Title: A Day At Six Flags This is my very first fiction story, in response to a summer writing challenge issued on the Scuttlebutts group. Thanks Perri. All original characters are the copyrighted property of kimo-sabe. I. July 1 Walter Skinner stood looking out his office window. The late-afternoon sun cut through the blinds painting horizontal lines across his crisp white shirt. God it's hot out there, he thought to himself and smiled. Not as hot as Texas. Still smiling to himself he glanced back down at the paper on his desk and signed the vacation request form swiftly with his bold scrawl. There. Everything else could wait a week. Grabbing his suit jacket off his chair and snapping his briefcase closed, he strode through his office door, handing the form to his secretary as he passed her desk. "Kimberly, be sure Agent Scully gets this today, and I'm leaving now. See you when I get back." He grinned at the unbelieving look on her face. She probably thought he really wouldn't go. Vacation and AD Skinner just didn't belong in the same sentence. Skinner pulled out of the FBI garage with a sigh. When Jake had called to invite him to spend the Fourth of July with his family down on his ranch near Dallas, his gut reaction was No Way. Then two miracles happened. One, Mulder had once again landed himself in the hospital as a result of his latest 'case' and wouldn't be discharged for two more weeks. Two, Scully had requested a vacation to attend a cousin's wedding, and wouldn't be back till the 9th. No need for his physical presence at the JEH when the two agents that required it wouldn't even be there. And by God, he needed a vacation. He needed a break from the FBI, specifically wild x-file reports, Mulder and his escapades, and yes, he had to admit it. From one Special Agent Dana Katherine Scully. Looking at the signed form, Dana Scully blinked twice. Wow. That was easy. She'd been sure that with Mulder in the hospital, Skinner would want her to be in the office to cover the X-Files. Absently running her finger over the strong signature, she thought about the last time she was in his office. The sun had shown through his shirt outlining a torso that took her breath away. He had paced back and forth trying to understand the bizarre set of circumstances that had ended up with Mulder in the hospital yet again. She'd tried to answer his questions, but couldn't seem to focus on anything but his strong chest, powerful arms and slim hips. God she needed a vacation. Lusting after her boss was clearly a sign she was overworked and had no life. Her cousin Teresa's wedding was just the excuse she needed to get away from the FBI, Mulder and his quest, and yes, she had to admit it. From one Assistant Director Walter S. Skinner. July 2 As Skinner approached Jake's ranch house, memories of his childhood flooded through him. Just one year younger than Jake and living next door, they naturally had become fast childhood friends. His lips turned up as he thought about the trouble they had gotten into. Way more than either of their parents wanted to remember, he was sure. He looked towards the rise on the south side of the ranch where his family had lived so long ago. His thoughts didn't linger that direction, though, for it was the house before him that he regarded with such fondness. He'd practically moved in when his parents divorced. Jake was the brother he never had, and it was good, very good, to be home. "Hey guy!" His friend said, slapping Skinner on the back as he greeted him on the front porch. From around the corner, two tall teenagers came jogging up to them. My God! "These can't be Cody and Kyle?" Skinner said, incredulous. How long had it been? "Yep. Kyle, Cody, don't you remember Walter?" Jake said, laughing. He knew full well they wouldn't remember him, except from the photos lining the family room wall. Skinner shook each of their hands before grabbing them in an unexpected show of emotion. The last time he'd seen his best friend's sons they'd been about three years old. "How old are you guys now?" he asked. "Sixteen - almost seventeen, sir. And I'm Cody," the tall boy on his left said, brushing his dark hair from his damp brow. "And I'm Kyle," said the twin on the right, smiling, his blue eyes shining. He knew Walter wouldn't be able to tell them apart. "Well, it's great to see y-all again!" Skinner said. "Now, can we get out of this god-awful heat?" He followed as Jake led the way into the coolness of the house. Thank God for air conditioning, Skinner thought. Wiping at the sweat across his brow, he asked the boys what they'd been up to since school got out. Were they driving yet? "Nah. Dad won't let us get our license till we're seventeen!" Cody complained. "You got enough going with school, football and chores, boy," his dad said with a smile. "No need to tempt you to shirk your responsibilities with a car." "But, Dad-" Kyle started, but was interrupted. "Kyle. We've had this discussion already, and we are not going to have it again in front of Walter." End of discussion. The boys knew that tone. Skinner caught himself staring at the three of them. Although it was getting near supper time, the pain he felt in his gut had nothing to do with hunger. Family. God he missed having a real home. Scully got off the plane at DFW and headed for baggage claim. She could see the hot Texas sun shining through the windows and knew it was ghastly out there. The Caribbean would have been better, Scully thought. But the wedding was here, so here she was. And on vacation. She was going to make the most of this trip, even if the heat killed her. "C'mon, Walter! You've got nothing else to do,pleaded the twins, almost in unison. "It'll be fun!" Skinner just shook his head and grinned. Six Flags? An amusement park? He knew that went together with AD Skinner as well as 'vacation'. But what the hell. He *was* on vacation and he was going to have fun, damn-it. "Okay, guys, I give! I'll drive you up to the park tomorrow, and I promise to even go on a ride or two. Will that do?" "YES!" they said in tandem. "C'mon, Dana!" the girls cried together. "It'll be fun!" Scully couldn't believe she was even contemplating going out in the Texas heat - and for a whole day! Teresa and the bridesmaids had all decided on a trip to Six Flags, one last fun day with her lady friends before she tied the knot. "Dana, you can wear your swimsuit and shorts, a tank top, and all the sunblock we can carry. Please? It won't be right if we go without you!" Teresa said, hooking her arm around Dana's. Dana smiled at Teresa, knowing her cousin didn't want to think about her sitting around the hotel, alone, while the rest of them had fun. "Oh, what the hell. I'll go. Just promise me you won't let me melt!" Scully said, laughing. An amusement park? How long since she'd just had fun? Suddenly she was excited about just being Dana. Not Agent Scully. Not Scully. Dana. She could barely wait for tomorrow, now. It promised to be a very good day. II. July 3 Scully stared at the torture chamber with her mouth hanging open. "You're not serious," she exclaimed as her friends headed for the entrance of a ride that had no other motivation than to make a person puke. "But the Sombrero is a great ride, Dana!" said Mary, pulling on Scully's arm. Looking at the huge Mexican hat that twirled and tilted, Scully swore she saw the current passengers turn various shades of green with each pass around the ride. "NO freaking way. You four go ahead and have fun. I'll sit this one out," she said firmly, her jaw set. Teresa knew that look and said, "C'mon ladies,Dana, we'll see you in what? About 45 minutes?" "That sounds about right, " Scully agreed, assessing the long queue line that wound itself back and forth. Sheesh. Why they decided to go to Six Flags on a holiday weekend was beyond her. Oh yeah. They had shamed, cajoled and finally forced her into it with an hour of begging and pleading. She checked her watch,"Okay, I'll see you around noon, why don't we eat lunch over there, that is if you think you can eat after that." Scully smiled