making me return to the ship. That's where I met Jane." Janis's voice was thick with emotion, but she had strength like steel behind her pain.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be. It's the way things are. I can't change them, and neither can you. I make the best of what I have." Janis smiled a brilliant smile at him.

Skinner could see that she was not a weakling by any means. He was sure that if need be she could make any man very afraid of her with only a steely gaze.

He said, "So, what happened when you returned to Earth?"

"We went back to that MUFON group and they tried to hide us as best as they could. She was dying, and I was so very close to her, she's like a sister to me."

"I can see that." He inched closer to her. She noticed, but didn't seem to mind it.

"Watching Jane slowly die and recuperate time and time again nearly broke my heart, but I gathered strength to fight for her," Janis said. She didn't want Skinner to see any weaknesses in her.

He silently took her hand. "You don't have to hide how hard this is. Scully went through the same thing, and I watched with Mulder as she nearly died from cancer.

It's okay to be a bit upset, it's not an easy topic."

"Yeah, it's not." She didn't pull back her hand from his, in fact she seemed to welcome its touch. She looked into his face, her green eyes catching the dim light like a cat's.

"Would you like to go to dinner with me some night?"

Skinner asked suddenly. He thought it would be perfect. Better than being at some one's wedding reception.

"I would like that very much," Janis said. She smiled, and Skinner knew he was lost all of the sudden. This woman could sure stand through anything she wanted to.

His phone rang loudly in the empty hall. "Excuse me, I must take this." He stood up, answering it. "Skinner."

He heard Mulder say in the phone, "Skin Man, we have a problem. Where are you and Janis any ways?"

"What's the problem, Mulder?"

"Samantha. We're taking her to the hospital. Marita upset her when she showed up and Sam over exerted herself."

"I'm on my way." He hung up.

Janis watched him sigh, pocketing his phone. He looked guilty for a moment. "What's wrong?"

"Samantha. She's on her way to the hospital."

"For what? What's the matter?"

"She's pregnant, and she over exerted herself. I figure she used some AHH tricks to scare Marita, the woman who is in pursuit of Krycek. She takes so much responsibility for all of her Resistors."

"She doesn't seem to be the only one who tends to think they are responsible for those below them." She smiled at him. "We should get down there."

When they got to the hospital, Doggett allowed the doctors to take Samantha from him. They took her to the ER right away, to check her out. Doggett watched with fear in his eyes.

Krycek and Jane stood behind him, still dressed for their wedding. They watched him grow worrisome. Mulder said behind them, "She should be fine, she just happened to over extend her energy. I don't think she's ever been pregnant while trying to exert any power like she did. They give her some rest and she should be fine."

Jane saw Skinner and Janis arrive. She said, "Janis, it was terrible."

Janis hugged Jane, trying to calm her down. She then handed Jane over to Krycek. "Alright, until Samantha is back on her feet, I'd like to ask Mulder here if I can take command for a bit."

"Sure. I should keep Doggett from going over the edge from worry any ways."

"Good. Now, I want the wedding couple to go home and change. Avoid the woman who caused this. Come back here once you've done that. I'm going to have to see if her baby is okay myself. I don't trust doctors, especially if they find out her identity and what that baby is."

Doggett turned around. "What do you mean what the baby is," he said it in a tight voice.

"That child is the first AHH born with out testing. If those doctors know what she is, and are in any way connected to the conspiracy, they will kill it."

"Her dream. Oh God. I have to get in there." Doggett was upset now.

"John, what dream?" Scully asked.

"Sam, she dreamt that They would take her baby," Doggett said.

Janis said, "We don't have much time. Scully, Doggett, do you have your weapons handy?"

"Yes." They both responded.

"Mulder, you and I are going in there to see what they are up to. If they are up to something bad, we'll send out a thought to you."

Skinner watched her take over in fascination. She was in command now.

They wouldn't need that signal. Samantha screamed, "JOHN! DON'T TAKE MY BABY, NO!"

Doggett didn't wait, he had his gun drawn and he flew through the door. He wasn't about to let some stupid doctors take his child. He was not about to let a second child go without a fight.

Doggett rushed just in time. He shouted, "F.B.I.! What the hell are you doin' to my wife!"

