Title: Hootie III. Hold My Hand Summary: "With a little love, and some tenderness. We'll walk upon the water. We'll rise above this mess." ~ Sequel to Hootie 1. Only Lonely and Hootie 2. I Will Wait. Notes: This is the third fic in the "Hootie" Series. The first two are Only Lonely and I Will Wait. Read those before you read this one. Thanks: to everyone who emailed me with their various comments and all around "urging" to do another fic. Scully gasped. Mulder was here, right in front of her. No, it couldn't be him. Mulder would know better than to risk their lives this way. Her arms tightened around William as she backed away from the man in front to her. "Scully," he whispered, reaching out an arm to steady her as she stumbled. "Don't touch me," she snapped, moving William to where the intruder would have to go through her to get the baby. William protested loudly at being held in such a tight, oppressive embrace. She rubbed his back to comfort him. "Scully, please, it's me," Mulder pleaded, his voice soft. "Mulder," her voice caught. "You shouldn't be here. It's not safe." "I don't care anymore, Scully. This isn't worth it," Mulder stepped closer slowly. With gentle, unthreatening fingers, he released her tight grip on the baby and gathered him into his arms. "Don't cry," he whispered, looking at Scully and finding tears glistening in her eyes as well. "Scully, please. Come here." Scully's arms were around him before he could even finish the sentence. He cradled her head against his shoulder with one hand and kept a tight hold on William with the other. "I wasn't going to do it anymore, Scully. I woke up this morning and couldn't. We've never run from danger, and I'm damn well not about to start now. I'm not going to miss anymore of my son's life, and I'm not going to let you raise him alone." "It's not going to matter if you're dead," Scully retorted taking William away from him. He reached for the baby again, but Scully held him away. "Dammit Scully. Let me hold my own child. I'll go if you want me to, just let me hold him for five fucking minutes." Scully looked uncertainly at the baby, as if she were afraid for his safety. 'How could he be unsafe?' she thought, 'Mulder's his father. He won't hurt him.' Coming to this conclusion, she passed William over to Mulder. "Well, hey buddy," Mulder cooed softly, taking the pad of his finger and wiping William's tear-lined face. "I bet you're wondering who this strange person who's holding you is." "No he doesn't," Scully's voice was soft to his right. She appeared beside the baby and stroked his cheek gently. "He knows who his daddy is. Don't you sweetheart?" she looked at Mulder, "he should be getting ready to nap. That's why he's cranky." "Should, should I put him down?" Mulder asked uncertainly. Scully shook her head. "Go sit with him on the couch." Mulder complied and settled with William. Scully cautiously lowered herself next to them. Mulder continued to rub his son's back until William drifted off. He looked down at the baby, simply watching him sleep. After a few minutes, Mulder cleared his throat. "I'll, I'll just put him down and go," he whispered reluctantly. "No, you don't have to do that," Scully interrupted. "I mean, it's okay for you to stay. If you think it's safe." Mulder nodded dumbly. Clutching William to him tightly, he made his way into the nursery that he himself had helped paint and wallpaper. Looking around the room, Mulder placed William down in the crib that had been his as a baby. Scully had been insistent that he get it out of the storage container he'd put the rest of his mother's things into. She said she wanted their son to sleep in his father's crib. Mulder looked down at William. The baby's lips were pursed in sleep. Mulder wondered what he dreamed about. If his dreams were peaceful. He hoped that they were. Scully appeared at Mulder's side. His instinct was to wrap an arm around her waist. To hold her close like she was the mother of his child. Not like his still-estranged lover. Much to his surprise, Scully did it first. Her body was suddenly pressed against his own. He stiffened, but relaxed quickly, and his arm found it's way around her. She sighed and rested her head on his shoulder. "Scully-" he started. "Shh," she placed a finger against his lips. "Just, shut up. I don't care why you're here. You're here." Mulder turned and faced her. He looked at her for permission before leaning down and capturing her lips with hers. She responded with zeal and in an effort for not to wake the baby, she pulled him from the room and toward her bedroom. Mulder stopped in the doorway and pulled her close again. "It's been so long Scully," he murmured into her hair. "I know," she rubbed his back, wanting to soothe his tears. "I know, Mulder." Mulder pulled away and kissed her again. One hand tugged off her jacket while the other held her head in place as their lips clashed together. She helped him pull off his t-shirt and ran her hands appreciatively over his torso. As tenderly as he could, he undid the buttons on her shirt. She stopped him; her hands cool against his flesh. "We have at least an hour before William wakes up. I'm not going anywhere." "Let me make it up to you?" he asked. "Make what up to me?" she asked, confused. "Everything," he bent his head to kiss her again, his hands spurring into action and quickly divesting her of her clothes. Scully smiled into his mouth and peeled his clothing from his body as well. They fell back onto the bed, Scully taking the lead and kissing her way up and down Mulder's body. Mulder shuddered and pulled her up for a kiss. Their hands joined as they frantically explored the other's mouth. Scully was the first to gasp for air. She rolled, pulling Mulder on top of her. She arched into his body, craving the feel of him. "Mulder-" she gasped, "please." "Please what Scully?" "Mulder, don't tease. You know what I want." Mulder licked her shoulder, "That is?" "You," she panted. He nodded and kissed her again. Hard met soft. Steel became molten liquid. Scully clutched at Mulder's shoulders, a sob building up in her throat. Mulder kissed her gently, trying to prolong his body's stamina. Scully cried out and Mulder crushed their lips together so she wouldn't wake the baby. "Mulder," she panted, "let go. It's okay to let go. Come for me." Mulder buried his face in her neck, his body shuddering as he collapsed. Scully kissed his temple and waited for her breathing to return to normal. No sooner had that occurred than William let out a hearty wail. "Maybe he's just," Mulder began. He was interrupted by William's cry again. "Okay, I'll get him. Stay here," he rolled out of bed, grabbing the first piece of cloth he saw. Scully laughed, and he looked down; he'd taken her pants and had started to slip them on. "Here," she sat up, holding the sheet to her front and located his boxers. He grabbed them quickly from her and left the room. She heard him speaking in a low voice to William, comforting their son. He returned a few moments later, his arms supporting William, who's head lolled against his shoulder. "Is it okay to bring him back in here?" Scully nodded, still in bed. Her legs hadn't rediscovered the ability to walk quite yet. Mulder crossed over to the bed, passing her his t-shirt to put on before settling in with his back against the headboard of her bed. Scully ran her hand down William's back. She was almost happy that Mulder had brought the baby with him; it would make it easier for them to not talk, to pretend that this was the way it had always been. To pretend that Mulder wouldn't have to leave again. "Scully," Mulder started, unsure of what he would say. "Don't," she ordered, "just don't," she whispered, still focused on her son. Mulder shut up, pulling her close and kissing her lips tenderly. He hoped that even with the silence, his actions would speak for him. And that's the end, folks! No more. This trilogy has run its course, and only a personal visit from Mr. David Duchovny himself will persuade me to write another.