as she watched the girls run to the line. Teresa was glowing -- whether it was from having fun with her friends, or anticipation of her upcoming wedding, Scully wasn't sure, but she was happy for her cousin either way. Her bridesmaids were friendly, and although Scully was definitely feeling like the odd man out, they were doing their best to make her feel welcome and wanted. It was obvious that Mary was Teresa's best friend, and she had learned that Julia and Robin had known each other since high school. They quite naturally paired up for all the rides, and Scully had to put down her disappointment that she had no one to share her ride experiences with. Why were all the rides two-seaters? Always honest with herself, she had to admit she was beginning to have some real fun. Grinning, she remembered the Judge Roy Scream coaster they had made her ride as soon as they'd entered the park. And, yes, she had screamed. Calm, and always collected Special Agent Scully had shrieked like the girl she was and with all her being. Flukemen, aliens and cancer had never shaken her cool, but one huge, white, wooden rollercoaster had transported her back to her youth with the first plunge, the car picking up speed to at least 50 mph. After that, they had strolled back toward the entrance, deciding to travel clockwise around the park. The Wildcatter was tame after the Judge, and Scully smiled again, she was having a good time and she felt relaxed. Isn't that what vacations were for? Despite the Texas heat, which she could feel growing with each minute that passed, she knew her cousin had been right. Much better than sitting around the hotel all day. In fact, she hadn't thought of Mulder or a single x-file since she got to the park. She shook her head. The same could not be said of her boss, Walter Skinner. I wonder what he's doing for the Fourth? Did he even have someone to spend the holiday with? Family? Friends? With her thoughts lingering on a man 1300 miles away, she headed back towards the entrance and the locker that held her sunscreen. Better reapply, she thought to herself, before she started to burn. In shorts and a tank top, she knew she had way too much skin exposed to the blazing sun. She'd taken her cousin's advice and chosen to wear her bikini as underwear, knowing the park had water rides. So far, she hadn't been too uncomfortable in the humid 90 degree heat. Washington, D.C., had heat indexes, but she knew they didn't really compare to what the Lone Star State called a heat index. Glancing at the huge water fountain near the entry gate, she turned right, and quickly found her locker. Please, God, don't let me cook today, she prayed silently, smoothing the lotion over her shoulders, arms, face and neck. Satisfied she wouldn't burn, well, at least not anytime soon, she pulled her sunglasses back into place and headed out of the shade provided for the locker area. Two steps into the sunshine, she froze. No. Way. "Hey, wait up you two," Skinner called, watching the twins break into a sprint for their favorite ride. "C'mon, Walter! It's already after 11:00 and we want to get to the Giant before the line really gets long," Kyle said, trying to pull away from his brother, Cody, who had hold of his arm, making him wait for Walter to catch up. "All right. You two can go on ahead. I'll wait for you by the exit," Skinner said, grinning. He'd already figured the boys would pair up and leave him to himself. He didn't mind. Playing chauffeur for his best friends sons, and hanging out in the sunshine all day could be relaxing, and that's all he wanted to do. Relax. Forget all about the x-files, Mulder and one stunning redhead who filled up way too many of his waking thoughts. Stowing their gear in the locker, Skinner donned the baseball hat and sunglasses he'd brought to the park, his only concession to the sweltering heat of Texas. In cargo shorts, tank top and tennis shoes, he was comfortable. No need for sunscreen as he was already bronzed from a few weekends in the sun back home. Looking down at the park map he had in his hands, he located the route that would take him to the Giant. Glancing around the entrance courtyard, he took in the merry-go-round pavilion, the food kiosks, gift shop and water fountains, noting that the crowd was already thick, this being a holiday weekend. He figured he had maybe an hour before they'd exit the ride. Wandering over to the large fountain area, he bent over, resting his elbows on the iron railing. Focusing on the water spraying up in front of him, he watched the light bounce and reflect in every direction. The blue water pooling around the bottom of the fountain reminded him of Scully's eyes, eyes that changed intensities, reflecting her moods. Of course his mind had to go there again. He just couldn't stop himself. She'd asked for vacation to attend a cousin's wedding. Was she a guest? Or was she a bridesmaid? Either way, he knew she'd be the most beautiful woman in attendance. God. When had it gotten so bad? When had his feelings for her deepened beyond respect and friendship? Was it during her cancer or before? Didn't matter. She was off-limits. A subordinate. Forbidden. Shaking himself out of his reverie, he pressed his lips together in irritation with himself. Shit. He took one last look around the courtyard, surveying the people with grim regard. He idly wondered if they were truly as innocent as they looked. Did any of them have evil on their mind, evil plans in their heart? Realizing he had assumed his AD posture, he quickly turned and strode across the courtyard, heading for the Giant. Damn. Couldn't he just be Walter for one stinking day? Why did his habitual training have to follow him here- - an amusement park for God's sake. Taking long purposeful strides, he wondered when he'd stopped being Walter, somehow transformed into an Assistant Director of the FBI - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Well, to hell with that, he thought. I'm not just an AD. I'm a man. And today I'm going to pretend there is no FBI, no J-O-B at all. And especially no D-A-N-A Scully. Spying an ice cream kiosk, he came to an abrupt stop. Just the ticket. What could be more refreshing than ice cream on a hot summer day? The fun starts now. Scully had to tell herself to take a breath. That couldn't be him. Skinner was miles away, miles and miles away. There was no way he could be that man standing over there by the fountain. Her eyes took in the broad shoulders, slim hips and long bronzed legs. The baseball cap hid his head, so she couldn't be sure, at least not until he turned around. My God. What a handsome man. Was anyone with him? Maybe she could just go stand next to him and see if he looked at her with interest or not. So why couldn't she move her legs? She watched him shift his weight from one foot to another as he studied the water spraying into the air. Okay. Nice rear, too. Very nice. Now what? C'mon, Dana, think! Move! Do something! She certainly didn't want him to catch her standing there, staring at him with her mouth hanging open, but she just wasn't ready to stop admiring the stunning masculine physique before her. Curious and somehow exhilarated, she made a quick, impulsive decision. Ducking into the gift shop, she peered through the window, hidden by t-shirts and souvenir cups on display. Mentally shaking her head, she couldn't quite believe she was going to do this, but heck. She was determined to enjoy herself today, and a little indulgence was okay, especially on a vacation, right? His shoulders and biceps were a great place to start, she admired, letting her gaze linger on the tanned skin of his arms. Surely this man had to be with someone here, some lucky lady had to have snapped him up years ago. Then where was she? If he were my guy, I wouldHer musings were cut short when the man suddenly turned towards his left, and she got her first clear view of his profile. Although the sunglasses hid his eyes from view, there was absolutely no mistaking that nose and strong chin. "Oh. My. God." How could it be him? It can't be