From the journal of Fox William Mulder:

I had always thought I would spend my 40th birthday the same way I have spent most of my other birthdays - usually alone, almost always working, and undoubtedly wishing for something more. Last year I didn't get to celebrate my birthday at all. I guess the aliens who abducted me didn't recognize such things as birthdays, not that I had really expected them to. I mean, what were they supposed to have done, stop all the experimenting and torture and bring me a birthday cake? After what I went through last year on my birthday, part of me really didn't want to acknowledge this year's either, especially since it was my 40th, but deep down I knew I had a lot to celebrate. So, I decided to go ahead and mark the occasion. After all, I couldn't stop the passage of time, as much as I wanted to. However, despite my decision, it appeared that Scully had forgotten. But as usual, I was never more wrong . . .

Mulder was awakened by the sound of a baby crying. At first he was confused as to where the sound was coming from, then his sleep-induced haze left him and he realized that it was his son. Looking over at the woman in the bed beside him, he saw that Scully was still asleep. Scully had caught a touch of the flu several days before and though she was feeling better, she had been sleeping much deeper than usual. Normally the sound of William fussing woke her up instantly and almost always before it did Mulder.

Quietly getting out of bed as not to wake Scully, Mulder made his way across the hall to the spare room that they had set up as the nursery. The nightlight above the changing table cast soft shadows throughout the room. Crossing to the crib that was on the far wall, Mulder reached down and picked up the crying infant. "What's wrong, big guy?"

At the sound of his father's voice, William stopped crying and looked up with wide-eyed wonder. Mulder looked down at his son with equal awe. It had been five months since William's birth and it was as amazing to him now as it had been then. He had never expected or even really wanted to be a father, but now that he was one, he was surprised how much he loved it.

Snuggling William to his chest, Mulder looked into his son's big, blue eyes. He had been ecstatic when he realized the color of eyes William had been born with were the color they were going to stay. Mulder loved that they were exactly the same shade as Scully's. William also had Scully's facial structure. He was tall for his age and his hair, though at first baring a resemblance to Skinner's (as Mulder had joked), was beginning to grow in thick and dark. Mulder had been glad to see that. As much has he loved Scully's petite size and her red hair - and those were two of his favorite things about her appearance - he was glad that William had some physical traits that connected father and son. He wanted everyone to know without a single doubt in their minds that William was his son.

Laying William on the changing table, Mulder quickly changed his diaper and refastened the snaps of the one-piece sleeper Scully had dressed their son in earlier that evening. He moved back to the crib and started to lay William down once more, but William was having none of that. He began to fuss again and Mulder knew that William was going to be awake for a while. Grabbing the red, crib blanket that matched the room's primarily color scheme, Mulder headed into the living room, wrapping his son up in the blanket as he did. Sitting down on the couch, Mulder cradled William in one arm and grabbed the remote control that was on the end table. He turned on the television, making sure the volume was low enough so he would not wake Scully. Flipping through the cable channels, he tried to find something decent to watch. All that seemed to be on at this late hour were infomercials. He did manage to catch the tail end of an ESPN interview with the Olympic softball hopeful Kimpa Smith, but that was followed by bowling, so he changed channels again. William began squirming, so Mulder set down the remote to adjust him to a better position. After William was resettled, Mulder glanced back up at the television screen and saw that he had stopped on what appeared to be "Sex and the City". Looking down at William, he said, "Sorry, buddy, but I think we'd better change this. I don't think this is the type of show your mommy would approve of you watching."

"And what show would that be?"

At the sound of Scully's voice, Mulder looked up and saw her walking toward the couch. She had forgone her usual robe and was wearing only the soft, green, velvet nightgown she had gone to bed in. It had buttons down the front that allowed her to nurse William with little trouble. As Scully sat down beside him, Mulder answered, "Sex and the City." When Scully did not answer, he said, "I wasn't watching it. I was flipping channels when I had to stop because Will was fussing."

Scully laughed softly. "Don't sound do guilty, Mulder. I honestly didn't think anything about it," she said as she reached out and ran her hand over William's dark head. "Besides, Will's already seen the show."