The doctors looked up in surprise. They were about to do what they had been ordered to do. They were going to cause her to have an abortion.

She screamed, fearing the worse. Doggett slammed one doctor to the floor. Rage had taken over his body now, and he was ready to explode on anyone who got in his way.

He had his gun drawn, ready to fire at anytime.

Another doctor tried to subdue him and he easily punched that guy. Mulder had finally rushed in, helping him take a few more of the doctors out.

Once Doggett had gotten the doctors away from Samantha, he helped her up from the table. The doctor he had slammed down to the floor got up, trying to stop him. He took the butt of his gun, slamming it in to the man's nose.

He lifted Samantha up off the bed, carrying her, while hoping Mulder would stop any attack from his rear. He walked back out, holding Samantha. Scully took his gun from him.

Scully said, "Take her to the car. I'll look at her myself. Obviously we can't trust the hospitals anymore. I'm so sorry this happened."

Doggett sighed. "You got that right." He carried the limp Samantha to the car waiting in the back. He was very very angry about this whole ordeal. It shouldn't have happened that way.

He placed her down gently in the back seat, himself getting in with her. He leaned her up against his shoulder, so that she wouldn't fall. He didn't want her to get worse off than she already was.

[Damn them. Who told them to do that to her?] He looked down at Samantha, touching her face with the back of his hand, to see if she was conscious and to see if she ran a fever. She was hot, fever alright, but not awake.

Scully climbed into the drivers seat. "Mulder said he'll get home with Krycek. I'll take her to your place."

Doggett nodded. He put his arm around her, holding her close. He glared out the window, knowing that the hospital had just tried to kill his child. It made him very very angry.

Scully noticed his sour mood from the back of the seat. "John, she's going to need medical attention some way. We need to do something, or she might miss carry any ways. I don't know what else to tell you."

"I know. That hospital tried to make her miss carry anyway," Doggett said, softly. He didn't want to wake Samantha.

"I'll give her a check over when we get to your place.

I suggest she gets plenty of rest. She wore herself out when Marita showed up," Scully said.

"What was she thinking anyway?" Doggett said.

"Samantha? That she should protect the man who had saved your life. Marita? That she should do whatever she could to get Krycek back," Scully replied.

"I wish Samantha would have let anyone else deal with that situation."

"I know. Let's just get her home," Scully said. When they arrived at home, Doggett carried Samantha up the stairs. He put her in the bed, and Scully came in to check on her. Scully said, "She's exhausted, other than that she's fine. So's the little one. I say we let her sleep the night and check up on her in the morning."

"Sounds good. Thanks for helpin' out," Doggett said.

"Not a problem. Just keep her safe and things should be fine. I'm going to do a back ground check of all hospitals in the area. We should make sure when it's time for the baby to make his or her appearance she's in good hands," Scully said.

"Good idea," Doggett said. He hugged Scully in thanks before she left. Scully smiled at him.

"Remember to keep her safe." Scully left.

Doggett crawled into the bed next to Samantha. He wrapped his arms around her, hoping it would make her feel safer. He whispered, "It's okay, Sam. I'm here, and nothing is going to hurt you now." He heard her sigh contentedly. It made him feel relieved.

He slowly fell asleep, listening to her even breaths in sleep. He snuggled up to her, becoming almost as a blanket to her form. Samantha woke for a moment, hearing his soft snores. It comforted her to hear them. She rolled over, facing him now. She snuggled into his chest, promptly falling back to sleep.

Mulder came to check up on them, now on guard duty on the first shift. He and Scully would alternate. Little John was staying at the Gunmen's. He peeked into the room, seeing them fast asleep. It made him smile. He closed the door.

Scully asked quietly, preparing to sleep on the sofa, "How they doing?"

"Spooned up like baby cats, Scully, spooned up like baby cats," Mulder said with a smile. He saw Scully roll her eyes at his comment. "What? Did I say something wrong?"

"No Mulder. You just will never grow up, that's all."

Mulder put his pouty face on. He said, "What if I did?"

"Then you wouldn't be you," Scully said. She motioned him over. "Give me a good night kiss before I go to sleep."