him. No, it is him! Look at that walk, that tense jaw, jeez. Didn't the man ever relax? Unable to pull her eyes from him, she watched as he visibly shook himself, as if even he realized his behavior was at odds with his surroundings. Seeing his lips turn up at the corners, she knew when he made some sort of decision, could feel the determination in him as he strode across the courtyard towards her left. Where was he going? Why was he in a hurry? What the HELL was he doing *here*? Crossing through the gift shop, bumping a display (thank God it didn't fall over), Scully found herself out the door and following him, unwilling not to have her questions answered. Should she say hi? No, she knew she'd sound stupid no matter what she said after oogling his body the way she had, correction, *was*. Shit. What to do? When Skinner stopped to get an ice cream, she just managed to hide behind a lemonade stand. Ice cream? AD Skinner and ice cream. Somehow that just didn't fit the image she of him. But what about the man inside the crisp white shirts and gray suits she was accustomed to seeing? The person before her was most definitely the *man, not her surly boss. And What a Man, she almost said out loud. Okay, so he's your boss. So what? He didn't know she was watching, okay, lusting, she could not deny her reaction to him was strong. When he started to walk away, casually licking his ice cream, Scully decided to shadow him for a just a little while. She just had to know who he was here with. Ignoring the warning in her conscience about possibly spying into her boss's private life, she waited till he was a good 20 paces ahead before venturing forth on what was probably the most rash thing she'd ever done. III. Cursing her short legs, Scully found she practically had to jog to keep up with Skinner as he traversed the park towards wherever he was going. Sweat began to form on her brow and the back of her neck as the heat index grew now that it was approaching lunchtime. Dodging around a married couple with two kids in tow, Scully was grateful the man she was tailing was tall. At six feet-two, she could see his head sticking up from the thick holiday crowd about 40 feet in front of her. Where was he going? They'd already passed several rides, restaurants and specialty stores. They'd even passed two restrooms, she grinned, her FBI skills of observation would never take a vacation being too ingrained into who she was. Scully slowed her pace as she observed Skinner's posture change, and watched as he carefully turned his head from left to right. Skinner took the last bite of cone left over from his ice cream and licked his fingers with satisfaction. Oh, yes. That was a perfect way to start a vacation. He glanced left to right trying to locate a trash can for the used napkins in his hand, and suddenly squared his shoulders and stiffened his gate. He was being followed. All his instincts, honed from his years as a marine and two decades as an FBI agent, came into play as he once again found himself in 'AD mode'. What the hell? Turning very slowly around all he could see was an endless mass of people ebbing and flowing around him enjoying their day at the park. There was nothing visible to him to explain what he knew to be true. Scully barely had time to hide behind a t-shirt kiosk, when Skinner turned around completely, right in the middle of the crowd. What was he doing? Crouching a little, Skinner made himself just a little shorter than the people around him, took three steps forward and seeing a gap in the crowd, quickly ducked left into the space between two of the souvenir stores that lined the walkway. Flattening his body against the wall, he kept his eyes focused on the people passing by. He waited. Glancing around a t-shirt on display, Scully felt a disappointing lurch in her stomach. She lost him! Where'd he go? It'd only been two or three seconds since she saw him turn around. She quickened her pace and made her way to the spot she'd seen him last, looking back and forth all the way there. Damn! She went a little further down the walkway. Laughing at herself, she realized it was futile. There were just too many people here today. What was she thinking anyways? What would she say if she did catch up with him? Checking her watch, she laughed again as she turned and made her way back to the food stand for lunch. A flash of sunlight glinting off red hair caught Skinner's eye as a petite woman walked quickly past his view. Scully? No, it couldn't be. First he couldn't keep his thoughts away from her, now he was hallucinating. He rested his head against the side of the building and shook his head. Lord, he had it bad. Straightening, he turned to step out from between the buildings when the red-haired woman strode back past him. No. Yes? She'd been wearing sunglasses, but there was something about that smile, What if it was her? Skinner checked his watch quickly, he had time. On impulse, Skinner moved to follow her, and prayed she wasn't a figment of his imagination. Keeping fairly close so he wouldn't lose her in the press of people around them, Skinner began to believe his eyes. This was Scully. No. This was Dana. Before him was the woman under the business suits and professional manner. As she strolled ahead of him, he let his eyes wander down, taking in the light blue tank top that complimented her wondrous hair and creamy skin. Further down, her denim shorts looked comfortable, accentuating her shapely hips without being too tight. He noted that she was shorter than he was used to, wearing tennis shoes at the end of a pair of very nice legs. A flash of color at her neck told him she was wearing a bathing suit under her top, and he felt a familiar tightening in his gut as he realized she was wearing a bikini under her clothes. Get a grip, Walter, he admonished himself. He watched as she made her way to a food stand with patio tables situated under shade tarps. Leaning against a sign advertising a bobsled ride, he waited while she stood in line to order a refreshment, and pondered his approach. There was no way he was going to pass up this opportunity. Ice cold bottled water in hand, Scully sat at the patio table closest to the Sombrero and waited for the girls to exit the ride. Absently rubbing the chilled bottle across her throat, she sighed as it cooled her heated skin. She couldn't tell if she was flushed from the heat of the day or the exertion of that fruitless chase after her boss. Perching her sunglasses on top of her head, she pondered who he might be with and where he was going, knowing she'd probably never know. Damn! Skinner stepped up behind Scully as she took a swig of water. A faint odor of sunscreen lotion and perspiration lifted off her shoulders, and he knew he'd never smelled anything so fine. Taking a deep breath, he swallowed before he spoke. "Agent Scully?" The low rumble of her name just behind her made Scully jump. She twisted her head around to look way up at the source. "S-Sir?" she answered out of reflex. She stared at him as he walked around in front of her to the other side of the table. My God. He's simply beautiful, she thought. Taking in his broad chest, she noted that the light yellow tank top he wore accentuated his strong shoulders and tanned skin perfectly. Her gaze trailed down to take in his flat stomach and trim hips covered in tan cargo shorts. The table was blocking most of her view of his legs, but she knew they'd be tan, long and lean as well. Gulping, she forced her eyes back to his face and saw a hint of a smile tugging at his lips. "Sir," Scully began again, "W-what are you doing here?" Shit. She never stuttered. What was this? "I'm here with some friends on vacation. I thought you were attending a wedding?" He indicated an empty chair at her table, silently asking for permission to sit and join her. At her nod, he couldn't help smiling at her. Taking his sunglasses off, he suppressed a chuckle as she flushed. The stutter had given her away. She had been following him! Sitting down, he rested a leg up on another chair and leaned