Mulder raised his eyebrows. "Scully, I'm shocked," he teased, although, truthfully, he was slightly surprised that Scully had even seen the racy show. She as not a prude by any means, but it did not seem like her normal television fare.

"I covered his ears at the inappropriate parts," Scully teased back.

"Actually, I'm more surprised that you have watched the show."

Scully grinned slyly. "Where do you think I heard about that thing you liked so much the other night?"

Now Mulder was not only surprised, he was floored. Just when he thought he could not love Scully more than he already did, she did something that made him fall even deeper in love with her. Scully was not only the mother of the child he thought he would never have, but his best friend and the most amazing lover he had ever had. The only regret he had recently in regards to their sex life was that it was not frequent enough. In the few, short months that he and Scully had been together romantically before his abduction, they had made love almost every night, sometimes twice in the same night. The weekends had been even better. It had been a regular occurrence for them to spend the entire weekend in bed, only getting up to eat and go to the bathroom. Now their son was their main focus and sex had taken a back burner. They were lucky if they were able to make love once a week. If they did manage to find the time, it was rushed to make sure they finished before William decided to make his presence known. Mulder loved his son with all his heart, but he also loved Sully and missed being alone with her.

Mulder's thought was brought back to the present as William began to cry softly. Knowing that he was probably hungry, Mulder handed the fussing infant to Scully. She quickly undid the first couple of buttons on her nightgown and cradled William in her arms. This was one of Mulder's favorite things in the world to watch. Seeing his son being fed by Scully was an awe-inspiring sight. He wrapped his arms around Scully's waist and gently guided her so she was resting her back against her chest. As she laid her head back on his shoulder, Mulder reached out and ran his hand over William's head. He then touched Scully's cheek. "You are so beautiful, but watching you feed our son takes my breath away."

Scully smiled softly. "I love it when you hold me while I feed Will. I love being surrounded by my two favorite men."

Kissing the top of Scully's head, Mulder replied, "I'm so glad we were granted our miracle, Scully."

"Me, too, Mulder," Scully said, tears evident in her eyes. "I thank God everyday for granting me two miracles." At Mulder's quizzical glance, she continued, "One, of course, is Will. The other is that you were returned to me. As much as I love our son, this would have meant nothing to me without you here to share it with."

Tears started to fall down Mulder's face. He really did not deserve this woman he was holding in his arms, but for whatever reason, he had been returned to her. He was thankful for that fact everyday and never lost sight that, as Scully had said, it had been a miracle. He knew that he would do whatever was in his power to stay by her side and try to be the man that he knew she deserved. He wanted to be worthy of the love Scully so graciously bestowed upon him and he wanted to be the type of man she was proud was the father of her child. But most importantly, he thought as he took Scully's hand in his and looked down at the matching rings on their fingers, he wanted to be the type of man Scully would never regret marrying.

The next afternoon, Mulder hoisted the bag of groceries he was carrying higher in his arms as he fumbled in his pocket for his keys. Scully has sent him to the store while William took his afternoon nap. This was a fairly normal, almost every day occurrence, but this was not a normal, ordinary day. Today was Mulder's 40th birthday. He has thought Scully would have at least wished him "Happy Birthday", but she had not said one word or acknowledged that the day was different than any other. He tried not to let it affect him, but deep down he was disappointed. He had thought after all they had been through the last year that Scully would have at least made him a cake or something. But she had just kissed him the same as she did every morning and went on about her daily routine.

Sighing, Mulder opened the door. Stepping into the apartment, he nearly dropped the grocery bag as he was greeted by a loud yell of "Surprise!" Looking around, Mulder saw that Mrs. Scully, Skinner, the Lone Gunmen, and Special Agents John Doggett and Monica Reyes were all standing in the middle of the living room. Scully walked over to him and pulled his face down to her level so she could kiss him. "Happy Birthday," she said softly.

"I thought you forgot," Mulder replied as Scully took the bag from him.

Mrs. Scully came and gave Mulder a hug. "She's been planning this for weeks."

Scully walked back into the living room and rejoined Mulder and her mother by the door. Wrapping her arms around Mulder's waist, she said, "Why do you think I've been sending you to the store everyday for the past two weeks?"

"I really though we needed those things you sent me for," Mulder shrugged.