Mulder obliged her by doing so. He smiled, "Too bad I can't give you more than that, Scully."

Scully hit his arm. "Get your mind out of the gutter."

"Never, Scully, never," Mulder said with a smile. He sat on his watch, while Scully drifted off to sleep.

Meanwhile, Krycek and Jane met Janis and Skinner back at the hospital parking lot. Janis told them what had happened. She said, "I think you two ought to shack up some where else for the night."

"I think so too. Marita is up to something dangerous."

"Hmm, you'll want to be alone, I know that. You drive to my place in D.C. This Marita never even saw me.

I'll go home with Walter here. It seems logical to me," Janis said, eying the newly weds.

Krycek gave her his patented devilish smile. "Why thank you for the generous offer, Miss Fassett."

"Not a problem. I don't seem to have a problem with the whole idea myself," Janis said.

Skinner felt embarrassed suddenly. He saw Jane and Krycek climb into an unmarked car. He refused to drive in a "Just Married" car. He said, "Directions?"

"Here, follow these. I wrote them up before you showed up," Janis said, handing them to Krycek. Krycek nodded his thanks, pulling away.

Skinner said, "So, you're staying with me for the night."

"We're both adults, Walter. Don't be foolish," Janis said, though a smile crossed her lips. She was enticed by him none the less. She wasn't sure if she should let him in on that just yet.

She climbed into the passenger seat of his car.

Skinner sighed. He got into the driver's seat, pulling away, heading home. He wondered what would happen while he was with Janis tonight. Probably nothing but sleep.

When he arrived home, Skinner opened his apartment, letting Janis in before him. She shrugged her coat off, hanging it up. She looked around his apartment, approving of what she saw. He was neat, but not overly neat.

Skinner watched as she sat down on the sofa in his living room. She let out a sigh. "This is a comfortable couch. It has been a long day, hasn't it?"

"Yes, I'd agree with you there. I hope Samantha is fine now."

"With that gentleman to watch her like a hawk? I wouldn't worry. Doggett will keep her safe. He does have a temper, doesn't he?"

"Only if you cross him, it seems. Or rather if you mess with those he loves," Skinner said. He hung up his trench coat next to her small jacket.

He decided to take the plunge and sit down next to her. It was his apartment after all. Why the hell shouldn't he be able to sit on his own sofa in his own apartment.

She opened her eye, and she looked almost feminine. He could only think of Scarlett O'hara. The same features marked her face, but she looked more compassionate than Scarlett ever had. She had that back bone that Scarlett was known for, though. That back bone appealed most to him.

She said, "So, what would you like to do now?"

He wondered what he should say. He knew that he could be entering dangerous ground with his answer. He kept himself under control, answering, "What ever you want to do."

"You're lying."

So she was like Samantha. She could tell you what you were thinking, too. He wondered what he should tell her. "It's partly true."

"Yes, yes it is. You don't want to offend me, do you?" she asked it, sitting forward, her dark hair framing her crystal green eyes and her plump pink lips.

"I don't want to offend you." Skinner was a little lost, simply because he didn't know what she would want from him.

"How about a kiss? You obviously would like to give me one." She title her head, waiting for his answer.

"Would you really want that?" Skinner asked. He had just met this woman, but it wasn't odd for him to kiss a woman he had just met.

"Yes. I would like that very much," she said. Her eyes caught the light like a cat's again. He was reminded of how much she was like a cat again.

He leaned in closer, after he moved down the couch closer to her. He kissed her, slowly at first. He was sure that if he didn't do this right she would get up and leave.

She deepened the kiss instead. "You're not that bad, did you know that?"

Skinner could only smile, before kissing her again.

When Krycek finally found Janis's place, he lead her up to the door. "This is the place, I'd guess." He smiled at her.

They entered the neat apartment. He said, "Sit on the couch." She did as told. As soon as he locked the door, he sat down next to her. He said in Russian, "Ya vas lyublyu. It means I love you."

She was surprised. "What language did you just speak?"

"Russian. I lived there for awhile as a little boy, but I don't speak it very often, except when I'm usually angry or, well like now."

She didn't know what think. "Wow. I don't know any other languages. I guess that's okay."