back with one arm on the table. "I was. I mean I am. I mean the wedding isn't until the 7th." Scully shifted in her seat. Somehow he'd figured out she had been tailing him. How? Never mind. Between the smile and the gleam in his brown eyes, she knew he knew. Damn! "Um, Teresa, my cousin, and her bridesmaids decided a day at Six Flags would be fun, so here I am." "So the wedding is here? You said her bridesmaids - are you a guest then?" "Yes. I probably would have been a bridesmaid, but with that last case we were on-" Skinner laughed out loud at that. "Yeah, it was pretty bizarre-even for an x-file!" He sobered quickly and added, "Scully, we're both on vacation. I don't want to talk about work. Tell me how you like Texas." "It's damn hot!" she answered honestly. "But I'm actually having fun today. The girls talked me into coming with them and I'm so glad I did. I actually feel like Dana for the first time in a long while." Startled by just how revealing that last remark was, she looked down at the water bottle clasped between her hands. "I know exactly what you mean," Skinner said softly, remembering his own thoughts from earlier. Lifting her chin, she met in his intense gaze. Blue eyes captured by chocolate brown. "Today," he continued after a long moment, his voice still soft, "May I call you Dana? And will you please call me Walter?" Today? Scully took a breath. Don't go there, she ordered herself. He's with friends and he'll have to leave soon. But it was with a thrill of hope she answered, "Yes, Walter." "So, Dana," Skinner felt unreasonably happy at the permission to speak her first name, "Why are you sitting here by yourself, then?" "Oh, the girls are on that ride right now," she said, pointing at the large Mexican hat twirling around and around. "I didn't feel like puking today, so I waited this one out," she added, laughing. "Actually, they should be exiting any time now. I thought you were here with friends? Why are you sitting here with me then?" "I am. They are on the Giant. I told them I'd meet them by the exit," he checked his watch, "soon." Debating whether to answer her second question, a sense of boldness came over him. "And I'm sitting here with you because I want to." Again. Blue eyes met brown, and Skinner leaned forward just a little before adding, "and because I saw you following me." Scully gasped at his honesty. Busted. There was no way around it. "You're right," she agreed, trying hard not to blush, "I saw you pass by me and wondered if it was indeed you. You can't blame a girl for curiosity, can you?" "No." He grinned, "and I'm very glad you did, otherwise we wouldn't be sitting here now, Dana." His lips curled up at the surprised look on her face. But before she could say anything, they both started as four women came running up to their table. "Dana! That ride was awesome!" "Who's this, Dana?" "Have you been waiting long?" The girls all asked together, pointing at Skinner and making thumbs-up motions with their hands. Teresa waggled her eyebrows at Dana, and asked, "Dana, who's this hunk you've found, and before lunch, too?" Blushing red at her comment, Dana stood up and made the introductions. "Teresa, Mary, Julia and Robin, this is Walter Skinner, my boss." When four jaws dropped in unison, Dana laughed out loud. "You never said you worked for such a handsome guy!" Mary exclaimed, ever the bold one. Feeling his own face flush at that last comment, Skinner stood to shake all of their hands. "Ladies, it's a pleasure to meet you. I'm here on vacation as well. I happened to see Dana, so I stopped to say hi. Now, " he checked his watch one more time, " I apologize, but I must go now to meet my friends. They should be coming off the Giant very soon." With that, Skinner turned to give a long look at Dana then made to walk away from the group of ladies. "Wait!" called Teresa, looking at Dana and seeing her face fall at his announcement, "We were planning on going on the Titan next - why don't we walk with you?" "But we were going to go on La Vibor - - ow,Julia rubbed her elbow where Teresa pinched her." I mean, yeah, the Titan's next." "Sure, that sounds fine," Skinner agreed. He waited for the girls to start walking before taking a place next to Scully. He couldn't believe his good fortune. Scully silently thanked Teresa for her insight. She couldn't believe her good fortune. Kyle and Cody had just exited the ride when Skinner arrived. He grinned at the surprised looks on their faces as he introduced the ladies accompanying him. "Kyle, Cody, this is Dana Scully. I work with her at the FBI, she's on vacation here as well, it turns out. This is Teresa, Robin, Julia and Mary, her friends that I just met," Skinner continued, "Ladies, these young men are the sons of my best friend, Jake. I'm staying with them during my vacation this week." "Nice to meet you," said Cody looking at all the ladies. Turning to Walter, he added under his breath, " Wow. You sure work fast, Walter!" "It's not what you think, Cody," Skinner growled at the boy. "Can we go on the Titan, now?" Kyle said impatiently. The day was wasting as far as he was concerned. "Titan?" Julia asked, understanding completely why her elbow still smarted from the pinch. She decided to help Dana along. "Then let's get going! We were heading there as well!" "Is that okay, Walter?" Teresa asked. "Would you guys like to join us today? It only seems fittin' since you know Dana so well." Scully couldn't believe what she was hearing. Could it be this easy to actually spend a whole day with Walter? "What d'ya say, guys? Shall we join these lovely ladies for the day?" Skinner said, turning to the twins. Please! Said his heart, but he kept his face neutral. Could it be this easy to actually spend a whole day with Dana? "That's a great idea," answered Cody. "Sure, I don't mind," added Kyle. Skinner once again made sure he fell into step next to Scully as they made their way to the towering orange coaster around the bend from the Giant. He wasn't too sure about actually riding the mega-coaster, but if it kept him next to Dana- IV. Taking off his baseball hat, Walter wiped sweat off his brow for the fifth time since getting in line for the Titan. Looking down at Dana, he could see that her tank top was quickly getting soaked along her spine, and he could feel his own top sticking to his chest and back. Damn, Texas was hot, he grumbled to himself. How long is this stupid line anyway? He found his jaw clenching as he once again looked straight up at the Titan. What maniac designed these things anyway? At over 220 ft, he estimated the cars fell at least 80 mph down that first plunge, then it appeared to whip around several helixes, the non-stop screaming from the passengers attesting to the intensity of what could be debatably called a 'thrill'. Shit. It'd been over 20 years since he rode a coaster, and the idea that this ride may make him lose his lunch had him worried. Well, at least they hadn't had lunch yet. There was no way he'd bow out and not ride it. How could he with Dana standing right there? He was going to do everything he could to impress his lady. Not that she was his lady, but he knew he wanted that above anything else in his life. Dana tried listening to the conversation in front of her. The boys and her friends were huddled around a park map, talking animatedly about the various rides in the park, planning the route that allow them to take in all their favorite rides today. Right now, Dana could care less. All she was interested in was surviving the ride that loomed overhead. If the Judge had made her scream like a girl, what the hell was this monster going to do? How could she possibly hope to keep her cool in front of her boss, the man she so much wanted to impress as a woman, not simply one of his agents? Taking a deep breath, she turned around, and peered up at Walter, squinting a little against the sun slipping through the overhead tarps. "Walter? Have you ridden this coaster before? You said you grew up around here, right?" Skinner looked down into her face fully for the first