Scully laughed softly. "Well, actually we did, so it was a perfect excuse to get you out of the house so I could call everyone."

Mulder laughed as well as the rest of his guests came over to wish him a "Happy Birthday". They all then moved into the kitchen for the cake and ice cream. The cake had been purchased from Mulder's favorite bakery and the ice cream was homemade. Mulder suspected that Mrs. Scully had something to do with that. After the cake, they all went back into the living room so Mulder could open his presents. Agent Reyes had gotten Mulder a cd of recorded whale songs. He was confused at first, but when he saw the look that passed between Reyes and Scully, he figured there must be a story behind it that he would have to ask Scully about later. Mrs. Scully had gotten him a book that they had been talking about the week before over dinner and had both said they wanted to read. The Gunmen had agreed to completely overhaul and upgrade his computer. Doggett had played it safe and bought him a gift certificate from a local department store. It was Skinner's gift, though, that was the most unusual and out of character. Skinner had gotten him a lava lamp with floating U.F.O.'s inside. Mulder had been both shocked and amused that his stoic and normally stern former boss had picked out something so retro and hip. Skinner had just shrugged his shoulders and said it had remimded him of Mulder.

As Mulder finished opening his presents, William woke up from his nap. Scully excused herself to go feed and change him and she brought him back into the living room after she had finished. As his son was passed from person to person and fawned over, Mulder just sat back and watched. He was so glad that every person in the room was in his life. He knew what each one had done for Scully while he was gone and he would never be able to thank them enough.

Several hours later, the party began to wind down. As everyone filed out, Mulder was surprised to see Scully hand her mother William's diaper bag and crib blanket. "There is an new can of formula and extra bottles in the bag," he heard Scully say. He walked over to join the women and Scully must have seen the look of confusion on his face because she said, "Mom agreed to watch Will for the night."

Mulder was upset for a moment that Scully would decide something as major as letting their son stay overnight with someone else for the first time without discussing it with him first, even if that person was Mrs. Scully who he loved and trusted. After all, William was his son, too. Then the implications of Mrs. Scully taking William sunk in. He and Scully would be all alone in the house for the entire night with no interruptions. A smile crossed his face at the thought. "Thanks for doing this for us, Maggie."

Mrs. Scully smiled back. "It's no trouble. What kind of grandmother would I be if I didn't want to spend time spoiling my grandchild?" Her smile grew wider. "And what kind of mother would I be to deny my daughter and son-in-law some alone time?"

Scully handed William to Mrs. Scully. "Bye, baby. Be good for grandma," she said as she kissed the top of William's head.

As Mulder leaned over to repeat the gesture, William grabbed one of his fingers. Mulder kissed the small hand and then reached down to tickle William lightly, which sent William into a fit of giggles. "See you later, slugger. But don't listen to your mom. We would like to get you back."

Swatting Mulder playfully on the arm, Scully asked, "Now you have everything you need at your house, don't you, Mom? You have a crib, a baby seat, a..."

"Dana," Mrs. Scully interrupted. "I know it was a while ago, but I did manage to raise four, healthy children."

Scully blushed. "I'm sorry, mom."

"I know you are nervous about letting William out of your sight for even one night, but he'll be fine. You two need this time together. Enjoy it. I love you both and I'll see you later." With that said, Mrs. Scully turned and walked out the door.

As the door closed, Mulder and Scully looked at each other. Mulder was suddenly nervous. Although he had been with Scully many times before, he was suddenly unsure how to proceed or what Scully wanted or might have planned. He ran his hand through his hair and looked over at Scully. "So, what do we do now?"

Scully laughed softly and moved to Mulder. "Now the real party can begin." She took his hand and led him back toward the bedroom.

Mulder's mouth nearly fell open as he walked into the bedroom behind Scully. She had been busy earlier that evening. Candles were lit all around the room and cast a soft, warm glow on the furniture and walls. An ice-filled bucket stood by the bed and two wine glasses sat on the nightstand. The comforter was already turned back and a box sat on top of it. Letting go of his hand, Scully walked over and picked up the box. She then handed it to him. "Happy Birthday, Mulder. Go ahead and open that and I'll be right back."