"Yeah. It's perfectly fine. Not a problem. I just thought I'd share that with you. You know, let you hear Russian."

"I feel like I'm Jane Bond here."

He laughed then. "Perhaps you do. Is that a bad thing?"

"Yes and no."

"Why no?"

"I don't have that suave nature Bond does. I can't just twist anyone around my finger to get them to sleep with me."

"Who said suavity was everything?" He smiled at her.

"Just be you. It would be better than if you were like someone else.

"Definitely." He kissed her. She put her hands on his sides, while he put his hand up to her neck, caressing it as he kissed her. "I think more so. I wouldn't be here right now if you hadn't been the way you are."

"That's a comfort. I'm sure Marita would have tried..."

"Sh, don't mention that woman. Tonight is about us."

He smiled into her face, leaning in for another kiss.

"You're all I want to think about tonight."

Jane smiled back at him when he broke off the kiss.

"That's a comforting thought. I only want to think of you tonight, too. Just think, we're husband and wife now."

"Yes. That's what makes it so exciting, don't you think?" he asked, kissing her neck suddenly. He smiled at her again. He wanted to see her reaction to his move.

She said, "Yes. That is the exciting part. I just hope you don't get bored with me after awhile."

"I could never get bored with you. I want you to know that. Each day I learn something new about you anyway, don't I? I'm going to try to, at least." Krycek kissed her again, moving down to her neck again.

"I hope you accomplish that goal, too," Jane said, gasping suddenly.

"I will, I guarantee that."

The next morning dawned bright and early. Doggett was still asleep when Scully came into check up on Samantha. His soft snores seemed to be coming from her hair, as she had rolled over in her sleep during the night. Scully smiled.

She approached slowly, not wanting to wake them, or startle them for that matter. Some how during the night he had managed to pull a blanket over both of them. She hoped that things would be okay, and that they would stay this peaceful.

She tapped Doggett on the shoulder first, waking him.

"John, I need to see Samantha, see if she's doing okay."

He lifted his head, groggy from sleep. "Alright. I'll wake her." His eyes were still clouded with sleep, and a large yawn escaped him. He touched Samantha's shoulder lightly, tapping her. Samantha woke, rolling over to face him.

Scully said, "Samantha, let me see you for a moment, will you?"

Samantha turned her head back to face Scully. "Sure."

Scully checked her over, looking to see if there was any blood, indicating a miscarriage. She found none.

Then she checked for a fever, finding none. She said, "Things seem to be fine. You just over exerted yourself last night. I say you just rest until your due date, that way your baby survives, alright?"

Samantha yawned. "Yes, Dr. Scully."

Scully smiled. Brother like sister. Both Mulders would always respond that way. She shook her head. "Get some more sleep. I'm sure Mulder will wake and make breakfast a little later. You don't have to be up any ways."

Samantha smiled. She said, "Thank you."

Scully exited the room, leaving an already dozing off Doggett and a happy Samantha behind. Samantha snuggled up to Doggett, sighing. He opened one eye, asking, "What's the matter?"

"Nothing. I'm just happy."

"Oh." He was asleep before she could say anything else. She wondered if she was the one who was exhausted, if he was the one and Scully had it wrong.

He was being cute, she admitted. She fell asleep, listening to his even breathing.

Skinner woke alone in his bedroom the next morning. He had decided to let Janis take the couch, after an argument about who would sleep where. If it had been up to him... He wouldn't think of that now. Rather, he would think of going out to eat, take her out to breakfast. He got dressed, exiting his bedroom to see her up watching the morning news.

"Good. We came off clean, Walter," Janis said, not even turning around to look at him.

"What do you mean?"

"Doggett's Rampage, as I'd like to call it, didn't make the local news. We're in luck there."

"That's good. Would you like to go to breakfast with me?"

Skinner grabbed his coat and waited for her to put her's on. She smiled at him. "Let's go."

Skinner thought about the kiss they had shared the night before. He wondered if it would happen again, or if he should just give up on the whole thing now.

"Give up on what?" Janis said with a smile. She knew what he was thinking.

"Don't go reading other people's minds. It's sort of rude," Skinner said, trying to be angry. It didn't work.