time since they got in line. Would you look at that, he thought. Freckles! He could see that she had opted for only lip gloss and mascara today, probably because of all the sunscreen he knew she was wearing, and he could only think he'd never seen anyone so beautiful. Her eyes sparkled. Her smile was easy. And it took his breath away. "I grew up just south of Dallas," he answered, "I've been on some smaller coasters before, years ago, before I entered the marine corps. This is the first time I've visited Six Flags though." Pointing overhead, he added, "Actually, I've never seen a coaster this tall before, I'm not too sure about this!" Shaking his head at his honesty, he shrugged his shoulders and gave her a small grin. "Well, if it makes you feel any better, I'm not too sure about this, either!" Dana laughed. The whole idea that they were in line to ride one of the world's biggest coasters was just too much. What a weird twist today had taken. Not that she wasn't happy about it. Just standing next to Walter in line had been enjoyable. With every brush of his hand and bump into his chest as the line moved, she had felt her spirits lift. She wasn't ready to think about any other feelings those brief touches were creating inside her gut. "Dana," he said, bending his head low to her ear, "you wouldn't want to bow out, now would you?" He couldn't resist teasing her. He ignored the fact that that was exactly what he wanted to do. His close words had caused a shiver along her neck, and Dana had to suppress a gasp. "Nope! I'm here to have fun! Besides, what would the girls and your friends think?" She didn't add What would you think? His opinion mattered so much to her. God, please don't let me embarrass myself, Dana prayed. The line started to move again, so she turned around and followed the queue line around another bend. Impressed with her boldness, Skinner could only sigh to himself. There was no way out of this. Please don't let me embarrass myself, he silently prayed. At least it looked like they were almost to the boarding station. It wouldn't be long now he thought thankfully. Let's get this over with. As the attendant checked their straps and safety bars, Walter had to admit it was nice sitting here next to Dana. Their party of eight naturally left them as a 'couple' for these two-seater rides. How he wished they truly were a couple. He looked over at her and grinned. She may be bold, but the look on her face was terror. He smiled encouragement at her as the car started to move, and reached over to take her hand. Dana grabbed his large hand thankfully and tighter than she would have preferred. As the car climbed the steep lift hill, she looked over at Walter. His baseball hat and sunglasses were stowed in a large pocket of his cargo shorts. He was so handsome! His thumb was gently stroking the back her hand, his attempt to help calm her. Was it so apparent she was really afraid? Taking a deep breath, she braced herself for the first plunge. She didn't let go of his hand. Walter had almost forgotten where he was as his hand held Dana's. Her touch sent a jolt of excitement through his heart. She was trusting him, taking his comfort, and it pleased him no end. Seeing her brace herself, Walter looked ahead and suddenly found himself plummeting to the earth. "Ohhh, Shh - - - t!" As the car rushed underground, then up again, and around, Walter lost it. He hoped he was yelling like a man and not a girl. He could hear Dana's screams next to him and started to laugh. This was just too much! Around and around at impossible speeds, Walter could barely take a breath. Tears began to streak down his cheeks at the force of the wind whipping by them, then, as suddenly as the ride had begun, it was over. He'd never been so grateful in his life. As the car came to a stop, Dana realized she still had a death-grip on Walter's hand. She turned to look at him at the same time he turned to look at her. She watched as he undid their safety straps, and helped her out of the car, not releasing her hand. It felt very good, and she certainly didn't want to let go. "I heard you scream, " Dana whispered to him as they made their way through the exit ramp. She was walking slowly making sure her legs were steady. "And I heard you scream, little lady," Walter whispered back, and couldn't resist brushing her wind-mussed hair away from her cheek. Looking at each other, they burst out laughing. They had both lost their cool. And it felt damn good. Rejoining the group, they all agreed it was time to eat. Heading for the burger stand, Skinner felt Dana's hand still in his. Looking down at their clasped hands, he glanced at her face. She wouldn't meet his eyes, but she gave his hand a tiny squeeze. He tightened his grip just a little, feeling his heart begin to hammer. He couldn't help the smile on his face. The Titan was the best ride in the world. After lunch, it was agreed everyone was ready for a water ride. The heat index was up to 103 and everyone was feeling sticky. As they stood in line for the Splash Water, conversation flowed freely around Skinner and Scully. The boys were telling Robin and Julia all about growing up on the ranch, Teresa and Mary were talking about the upcoming wedding. Dana found herself leaning back just a little against Walter in line. He didn't seem to mind, in fact, he'd taken hold of her hand again. His chest felt strong, sturdy, and comfortable. She could feel his breath against the top of her head and felt a hope rise in her heart. Was he finding this as nice as she was? She thought back to the one other time she'd held his hand. It had been right after his surgery, when he'd taken a bullet because he wouldn't give up the investigation into her sister's death. His hand had felt warm and strong, even after such a loss of blood. She vividly recalled how he'd rubbed her knuckles a little with his thumb as he became aware of her. Now, he was doing it again, and she felt a flush in her cheeks that had nothing to do with the heat. Skinner was in heaven. He was holding Dana's hand, and she was standing so close to him, he could feel her against his chest and smell her hair. He wondered if this was really some dream and that he'd wake up any moment. He had to resist bending his head and placing a small kiss on the top of her head. So far the others hadn't noticed their clasped hands. He'd wanted Dana for so long he didn't care if everyone in the park knew they were touching. He could only hope Dana felt the same way and wouldn't pull away from him when they were discovered. "Oh my God! I got soaked!" Mary exclaimed as she climbed out of the boat. "Look at us!" cried Cody and Kyle. Indeed, they didn't seem to have a spot of dryness anywhere. "I barely got wet, " Dana said, rather disappointed, "I thought this ride was supposed to cool me off!" "C'mon, Dana, I'll buy you an ice cream, that should do the trick," Walter said, taking her elbow and leading her up the ramp that led over the ride and to the exit. "Ice cream? Woot!" yelled Kyle. At Walter's nod, he and Cody ran over the bridge and out the exit. The girls went on ahead as well, saying they needed to use the ladies room. "That sounds really n-," Dana's reply was cut short as a boat came down the slope near the bridge sending a wall of water up and over the bridge. The splash had such force, she was knocked off her feet and would have fallen hard on her rear had Skinner not caught her. Sputtering, she grabbed at his arms while she caught her breath. The splash had completely soaked them both. Shirts, shorts and shoes were dripping wet as they stood there in shock. As another boat headed down the slope, Skinner lifted Scully and turned her away from the splash, taking the brunt of it against his back. Holding her close, he could feel her arms around his waist as they steadied each other. When he became aware of the warmth of her body seeping through his clothes, he stepped back abruptly and led her off the bridge. That was too close. He could feel the beginnings of arousal and that would just not do, right here in the