Mulder watched Scully walk into the bathroom and then opened the box Scully had given him. Inside was a pair of navy blue, silk boxers. He quickly removed the clothes he was wearing, folded them, and put on his present. He had just finished pulling them up when he heard Scully re-enter the bedroom. This time his mouth did drop open. Scully stood before him in a lace, silk teddy and matching robe that were exactly the same color as his boxers. The dark blue set off Scully's crimson hair and made her deep blue eyes sparkle. Scully had not lost all of the weight she had gained while carrying William, but Mulder though she was even sexier now that her curves were more pronounced. He felt arousal was over him and his breathing speed up. "Good god, Scully," he said in a deep, gravely that he had not heard himself use in quite awhile.

A smile crossed Scully's face and she joined Mulder by the bed. She reached out and ran her hand slowly up his chest. "I could say the same to you." Indicating that Mulder should sit down on the bed, Scully reached out and pulled the bottle out of the ice bucket. She uncorked it and poured the liquid into the glasses. Handing one to Mulder, she moved to stand before him once more. "I'm sorry that it's only sparkling cider, but with me nursing..."

Mulder just shook his head. "It's not a problem, Scully. Besides, I want to be completely clear-headed tonight."

Scully smiled again. "I know what you mean. It seems like forever since we have been able to be alone together. We didn't even spend our wedding night alone. I have never regretted for one, single moment having our son, but I do miss being with just you. That is why I planned this. We have so much to be thankful for and I wanted to celebrate all those things with no interruptions or any sense that we needed to hurry. Tonight is all about you and me and no one else."

"Here's to us," Mulder said as he held up his glass.

"Here's to us," Scully repeated as she clinked her glass with Mulder's.

Mulder took a quick drink and then set the glass back down on the nightstand. He watched Scully drink from hers and after she had, he gently took it from her. He set it down beside his. Pulling Scully to him, he looked into her eyes. He ran his finger lightly down Scully's cheek. "You are so incredibly beautiful, Scully." Without waiting for her response, he buried his fingers in her hair and brushed her lips with his. The kiss was gentle at first and then quickly grew in passion. Scully wrapped her arms around Mulder's shoulders just as his arm snuck around her waist. He pulled her closer against his naked chest and she opened her mouth to him. As they both began exploring each other's mouths, Mulder slipped Scully's robe from her body, followed by her teddy.

Moving back further onto the bed, Mulder drug Scully with him, throwing her off balance and against his chest. Turning, he laid her down on the bed and just looked at the vision before him. Scully's breasts were larger and fuller than before and her stomach, which had always been flat, was now softly rounded. Mulder thought she looked like some fertility goddess. With their focus so much turned on the baby and their infrequent sexual encounters being so hurried, he had not really gotten the chance to see the changes to her body that having William had caused. Mulder now found himself responding to her with an even greater force than he had before her pregnancy. He decided to tell her. "You have always managed to turn me on like no one ever has, but now I find you even sexier. Maybe it has to do with the fact that you are my wife and the mother of my child, I'm not sure. All I know is that I have never found myself more attracted to you than I am right now."

Scully reached up and ran her hand down Mulder's face. "I love you, Mulder."

Mulder took the hand that was on his face and intertwined it with his. He kissed Scully again and then began to move down her neck. He continued down her chest, stopping when he reached her breasts. Letting go of Scully's hand, he began to touch her lightly, knowing that her breasts were still sensitive. He longed to take them into his mouth, but he knew that since Scully was still breastfeeding, that it was not a good idea. Instead he licked each one, but did not go near her nipples. When Scully was writhing beneath him, Mulder moved to kiss her stomach, knowing how much she liked it when he licked and sucked on her navel. He was not disappointed as she began to moan his name softly. Wanting to bring her even more pleasure, he continued his descent down her body. He was surprised when he felt Scully's hands tugging on his arms. He looked at her with a curious expression on his face. He knew how much Scully loved it when he went down on her, so he was wondering why she stopped him.

"We can both do that later. Right now I need you to make love to me," Scully said quietly.

Mulder broke into a smile. How could he say no to such a request? Reaching down, he pulled off his boxer shorts and moved back to lay beside Scully. "Since you planned this party, what is your position of choice?"