"I can't help that you're thinking too loudly," Janis said. "Besides, I wouldn't give up just yet any ways.

You never know what surprised could be in store for you."

Skinner had to smile at that one. They walked out to the car parked in the lot by his building. He let her get in, and he pulled away to go to the restaurant.

When they arrived, Skinner said, "Well, let's go in.

I'm absolutely famished."

"Me too."

When they got inside, they were seated. Skinner asked her, "So, do you think we should check up on Samantha?"

"I think so, but if anything new would have come up, I think they might have told us by now," Janis said, her green eyes pinning him.

He nodded, looking at his menu, trying to decide what he wanted for breakfast. He finally decided upon having the steak and eggs meal. Janis selected an omelette with a side of pancakes.

She said, "Walter, you're avoiding a subject again."

"Oh?" He wanted to sound more confident than he felt.

He knew that she was pretty and strong, but he didn't know if she liked him the way he obviously liked her.

"You know the topic I'm talking about," Janis said.

"You mean the kiss we had last night?" He jumped right in for the kill.

"Yes. That is what I'm talking about," Janis said.

"What about it?"

"How about later we try that again? Like I said, don't give up just yet." Janis looked at him with sparkling green eyes.

He smiled back at her. "Fine, I won't then. I don't think I can just give up that easily."

"Good. I wouldn't want you to." She smiled at him, waiting for her food to arrive.

The Lone Gunmen decided they would stop by to see if Samantha was alright, and reunite Little John with his parents. They bickered the entire way, and when they arrived, Langly was already crabby.

Frohike knocked on the door, Scully answering. "Why hello Agent Scully." Frohike put on his best smile.

Scully rolled her eyes. "Come on in. Be quiet. They are still asleep upstairs.

The Gunmen entered the house, going to the kitchen.

They sat down at the table, where Mulder sat, drinking coffee trying to stay awake, but looked as if he was not succeeding very well.

Frohike clapped him on the back, and Mulder glared at him. Langly said, "Good one, Dohike. Make him even more crabby."

"What do you three want?" Mulder said, his voice tired.

"We brought Little John back. Thought you might want him around."

"Thanks." Mulder never made it to sleep. He stayed up with Scully on her watch, unable to sleep. Now he felt like he could sleep forever. He was ready to drop.

Suddenly the phone rang, making Mulder jump. He answered it, "Doggett's Residence."

Krycek asked, "How's Samantha, Mulder?"

"Sleeping like I should be."

"You sound tired."

"Didn't sleep last night."

"Someone show up?"

"Is Doggett awake?"

"No, he and Samantha are sleeping still. Scully said that she wondered if she was looking over the right person. Doggett looked positively exhausted, or he was just being lazy."

"I'll take the second part over the first any day.

Jane and I were going to stop by later on, if that was alright."

"It should be fine."

"Go to bed, Mulder. I'm sure Scully will tell you the same thing."

"Alright, mother hen." Mulder hung up, looking at the Gunmen standing there for a moment. "Sit down or something. You're creeping me out standing there like that."

Scully came in. "Mulder, go to that couch and sleep now."

Mulder smiled weakly at her. He said, "Alright, I'm going. I don't want you three to be bickering, do you hear me. I want to sleep."

The Gunmen nodded. Mulder got up from the table, giving Scully a quick kiss as he went by. He climbed onto the sofa, literally collapsing onto it, asleep as soon as he was laid down.

Just as he fell asleep, Doggett and Samantha made their way down the stairs. Samantha made sure that Doggett was quiet. She said, "Fox is sleeping. Let's be quiet."

Doggett nodded. He saw Mulder's arm hanging over the edge, and his long form in a comfortable position he knew he couldn't have found while he tried to sleep on the thing.

They entered the kitchen, finding the Gunmen there.

Doggett said softly, "When did you three arrive?"

"Just before you two lazy people got up," Frohike said.

Marita was speaking with the Cancer Man. "That stupid Alex left me for another woman."

Cancer Man looked amused by her tirade. He emitted a puff of smoke, saying, "You know, I have a plan to get Samantha Mulder back. I need her to make the perfect AHH. I can get Krycek too, if you would like."