middle of an amusement park. Confused by Walter's reaction to their closeness, Dana followed him silently to the ice cream stand. "I-I don't think I need an I-I-ice cream, nnow," she said, beginning to shiver in the shade. "I think I'll just go over there and stand in the sun now." "I'll be right with you, " Walter called after her as he stepped up to pay for the boys' ice creams. When he turned around to follow her, he was struck dumb. Dana had pulled off her tank top and was squeezing the extra water out of it. He could see other people doing the same thing, and even though she was wearing a bathing suit, he couldn't believe his eyes. Prim and proper Scully, in a bikini? Groaning to himself, he made his way over to her. Down boy, he told his body. This is no place for that! As he approached her, he realized what a sensible thing she'd done. Pulling his own shirt over his head, he twisted the fabric, watching as water flowed out of it to splash around his feet. Bending down, he unlaced his shoes and pulled them off one at a time, emptying the water out of them as well. When he turned back to Dana, he caught her staring at his chest. Resisting the urge to smile at her open admiration, he simply pulled his shirt back on and sat down on the bench to put his shoes on. Oh Shit. Busted again. Just play it cool, girl. Then it hit her. What was she doing standing there in her bikini top in front of her boss? He must have gotten an eye-full. Hastily pulling her top back over her head, she also sat on the bench to empty water out of her shoes. Well. At least they were even in the exposing skin department, she thought. Wonder if he liked what he saw as much as she had liked what she saw. Laughing at that thought, she stood, and headed for the restroom. She needed a moment to herself to think through the feelings he was creating deep inside her. Skinner watched her leave and shook his head. Around Dana it's like his brain didn't work anymore. At least he knew she liked what she saw. He checked his watch. 3 in the afternoon. As he joined the others, he realized he had seven hours till closing. Seven hours left to enjoy the woman of his dreams. Seven hours to find out if the possibility existed for her feelings to move from admiration to love. For love her he did. And he wasn't going to settle for anything less. As Dana returned to the group and they headed off for the next ride, Skinner checked the park map. He began to plan his own route around the park. A route to Dana Scully's heart. V. As the group of eight stood in line for the Superman, Skinner considered his reaction to Dana at the water ride and knew holding hands was no longer an option. He needed some distance, albeit every fiber of his being longed to put his arms around her just like the couples around them were unashamedly doing. He'd never thought of an amusement park as a 'date place', but, God, some of them were even necking! He looked back at Scully talking with her friends. The sun was tanning her bare shoulders and he wished beyond reason that he had permission to caress her neck with his lips just like the couple next to him in the queue. How to get Scully to come around to his way of thinking? He needed a plan. He could feel his love for her as a pressure on his heart daily. He'd passed mere want and desire so long ago. Hell, that'd been the main reason for this vacation! AD mode. Let's look at this as an objective. How to get Dana to love Walter as much as Walter already loved Dana. What did he already know? Facts he could handle a lot better than feelings. Fact 1: He knew she already considered him a friend. They'd been through a lot the last few years. Fact 2: Miraculously, he was standing not 5 feet away from her, with the promise of almost 7 hours more of her company. Fact 3: He was positive she already liked his physique. The admiration in her eyes had almost made him blush. Years of working out paid off in one moment, big time. Fact 4: The odds of them being on vacation at the same time, being at an amusement park of all places on the same day, and finding each other in this holiday crowd - Well. This was a fact he would not overlook. He didn't believe in coincidence. He knew this was his one chance to change their relationship. Fact 5: She'd taken his hand when he'd offered it, and hadn't let go. Most importantly, she appeared to really enjoy his touch. Those were the facts. But what did she feel beyond that? Could she be developing feelings for him? Before today, he hadn't thought it possible. He was spit and polish, starch and rules. At least that's what he always presented to the world. Except today. Today, he'd purposed to be simply a man, and it was that man that Dana had responded to. Sneaking a sidelong look at her, he felt his breath catch. Back to the plan. Focus on Fact 5, he determined. Holding hands was out. But what about the occasional brush of an arm or hand while standing in the queue line or walking to the next? He silently gave thanks that they had been naturally 'paired up' for the rides. Plenty of opportunity for the 'accidental' bumping of his knee against hers. He couldn't help the smile that spread wide across his face as he formulated his plan. This could work, he thought, a happy thrill of excitement flooding his chest in anticipation of how the day would progress. Scully thought twilight at the park was simply beautiful. As the Texas sun began to dip past the horizon, golden light splayed across the large coasters, trees and buildings illuminating them with fantasy fire. Electric lights on the rides, buildings, light posts and even the trees added rainbow colors to the golden pallet, transforming the park into a wonderland of magic - and yes, romance. She noticed the crowds had thinned as soon as the holiday fireworks had finished. Families with children had headed home, and she watched as couples drew closer to one another, obviously feeling the same romantic pull that she herself had noticed. As yet another couple walked by her, arms around each other's waists and strolling along with hips purposely brushing each other, Dana felt a jolt of profound emptiness. Sighing, she reached for another piece of pizza, and glanced over at Walter as she took a bite. What the hell had happened at that water ride? One minute, she was enjoying herself immensely, expecting ice cream from him, the next she'd been deluged with water and found herself sputtering in his strong arms. She could still feel the hard flesh of his biceps imprinted under her hands, the solid strength of his chest against her cheek. She grinned slightly, hiding her smile behind her slice of pizza as she recalled the heat she'd felt as his body held her close, helping her regain her footing. It had been the most wonderful feeling she could remember. The most wonderful - and brief! she complained to herself. Sighing again, Dana returned her gaze to her pizza and took another bite. She allowed her mind to slowly review the past afternoon, hoping to make sense of the enigma sitting across the table from her, one Walter Skinner. After drying off the best they could, the group had headed over to the Superman Ride. A towering structure that shot it's riders up into the sky at 45 mph, then dropped them in a free fall back to earth. Walter had walked ahead of her, talking with Kyle & Cody about the rides they'd been on, laughing with them at being soaked and cooled by the boat ride. She'd felt a keen disappointment when she realized he wasn't walking next to her as he had since they met that day. After the Superman ride, Walter had suggested the train ride, something not quite so intense, but the boys had wanted to press on straight to the Batman. Teresa and the girls said the train ride was boring, wanting go with the boys. Not ready for another coaster, Scully had mentioned the train sounded nice, so they had split up, agreeing to meet up at the bumper cars after both rides. Dana had been hopeful that once they were 'alone', maybe he'd take her hand again. But no, he had simply walked quickly with that long stride