Instead of answering, Scully reached over and pulled Mulder to her. She slid her arms up his back and wrapped her legs around his waist. Mulder got the message and rolled her onto her back. They locked gazes as Mulder slowly entered her. He stayed that way for a brief moment, reveling in the feeling of being inside the woman he loved and then he started slowly thrusting. Scully moved her hips against his and the continued the slow, intimate dance. Mulder tried to maintain the languid pace, knowing they had all night, but his body involuntarily sped up. Scully seemed to agree with the new pace as her moans increased and she began calling out his name. Mulder kissed a path up her neck and reclaimed her mouth with his. As their tongues met, Mulder could feel his release building up. He wanted to delay it a while longer, but he knew he could not. As his release hit, he felt Scully's as well.

As Mulder lay there in the haze his orgasm had caused, he realized something important. The connection he had always felt with Scully after making love was still there, but it was much stronger than it had ever been before. It was like all the pain and sadness of the past, all the emotional devastation he had felt after returning from his abduction was finally healed. It was as though this act had been a rebirth for him. And how appropriate that it had happened on the day he had been born 40 years before.

Scully's sigh of contentment brought Mulder back to where he was. He arched his back and looked down at the woman still lying beneath him. She smiled up at him. "God, how I missed that."

Mulder smiled in return. "Right back at you, babe."

"I could stay like this all night," Scully said, trying to hold back a yawn.

Seeing that Scully was about to fall asleep, Mulder rolled onto his back and pulled her to him. Scully laid her head on his chest and wrapped one arm around his waist. Within seconds, she had fallen asleep. Mulder looked down at her and felt contentment like he had never known before wash over him. Smiling to himself, he joined Scully in the realm of sleep.

Several hours later, the growling of his stomach awakened Mulder. Looking over at the clock on the nightstand, he saw that it was a few minutes after midnight. No wonder he was so hungry. He had only had a piece of cake since lunch, which he had burned off making love to Scully. He tried to slip out of bed without waking her, but his movements caused her eyes to open. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake you up."

"No, I'm glad you did. I didn't mean to fall asleep. I wanted to spend the whole night with you," Scully replied, slight distress in her voice.

Mulder laughed quietly. "Scully, you spend every night with me."

"You know what I mean, Mulder."

"I know, baby," he said, leaning into kiss Scully. As he did, his stomach growled again.

It was Scully's turn to laugh. "I take it you would like some food." At Mulder's nod, she continued, "Come on, Papa Bear. Let's go feed you."

Mulder got out of bed and put back on the boxers Scully had given him. Scully, in turn, grabbed the t-shirt he had been wearing earlier and slipped it over her head. They both walked out of the bedroom and into the living room. "Go ahead and sit down. I'll grab us something and meet you on the couch."

Scully shook her head. "No, I have something I had planned for dinner, but we decided to nap instead. You go sit down and I'll be right back."

Mulder was about to walk over to the couch when he thought of something. He went back into the bedroom and grabbed the glasses of sparkling cider off the nightstand. Quickly dumping out the contents in the bathroom sink, he headed into the living room once again, making sure to pick up the still-cold bottle from the bucket of melted ice it sat in. Crossing to the couch, he sat down and poured two fresh glasses of cider. As few minutes later, Scully walked back into the living room carrying something that smelled wonderful. It took a few seconds to realize the aroma was that of his favorite sandwich. Several years before, Mulder had found this deli just around the corner from his old apartment that made the best cheese steak sandwiches that he had ever tasted. He had introduced Scully to them shortly thereafter. In the months before his abduction in which they had been romantically involved, they had ordered these sandwiches at least once a week after a round of lovemaking. It touched him deeply that Scully remembered that. But for him it had been more about being with her than it had been about the actual sandwich. Scully, too, appeared to feel the same way because she sat down beside him and said, "Some of my favorite memories from the short time we were together before you were taken are of being curled up with you on the couch in your apartment eating these sandwiches late at night. It was one of the things I missed the most while you were gone. I missed the feel of your arms around me while we were doing something as normal as sharing a meal. Since tonight was about celebrating all we have to be thankful for, I had the guys pick these up on the way over here. I thought it was a good way to mark the occasion, something that was uniquely us."