Marita turned around. "You mean that witch that told me to get lost at Alex's wedding reception. Is that what she is, for real? She said she was."

"Yes. The plan I have will stretch your patience level, but you can handle it for the sweet honey it will bring, can't you?" Cancer Man let another puff of smoke go.

"What is your plan?"

"The ABH I have says that we can get a hold of Samantha Mulder in a few years. He can make something happen. She'll make a mistake. We get them the Earth born AHH with out testing, and they'll give us what we want."

"Why the time lapse?"

"He said something about how if they didn't do things that way, they would end up losing their best test subject ever. That would be Samantha Mulder, I'm assuming."

"I see. So, we wait a few years. She thinks things are okay, we abduct the kid, and she follows right into the trap we've set for her. I like it. Now, how do we throw Alex into the mess?"

"He'll try to help her find her child. You know that he will. He'll step up saying he knows the most about us, and he'll come to get the child, before she can get upset."

"I see." Marita said. She narrowed her eyes. "This had better work, old man, or so help me God. I will kill you for the failure."

"So much like Alex. You won't kill me anymore than he could. He threatened me much the same way you just did, and it never went anywhere."

"I'm different, old man. I don't need you like he did.

Like I am his weakness, so are you." Marita said, glaring at the Cancer Man.

"We'll see about that. I think you have a lot of promise, as long as you keep yourself under control."

Cancer Man said, walking swiftly away. He didn't want to hear any more crazy plots from the woman.

A couple of months later, it happened. Samantha woke one morning, early. "John, it's time."

Doggett woke, quickly. He asked excitedly, "Are you sure?"

"Most definitely." She heaved as a contraction hit her. "I have to get to the hospital now!" She let a scream go, and bit her lip.

Doggett got up, dressing quickly. He helped Samantha up from the bed. She pulled all of her instincts that she had from the testing to mind. She would no longer feel any pain.

They made it to the car, and Doggett got in, speeding down the street. He asked, "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine, John. Just hurry."

Doggett pulled into the hospital, yelling at personnel. "My wife is in labor! Get a doctor now!"

The nurses disbanded like a flock of birds, going off into different directions. Doggett helped her along until a nurse brought a gurney to place her onto it.

Doggett had remembered his cell phone. As the wheeled Samantha away, and as he ran along side of her, he called Mulder and Scully to tell them the news.

"Samantha's going to have the baby now!" Mulder asked, "We'll be right down. I know Scully wants to make sure the hospital is still safe. Stay with her."

"I will." He hung up, getting into scrubs. He stood by Samantha and she squeezed his hand from time to time.

It wasn't too bad and her eyes were clouded, with what he thought for a moment looked like Black Oil. He assumed she used it to block pain.

Mulder and Scully rushed to the hospital, standing outside. Mulder was anxious. Scully was happy. They went inside, scrubbing up. Samantha was quiet, and Scully said, "What's wrong?"

Doggett said, "It's an AHH thing, I'm guessing."

Scully nodded. She watched the doctors deliver the easy birth. A son was suddenly held up for all to see.

Doggett saw the film quickly slide from Samantha's eyes. She smiled up at him. "The first Earth-born AHH to be born to an AHH mother."

He smiled back at her, holding her hand. She asked, "Can I see my baby?"

The doctors finished cleaning up the infant. They handed the baby to Samantha. The doctors would not remember any part of the way Samantha was during the birth. She had already made up new memories for them.

She looked into her son's tiny face. She said, "Why hello there, Andrew John Doggett." The baby opened his newborn eyes, and looked up to his mother. He did the extraordinary then. [Hello Mother.] Samantha looked up into Doggett's shocked face. He had heard his son think to Samantha. Samantha handed the child to Doggett.

Doggett looked into his son's face. He noticed right away the intelligence. He was still shaken by the fact that his son could telepathically speak already.

Samantha said, "He was born that way. I figure he was watching us all that time, learning the language, knowing his telepathic communication would be all he had for awhile."

Doggett smiled at her. "Well, if anything, he's got my eyes and my nose." He turned to Mulder and Scully.

"Meet Andrew John Doggett." His face was of pure fatherhood. Scully could only smile at him with his new son.