of his, leading the way, then stood comfortably against the railing as they waited for the train that would give them a tour of the park. The train ride was an experience in frustration. Walter had taken a seat next to her on the bench, and because of the heavy crowds, ended up being pushed right up against her right side, shoulders pressed to shoulders, hips to hips. Yet, he sat silently, hands lightly folded in his lap. With every turn and jerk of the train, his thigh pressed against hers, almost causing her to gasp. After an eternity, the ride finally ended, and Dana couldn't remember anything except the rough hair of his tanned leg gently scraping the smooth creamy skin of her own. As they neared the bumper cars, their friends were no where in sight. The line was obviously longer for the Batman. "Would you like a drink?" Walter had inquired, "It might be awhile before they join us." "Sure," she had said, taking a seat on a bench shaded by a tall tree. Skinner had joined her after purchasing four bottles of water. Scully noticed he sat a good two feet away from her at the other end of the bench, setting the water down between them. She reached for the closest bottle and sat back, enjoying the cool liquid as it soothed her parched mouth. The temperature had climbed to almost 105, and sweat was dripping off her brow. She had rolled the ice cold bottle across her throat, neck and brow, eyes closed enjoying the refreshing touch. When she'd opened her eyes, she found that Walter had taken his sunglasses off, turned slightly on the bench so he could face her and had been watching her intently. She had felt her breath stop. Longing? Hunger? What exactly had his eyes been communicating to her? Dare she even hope - love? If what she saw was real, and not her imagination, why the hell didn't he take her hand? She had looked away, not uncomfortable under his gaze, but to help herself breath. Okay. So he had feelings for her. Okay. Now what? She just didn't know what to do, so she took another drink of water and stared at a place somewhere to the left of Walter. They had sat there, not talking, drinking all the water, with Walter never taking his eyes off her, and her stealing glances to see if he had. The tension in her belly had been about at breaking point when she finally heard their friends' approach. After the bumper cars, there had been several other rides that were a blur to her. All she could think about were those awesome deep brown eyes and the emotion she saw each and every time she looked at him. She had found herself on hyper-alert, anticipating eagerly the next brush of his arm, the next accidental touch of his hand or those fine legs. And it had played havoc with her insides. As the afternoon grew on, she noticed the slight upturning of his lips, like he was trying to hide a funny secret. Wiping her mouth with her napkin, Dana shook herself. This had to be one of the weirdest days of her life. Forget the X-Files. A day at Six Flags, she'd discovered, had turned out more bizarre than any case she'd ever been on. "So, What do you all want to do now?" Dana asked, gathering up some of the dinner trash to throw away. She smiled at Kyle and Cody as they fought over the last piece of pizza. Ha! Boys are the same no matter what generation, she thought, remembering how her own brothers would vie for the last piece of whatever they'd had for dinner that night. "I was hoping to go up on the Oil Derrick,Walter responded. "It must be quite a sight now that it's dark." "Oh, you've got to be kidding!" Kyle complained. "That's the most boring attraction here!" Cody agreed. "Hey! You all promised me the La Vibora-" reminded Julia. "And we've GOT to ride the Flashback before we go," Mary said, looking for Robin and Teresa for support. "Well, how much time do we have left before the park closes?" Dana asked. "I saw the La Vibora and was hoping to ride it, but the Oil Derrick sounds nice. I wonder how far you can see from up there?" "It's 8:30 now, so we've still got an hour and a half," Walter said quickly, not even looking at his watch. That's pretty good, Dana thought. She wondered if all ex-military men kept time that well. "Okay, how about we split up?" Teresa decided. "You and Walter can go to the Oil Derrick, and the rest of us will go over to the Flashback. And we'll meet at the La Vibora at - 9:30. That way we can all do what we want." "All right," Dana agreed quickly. "We'll see you then!" As she turned towards Walter, she resisted taking his hand. Lord, she had it bad. Quickening her pace, she led the way over to the derrick. Let him keep up for a change, she thought, angry at herself that she just wasn't bold enough to do what she wanted. If only he'd make some move - any move. Skinner was having a wonderful time. He grinned as Dana picked up the pace, and watched her for a moment before following her. God bless Teresa. He'd have his lady to himself for a whole hour. He'd seen her resist taking his hand just now. He wasn't an AD for nothing. He was of all things observant. He'd watched her all day, noticing how his each and every touch had made her just a little more tense. Catching up to her easily with his long legs, he purposely bumped against her hip. "Sorry,he said quietly. Looking down at her, he saw a flush creep up her throat to her face that had nothing to do with the slight sunburn she'd gotten today. Remembering a line from an old TV show he would watch on occasion, "I love it when a plan comes together", he smiled outright. VI. As they entered the queue for the Oil Derrick, Dana felt the light touch of Walter's hand at her back, guiding her through the line. Nothing he hadn't done frequently back at the JEH, being the gentleman that he was. Then why was she acutely aware of the tingles flowing up and down her spine at this touch? She took a deep, calming breath. Stealing a look up at his face, she saw he was looking up at the towering structure above them. Following his gaze, she tilted her head way back trying to see the top of the observation tower. The famous landmark was at least 300 feet tall. Feeling the back of her head brush across his firm chest, she straightened up quickly, tamping down the longing to once again grab his hand. C'mon, Dana! she thought. No matter what he may feel for you, the fantasy that they could just be Walter and Dana today was going to be over in less than two hours. She knew that. He knew that. That's probably why he'd stopped holding her hand, why he'd created a distance between them over the last few hours. But if that were true, her heart reminded her, why had he looked at you today like that? Oh, shut up, Dana firmly told her heart. As the queue line flowed them into the elevator that would take them to the top, Dana was crowded to the back, separated from Walter by a young, teenage couple. They had their arms around each other's necks, and leaning towards each other began a long, slow kiss. Dana laughed to herself and looked away when she realized they weren't going to stop kissing till they got to the top. Looking up to see if Walter found it just as funny, she felt her breath whoosh out of her. His eyes met hers above the heads of the young lovers, black and intense. His full lips were pulled tight and his jaw was clenched. Nope. He wasn't finding this funny. Just then, the elevator came to a stop and the door behind her opened. Escaping the elevator and his gaze, she wondered just how he felt about the kissing couple, when she suddenly came to a stop. Before her, the metroplex stretched out, a seemingly unending sea of light and color. "Oh," she whispered, taking in the beautiful sight. It was a clear night, and thousands of stars above twinkled and moved in concert with the electric lights of man below. Dallas' distinctive skyline was shimmering in the distance, making her feel like she could see forever across the Texas plains. Windy this high up from the ground, Dana felt herself shiver as the cool night air brushed across her sunburn. Wrapping her arms across her chest, she rubbed at her arms to create some