Mulder could hear the emotion choking Scully's voice and he saw the tears falling softly down her face. He could feel his own tears starting to make their way down his. Once again he sent up a silent prayer of thanks that this amazing woman was his. He wrapped his arms around Scully, just as she had said she missed, and pulled her to him. "It's perfect, Scully. I love it and I love you, more and more each day."

Scully turned in Mulder's arms and kissed him. "I love you, too. I thank God everyday that you were returned to me."

Mulder held Scully even closer. They stayed like that for a few moments and then Scully climbed into his lap. They ate their sandwiches in silence and finished off the bottle of sparkling cider. After their midnight snack had been cleaned up, they resumed their positions on the couch. They leaned in to kiss each other and that led to touching, which in turn led to exploring. Soon they were making love again. This time it was slow and gentle, almost like an affirmation that they really were here together, able to share their love and passion for the other with each other. After they had both climaxed, they retired to the bedroom and the exploration started anew.

It was a different sensation that woke Mulder the next morning. He moved carefully out from under the arm Scully had around his chest and went to use the bathroom. Needing a drink of water, Mulder went into the kitchen to get one. On his way back to the bedroom, he heard Scully giggle. Upon entering the room, he saw that Scully was on the phone. He assumed she had called her mother to check up on William. He crawled back into bed just as Scully said, "I'm sorry, Mom. I should have warned you about that... Yes, I know you raised two sons." Mulder laughed softly as Scully rolled her eyes. "Fountain Will struck again," she whispered to him as she put her hand over the phone receiver.

Mulder suppressed another laugh. 'Fountain Will' was right. It seemed that nearly every time they changed their son, he tried to spray them. Both he and Scully had quickly learned how to change William and not become a target. Mulder thought, but then realized that Mrs. Scully was sure to have expected it. After all, like she said, she had raised two sons.

Scully finished her conversation with her mother, promising that she and Mulder would stay for dinner when they came to pick William up later that evening. As she hung up the phone, Scully said quietly, "I miss him."

"So do I. We can go pick him up now if you want to." Though he had offered, Mulder was torn as to what he wanted the answer to be. Part of him wanted to rush right over to his mother-in-law's house and pick his son up at once, but the other part wanted to spend more time alone with Scully.

Sighing softly, Scully replied, "No, this evening will be fine. I want to spend more time with Will's daddy." She was silent for a moment, and then asked, "Does that make me a bad mother?"

Mulder gently pulled Scully into his arms and hugged her to his chest. "If it did then I would be a bad father because I want to spend more time with my son's mother. But to answer your question, Sweetheart, I think you are the most amazing mother. You are so patient and caring. But every parent needs a break. You have not been away from Will for more than an hour at a time since he was born. You needed this time to recharge. We both did. And we also needed this time to reconnect to each other. Once day in the not so far off future Will is not going to depend on us a much as he does right now and we will be able to spend more time alone, just the two of us. When that time comes, I do not want to have things to suddenly become awkward between us. You are my best friend, my wife, and the love of my life in addition to being the mother of my child. I don't want to lose touch with any of those aspects of you, because I need them all."

Scully wiped the tears that were shining in her eyes. "I've cried more the past two days that I ever did the entire time I was suffering from postpartum depression. How did I ever get so lucky to have someone like you fall in love with me? I love you so much that it scares me sometimes. I have never needed anyone or at least I thought I didn't. But I need you. And you're right, we do need time to reconnect with one another. It's important not only for our sakes, but for Will's as well. We make an unstoppable team when we're connected."

"So, we agree that your mom should take Will for the night every couple of months so we can stay in tune with each other?" Mulder asked, wishing they could do it a little more frequently.

As if reading Mulder's mind, Scully said, "I was actually thinking more along the lines of once a month. It's a close enough time span so we won't feel quite as deprived at the loss of our old sex life, but far enough apart so we won't feel like we are abandoning our son. We can call it our date night."

Mulder hugged Scully again. "Sounds good to me. And since we have ever done anything the normal way, it would fit that our first date would come after we got married."

Scully laughed softly. "So, was it a good birthday overall?"

"Scully, it was the best birthday I have ever had," Mulder replied and then he leaned closer to Scully. "And the party isn't over yet," he said as he lowered Scully back onto the bed and claimed her mouth with his.