warmth, sorry now that she hadn't picked up her sweater from the locker. "It's a wondrous sight, isn't it?" a deep resonant voice whispered in her ear, creating even more shivers along her body. Dana stiffened, then relaxed as large warm hands covered her shoulders, then began sliding up and down her arms, helping her get warm. Oh boy. Maybe she was wrong. Wait. Maybe she was right! "Yes, it is," she answered, leaning back into the warmth of his solid, strong chest. She stifled a moan as he drew her closer, pulling her into his embrace. Resting her head back, she relished in the sensation that she'd been craving almost all day. Closing her eyes, she focused on his gentle caress and the hard body behind her. Thankful he'd taken the initiative, she released a long, soft sigh. Walter let out the breath he was holding when he heard her sigh. Sure as he was about her reactions to him today, his airway had seized up when he'd crossed the line to actually touch and hold her. He ran his chin over her hair, drinking in her unique scent. Oh yeah. He could get drunk on Dana. After a few minutes, he turned her towards him, wrapping his arms around her back. His heart was hammering and he knew she could feel the thumping against her cheek. He didn't care. He wanted her to know what she did to him, how she made him feel. Dana snuggled closer to him and wrapped her arms around his waist. The strong beating of his heart was echoing in her ears, and her heart. Definitely an x-files day, she mused. Who'd have thunk? She turned her head up to his, seeking his gaze. Finding his dark, welcoming eyes already on her, she smiled. Running her hands up his muscular back, she closed her eyes as his head dipped towards hers. Finally, was her last coherent thought for some time. Walter lightly brushed her lips with his, running his right hand through her hair. His left stayed on her back, rubbing light, sensuous circles around her spine. He smiled when he heard her moan and pull at his shoulders to deepen the kiss. There was no way he was going to hurry this perfect moment. He had Dana Scully in his arms! She felt warm and wonderful, lips smooth as silk. Pressing just a little harder, he felt her mouth open to his, and he plunged in, tasting her sweetness, and the faint flavor of pepperoni. Grinning, he pulled back to look at her, and saw deep blue eyes swirling with love? Was this too much to hope for? Crushing her body against his, timid no longer, his tongue taking turns exploring her mouth as she discovered his. He could feel her hands gripping his shoulders, pulling him tighter into her embrace. Dana was doing all she could to not faint. The heady sensations he was creating in her mouth, down her back, in her hair were far beyond anything she'd ever felt before. The only thing in the universe was this man in front of her, whispering his love straight to her soul through action. Of course he'd choose action over words. Understanding his basic nature, she drew his love in, and returned it with a fervor of her own. A light giggle from two kids watching them broke the moment. Gasping, they pulled away slightly, to stare at each other, knowing what they'd see in each other's eyes. Their nonverbal communication was so complete there was no need for any words. Resisting the urge to frown at the kiddos, Walter took her by the arm and guided her back to the elevator, trying to restore his breathing to normal. Waiting for the elevator, chocolate brown eyes held deep blue, sharing all the feelings he'd ever felt for her. Dana found she could easily decipher his look now that she was confident of his love. With her wide smile, she let him know she welcomed his feelings and more. She looked down as he reached for her, feeling him take her fingers once again in his grasp. Walter felt like his heart was going to burst if he didn't kiss her again and soon. Waiting till they exited the elevator, he pulled her along the pathway until he found a bench in semi-darkness, the light shaded from the bench by some overhanging trees. Sitting, he instantly pulled her into his embrace once again, kissing her for all he was worth, trying to grasp the turn his life had taken with just one day at an amusement park. Dana leaned against his marvelous chest, and continued the exploration begun 300 feet above them. She dipped her tongue between his lips allowing a moan to escape. His answering groan pleased her no end. Becoming conscious of their public display, they pulled back, catching their breath. Walter leaned back and draped his arm around her shoulders. Together, they watched the thinning crowd stroll by, content in each other's company, deep in their own thoughts. After a few more minutes, Walter reluctantly drew Dana to her feet. "We better get going," he said, " or we'll be late meeting the others." Automatically checking her watch, Dana saw that it was 9:25. How does he do that? At the entrance to the La Vibora, they found their friends waiting for them. Teresa cocked an eyebrow at Dana when she saw Walter's arm around her waist. Dana just smiled at her. After enduring surprised looks from all the others, they simply joined them in the queue. The line moved swiftly, and they soon found themselves ready to board the bobsled ride. Realizing Dana was about to sit between his legs, Walter gave a silent thank you that they hadn't ridden this ride earlier in the day. Taking her seat, Dana smiled back at Walter. She leaned back against his torso as his arms wrapped around her, and put her hands over his. As the ride began to pull them up the lift hill, she felt gravity pull her back into his body. She could feel his magnificent chest pressing against her back, and oh my, something else, too. Oh yes, she was definitely having fun today. Walter shifted in his seat, trying not to let Dana feel his reaction to her closeness. But as soon as the ride started, he knew it was a lost cause. Her rear was pressed right up against him, causing a most pleasant friction with every twist and turn of the bobsled ride. And here he thought the Titan was the best ride in the world. He was wrong! When the bobsled came to a stop, Walter hugged her back to him briefly, making sure she knew he was in trouble. Patting his cheek, she whispered, "Just follow me." Grinning, she climbed out of the sled, and waited for him. Walking just behind her, he casually placed a hand on her shoulder and followed her out the exit. Luckily, everyone needed to use the restroom, in preparation for the long rides home. Leading him to the men's side, Dana couldn't help but giggle. Raising a stern eyebrow at her, he frowned at her as he made a hasty retreat. More giggles followed him in. After collecting their belongings from the lockers, the group found themselves standing in the parking lot saying their good-byes. Understanding that their friends had 'gotten together', the girls and boys stepped aside politely to give Walter and Dana a moment to themselves. "I'll call you tomorrow?" Walter asked, hoping she didn't already have plans. "Of course," she answered. With a sudden thought, she added, "What are you doing on the 7th?" "We were going boating on the lake at Jake's-" he stopped short, realizing where she was headed with her question. "No, actually, I was hoping to accompany this beautiful redhead I know to a wedding she's attending," he added, brushing her hair off her forehead with the tips of his fingers. Laughing, they hugged, and found themselves kissing once again. With one more squeeze of her hand, Walter turned to follow Kyle and Cody. Dana watched him go, a little stunned at the turn her life had taken in just a couple of hours. Dodging the questions the girls kept firing at her, she quietly walked over to Teresa's car. Knowing she'd get no sleep tonight with the image of his deep brown eyes hovering in front of her and the memory of his warm lips upon hers, she wondered just how early he'd call. Climbing into the cab of Jake's truck, Walter wondered just how early he could call. The End This is the first installment of my Vacation series.
